Stoke manager Mark Hughes has mixed feelings, Tottenham’s Son keeps on scoring, Liverpool duo Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino also notch as Brazil coast against Bolivia, whilst Hector Bellerin is set for scans on an ankle problem

Mixed News for Sparky

The footballing lord giveth and then he taketh away – at least where Stoke boss Mark Hughes is concerned.

His two highest-scoring Fantasy Premier League midfielders, Marko Arnautovic (7.2) and Joe Allen (4.8), made telling contributions for their national teams.

Arnautovic, with just the one Premier League goal to his name, has cut a rather frustrated figure at Stoke this season, so his double for Austria against Wales would have done him, and his club manager, the power of good.

Add in Allen’s stunning volley for the Welsh – his third goal in as many matches – and Hughes should have been purring.

Instead, he had to endure the news that Allen later limped off with a hamstring issue that makes him a doubt for a Sunday match with Georgia, according to Wales manager Chris Coleman.

“He had a twinge in his hamstring, so that’s why we took him off immediately. We’ll assess him in the next 24-48 hours. He’ll be scanned and it’s how he reacts. If anything comes up on the scan, we wouldn’t gamble with any of the players because it’s not in our interests to do that. Joe belongs to Stoke City and we have to send him back in the condition that we received him. That’s why we he came off.”

The scoring in the match was an all-Premier League affair, with Tottenham defender Kevin Wimmer (4.7) hitting an own goal for the Welsh.

Son Keeps Shining

Man of the moment Heung-Min Son (7.6) took his Tottenham form back home with the winning goal, and an assist, for South Korea against Qatar.

The Spurs midfielder, on a run of four goals and two assists in four domestic starts, is this week’s top FPL transfer target, with more 131,000 managers drafting him into their sides ahead of a trip to the Hawthorns.

And he continued his great start to the season when he fired home from an assist by Swansea midfielder Sung-yeung Ki (5.2).

Ki, who has started just two league matches this season, had earlier opened the scoring from a Son pass, giving a timely reminder to new Swans boss Bob Bradley of his pedigree.

As did Gylfi Sigurdsson, who bagged an assist in Iceland’s 3-2 win over Finland.

Reds Pair In the Goals Again

Liverpool duo Philippe Coutinho (8.3) and Roberto Firmino (8.4) both scored as Brazil swept past Bolivia 5-0 in the early hours of this morning.

Coutinho played the full 90 minutes and also earned an assist – teeing up Firmino, who emerged as a second-half sub to find the net.

Although both have a trip to Venezuela in the early hours of Wednesday morning, it’s worth noting that Liverpool don’t play in Gameweek 8 until 8pm on Monday night at home to Man United, giving both plenty of time to recuperate.

Following that clash, the Reds’ superb upcoming schedule – which takes them all the way up to Boxing Day (or Gameweek 18 to you and I) is set to earn Jurgen Klopp’s regulars significant Fantasy investment.

Tadic on Top Form

Dusan Tadic (7.2) played a part in all of Serbia’s goals in a 3-0 win over Moldova.

The Southampton midfielder supplied the assists for his nation’s first two strikes before netting a third.

Tadic is in solid form going into Gameweek 8’s home match with Burnley – he has a goal and two assists from his last four league starts, blanking in just one of those outings – and famously scored 23 points in the GW8 of 2014/15 as the Saints humbled Sunderland 8-0.

If the theorists are to be believed, Southampton’s supposed taste for stellar GW8 performances – they also beat Chelsea in London last season – could signal another big day for Tadic.

Bellerin Concern for Gunners

Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin is set to be assessed after sustaining an ankle problem whilst on duty for Spain Under 21s last night.

Early reports suggest that the right-back’s issue is not thought to be too serious, though with an FPL ownership in excess of 25%, further updates will be eagerly awaited.

Bellerin has risen to third in the FPL defender standings on the back of three clean sheets, an assist and five bonus points in the last six Gameweeks.

With Swansea, Middlesbrough and Sunderland up next for Arsene Wenger’s side, further points look on the agenda if he proves his fitness in time.

More Right-Backs in Focus..

Man United’s Antonio Valencia (5.6) was the star of the show for Ecuador in a 3-0 win over Alexis Sanchez’ Chile late last night.

Stationed in an attacking midfield role, the Red Devils’ defender grabbed a goal and assist, with namesake Enner Valencia (5.4) earning an assist.

Sanchez played the full 90 minutes for the beaten visitors.

Everton’s Seamus Coleman (5.5) scored his first ever international goal to help the Republic of Ireland to an unimpressive 1-0 win over Georgia last night.

Owned by just 4.7% of FPL managers, Coleman continued the fine domestic form that has seen him serve up a goal, a clean sheet and four bonus points in the last three Gameweeks.

With trips to Manchester City and Chelsea in the next four, though, our faith in the Toffees’ defence is on the slide.

Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic (5.9) was also on target in Serbia’s win over Moldova.
He can only hope his club boss Antonio Conte, who dropped him for last weekend’s trip to Hull, was at least reminded of his threat going forward.

Finally, City’s Pablo Zabaleta earned an assist in Argentina’s 2-2 draw in Peru, with Everton’s forgotten centre-half Ramiro Funes Mori (4.8) opening the scoring.

Sergio Aguero was replaced on 73 minutes after failing to find the net.

Not sure I like him so much this season. With Bojan and Bony around i'm not sure he'll retain penalty duties either.

Looking at the opposition he scored against and how spread apart his goals are he's hardly a streaky, plum fixtures kind of guy.

...now look at Stoke opponents in next 7...

They are ALL in top 7 for most goals and GA's conceded.

Have had McAuley since the season opener but have shipped him out this week considering their upcoming run of fixtures. However, Collins may be more of an issue for you with his starting potential being under threat recently. I'd potentially look to replace with a Bournemouth defender in Smith, perhaps? They have a fairly good run (excluding Spurs next week).

I can't see too many issues with the remainder of your squad and it could easily score as well as any but personally, I may consider Deeney for Benteke or upgrading Antonio for the likes of Son Walcott?

Having said this, saving the 2nd FT for next week may prove a wise choice.

      I hope that helps.

Not really but I get your point.
This article is about who played and did he score/assist. So basically nice sum up for some one who missed it.
Some other articles are about opinion, sugestions, observation etc or info that is not as easy to find (or need time to calculate, check previous games etc.) as who score a goal.

Probably need to sell Antonio and Ibra this week:
    A) Sanchez & Austin (get an Arsenal defender for a hit or with FT next week)
    B) Sanchez & Benteke (no money for an Arsenal def in the future)
    C) Keep Antonio/Ibra and do something else?

    Current team:
    Foster, Pickford
    Valencia, Baines, McAuley, Friend, Amat
    Sterling, Antonio, Firmino, Snodgrass, Capoue
    Aguero, Lukaku, Ibrahimovic

Phil Jagielka has withdrawn from the England squad due to injury. The 34-year-old Everton skipper suffered an injury to his thigh ahead of England’s 2018 World Cup qualifiers at home to Malta and away to Slovenia. While the injury is not considered to be serious, he will return to Everton to be assessed.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

The Key Factor Behind Your Transfer Decisions

Over in the community article section I've just written an article for Members about the goals imminent table, to look for some key trends in predicting success.

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2016/10/07/goals-imminent-table-investigated/

But while restricted to Members I thought it would still be good to open up a more general discussion for all here about what is the key factor behind your transfer decisions.

For me I like to look at underlying statistics -but sometimes that means searching for hidden gems too much, while ignoring the obvious points scorers.

For others they will use the eye test to see whether the player is actually of quality.

While for some fixtures take precedence. And for others form is key - draft in last week's points scorers and hope they can maintain their form.

What is the key motivation behind your transfers?

To choose between targets I consider the following in order:

      Statistical form
      Actual form (points scored)
      Fixtures
      Price
      Ownership

For defenders, Fixtures goes to the top.

        Aye. Defenders are different.
Fixtures top as long as player is nailed on. Then price amongst that teams defenders which is why i got walker of the spurs lot gw1. Wasn't i expected the returns he got, was purely to save 0.5

I like a mixture of; underlying stats, form and fixtures.

I make exceptions sometimes, e.g. when Hazard/Aguero are on form, I ignore their fixtures.

There are other factors to consider also; injury proneness, card risk, BPS potential, price in relation to the rest of my team.

Mixture of form fixtures and eye for me

So on my WC I'm getting Arsenal City and Liverpool cover for fixtures but that cover will be aguero on eye as we all know he's the top player, Sanchez similar, Walcott for form and Firmino for eye and form.

I also dont get players i see as donkeys like giroud regardless of how good their stats are

On a big fixture shift week like this week, fixtures for the next 5 or 6 GWs are the key

      Form
      Fixtures
      Underlying Stats

      In that order.

Eye test used to take a greater precedence but I don't have as much time to watch games anymore.

    8. KingNidge

Obviously a good run of fixtures on paper and form helps but i also have no problem having a total shot in the dark with a player who is currently showing no form whatsoever as a strong run of fixtures can bring about a run of form.. massively satisfying when this comes off..

I love the perfect storm of a) fixture shift, b) a player passing the eye test and c) not scoring particularly well in previous couple of weeks. It's great when it all comes together.

Mainly based on my overall strategy based on the latest trend in the results, such as going for all-out and expensive firepower in attack or chasing the midfield template or investing in premium defenders.

I also strongly consider performance in past seasons.

to be honest ownership goes into a bit, get very excited when a player is under 1%, like chadli, or lanzini recently was 0.1%. next on the radar is borja baston at a tantalising 0.0%.
it's just cool when you see one person posting a caps lock salute to a player scoring rather than 3 pages of 'YESSSSSSS' etc

      fixtures probably first for me.
I like to get players in for a decent chunk of time (5 games or so) or else you can end up needing to make mass changes and it's more likely to help team value to keep players for a while.
Particularly with defence when planning rotation - probably the most rotated area of FF.
Always like to make sure I have 15 starters.
Defenders are more likely to be brought in on PPG (see earlier hot topic). Whereas midfielders + forwards more likely to be based on form.
also like to keep at least a little money itb as even a little can help with flexibility and reduce the need to use up FTs or take hits.

I never check stats so it's all about the eye test plus if I think a player is exciting to watch.

The deciding factor if it is a toss up between 2 players is how close to a price rise they are. I always go for the one closest to going up in price.

      1. What are the weak links in my team at the moment? I will try to attend to them rather than vanity or 'popularity' transfers. For instance, many on FFS have been talking about which Liverpool midfielder to have. But with Payet in my team I don't need any of them, Payet is doing just fine thanks.

      2. For defenders, how do they fit my defender rotation over the next 8-12 weeks? I look at clubs in the price range concerned (and team defensive stats) rather than individuals initially. Only with premium defenders am I more specific, for instance I am dead set on bringing Clyne in soon. But I will usually only have one (or two) of those.

      3. For attackers, assessing gametime risk honestly is important, especially at CL clubs. I will also factor stats, fixtures and potential price changes in. For instance, I have no intention of bringing Son (or any other Spurs player) in until GW14 or 16, after the CL group stage is done and when Spurs' fixtures improve.

      4. I will use the eye test when I go to games, less so from watching on TV. Jonty has recently observed that Conte's Chelsea play to the striker more than previously, favouring Costa and hampering Hazard for FPL purposes. That was something that I could see (and make use of) 4 weeks ago.

      5. Generally I suffer from thinking too long-term sometimes. I brought Bony in rather than Benteke on wildcard precisely for the 7 fixtures Stoke now have - SUN hul SWA whm BOU wat BUR. Unfortunately his lack of visible form means that he is "the weakest link" and is about to leave my team before he gets to play them. 🙁

Form and fixture mostly. But I add little bit of observation/ assumption/previous experience here.

Preferring Costa over Ibra in early gws has been proved fruitful for me. In many cases debutantes who start with big points fade away quickly. For ManU, Di maria/Memphis/Shaw/ Darmian proved that. Rashford is an exception.

I saw many people are hesitant over Costa for his YCs/ aggressive play. But you should remember of Suarez in 13-14. It took him some matches (can't recall) to receive his final YC that put him for ban. In the meantime he scored freely.

I got Antonio after his switch to wing, I also considered Payet's injury. To my understanding Antonio becomes main source of point in absence of Payet. Now after Payet's return I'm considering ditching Antonio. Had Payet not that costly I would swap him happily.

I transferred in Sanchez and Lukaku just after their first big points and wish to do with KDB at the same. Puncheon is another I'm holding right now with great expectation.

And finally this year seems to be good for strikers. So I think we should stick with 3 very good strikers. CS points seems to be hard to come, but may be from mid November/early December there will be CS like years before.

Form and Underlying stats for me. Fixtures are something I never really worth about, if a player is in form then fixtures aren't that important. The goals and assists imminent tables are the main sources of info I use on the site. Joining a bandwagon early is great but picking a player up before the bandwagon starts is what gets you those leaps in ranks. It's something I've focused on this season and I'm at my highest rank at this stage.

-Combination of fixtures and form (form sligthly in advance).
      - Use risk averse approach.
-Always choose the more "sane" option, both in transfers and captaincy picks, unless I am chasing with few rounds left.
-Wait with transfers until the day before next gw, even though it means paying 0,1m - 0,2m premium (I break this rule if it as a matter of getting a player or not.

This approach has worked well as you can see on my overall ranking since I started playing FPL. 😀

As I mentioned above (before seeing this), Bony is already in my team and I am about to remove him. It seems a bit crazy considering the fixtures, after all this is a guy that scored 17 goals in the last season when he was starting regularly.

Unfortunately, he may not be able to replicate that at Stoke. He's a big lad that hasn't had regular games for 2 years and didn't have a proper pre-season either by all accounts. It's also true that he had a very different team around him at Swansea - 2 very quick wingers who provided many crosses and a talented, unselfish #10 behind him (many of his goals were created by Sigurdsson).

At Stoke he has none of that. Arnautovic and Shaquiri aren't 'crossing' wingers, they like to cut inside and score themselves. They are also very selfish (especially Arnautovic). And Allen is no Sigurdsson. He's a good team player but doesn't have Siggy's creative talent. So it may be that Bony struggles to fire at Stoke at all, at least compared to what he did at Swansea.

I'm a bit stubborn and don't like losing Bony really. But doing so enables me to bring Walcott back in to my team (I lost him on wildcard). I have to think that the upside with Walcott is far bigger than with Bony, much as I'd like it to be otherwise.

      1. pompeyfan
        • 16 Years
        9 years, 2 months ago

cheers for these thoughts. It's certainly a worry about his condition and the team style that you mention. However when he was with Vitesse he didn't have the most traditional wingers either side, like Reis & Ibarra and sometimes even Havenaar up with him, and he still managed to score 51 in 69. Obviously this is a different level but he's produced hear before as you say.

It's still a big punt though.. Fortunately if I bring him in it will also fund me bringing in Walcott & Koscielny.

they're 50-50 imo. bellerin more attacking no doubt but i can see kosc getting a goal for every 2 bellerin assists. giroud's absense is interesting too, it makes kosc a main target on set-pieces but that can also harm him as it means the opposition's number 1 aerial defender picks him up instead of giroud.

to my mind Bellerin is a better player than Kos but I watched Hector intently against Burnley and he had so many touches in the attacking 1/3 but hardly ever put the ball into the box. attracted defenders and then pulled the ball back to the edge of the box.

Maybe needs Giroud back in the team as an incentive to cross.
The return of Giroud will likely bring more points for both players

Also a better side will allow more counter attacking opportunities for Hector so maybe that the fixtures are a little too good at the moment for him to be first choice over Kos,

Out of hibernation after last week's horror show. GW Rank was 3.8m. The last three weeks have seen my two worst ever gameweeks (2.2m in GW 5 is my 2nd worst ever). Took a -12 hit to get in people like Alexis and Spurs defence this week, hope I don't get bitten yet again...
