Playing in a Premier League football team is like being part of a family, albeit one, like the Kardashians, awash with publicity, money, egos and the occasional massive arse.

And that makes the manager the ultimate father figure – by turns tough, caring and full of advice.

Here’s how the big daddies have dealt with the rise and rise of Michail Antonio and Wilfried Zaha’s potential, while Antonio Conte gets some love back from his charges and Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling discuss their roles under Pappa Pep.

There’s also Robert Snodgrass talking free-kicks and quotes from inside the Everton revolution.

Slaven’s Confidence Trick

With a 13-point Gameweek 4 under his belt, and a great run of fixtures – including Middlesbrough, Sunderland and Stoke at home and trips to West Brom and Palace – all the way into mid-November, it’s no surprise that 10% of all Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers are now aboard the Michail Antonio bandwagon.

His manager, Slaven Bilic, is keen to keep his boy’s feet firmly on the ground, however.

“Make no mistake, he was confident before, he’s a very confident lad. All he has to do now is not to change – not to change the way he plays, the way he trains, everything, and we have to help him with that…Sometimes the player doesn’t change but their environment changes or their friends change. It is very dangerous for some of the players but that’s why I spoke to him. And now, knowing him, he’s going to put the pedal down and try to become (an England) regular. He’s going to do everything.”

The Benteke Buzz

Alan Pardew, meanwhile, isn’t thinking England for his lad Wilfried Zaha. Just a move away from Palace – if he can up the goals and assists, that is.

The 5.4-valued winger got one of each in the 2-1 win at Middlesbrough, prompting Pardew to say this:

“He needs to address his goals and assists. If a club came in with, say, £50-£60m – let’s say a Man City, Barcelona or Real Madrid, and he’s got ten goals and nine assists – as his manager at Crystal Palace I can’t really stand in his way.”

The man himself is ‘buzzing’ about Benteke. New man Christian getting on the end of a Zaha cross last time out clearly enthused the winger.

“Literally put any ball in the air and he’ll (Benteke) header it. I saw him peel off, so I thought ‘let me try and get it to him’ and I knew that he’d get on the end of it. I’m buzzing. I feel like we pass the ball more. It’s not just in the air constantly and that gives us wingers a chance to get on the ball and do what we do. I’m enjoying how we play more now.”

Assuming The Position

Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne is another feeling love for a new way of playing.

“My position is totally different from last year. It’s not too defensive, but I know I will be more of a creator but have to help my team-mates up front more to get them the ball. They will do more of the finishing this year but I really enjoy it so far.”

With a goal and three assists from his last three starts, the Belgian is back to his brilliant best of last season, during which he had a hand in 37.5% of all City’s goals.

The same can’t be said of Raheem Sterling, who started the season with a bang but was a peripheral figure in the Manchester derby, managing one attempt (off target), creating zero chances and trying precisely no dribbles.

The much-maligned winger claimed that ‘It raises any players’ game when there’s four or five players who can play your position’, but the spectre of Leroy Sané (who replaced Sterling for the last half an hour at Old Trafford) is looming large.

“Leroy’s come in and he’s a really good guy who I speak to a lot but obviously he plays the same position – hopefully we can both be on the pitch at the same time but we have to work hard and show why we deserve to be involved.”

Two goals and two assists in his first three matches prompted more than half a million FPL managers to sign up Sterling. Any more no-shows like GW4’s and Sané (owned by 8,815) could be the saner option.

Diamonds Aren’t Forever

Positional issues are also a massive part of Nathan Redmond’s life at the moment.

The 6.1-valued Southampton winger is enjoying 10.4% ownership figures on the back of him being a midfielder used as a striker in Claude Puel’s never-changing diamond formation.

Except that Claude Puel’s never-changing diamond formation became a 4-3-3 in the last minute loss at Arsenal, with another midfielder, Jay Rodriguez, up top and Redmond back on the wing.

That should set the alarm bells ringing for FPL managers, although two upcoming home matches, against Swansea and Burnley, and the player’s comfort in his own adaptability might calm a few nerves.

“I’ve played number 10 here and there, but on the left and right throughout my career, and I’m just learning to play up front and enjoy the task at the moment. It’s started well and hopefully I can keep learning and scoring goals.”

‘Started well’ equates to a goal in GW1 and three subsequent blanks. The alarms are going off again…

Everyone Loves Conte

Back on the paternal theme, parents learn to expect no praise from their little darlings and usually receive a lot less.

Not at Chelsea, however.

New man David Luiz will be used exclusively as a defender, boss Antonio Conte has confirmed.

“I know sometimes he’s played as a central midfielder but in my mind the idea is to utilise him in the right position which, for me, is centre back.”

Luiz was quick to respond…with love.

“The coach is an amazing coach, he understands a lot of tactical things and I know he chooses every match the best line up, so if he needs to play three, four or two, it doesn’t matter, I am there if he wants me to play. In different positions I am available.”

And it’s a feeling reciprocated by the revitalised Eden Hazard, with an added dig at wicked uncle Jose Mourinho thrown in.

“Conte puts trust in his players and now we are good after an ugly season last year. I’ve always been the same player but Conte knows how to treat players having played at the highest level himself.”

Not-So Cuddly Koeman

You’d have to be blind, or Roberto Martinez, not to have noticed Everton’s blistering start to the season.

Who to credit, though? How about the tough love of Ronald Koeman and the self-regard of Romelu ‘Back In Business’ Lukaku?

“I am back in business now. Physically I needed one more week (before the international break) but I’m happy, I’ve got the goals flowing now. I’m back in business and I want to help my team-mates as much as I can to achieve our objectives.”

Koeman won’t be dropping Lukaku any time soon, but Ross Barkley is another matter altogether. The England midfielder was unceremoniously hoicked off at half-time against Sunderland despite a fine start to the season during which he’d scored one and laid on another.

When asked why he ditched Barkley, a 17.7%-owned FPL asset, Koeman didn’t mince his words.

“Because he didn’t show the level I expect. I know it’s always difficult for the manager because he was not selected for the national team and you take the player off after 45 minutes. But I had to do something. He lost too many balls. But I will speak to Ross tomorrow and that’s no problem.”

Everton’s three matches before the next international break are of the mouth-watering variety – Middlesbrough and Palace at home and Bournemouth away.

Those 17.7% will be hoping that Barkley listened long and hard to what his boss had to say.

Bob’s Your Uncle

And finally, Robert Snodgrass’s last-kick-of-the-match set-piece equaliser against Burnley took him to 23 points as he continued his, and his club’s, great start to the season.

If it’s heaven in Hull for Snodgrass at the moment, he puts it all down to hard work.

“We stay behind after training every day to work on things like that. Sometimes it might be for 20 minutes, sometimes it might be 30 minutes and sometimes it might be longer. You work hard for moments like Saturday.”

Such dedication would make any parent proud.

    Foster Jaku
    Stones Valencia Williams Evans Amat
    Hazard Firmino Sterling Snodgrass Capoue

    GW6 ideas:

    B) Sterling, Rondon > 5.7mid, Aguero (2FT)

Which Agüero plan do you prefer

    1) Drop Ibra for Agüero (4 good MF : Özil to Firmino & Capoue)

    2) Drop Lukaku for 1 cheap FW (Stuani/Diomande) & Capoue (alongside 4 good MF : Özil to Firmino)

    3) Drop Benteke for Agüero & 2 cheap MF (Capoue as 4th Mid & drop Özil for another 4.5 MF e.g : Meyler/Fletcher as 5th Mid)

    Current front 8
    Hazard / Antonio / Cazorla / Özil / Capoue
    Ibra / Lukaku / Benteke

I prefer to drop Ibra for Aguero. Premium midfielders will match Ibra's points in the long run. Aguero, Benteke and Lukaku looks good 🙂

Agree, at least in the long run. A front 3 of Kaku, Benteke and Kun will give you money to have a mid of Hazard, Firmino, Ozil etc. Dont think players like Fer, Snodgrass, Capoue will give you the same points in a long term.

Oke guys I have 1FT and WC left.. Thinking of using WC to get aguero back in next GW. What should I do with my FT though,?

(maybe save transfer en get aguero back in with two FT next week?)

    4m in bank.

I was thinking Fletcher --> antonio or Grey -> costa or lamela -> firminho

    This is my team.

    GK: Foster - Jaku

Def: Williams- Amat - Paredes (lol) - Valencia - Stones

Mid: Fletcher - Redmond - Mahrez - Hazard - Lamela

Att: Grey - Ibra - Lukaku

    suggestions?

    Thanks in advance!

Are we ignoring defence too much or are there simply not enough clean sheets to go around?

Most of the Ibra talk seems to be around downgrading to spend more money in midfield but should we be looking at putting it into defence.

The flair might not be in defence but a solid 6-8 points is nice from a defender who may only cost £5.5 (Valencia, Walker, Baines). That's likely to be much better than a similarly priced midfielder.

My main concern would be spreading the money too widely and not being able to react without multiple transfers.

      Not enough cleanies

An attacking defender like Baines would be worth it, but I've come to not expect clean sheets from my defence at all

Having a big front 7 has always been the method for more points, I don't see it changing with all the goals flying in

The Always Cheaters are doing analysis on CSs compared to last year and we are down around 30% YoY. Albeit the sample size is pretty small but with the money spent in the PL on attacking flair should we expect this downturn in CS and ignore defenders accordingly?

That reasoning informed why I spent some of my Kun windfall on double EVE defence -- looking to play a back 4 for the next couple of GWs.

That said, I'll probably lose Williams for a cheaper DEF after their good run of fixtures end.

      Walker 11 points
      Koscienly 10 points
      Baines 8 points.

Yes, you make a good point, there's not enough clean sheets for poor teams but Spurs, West Brom, Everton and United have 2 out of 4 so far and it's only likely to improve and not get worse.

People complain that there's not enough clean sheets when they shop in the barging basement, there's a subliminal message there.

Yeah, I have 4 premium defenders at the back and it looks pretty good to me. Balanced enough to get points even if my attack miss-fires. People loaded up top will be getting red arrows if their forwards don't score.

The game this year looks pretty clear cut, we have two very strong captains in Ibra and Aguero, we just need to support them with consistency and strong defenders offer the best source of consistency over the course of the season.

In the next 5/6 weeks Everton, Arsenal and Spurs should all produce on the clean sheet side and give those captains the platform for some big scores.

People seem to be cheapening the defence or midfield to cram one extra expensive player in who they won't captain and as a result they are weakening other areas and losing the chance to be consistent.

          Makes no sense.

Yep, I can fit Kun, Ibra, Haz and Arsenal or Liverpool mid (both if I sell Antonio) with a defence of Bellerin, Toby, Baines and Valencia for the next few weeks at least. Bolasie as a 4th mid is the enabler.

I may bring in Walker for Toby to fund Kun. I'm happy with 442, but a 433 might also work quite well if one of the cheaper strikers takes off. If value emerges elsewhere i'll shift cash from the back to the mids/forwards.

Sounds really good, I played 442 last week, Koscienly and Baines brought in 18 points, when you see a lot of teams scoring around 30 in total you have to say that it's not spending too much in defence.

I got 20 from my defence, but Valencia had a poor fixture (he was only in so I didn't double on WBA, McAuley is my backup defender, mostly to soak up his rises - I have Foster in nets) and I thought Bellerin was unlucky not to get a CS with the nature of the Southampton goal. Foster only lost his CS right at the last moment also.

63 in total despite (C) Hazard, and a big green arrow.

With clean sheets being so sparse and the game requiring us to have at least 3 defenders at all times, I am experimenting with something new this season for the time being. I am looking at 3 defenders in the 5 to 5.5 range who have attacking potential. This basically gives me 10 players on the pitch who can either assist or score a goal. Right now I have gone with Baines, Valencia and PVA as the three I will play most gameweeks.

That's the way to play it this year IMO

Baines got 2bps in a game where 3 goals were scored and he had no involvement in.

There's a sign there that defenders have potential, once the clean sheers come (and they will, they always do) you could be seeing a few 9 point weeks for defenders which is not to be sniffed at (and that's before there's attcaking returns)

I have Amat and Kingsley as bench fodder, and am keeping AAO as insurance. I still think, on PPG, players like Bellerin, Tony V and Baines will keep up with those of the same price elsewhere, and likely outscore them. Therefore, they are worth the money.

The gap between Snodgrass and an 8.0 mid is almost certainly going to be smaller than that between the 4.0 DFs and Bellerin/Toby.

I've gone against the trend here with 442 and a defence of Bellerin, Alderweireld, Baines and Valenica on my WC last week. I'm fairly happy with my prospects. Compared to sides with a poor 4th/5th mid or 3rd striker, mine is fairly strong throughout, and when the strikers blank I have a very good chance of rising in rank.

I've had Foster, Valencia, Walker, Baines since the start as my back 4 and it's served me pretty well. Wildcarding next week and I reckon i'll keep it the same and downgrade my 4.5's to 4.1/4.0 as I'll play those three every week. That defense is the only reason I've had a semi-decent start and am topping my mini leagues.

I remember you raising a similar subject before, saying that the smart money might be on premium defenders. I still think that's the right approach, and I've been happy with the results from playing 4-3-3, where the three midfielders are of high quality (Hazard, Firmino, Ozil etc) but the 4th and 5th are dirt cheap.
The points from midfield have not been consistent, and hard to predict - those from a solid defence and strong front 3 look more reliable to me.

interesting to compare PL investment in keepers and defence v. midfield and attack last window.
generally you are looking at defenders and keepers who can add something else in terms of save pts, bonuses, assists or even goals rather than clean sheets.
with the emphasis on big hitters and their prices doesn't tend to leave a lot of money for pricey defenders.
what is the cs ratio so far this season 16-17 out of 80 possibilities? defenders = 12 goals, 14 assists and about 70 bonus pts out of about a possible 6 pts available per game generally..

I think getting the right defenders is harder but if you look at the spread of points for the top 10 defenders at the moment to attackers, there is not huge disparities outside of the top 2 and defenders are a lot cheaper

      Attackers Defenders
      29 25
      27 22
      24 22
      23 20
      21 19
      20 18
      18 18
      17 18
      17 18
      17 17

I was thinking about this yesterday evening when I had a look at my team. Let's say Cazorla will equal Ozil in points (big assumption I know), I would get Aguero over Ibra (would never captain Ibra because I dislike the player, so don't mind shipping him). With these transfers I am reallly happy about my team but my defence is pretty cheap with no City, Manu, Chelsea, Spurs defenders in there. But when I have to choose between let's say Antonio as my 4th midd and some cheap rotation in defence or Snodgrass and a premium defender like Azpi, Walker, Valencia.... the choice is pretty easy for me. I'm not completely sure if the first option will certainly outscore option 2 but the margin between a 5.5 and a 4.5 defender is way smaller than the margin between a 7.0 and a 6.0 middfielder imo.

I get the point and agree.
At least me, personally, I like balanced teams. Even if for that I need to close my eyes to some nice attacking players.
And defense, in every fantasy game that I entered, plays a major role. Because sometimes (no always) is easier to approximate in a consistent way the probability of a CS against the probability of a player scoring.
Sure that spending 6.5 £ in defenders is too much. But on these medium tier players, as Baines and Walker, it can be always a very interesting move.
Balance is always a key to perform well, specially in very long competitions, as the BPL. Because, in European and World Cups, fixtures and form is everything. In here is a bit more. Which means that balance will be very important, unless someone wants to take hits every GW or so making multiple subs.

The decrease in clean sheets doesn't mean budget defence is better than premium - if there's a lack of cleanies across the board, spending that extra million on Valencia/Walker etc who are essentially secondary wingers at top clubs is totally worth it imo. Some of the 5.5s are really underpriced. Remember, they're not 5.5 million, they're +1 million, as you have to spend that 4.5 for a playing defender anyway. Worth it imo

Well, my philosophy relies on having one defender and one attacker from the 3 or 4 teams that are likely to be challenging for the title. My thinking being that the teams challenging for the title are likely to keep more clean sheets than those that aren't.

      Foster / Heaton
      Stones / Valencia / Azpilicueta / Friend / Amat
      Mane / Capoue / Hazard / Antonio / Ramirez
Diomande / Ibra / Benteke (with 6.2 in the bank to get Aguero back)

Some good points made by all.

It is still far too early to tell where we are at with this years game. There are about 10 mids that could make our teams right now and there are 5 or 6 forwards we could consider too.

The Ds don't appear to be doing cs at present so we look to the attacking defenders like Valencia and Baines.

A defence of two attacking 5.5s, a couple of 4.5s (McAwful and Collins in my case) and Amat as the 4.0 enabler looks the right balance right now.

I'm still waiting for patterns to emerge and see who the consistent players are going to be. It has never been a better time to be a member of FFS though. Those stats are crucial.

I think there is outstanding value in the 5.5 range with walker, Valencia/shaw, Baines/Coleman

I can't see any need to spend more and there are limited quality options for less. Williams / Stones at 5m could be OK but you can see where the 0.5 goes for the 5.5 list.

Given what that 1m can buy you going from 4.5m to 5.5m I think there is a strong case for holding 2x5.5.

I'm even considering 3x5.5 which is not my usual structure but gives me one of each and a relatively easy 1m trade down if I want to find some money down the track.

I have Valencia Walker and Baines.

I don't know what more Valencia and Walker need to do to convince people they're OOP.....On paper they may be full backs but during the match they're right up there at times.

I start really mining for cleanies in the second half... defence is more solidified and the points more precious. Attacking defenders are great but less predictable.

I'm very much running against the mill with a defence of Stones, Walker, Baines, Shaw, Azpilicueta. I roughly expect them to average almost 4 points per game, based on some modelling. Long-term Azpilicueta is gone, but in general I think there is great value in defense. Long-term I have Aguero and Zlatan, and since they rotate perfectly, I don't need to worry about captaincy. I'm not going to have any of the premium midfielders. I'm sort of cheap, so I like finding players who are value anyway. So my "premium" midfielders are Firmino and Tadic (my model likes him as much as Mahrez). Capoue is my 5th midfielder, and the rest of my team is 6-7 million type midfielders/forwards. Since I do modelling, I'm very comfortable with rotating my team each round, and it doesn't really bother me having points on the bench. Most of the time it's just random, and I did the right thing. For example, this time I play 4-4-2 and bench Azpilicueta, Gray and Capoue. No problem.

      Hi all,

I'm on a WC, and would welcome some comments:
      Foster Jakupovic
      Pieters Shaw Amat Baines Collins
      Payet Hazard Capoue Firmino Cazorla
      Lukaku Ibra Deeney
      0.1 ITB

I have no Man C players at the moment, which is a bit worrisome.
I could do Payet -> Antonio and upgrade Caz to Nolito/Sterling/Silva. If I do Sterling I'd have enough to do Ibra -> Aguero later.

      Any recommendations?

Used AoA because of many injuries or concerns in defense. Of course, this was the only week Capoue only got 2 points. And one of the "doubtful" defenders got a CS.

I'm not too frustrated about it. AoA is the worst of the chips, and "losing 4 points" with it I can live with.

      Heaton Jak
      Amat Walker Evans Shaw Williams
      Capoue Hazard Ozil Sterling Lamela
      Lukaku Negredo Ibra

WC already used two weeks ago. Team is sitting pretty at 704th overall so don't mind taking a -4 to get my team set up nicely. Don't particularly want to change my defence. 0 ITB.

      A. Sterling Lamela Lukaku ---> Snod Fer Aguero and -4 hit
      B. Ozil Lukaku ---> Snod Aguero (hoping that my teams value goes up 0.1 for this, or Aguero drops more)
      C. Ozil Sterling Negredo ---> Snodgrass Zaha Aguero and -4 hit

Don't really want to get rid of Ozil but see no other way.

      Hazard - Sterling - Antonio - Lamela - Capoue
      Ibra - Lukaku - Negredo

Chelsea at home, not expecting a lot of goals

Was thinking of preserving that 1 FT I have this week and use the 2 next week to get Aguero in. But now getting really itchy to use the 1 this GW to get Iheanacho in for Costa. Should I go ahead with it or should I save that 1 FT for next GW's Aguero plan.

Don't do that mate, pointless when you can save it for an easy Aguero in

It depends on your squad, but that transfer you said doesn't sound right to me

I think you are right but no City cover in this GW scares me. I have Hazard from Chelsea.
