Say What

Autumn is now upon us; the season of interminable international breaks, cold winds and the chance to go to and from work without ever seeing the light of day.

Thankfully, plenty of managers and players are on hand to fill the Fantasy void with blasts of hot air and illuminating comments, which this week stretch from the new dawn at Arsenal to Sunderland’s flexibility, taking in a rise in Sterling, Palace performances and a bullish Burnley boss along the way.

Striking Stuff At Arsenal

It’s a great time to be Alexis Sanchez (11.3) – the midfielder is joint-top Fantasy Premier League scorer, with four goals, three assists and six bonus points to his name.

And Arsene Wenger’s decision to use him as a striker has been music to the ears of the 21.9% of FPL managers in Alexis’ corner.

The Frenchman had his doubts about the move.

“I must say the few times I tried him before, he was not convincing in that position. You start to think is that a wrong decision or do I have to give him more time? In the first two games I was not completely convinced but know, game after game, he’s growing into this position and getting better and better. Where he’s strong is that he can dribble, finish and also give a final ball.”

Sanchez recently likened himself to Messi, among others, and Wenger is happy to throw in another arguable comparison.

“He has similarities with Luis Suarez.”

Well they are both from South America and have all their own teeth…

Another Sanchez supporter is Theo Walcott (7.7).

“Myself and Alexis are linking up very well and that seems to be clicking as well.”

That’s almost an understatement – the duo have seven goals and six assists between them – and it’s no surprise that they, together with Laurent Koscielny (6.2), make it into the top eight for players transferred in this Gameweek.

“Everyone is on a high at the moment and we have to make sure it stays that way.

Swansea and Middlesbrough at home and then Sunderland away is a good set of fixtures for the Gunners to do just that.

Pardew Praise For Born-Again Christian

Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew has been doing a bit of comparison work himself, likening striker Christian Benteke (7.6) to Teddy Sheringham and Andy Carroll.

Cynics might think that suggests the Belgian’s got no pace and is injury-prone, but Pardew knows what he means.

“Christian is a handful when anything comes into the box and if he pulls onto the full back I don’t think there’s anyone in the league that can cope with him.”

Three goals from his last four starts is proof of that, with Pardew claiming Palace are now performing at ‘another level’.

“You can’t play with two strikers. If you do, your two midfielders have to be outstanding and not many teams can do that. But if you are going to have three midfielders you need to have two wide men and a number nine, they all have to contribute. The number nine wasn’t getting enough goals, nor were the wide men, so we changed it, which is why we have had the uplift that we have had.”

The wide boys in question are Wilfried Zaha (5.4) and Andros Townsend (6.3) and they both have a goal and an assist to their name thus far, with the latter convinced he, and the club, are hitting form.

“Like the club, it probably took me a few games to get going. My performances are slowly getting better and better and the Stoke game (goal, assist, three bonus points) was the level I want to be at on a consistent basis.”

Unbeaten in five, with three wins and two draws, lends weight to Townsend’s claims.

And it’s a befuddled West Ham for the Eagles next.

Moyes’ Back To Front Thinking

Jermain Defoe (7.2) aside, investing in Sunderland players this season has been as joyful as sharing a dressing room with Joey Barton.

But manager David Moyes could be about to put a smile on all our faces – by converting two defenders into attacking goal machines.

Okay, so this is Sunderland we’re talking about, so the machines might not come with much of a warranty, but the thought of Patrick van Aanholt (5.0) and Paddy McNair (4.4) doing damage to a defence that isn’t their own has pleasing Fantasy potential.

On Van Aanholt, Moyes said this.

“I’m pleased with the goals he’s come up with but I’m not pleased with some of the positions he’s been taking up defensive-wise. We did a bit of training last week with three at the back and four at the back with Pat playing further on, just to plant the seed in my mind as well.”

The Dutch defender has always got goals. He has two this season and banged in six (to go with four assists) last year.

With two away trips, to Stoke and West Ham, up next, he could be worth a punt – if he’s used further forward.

The same goes for McNair, who started for the first time this season in the 1-1 draw at West Brom.

“He’s an attacking midfielder. He was a No10 as a boy but as he grew he dropped back. He strikes the ball cleanly, is a good finisher and connects well. We’ll find exactly the right spot for him.”

Sunderland have managed just six goals in seven matches so far, so they need all the help they can get – and from wherever they can get it.

Antonio Anywhere

Another man showing his versatility is West Ham midfielder Michail Antonio (7.3).

Having performed out wide as both a full-back and a winger this season, coach Slaven Bilic gave new hope to the 17.1% of FPL managers still holding onto Antonio (7.3) by using him as a striker in the 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough.

“We were not totally happy with the way our strikers had done in the last few games and we were missing that presence and quality up front, so that’s why we opted for Antonio to play there. He has played as a striker and with his pace and energy we expected him to cause them problems, which is what he did really well in the first half.”

Antonio did end up drawing a second straight blank, however. But as the 11,757 brave souls still clinging on to Simone Zaza (6.6) will confirm, that’s par for the course for Hammers strikers this season.

And a decent (ish) run of fixtures – Palace and Everton away and home to Sunderland and Stoke – should give Antonio a solid shot at adding to the five goals he’s managed so far.

Sterling On The Up

Everyone, we’re told, hates Raheem Sterling (8.6) – except when it comes to the FPL.

His 26.7% ownership figure makes him the third most popular midfielder in the game, and four goals and three assists have helped him to an impressive 45-point haul.

His finishing, in particular, has marked out the new Sterling from the old, and he’s quick to credit new coach Pep Guardiola for that.

“The new manager has just been drilling into my head that I need to be more decisive. When I got into the box against Swansea (where Sterling scored his fourth of the season) I just said to myself ‘I am going to slow it down here and take it to my tempo’. The movement was sharper once I got past the defender, I assessed my options rather than just kicking the ball and hoping for the best and really just found a placement for the shot.”

It’s reassuring that £49million doesn’t just get you someone into ‘kicking the ball and hoping for the best’. It really is.

Burnley Set Fair

Someone with a rather more analytical approach is Burnley boss Sean Dyche, who knows the value of a decent set piece when he sees one.

“Roughly 30 percent of goals are scored from set plays, so we’ve got to defend them well and deliver with them, and we’ve done well over the last year. It’s important again, an important detail within a game, and has to be addressed. It’s another part of your armoury.”

Set pieces accounted for precisely 100 percent of Burnley’s goals in the 2-0 win over Watford, with Jeff Hendrick (5.4) and Michael Keane (4.9) scoring from corners and the latter adding a clean sheet and two bonus points for a chunky 14-point performance.

But Steven Defour (6.0) is arguably the best Fantasy option of them all – he’s the man providing all that dead ball goodness and already has three assists (and a goal) to his name from just six starts.

Upcoming matches at Southampton and home to Everton are likely to be tight affairs. Defour’s deliveries could be the difference.

Foxes Never Quit, But They Could Do With A Rest

Claudio Ranieri has hinted that he might well start rotating his Leicester City charges after they struggled to a point against Southampton following their latest midweek heroics in the Champions League.

“Maybe it was harder to think about, when we play every three days. Maybe at the end of the 22 days, it was much better to give some rest to some players. Because it’s true Southampton played one day after us. They changed seven players I changed just one. It’s not enough, but for this reason I am very, very happy.”

Juggling the demands of European and domestic football is one of the toughest tests for a manager and how Ranieri rises to that challenge looks likely to have a big impact on FPL teams with Leicester players to the fore.

The Foxes’ next three matches following on from CL action come at home and are all very tempting – Palace, West Brom and Middlesbrough.

FPL managers will have to keep a very close eye on who Ranieri decides to rest, with Riyad Mahrez (9.2/14.3% ownership) and Jamie Vardy (9.8/13.4%) of particular concern.

On the bright side, if Leicester continue their cracking Euro form, they’ll be through to the knockout stages nice and early, allowing Ranieri to rest his key men for domestic duties only.

Tottenham Holding On

After a successful switch from 4-2-3-1 to 4-1-4-1 continued with a 2-0 home win over Man City, Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that one holding midfielder is enough for Spurs.

“You talk a lot about the battle in the middle of the pitch and to keep possession — that was one of the keys and our mentality was to be aggressive, to play in the opposite half and not only to run in behind them but if not when we have the play, to play in the way we played yesterday. It is the commitment of the team that helps us play in a different way and [still] believe. The design to play like this was not only yesterday, we played it in CSKA and in different games only with one holding midfielder and I think the future and the present of the team is to play one with one.”

Such forward thinking has harvested back-to-back victories, which should mean maximum pitch-time for the side’s attack-minded assets Heung-Min Son (7.6), Christian Eriksen (8.2) and a revitalised Dele Alli (8.2).

The FPL rush to Tottenham players has gathered some serious pace this week, with 125,130 transfers in making Son the most popular buy in the game, while Kyle Walker (5.9) and Jan Vertonghen (5.6) are in the top three for defenders attracting new owners.

Pochettino has so far tended to rest key assets in the Champions League – Walker was on the bench in Moscow – which is further good news for FPL bosses hoping to make hay from Tottenham’s next two fixtures, away at West Brom and then Bournemouth.

Experienced, successful FPL managers have rightly kept hold of Ibra.

I disagree tbh, Prophet. As evidenced earlier in the season with Capoue, he proved as to why PPG is very much the most accurate metric to gauge form & future performances.

Well Zasa, there is always an exception to the rule. We have seen in the pre-season how Capoue has played and judging on his PPG in pre-season people opted for him to start!

Fair enough, you make a valid point. Yet, like Ibra, this is still an ample & very versatile metric. In fact, I conjured up a captaincy formula which is largely based off PPG. It's had large success thus far with the likes of Ibra, Fer, & Capoue & am confident it will continue to do so.

Is it the end-all-be-all of stats? Perhaps not yet, but is at current the most wholesome & well-rounded of stats? I think that overtime, you'll find the answer to be a resounding yes.

Touches in the box have very little correlation with goals scored.

Have a look at a table in the members area and sort by tib and include goals scored and you week find loads with a lot of touches and not mammy goals and loads with not so many touches and a lot of goals. As I say no direct correlation.

Just look at the stats from last year. Some take loads of touches with very few shots, some take loads of touches but are poor finishers and their shots get blocked or are off target. It is just a redundant stat.

So how many touches correlates to a goal then? Oh whats that? it varies from player to player? Oh so there is very little correlation at all?

Too small a sample size for this season but you see loads down the list with goals scored and very few touches in the box and some with a lot of touches in the box and few goals scored. Look at last season for a full season of data and you will see it more clearly. Sorry to burst your bubble dude

I count 8 players with a combined 196 tib and zero goals that's an avg of almost 25 tib each and zero goals? Where is the correlation? Can you explain this?

You clearly are struggling with the meaning if the term correlation. I was just trying to stearate you right but keep on trucking with your delusion if you want.

                  You have a problem.

You wrote "Touches in the box have very little correlation with goals scored". I then said it was nonsense and I then showed you that it does...

I just did. The 8 players with zero goals from an average of 25 tib each maher up just over 33% of the top 23 players on your table? Can you not count? Or can you not see the zero in the goals column?

Go a step further advice that is a good table, look at the attempts per tib some have a attempt every 4 tib (top tib man) and some have more attempts than tib one guy with 26 attempts and 21 tib iirc.

Seriously dude I've looked at this numerous times and over the seasons. It is a terrible stat just like crosses as a metric for assist potential.

Past performance is no guarantee of future results - but that applies to other stats too.

It is probably the best single indicator of future FPL points (as distinct from the individual components such as goals, assists, clean sheets, bonus points, cards, saves and penalties), especially if you break it down into homes and aways and take it over a sufficient number of matches.

But combining this with other stats should considerably improve the forecast.

Is Kun really a straightforward captainicy pick this week?

Ronald Koeman has faced Man City 4 times in his PL managerial career so far. Even though those games offered us a high number of goals (average of 3.75 goals per game in the last 4 meetings), Aguero managed to find the net only once in 3 of those matches (he missed the last meeting between the two teams due to injury).

What is more, in the last 3 meetings in the league against Everton, Kun played twice and failed to score on both occassions. Needless to say, Koeman's Everton will be much tougher to beat than Martinez's...

Thus, should we start to reconsider Aguero as our next captainicy option and look at the likes of Sanchez, Son or Costa?

Also, a more controversial question may be raised: with Everton and Southampton next (both at home), and with huge games against Barca in the foreseeable future, can the money be spent in a wiser way when on Wildcard? City's schedule:

    15.10 Everton
    19.10 Barcelona
    23.10 Southampton
    26.10 Manchester United
    29.10 West Brom
    1.11 Barcelona

Kun may even get some minutes against United in the League Cup - given the prestige of the Derby, we may well see him feature in this game. This fixture schedule really puts his minutes in the league games under question. And I'm not saying I've got the balls to go without him on my Wildcard - not yet at least. But the prospects of having a phenomenal midfield 5 with solid forwards is incredibly tempting indeed...

I'm really sorry, but I just don't agree with large chunks of this. I understand your points about his schedule, fair enough.

However, did you know that Aguero hadn't managed a single goal in his last appearances v Swansea, until their recent game where he went on to notch 2 goals. Looking at a players past performances against a particular team, just doesn't represent anything tangible that can indicate future performance, there are just too many variables.

If you had to bet your house on any striker to score this weekend, who would you chose? When you think about it this way, does it matter that he's only scored once vs Everton in recent times.....nope!

I would also add that he is likely to have some Captainers this week who are worried about the potential of Sanchez being rested again this weekend as he was after the last international break.

I won't try to desperately to stand by my point, because everything you wrote is correct. He has a good chance to score against Everton, no doubt. I just want to clarify that there are potentially better captainicy options up there for GW8 and GW9 - therefore, justifying his 13.0 price may be more difficult, especially for Wildcarders, in the next weeks, if you are not going to captain him. Just my opinion, or feeling even, that it may be *that* time of the year when you don't necessarily need Aguero.

Argentina play Peru on 7th October and Paraguay on Wednesday 12th October in two FIFA World Cup South America qualifying matches, and Aguero is expected to play.

Thanks! Then the ‘might get rested’ argument against Alexis also applies to Sergio, I would say.

So who to captain? Costa? I’m tempted to bring in Bellerin (to get a defender that actually have a decent chance of getting more than 2 points in a gameweek) and Snodgrass (for Hull’s promising fixtures) for Baines and Antonio, although it would cost me 4 points, and then captain Bellerin. Madness?

Costa, Aguero and Sanchez all look good captaincy options, with little to choose between them - see what their managers say next Friday after they've returned from their internationals.

Captaining Bellerin would be a punt. Arsenal should keep a clean sheet against Swansea and he might get a bonus point or two to go with it, but it isn't guaranteed. He has only got one assist and no goals so far, and is currently flagged as 75% chance of playing.

Bellerin might be worth a hit even if you don't captain him if Baines is still flagged and you expect him (Bellerin) to outscore Valencia or Holebas by at least 4 points (you should definitely start Smith).

Not sure that Snodgrass is an improvement over Antonio, who has 4 good fixtures before they turn bad.

Thank you so much for helpful advice!

It seems like a good idea to wait for Friday, naturally, and there’s still one international game left. Benteke (c) against West Ham could also be interesting, although I don’t believe Benteke would score more than one. And there hasn’t been particularly many headed attempts against West Ham.

I think Antonio might very well outscore Snodgrass in gameweeks 9 and 11 when West Ham has Sunderland and Stoke at home. The idea of downgrading him to Snodgrass is to afford an Arsenal and a Tottenham defender over the coming gameweeks. Since my competitors have Koscielny and Walker, I hope to close the gap by bringing in Bellerin and Rose instead, even though it costs. Sound? I will wait to see whether Bellerin’s knock (?) is serious, of course.

I could naturally save the free transfer for next week, but I do think there’s a good chance that Snodgrass will get more poits away to Bournemouth than Antonio will get away to Palace. But perhaps I’m too pessimistic about Antonio taking West Ham’s recent performances into account. Who would you rather have in gameweek 8, Snodgrass or Antonio? Snodgrass will likely be onboard from gameweek 9 anyways.

In the longer run, I’m also looking at downgrading Foster (to Pickford) and possibly Benteke (to Austin in gameweek 11?) and Capoue (to Fletcher) to allow for a decent Puncheon upgrade, by the way. Perhaps to Son. It is tempting to do something like Puncheon and Agüero to De Bruyne and Lukaku, however.

It is certainly very desirable to have an Arsenal and a Spurs defender, but I wouldn't worry about differentials at this early stage of the season - just get the ones that you expect to score the most points.

Do you expect Snodgrass to outscore Antonio this GW by at least 4 points? If not, then it may not be worth a 4 point hit - except insofar as it acts as an enabler for upgrades elsewhere. Both of them have blanked for the last 2 GWs, although Snodgrass did have more difficult fixtures. West Ham's defence is terrible and they have only scored 8 goals, but Antonio has scored 5 of them (including one against Man City away) so I wouldn't write him off yet.

Puncheon and Aguero to De Bruyne and Lukaku could be a good move when KDB is fit again, but I also expect Son to do very well - he has excellent underlying stats as well as lots of FPL points and I don't think Spurs can afford to drop him.

Thank you again for sharing you thoughts!

I do expect Bellerin to eventually outscore Koscielny, but the £0.3 could still be used better somewhere else, naturally. There’s not much seperating Walker and Rose, it seems, now even the price is the same, but I have the impression that Rose gets forward more often than Walker. However, Walker might be less injury prone, so it’s a close race.

Cédric is another defender that I would like to have in my team. If he’s fit for next gameweek, I could replace Baines with him for free and wait with replacing Antonio with Snodgrass. Good idea?

What do think about Sánchez vs Walcott, by the way? Although Sánchez seems better, he currently can’t possibly be considered to be £3.6 better. If I had wildcarded now, I would consider going for Walcott to afford Agüero, Costa and Lukaku in front – together with a strong defence and a fairly decent midfield (including Son, naturally).

                    How’s your team doing?

Cedric was impressive in GWs 5 and 6, but like Bertrand he is currently flagged as an injury doubt.
Smith of Bournemouth is another possible replacement for Baines. He has an excellent home record, but a terrible away one.

Sanchez and Walcott would be almost level on points if Walcott had scored that penalty against Liverpool in GW1, but Cazorla (who probably wasn't on the field at the time) is Arsenal's regular penalty taker.
It's a difficult choice. Sanchez may be more explosive and could get a run of double digit scores, which would make him a strong captaincy option, but as you say the money saved by choosing Walcott instead could perhaps be used profitably elsewhere.

My team's made a terrible start to the season, and is currently only just inside the top million. I can't believe the number of silly errors I have made already, including playing my wildcard far too early (in GW2) and taking too many unnecessary hits, most of which made my team worse rather than better.
In my 8th year of playing FPL I really ought to know better by now!

                        Thanks again!

Smith I already have and intend to play together with Holebas. My other defenders (Valencia, Evans and Baines) will surely get below 2 points this gameweek. There’s a chance that Valencia gets an assist, albeit I wouldn’t bet on it.

If I don’t make any transfers this gameweek (have 1 free), my team will be the following (with £0.3 to spend).

                        Heaton (Foster)
Valencia / Smith / Holebas (Baines / Evans)
Sánchez / Firmino / Antonio / Puncheon (Capoue)
                        Agüero / Costa / Benteke

Not great, but hopefully there are worse teams out there. My current rank is 123k, but I expect a significant drop over the coming gameweeks. I think I need better defenders, and I would like to upgrade Benteke to Lukaku.

But then De Bruyne returns, suddenly Ibrahimovic‘s shots end up in the net, and perhaps even Hazard will pick up where he started this season – and everything will just get messy.

I guess good team structure is the key at that stage, so there’s no need to shuffle around too much to get in form players with good fixtures.

                        * * *
With all your knowledge, you will make a significant jump from this point onwards! Your team is somewhat similar to mine (which probably isn’t a good thing – but let’s forget about that), but you have Sterling and Defoe, and Azpillicueta will be really good when Conté sorts out the Chelsea defence.

I guess your first priroty at this point is to replace Negredo. But Watford at home might be a good oppurtunity for him to return to the scoresheet. So I guess save for now, and then upgrade him to someone like Deeney next week with funds from downgarding Antonio when he fails to score against Palace?

I would certainly like to replace Negredo with a better player who might even be cheaper, but I do not consider that to be my top priority as I consider that I can make bigger improvements elsewhere - I have not yet given up hope that Capoue might come good again, so Negredo can sit on my bench while I make other changes.

There are very few players in my squad that I am entirely happy with, and I would probably replace most of them if I still had my wildcard.

Sorry Mick, I forgot you already have Smith - good choice!
You've made a much better start to the season than I have, but I'm not always this bad - I have had a couple of top 4k finishes, but I'm not consistent enough.
I certainly don't intend to repeat that extremely early wildcard again in a hurry. I ignored one of my basic principles and played in as a kneejerk reaction to get Ibra in, when taking a 4 point hit instead would have been a far better option.
I will also try to cut down unnecessary transfers from now on, or at least think a bit harder about their possibly unfortunate consequences - I don't normally make that many.

Playing 3 games without scoring against Koeman is too small a sample size to bare much judgement on IMO.

Also leaving him out of your wildcard just makes it hard work to get him back in once you've admitted your mistake.

This, once you look past his immediate 2 fixtures (which are at home) he has 4 games where he is definitely captain in the FPL teams he is in. And given his price of 13.1 to bring in him means taking hits.

Also question is who is a better alternative from the big hitters for the next 2 fixtures? Costa has LEI, MUN and is on 4 yellows. Kane is out injured. Vardy (che, CPL); Ibra (liv, che); Sturridge (MUN, WBA) and Lukaku (mcy, bur) are the alternatives. Vardy is off form, Sturridge is in and out of the team but depending on Lallana injury could be a decent punt and one off Ibra/ Luka are in all our sides but fixtures are against them.

Aguer-yo may be a debatable captaincy option but going Aguer-no is very risky with limited upside.

Is there a quality 4.5 defender?

One of my potential transfer possibilities includes getting one in, but I can't see one apart from Holebas, who is on 4ycs.

Maybe Robertson from Hull? Francis from Bournemouth? Such a dearth in talent
