Stoke manager Mark Hughes has mixed feelings, Tottenham’s Son keeps on scoring, Liverpool duo Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino also notch as Brazil coast against Bolivia, whilst Hector Bellerin is set for scans on an ankle problem

Mixed News for Sparky

The footballing lord giveth and then he taketh away – at least where Stoke boss Mark Hughes is concerned.

His two highest-scoring Fantasy Premier League midfielders, Marko Arnautovic (7.2) and Joe Allen (4.8), made telling contributions for their national teams.

Arnautovic, with just the one Premier League goal to his name, has cut a rather frustrated figure at Stoke this season, so his double for Austria against Wales would have done him, and his club manager, the power of good.

Add in Allen’s stunning volley for the Welsh – his third goal in as many matches – and Hughes should have been purring.

Instead, he had to endure the news that Allen later limped off with a hamstring issue that makes him a doubt for a Sunday match with Georgia, according to Wales manager Chris Coleman.

“He had a twinge in his hamstring, so that’s why we took him off immediately. We’ll assess him in the next 24-48 hours. He’ll be scanned and it’s how he reacts. If anything comes up on the scan, we wouldn’t gamble with any of the players because it’s not in our interests to do that. Joe belongs to Stoke City and we have to send him back in the condition that we received him. That’s why we he came off.”

The scoring in the match was an all-Premier League affair, with Tottenham defender Kevin Wimmer (4.7) hitting an own goal for the Welsh.

Son Keeps Shining

Man of the moment Heung-Min Son (7.6) took his Tottenham form back home with the winning goal, and an assist, for South Korea against Qatar.

The Spurs midfielder, on a run of four goals and two assists in four domestic starts, is this week’s top FPL transfer target, with more 131,000 managers drafting him into their sides ahead of a trip to the Hawthorns.

And he continued his great start to the season when he fired home from an assist by Swansea midfielder Sung-yeung Ki (5.2).

Ki, who has started just two league matches this season, had earlier opened the scoring from a Son pass, giving a timely reminder to new Swans boss Bob Bradley of his pedigree.

As did Gylfi Sigurdsson, who bagged an assist in Iceland’s 3-2 win over Finland.

Reds Pair In the Goals Again

Liverpool duo Philippe Coutinho (8.3) and Roberto Firmino (8.4) both scored as Brazil swept past Bolivia 5-0 in the early hours of this morning.

Coutinho played the full 90 minutes and also earned an assist – teeing up Firmino, who emerged as a second-half sub to find the net.

Although both have a trip to Venezuela in the early hours of Wednesday morning, it’s worth noting that Liverpool don’t play in Gameweek 8 until 8pm on Monday night at home to Man United, giving both plenty of time to recuperate.

Following that clash, the Reds’ superb upcoming schedule – which takes them all the way up to Boxing Day (or Gameweek 18 to you and I) is set to earn Jurgen Klopp’s regulars significant Fantasy investment.

Tadic on Top Form

Dusan Tadic (7.2) played a part in all of Serbia’s goals in a 3-0 win over Moldova.

The Southampton midfielder supplied the assists for his nation’s first two strikes before netting a third.

Tadic is in solid form going into Gameweek 8’s home match with Burnley – he has a goal and two assists from his last four league starts, blanking in just one of those outings – and famously scored 23 points in the GW8 of 2014/15 as the Saints humbled Sunderland 8-0.

If the theorists are to be believed, Southampton’s supposed taste for stellar GW8 performances – they also beat Chelsea in London last season – could signal another big day for Tadic.

Bellerin Concern for Gunners

Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin is set to be assessed after sustaining an ankle problem whilst on duty for Spain Under 21s last night.

Early reports suggest that the right-back’s issue is not thought to be too serious, though with an FPL ownership in excess of 25%, further updates will be eagerly awaited.

Bellerin has risen to third in the FPL defender standings on the back of three clean sheets, an assist and five bonus points in the last six Gameweeks.

With Swansea, Middlesbrough and Sunderland up next for Arsene Wenger’s side, further points look on the agenda if he proves his fitness in time.

More Right-Backs in Focus..

Man United’s Antonio Valencia (5.6) was the star of the show for Ecuador in a 3-0 win over Alexis Sanchez’ Chile late last night.

Stationed in an attacking midfield role, the Red Devils’ defender grabbed a goal and assist, with namesake Enner Valencia (5.4) earning an assist.

Sanchez played the full 90 minutes for the beaten visitors.

Everton’s Seamus Coleman (5.5) scored his first ever international goal to help the Republic of Ireland to an unimpressive 1-0 win over Georgia last night.

Owned by just 4.7% of FPL managers, Coleman continued the fine domestic form that has seen him serve up a goal, a clean sheet and four bonus points in the last three Gameweeks.

With trips to Manchester City and Chelsea in the next four, though, our faith in the Toffees’ defence is on the slide.

Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic (5.9) was also on target in Serbia’s win over Moldova.
He can only hope his club boss Antonio Conte, who dropped him for last weekend’s trip to Hull, was at least reminded of his threat going forward.

Finally, City’s Pablo Zabaleta earned an assist in Argentina’s 2-2 draw in Peru, with Everton’s forgotten centre-half Ramiro Funes Mori (4.8) opening the scoring.

Sergio Aguero was replaced on 73 minutes after failing to find the net.

    On WC,

    Heaton/Pickford
    Vertonghen/Mustafi/Morgan/Holebas/Pieters
    Sanchez/Firmino/Son/Snodgrass/Capoue
    Aguero/Lukaku/Wilson

    Thoughts?

Quite a lot of money in defence. Maybe downgrade Holebas or Pieters to Amat to save some cash? Nice team though.

I couldn't find an attractive alternative to upgrade Wilson and Snoddy as I believe there is no tempting choice close to their price range. My ML rival has Deeney so I don't consider having him & Snodgrass has great fixtures. But I would be more than happy to hear your thoughts.

Snodgrass + Capoue is ok (I own both) but my attack is Kun, Lukaku, Costa so I suggest you to upgrade on of Snodd/Wilson.

Morgan, Pieters, Wilson -> Amat, 4.5, Benteke possible?
if not than maybe go Pickford + Stoke 4.0 GK?

Downgrade on of Mustafi/Vert would solve it 🙂

But very much up in the air at this point. With so many great attacking options he may not be risked

Regarding the article and Iceland in particular it's worth mentioning that Gylfi missed a penalty and Gudmundsson (Burnley) got an assist aswell. Otherwise a great read.

if you have 5.9 for a midfielder it has to be Snoddy. if you've got under 5 million for a mid it has to be Allen. Wilshere just doesn't make sense with Snoddy offering so much more. so Allen.. just for the money saved and the lack of alternatives under 5

What about a punt on Isaac success instead?

Could have big upside in a draft league- and can maybe afford to take the risk if you're targeting lower priced players (no disrespect to Wilshere/Allen etc)

Just had a quick look and noticed current totals for players above 30 or 40 points in ewch position are

    Def: 6 (30+) of which 2 (40+)
    Mid: 19 (30+) of which 9 (40+)
    Forw: 7 (30+) of which 2 (40+)

This is a very strong case for 3-5-3 in my opinion. Any views?

It's been done to the death now. 343 is the main formation even with all of these stats. It's a stunt where mids are doing well. Overall I feel 343 is much easier to implement and more effective because you have 3 strikers. If you pick the right strikers who are focal to their team it's hard for 352 to compete

      1. Alnair
        • 9 Years

It only really competes with OOP mids. Firmino, Son, Sanchez, Antonio (?) are the only reason it competes.

With none of the cheap strikers looking consistent, I'm going with 3-5-2 right now. Midfield of Sanchez, Firmino, Walcott, Son and Sterling feels slightly wrong, but still got Aguero and Deeney up front and a reasonable defence.

Looks good value on paper, but doubt he'll get many save points (Liverpool don't concede as many shots on goal as say Sunderland or Hull), yet Pool never seem to keep clean sheets either. Risk of Mignolet coming back in if he doesn't play well as well. I prefer Foster - although upcoming fixtures aren't great he's a solid if unspectacular season keeper.

    Pickford Grant
    Koscielny Mustafi Vertonghen Holebas Amat
    Sanchez Sterling Firmino Son Snoddy
    Aguero Austin Deeney

Thinking of going with a heavy backline and a fluid formation(3/4/3 or 3/5/2) on WC. looks good? alternative is Mustafi to Rose, Sterling to Wally and Austin to Defoe.

    Greetings chaps!

I've got £1.0m in the bank and my patience with Ross Barkley has finally worn thinner than a stick thin fella on hunger strike.

    So, would I be best;

    A) Doubling up on top-of-the-form-guide Arsenal, with two plum home ties up next… Walcott IN

    B) Doubling up on top scorers Liverpool, with decent fixtures for the next few months and no European commitments… Firmino IN

    Or…

    C) No double up, but get a piece of the unbeaten Tottenham pie, meaning I’ve got Sanchez, Mane and… Son IN

It's a tough old shout, do I go with the form team, the top scoring team, or the unbeatable team?

Rest of my team as it stands; Sanchez, Antonio, Sterling, Mane, Barkley, Aguero, Rashy (Dio) and i only have the 1 FT...

    Any thoughts welcome!!!

I would keep Mane- he can be inconsistent but in a draft league over the course of the season he should do well and has started the season on fire for a great Liverpool team

Both have AFCON so that evens out

Mahrez may be rotated a bit more because of ucl- Ranieri hinted a bit at this, particularly with Gray, Musa, Kapustka waiting to get games and no league cup for them

Mane tends to either explode or get a 2 pointer, whereas Mahrez's returns tend to be more consistent.

As Mahrez is probably off pens now, I'd keep Mane.

Thoughts on this week’s options would be very much appreciated:

1FT. With hindsight I really wish I’d saved last week…but panicked and went Defoe > Rash! I have 0.4 ITB. Not made any paid transfers thus far, but not averse to the notion.

Dropped to 35pts behind our ML leader after his failed bid to land Sanchez for De Bruyne (missed overnight Alexisincrease) paid off nicely with Firminio’s haul…

    His team (shared players starred*):
He has 2.6ITB, but he IS averse to making paid transfers!:

    Lloris, Jaku;
    Walker*, Coleman, Morgan, Smith*, Amat;
    Firminio, Cout, Antonio*, Bolasie, Capoue*;
    Aguero*, Lukaku*, Rash*

My current lineup with selling prices:

Cech 5.5 (SWA). Sub - Heaton 4.5 (sou)
Walker 5.7 (wba), Smith 4.5 (HUL), Pieters 4.4 (SUN). Sub - Kone 4.5 (stk), Collins 4.6 (cry)
Sanchez 11.1 (SWA) Mane 8.9 (MUN) Antonio 7.1 (cpl) Redmond 5.9 (BUR). Sub – Capoue 4.9 (mid)
Aguero 13.0 (EVE) Lukaku 9.2 (mci) Rashford 6.8 (liv)

    Players on their way out:

Redmond – but has decent fixture this week
Collins – decent fixtures, if he plays…
Capoue – annoyingly have benched him for all his returns so far…might be worth downgrading to a decent 4.4 e.g. Hojijerg and bank the 0.5m?

    Players on my watchlist:

Son – seems excellent value at present and only have Walker otherwise from Spurs.
Lallana/Firminio – would quite like to double up on Liverpool, but funds probably only stretch to Lallana.
Snodgrass – could be a decent enabler
Cedric Souares – potentially a decent upgrade from Collins for 0.4
Holebas/Robertson - good fixtures and both 4.5 swaps

Any thoughts - is there an obvious single transfer I should make, should I lash out and take some hits, or should I just save and have a double juggle next week?!

    Cheers

      I'm in a similar situation

A lot to ponder, but not much info on offer with the international break on

Thanks - I'm definitely leaning that way at the moment. I've saved a transfer twice already when I didn't really have much of a gut instinct to go for a particular move - all other times I've made more or less immediate dealings as moves have seemed obvious. Do feel my defence could do with another mainstay 5.0 or 5.5 in there along with Walker and Cech at some point soon. May need to consider an Amat switch to facilitate.

a poster who every week would come out with her own 'Fran's picks' to rival the scout picks.

Unless he's referring to the ex. Depor club captain

2FTs, no Arsenal/Spurs coverage. What would you do:

    Mandanda, Pickford
    Coleman, Shaw, Stones, Evans, Amat
    Sterling, Coutinho, Antonio, Capoue, Marney
    Aguero, Ibra, Lukaku

    1. Alnair
      • 9 Years

Depends on whether you want Ibra in or not. I have a very similar team to you and I'm going Ibra, Antonio, Byram --> Wilson, Sanchez, Mustafi but it's up to you.

      Get some Arsenal/Spurs coverage 😉
      Antonio > Son
      Stones > Rose/Walker

Hmm, looks like we won't get Pickford until Jan WC then but still got at least a month where should be ok I'd say.

Pickford still yellow, but should be ok for next game, right? (I have Jak also so a little worried about double zero)

Yeah he'll 100% be ok for next game. Annoyingly it'll mean he's reset to 0% though so we'll miss a rise.

Austin or Defoe for longer term? Thanks.

When do things ever turn out for the longer turn?

I'd say Austin purely as saints are in form and creating chances, sunderland are not. Defoe is the better player though.

I prefer Austin. However, his injury history may make Defoe more reliable

Just watched Benteke's goals for aston villa and Austin's for QPR. Benteke is a much better player. He can create goals for himself and has good shooting abilities, apart from the obvious aerial prowess. Austin is more of a poacher. He is in the right place at the right time to tap in the goals. Was thinking whether transferring Benteke to Austin and using the extra 1 million elsewhere would be worth it. Probably not going to do it now.

    Which is better? WC Active.

    A) 3-5-2: KdB(Son placeholder and money in the bank)+Snodgrass+Diamonde
    B) 3-4-3: Son+Lukaku+Hojbjerg
    C) 3-4-3 now and Save 2 FTs for 3-5-2 later.

    Thanks.
