With first-choice stopper Allan McGregor sidelined due to a long-term back injury, Hull snapped up David Marshall from Cardiff earlier this week. The Scotland international arrives for an undisclosed fee, believed to be worth up to £5 million.

The 31-year-old put pen to paper on a three-year deal with the Tigers, and speaking to the club’s official website, is hoping to claim a place in the Tigers’ first XI.

“It’s exciting to be coming back into the Premier League and to be joining Hull… It’s all about having that new, fresh challenge to look forward to. I feel that this is a club that is going places, especially when you look at the start they have made to the Premier League season… Of course I anticipate a battle for the jersey. You can’t take anything for granted and I’m here to fight for a place, I’ve always been like that wherever I’ve been.

The History

Marshall was a product of the Celtic youth academy, and made his professional debut in 2002 against St Johnstone. He famously kept a clean sheet against Barcelona in the UEFA Cup in 2004 to help Celtic progress to the quarter-finals, but struggled to establish himself at Parkhead, making only 35 appearances in all competitions, and initially left to join Norwich on loan during the 2006/07 season.

That spell was curtailed by an ankle injury, but the Canaries saw enough in Marshall to sign him permanently in the summer of 2007. He spent two successful seasons at Carrow Road, playing all 92 league matches. Following the club’s relegation to League One, he departed for Cardiff in a deal worth up to £500,000.

He was a crucial member of the squad that won the Championship in 2012/13, and was named the club’s Player of the Year in their ill-fated season in the Premier League, which saw them immediately relegated back to the Championship.

The Scotland international maintained his form back in the second tier over the past two seasons, and has regularly linked with a return to the Premier League, with West Brom among the potential suitors.

Marshall made his senior debut against Hungary in August 2004 at the age of 20, but failed to cement a regular role in the Scotland squad. He later earned caps at Under 21 level and for Scotland ‘B’, and is currently back in favour under Gordon Strachan, having made 24 international appearances up to this point.

The Prospects

Marshall’s arrival at the KCOM Stadium is likely to spell bad news for Eldin Jakupovic, with the former Cardiff goalkeeper regarded as favourite to take over as the number one in McGregor’s continued absence.

Having started the season priced at 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Jakupovic has risen to over 20% ownership – the second most popular keeper in the game behind United’s David de Gea.

Second only to Burnley’s Tom Heaton for saves (15 to 18), Jakupovic would be hard done by to miss out in light of his heroics. Frustratingly from a Fantasy perspective, a drop to the bench would deprive us of a rare sub-4.5 starter between the sticks, with Marshall priced at 4.5.

Sunderland’s failure to land a new keeper last night means that Jordan Pickford is likely to be the only active enabler at 4.0.

The youngster withdrew from the England Under 21 squad earlier today with a thigh problem, though local reports indicate it’s no more than a precaution.

Deputising for the stricken Vito Mannone, Pickford made seven saves on his first start of the season in the Black Cats’ draw at St Mary’s. Earlier today, though, reports suggest that the Wearsiders hope they will be granted special dispensation by FIFA to sign another keeper.

It’s also worth noting that although Mannone was initially set to be sidelined for three months with an elbow injury, the Italian suggested on Twitter yesterday that he might be back sooner than expected.

Having only conceded two goals so far this season, members of Hull’s backline have been perhaps surprisingly valuable Fantasy assets, with Curtis Davies the standout option, due to his impressive CBI statistics and goal threat from set-pieces.

The captain may well prove worthy of his 5.0 price tag, then, particularly from Gameweek 8 onwards, when Hull embark on a very favourable run (bou, STO, wat, SOT, sun, WBA, mid, CPL) of fixtures.

Should Marshall be the first choice goalkeeper by then, he would also be worthy of serious consideration. Indeed, in his previous season in the top-flight with Cardiff back in 2013/14, the Scot chalked up 121 points and made more saves than any other keeper.

  3. Cech out this sleeper keeper
    Jamie_GAWA

Cech is being overlooked, in this analysis I will use Foster to compare are a few points

Arsenal are defensively solid and with the additions of Mustafi and Xhaka they will be even more solid.

    Cech doesnt make enough saves?

Cech has made 10 saves so far, Foster has made 11 - not much difference.

Cech won't get Bonus, Like the cheaper keepers like Foster?

Well last year Cech had 15 bonus points in 3000 minutes of football whereas Foster had 5 bonus points in 1300 minutes. Cech is superior.

This shows that Cech has just as much if not more potential to get bonus as the cheap keepers, I'm saying this as people seem to think cheaper keepers are better for bonus and saves when there is really very little difference in saves

In the last 18 months Arsenal have kept the second most clean sheets (25) in the league and this should only improve with a top class CB and CDM added which is what Arsenal lacked.

Arsenal managed 25 clean sheets with Mertesacker and Coq, now they have Mustafi and Xhaka..

Cech is the cheapest way into the Arsenal defence, nailed, great fixtures and only 5.5m.

So if you think Arsenals defence is .5 too expensive or you don't have room for 3 premium defenders then I'd suggest that you should get Cech and Evans for 10m rather than Monreal and a 4.5 for 10.5.

That .5 can enable a lot!

5.5 on a keeper is too much, even more so this year.

        9 years, 3 months ago

He will outscore and has out scored 5.5 defenders for a long time.. No difference from spending 5.5 on goalkeeper of defender

Do you really wanna play Foster in all the big games or would you rather play Evans in the games of your choice?

5.5 isn't too much if you can't afford Arsenal's defense. And also there a lot of defenders who can replace Foster's value easily in WBA squad.

Or you could read that as both have same saves, similar CS and 15 baps to foster 12 in 3000 min
So 3 baps and couple more CS 1 mill saving on foster is a Brucie bonus

They are hardly similar clean sheet that's the point. You will get a lot more clean sheets for just 1m more...

The advantage of Foster was that he will get more bonus and saves but this is clearly not the case

20 clean sheets is not doable for any club, especially now that the Premier League is so competitive. I'd be surprised if Arsenal overtake last season's clean sheet numbers again this year

For me, it's not that Cech won't score more than Foster. It's that he won't score more by enough of a margin to warrant 1M additional spedn.

      1. Jamie_GAWA
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

Well why don't you go for an all 4.5 defence then, it's the fact you need your money spread out. Cech has consistently out scored 5.5 defenders..

        1. Jøssy ⭐
          • 11 Years
          9 years, 3 months ago

So last year Cech scored 159. The combination of Myhill/Foster (who shared the season) scored 139.

It's hard to compare 5.5M defenders, because any who were 5.5M last year scored well are now 6M, and those many that we're looking at this year were perhaps cheaper last year or have dropped to 5.5M cos they had a bad year (such as Chelsea defenders). Cech's the same price as he was last year, and Foster has actually dropped.

The reason I'd rather at least one expensive defender (in my case Valencia) is that is has the potential for attacking returns in addition to playing in a strong defence.

You make an interesting point, but it's predicated on the premise that it's better to get Cech (5.5) and Evans (4.5) than it is to get Foster (4.5) and Monreal (6.0). But the fact is, I never considered spending 6M on a defender when I believe Utd, Everton and Spurs offer good value at 5.5. Foster (4.5) and Valencia (5.5) is equivalent to me getting Cech with a 4M defender, which is obviously far less appealing.

          It's all about opinions though.

I believe United, City and Chelsea will finish in the top 4 so the last spot is left for Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool, even Leicester or Everton. The odds are stacked against arsenal this year and I think Wenger won't be happy at all at the end of it.

I'm sorry but the logic in this thread is a bit confusing. None of the comparisons are like for like, and the only comparative premise that I can follow is based, I think, on someone having both a West Brom and Arsenal defensive cover? If so, Cech + WBA defender vs Foster + ARS defender is a pretty narrow discussion.

Cech vs Foster is an interesting debate but needs to factor everything else in that people have mentioned.

      1. Jamie_GAWA

It's suppose to discuss Cech vs Foster and Cech + say Evans vs Foster and Ars defender for example.

Basically I'm saying Cech is a cheap way into the Arsenal defence and he is being overlooked.

Well, not exactly. It's more 5.5/4.5 vs 4.5/5.5 which is Cech + Evans vs. Foster + Valencia. I wouldn't argue that either is better (Valencia's assist potential?), but my gut says the latter.

But if the argument is that you can have Cech AND Valencia, it's a different story. Yes, it's appealing and rational, but if that means not getting someone like Sanchez, then it's not for me.

If that means sacrificing Townsend for Ramirez, etc etc, it's another discussion with no obvious answer.

Might want to think about cheaper first half, expensive second half, especially with the two WCs. If Arsenal get more CS in the second half, you might not need Cech yet until their defense solidifies with the new signings. West Brom not getting a new signing might mean they are more familiar with each other and TP's system.

The following post IMO is as good as it gets on when to go for CS and probably one of the 5-10 best pieces from the community since the article submission program started:

"People seem to think cheaper keepers are better for bonus and saves when there is really very little difference in saves."

Rubbish. Cech is the only expensive who does well in bonus and saves.

      DDG 2015/16: 3060 mins, 82 saves, 5 bonus
      Courtois: 2018 mins, 67 saves, 1 bonus
      Lloris 3330 mins, 88 saves, 4 bonus

A few of the 4.5m options last season. (Upgraded now)
      Butland: 2790 mins, 102 saves, 14 bonus
      Gomes: 3396 mins, 123 saves, 14 bonus
      Kasper: 3420 mins, 100 saves, 5 bonus

Cheap keepers destoy expensive ones in BPS/saves.

Arsenal are unlikely to get more CS than last season, 16 is huge. Sure, improved defence, what about the improved attack of so many teams they'll be facing?

WBA look like increasing on 10 CS. They were a leaky at the start of last season but normal service resumed as the season progressed.

I'd rather save the 1mil and get Foster over Cech and no Arsenal defender, who are overpriced (Arsenal fan here) and cheap keepers are always better value.

Ibrahimovic, Pogba, Mkhitaryan, Nolito, Sterling (new player this season), Sane, Benteke, Bony, Slimani, Chelsea are a team this season, Liverpool full season under Klopp etc

Arsenal's defence will improve but not the amount of CS imo.

if that's the case, cheaper keepers will also keep less CSs. why would Cech keep less and Foster more if the PL attack has improved? (Foster advocate here)

Something was off with WBA last season. They were leakier than a usual Pulis last side. They have finally brought in an LB in Galloway (Evans was used there a lot last season) and Nyom aswell. So far this season, they have looked a usual Pulis side so I think they will improve.

well, they looked effective vs Boro. with that form I'm ready to double up on Pulis men. Galloway looked great.

I think it's reasonable to expect both WBA and Arsenal to keep their CS form, and if they won't it can be down to luck rather than Xhaka factor.

Good post Jamie and something I shall be doing, ironically I'm just waiting for Foster to rise before being able to do it.

People get hung up too much in defence and look at it as 2 keepers and 5 defenders, I prefer to look at it as 7 defenders where you look to cover the best teams with 6 of those.

If you want Arsenal coverage in there than Cech makes sense at .5 cheaper than Koscienly/Monreal and gets plenty of bonus to justify it, got to look past the isolation of keeper/defender spots when filling your 7 defensive slots IMO.

Funny enough, the first person I saw mention ignoring the isolation was Spidermatt (years ago) it was a tactic he used when explaining how to build a defence and I'm not sure where the negative thinking against it comes.

As you say, Cech and Evans is cheaper than Foster and Koscienly which actually benefits your team, people need to think deeper.

Wrong. Why do you need Arsenal cover?

Swap Koscielny for Valencia/Baines who are 0.5m less...

Whether you need them or not is a matter of personal choice, I need a team that got 18 clean sheets and have added a superior defensive midfielder and a superior centre back to what they had last year.

Good luck with whoever you chose, Arsenal coverage (at both ends of the pitch) is high on my priority list for the next 8 weeks.

Other teams have improved in attack. Arsenal have better players in defence, doesn't mean they will get more CS.

Other teams that finished below Arsenal have improved, so Arsenal's improvements to a stronger side won't benefit Arsenal?

Yes, that logic makes a lot of sense.

but so did united. Fellaini has improved and cemented his place, Pogba is dominating. perhaps you can have both, Cech and Valencia/Shaw.

yes, I get that. ignoring an expensive keeper 'just because' is sometimes automatic.

something to think about when time comes to WC.

Original poster i think is making a slight error in the thinking

IE He says Cech and Evans is better than Foster and Monreal

Thing is there are much better options than Monreal. Is Cech and Evans better than Foster and Shaw? Because the quality defender has more options over a cheaper one

There is onr important point that is overlooked

An expensive defender adds stability to your whole backline and can be played in virtually every fixture, meaning your other defenders can pick and choose the best fixtures.

With an expensive keeper and Evans the defence lacks that stability which needs to be found elsewhere with other expensive players

He's not implying it's better, he's implying that it's cheaper which is better for squeezing every last drop out of your budget in a season where you're going to need it.

This season it's going to be pretty suicidal to go without Aguero/Ibra/Hazard because they will be in a large percentage of teams and will be captained between them on a weekly basis, you may dodge a bullet one week but not over the remaining 34, he's explaining how you can get Arsenal and West Brom (two teams expected to do well at clean sheets) for .5 less than you traditionaly would by reversing the funds.

Most people with West Brom defenders won't have issue with playing them most weeks and rotating them out in tougher week so it's hard to argue that it offers less flexibility the way he explains it, if anything, it offers you the chance to be less rigid.

Foster/Koscienly/Valencia/Baines is the same as Cech, Evans, Valencia and Baines but cheaper with the option to leave Evans out as and when so you are still playing your 3 expensive defenders every week without being tied to your cheap one when they may not have the best or fixtures, those that do have issue with having to play a West Brom defender every week have the option not to in this set up.

Now compare Cech's save points to Heaton's...

If there's one GK being overlooked as a set-and-forget-option, it's the Burnley stopper. He's a save machine and great at penalties, and Burnley are solid at home - even against top sides.

I think if I get a .2m rise from a player you get .1m out of it when you sell

If they go up at the same time you're better off waiting and buying Heaton at the higher price.

If you buy Heaton at 4.5:
When his current price is 4.6 you can sell at 4.5
When his current price is 4.7 you can sell at 4.6
When his current price is 4.8 you can sell at 4.6
        Etc.

If you buy Heaton at 4.6:
When his current price is 4.6 you can sell at 4.6
When his current price is 4.7 you can sell at 4.6
When his current price is 4.8 you can sell at 4.7
        Etc.

Higher resale value if you wait for both to rise since you bank the 0.1m on Foster but might not get that second rise on Heaton to bank 0.1m resale

Think it's really tricky this time round. Even "settled" teams like WBA have new defensive signings.

I think you've got to look for near-certain starters such as Ozil, Hazard, Lukaku, Ibra, etc.

I had injuries, suspended players and players losing value in both those periods, I just prioritized need. I had Sinclair lose 0.6m value because it wasn't worth a hit to me to sell my 5th mid.

Of course no two seasons are alike, but I still think I can be moderately patient.

I'm not totally sold that Zlatan is going to be a regular points scorer

It seems like I'm nearly alone 🙂

I'm with you, didn't even really consider him pre-season and not seen enough to change my mind

United's performance against Hull (pretty good) does have me a bit more concerned though, 29 shots is impressive
