THE REAL RON ⚽ THE REAL RON ⚽
Share:

Theo Walcott; Fantasy Premier League Gold. Two phrases that have gone together so frequently in the past, despite lingering doubts over his fitness and ability to stay in Arsene Wenger’s good books.

Yet this season, all is rosy – but his ownership stands at only 3%. So what’s the big problem?

I’m here to tell you there isn’t one – here are four key reasons why “our Theo” should be the apple of our eye.

PEDIGREE

As I’ve alluded to, Walcott is proven Fantasy material. Now in his 11th Premier League season, Walcott is soon to become Wenger’s longest serving player across his whole Arsenal reign.

And in those previous 10 seasons, Walcott has shown inconsistency in minutes, but his goal-scoring has rarely been in doubt. The Englishman endured a poor season last term, with only five goals in 1,373 minutes – in the previous two injury-hit seasons though, he still managed to reach this figure in very restricted appearances (447 minutes and 860 minutes both putting him as a one-in-two scorer).

His truly exceptional Fantasy reputation came in 2012/13, though. In that season, he almost joined the elusive 200-point FPL club, racking up 14 goals and 13 assists on the way to finishing on 194 points overall. Now back into a consistent rhythm, this is the Walcott we should be hoping for.

FIXTURES

Very little needs to be said about Arsenal’s upcoming fixtures:

bur/SWA/MID/sun/TOT

It really is that good. The first four fixtures pit Arsenal against two promoted teams, a leaky Sunderland side and a Swansea team potentially on the brink of sacking their manager. The home fixture at Tottenham so often promises goals, and Walcott’s record of five goals and five assists in 17 appearances is equally promising, if you choose to hold onto the winger in the longer term.

With Liverpool’s midfielders looking worthy of a double-up, why would Sanchez and Walcott not prove an equally explosive combination?

FORM

This is an area where few are doubting Walcott – he has started the season very well. With three goals and two assists, he sits ninth overall – sitting less than half a dozen points behind the likes of Phillipe Coutinho, Adam Lallana, Michail Antonio and Heung-Min Son.

Looking at the underlying statistics, there appears no reason for Walcott to fall out of this esteemed company. Looking at the season as a whole, he sits:

=3 for Big Chances

=2 for Shots Inside the Box

And is outright #1 for Shots on Target

This is a Walcott close to the peak of his powers.

NAILED-ON

This is where the doubts ultimately lie about Walcott – including, until recently, with myself. However, my opinion on this has changed.

Look back at Arsene Wenger’s team selections, and for 95% of the time, he will set up his front five behind the striker as:

  • ‘Destroyer’ – The likes of Mikel Arteta, Mathieu Flamini, Francis Coquelin in recent seasons, stretching to Aaron Ramsey if forced, and now the likes of Granit Xhaha too.
  • ‘Playmaker’ – The central midfield maestro, currently being performed by Santi Cazorla – but also by Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey
  • ‘The #10’ – Mesut Ozil, quite simply.
  • ‘The Winger’ – Predominantly, this has been Alexis Sanchez when fit, which is the position Walcott would hold too.
  • ‘The Wide Playmaker’ – This is the key position for Wenger. When Sanchez plays wide, the opposite flank would typically be a more technical, measured player. This is a position held most recently by Aaron Ramsey, and prior to that, Santi Cazorla on the left-hand side.

Now I would agree, this is all seems very Football Manager. And it comes with a very large caveat – as with the situation now, resulting in Wenger playing Alex Iwobi and Walcott on the flanks, this is very dependent on Arsenal’s injury issues at any given time. However, the history would show that Wenger will very rarely play with two out-and-out wingers when given the choice – and Sanchez trumps Walcott there every day.

BUT… Wenger’s comments this week and the authority with which they beat Chelsea says a lot:

I think he used to be 90 per cent forward and 10 per cent defending. Today he is 50-50. He does the job both ways and he does it both ways with commitment. And I always felt there is character and intelligence in this boy. He is a guy with a good assessment of his performances and qualities – Wenger.

Wenger now trusts Walcott to defend. His attacking qualities are not in doubt. This is the key element to a nailed Theo Walcott.

CONCLUSION

Ultimately, if Walcott continues to play well, both Arsene Wenger and Fantasy managers will want him in their team. If he loses his Arsenal place now, it will only be because of poor form – and that will see him leave your team regardless. The return of Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey may see him substituted, but Wenger picks Premier League teams to win matches – and right now, Walcott is part of that winning team.

In the £7m – £8m bracket in FPL, he is easily as nailed as Michail Antonio (in the sense of him being nailed at right-wing) and Adam Lallana – but Walcott provides pedigree backed quality, natural goal-scoring ability and a proven bar of FPL Gold.

Theo is one of my all time FPL favourites. But he is in no way nailed on, and your case for the opposite is not strong enough. He could drop to the bench any given week, and Wenger's comments don't change that, especially with the CL gearing up.

That said, he can do damage in limited minutes, so I may well get him after the Burnely game if he stays there.

He is absolutely nailed with Ramsey out. When a team hits form Wenger rarely rotates - as shown by Giroud remaining on the bench recently.

Yep. Ultimately that's his best chance of getting in the team though.

He isn't trusted as the destroyer, and isn't in the same style as Cazorla. If Walcott's scoring goals though, Ramsey's struggling.

I think his best chance of getting in the team is rotation and/or an injury to Cazorla or Özil. Even Wenger has said that he sees Ramsey primarily as a CM.

It's the big midfield conundrum this season. Realistically, you can't fit all the mids you really want in one team:
    Sanchez
    KDB and/or Sterling
    Firmino and/or Coutinho and/or Mané and/or Lallana
    Antonio
    and now Walcott?
...Plus have 1 or both of Aguero and Ibra plus a hefty second striker like Lukaku or Costa.

Something has to give. And those with Sanchez will be reticent to double up if it means sacrificing Liverpool or Man City mids, or a big hitter up front.

Had him from GW1-4 and then got rid on WC for him to get 2 goals in the last 2 games.. Need him back in asap but seems silly for a hit with Bolasie at home to Palace and Antonio at home to Middlesbrough this week.

It's tempting as a non-Alexis owner. The Threat stats are close. The only issue is who to sell? Firmino and Antonio have great fixtures. Selling Sterling is very short-sighted. Maybe best to just wait and get Sanchez with 2 FTs when selling Ibra.

    1. THE REAL RON ⚽
      • 9 Years

Yep, selling any of those mids is a punt. But ultimately, Walcott's form and fixtures trump pretty much everyone.

Selling any of those three could backfire easily, but that will always be true.

I can't see him being nailed in the long run actually. Perez could also play on the wing, Wenger might play Giroud which forces Sanchez to play on the wing again, and Ox, Iwobi and Walcott battling for the spot on the other wing

Long-run, maybe. These plum fixtures, nailed imo whilst the team are playing this well. No way Sanchez is moving wide yet.

"No way Sanchez is moving wide yet".

This is the crux of it and I have said the same myself (based on Wenger's previous comments). The problem, however, is that as soon as Sanchez is moved wide I will want rid of him, he's just not the same FPL asset then. And at the same time it could well mean trouble for Walcott's place as you say in the article.

            It's a potential double-whammy. 🙁

CL rotation doesn't worry me that much with Arsenal (unlike City and Spurs). If they beat Basel tonight, qualification should be fairly easy for them and the key game (PSG home) isn't till towards the end of November. The international break and possible injuries concern me more - Alexis plays twice and the 2nd game (v Peru) is early on Wednesday 12th (00:30 UK time). Arsenal then play on Saturday 15th and last time that happened Sanchez was rested.

England also play twice, the 2nd game being away in Slovenia on Tuesday 11th. One would expect Walcott to at least be in the squad and to play at least one of the 2 games. A Walcott injury is never to be excluded.

Meanwhile, Burnley have gone 10 months without conceding twice in a home game and are notoriously resilient at Turf Moor. Last time they were in the PL they kept 7 clean sheets in 19 home games (including against both Manchester clubs and Spurs) and the game against Arsenal was 0-1. They only conceded 21 goals in those 19 home PL games. And they started that season with no PL experience to speak of, unlike this time. They will set up in a 4-5-1 with deep defence and a hard-working midfield shield, just the kind of team Arsenal often struggle against.

The upshot of all this is that I see no rush for Walcott. Actually I had him from GW1 and removed him in favour of Sanchez on wildcard. I'm not opposed to the Arsenal double-up and I do think Walcott is terrific value (as is Mata if he keeps his place). But a considered decision towards the end of the international break seems wiser to me than jumping now.

              • Now I'd be the last person to say "Trust in Wenger to make the right decision", but I do at the minute. He fecking loves Sanchez. I wasn't convinced by him as a central striker, but the last few games have proved me wrong. And Wenger's putting words to this one too:

‘I play Sanchez in the middle because at the moment he scores goals, he has a quality of runs in behind and he’s less busy doing defensive work on the flanks. That allows him to contribute more to the offensive power of the team because today the full backs go forward and he uses a lot of energy in the flanks.’

The key bit here is getting Sanchez away from chasing full backs. He'll do it happily, but Wenger just wants pure attack from him - unlike with Walcott. That's how important he is to Arsenal. Even with Wenger's love of Giroud, Sanchez is quashing that - he stays up top whilst all is going well.

              • Agreed on CL. Ospina shows Wenger is happy to rotate for CL, and is arrogant enough to think he can - even with past scares! Sanchez will obviously play CL, but it's not the big priority. The international break last time out was pure PSG fear - this time it's Ludogrets if my memory serves me correctly. And they almostttttttttt dropped points, remember. He won't be doing that this time around. (Although I do have my doubts if he plays 180 for Chile and Giroud/Ramsey are fit and in need of minutes.)

              • Yep, agreed on Burnley. With Gray out, they need to be even more pragmatic. That's why I'm having big doubts about Sanchez(c) this week. If Walcott comes in for me, it'll be after Burnley, and potentially even a (c) punt. Unless you have a transfer needing to be made, this isn't the time to gamble on Antonio/Liverpool mid out - yet.

If you have to choose one between them, who would it be? I have the same problem with Sterling, Firmino, and Antonio in the team.

Saving for 2FT on international break to do Ibrahimovic to Sanchez is definitely an option, but I'm personally thinking to do Sterling to Walcott this week because I have Aguero for Man City coverage. I know Burnley away at Turf Moor is probably not a good time, but I don't think I want to be another week late to the Arsenal party.

I don't see any point in the Sanchez/Walcott double-up right now, Arsenal's points aren't being shared around as much as Liverpool's. You know Sanchez will probably be involved in most of their goals. I see Walcott as an option only for those like me who don't want to lose Ibra (at least not yet) and thus can't afford Sanchez.

Nice article. If you don't have Sanchez and is limited in funds, I would get Theo for sure. Now's the time. Was thinking on doubling up with Sanchez but ended up doubling on Liverpool midfielders. My other midfielder is Sterling, so right now I don't have space for Theo unfortunately.

Yeah, same - went double Liv over double Ars. Might switch that after Burnley.

I've been mulling over this, for me it comes down to next GW:

    - If Antonio can't get returns against boro then he has to go
    - If Arsenal can break down a stubborn Burnley then Walcott is a viable replacement
    - If not, then it's taking a punt down Lallana lane

Stick with Antonio, although kinda hoping that isn't the case as a Middlesbrough fan :p

Never going there again...Volatile and not very accurate shooter...Anyway have vast number of good options in 7-9mn bracket so Sanchez is enough Arsenal cover and maybe Kos now as fixtures cleared

Top for shots on target in the league suggests an accurate shooter. 😛

So many options in midfield. By the end of the season, I think Sanchez-Kdb-Mane combined will score more points than Walcott-Sterling-Lallana, but not by much

The first combo will outscore them quite a lot imo.. Walcott is injury-prone and will see rotation. Sterling will see rotation and Lallana should be outscored by Mane, Firmino and prolly Coutinho too long-term

But if you have the first combo you have to go cheaper up front. If Ibra gets a big haul or two suddenly those mid-price options will become all the more valuable (unless of course Rashford nails down his place).

My doubts about Walcott's pitch time remain. It's early in the season and when Giroud finally takes his place up front, Sanchez drops back to midfield, and Ramsey is fit, we'll see whether Walcott really is nailed on. Meanwhile, Alexis is in my XI, and with so many good options elsewhere, I'm not doubling up on the Arsenal midfield. Not yet anyway.

Got him last week. The other option was Lallana but I went for Theo because his stats were better, so it's a bit annoying Lallana did even better than Theo this week. Walcott is more of a risk given injury worries but I think he'll outscore Lallana IF he keeps playing - Lallana's stats suggest regression (1 goal from 1 SoT, 2 assists from 2 key passes this week) whereas Walcott's don't.

So there is 2 wing spots available

Iwobi,Perez (plays wing), Walcott, Ramsey (?),Sanchez(?)

Too much uncertainty and if Arsenal have one bad game Gru could go up top and Sanchez out wide..
