It’s a quandary that has been rattling around the brains of Fantasy managers for the last week or so. With cut-price forwards offering decent returns, many Fantasy managers are reshaping their midfields ahead of a hectic Christmas period.

Nani, Rafael Van der Vaart and Juan Mata have been the chief protagonists for differing reasons. The United man’s 18-point haul against Wolves has many juggling budgets and looking to squeeze him in. Van der Vaart’s hamstring has seen plenty jumping ship and Mata’s consistency and flourishing form within a revived Chelsea team is starting to attract plenty suitors.

All three have a favourable run of fixtures on the horizon between now and the end of gameweek 20, when plans can be revised as the festive wildcard comes into play. Question is, then, is one, two or even all three the way to go?

We analyse our ICT Index and the Opta statistics over the previous four gameweeks, digging deep in order to examine each player’s potential over the hectic Christmas programme…

No. After the City match, Arsenal have a nice run of fixtures. If he doesn't score in Manchester he will certainly put a few in the upcoming weeks.
Out of your two remaining forwards, I would take out either Ade or Rooney. However, I don't it's worth it just to bring in the Yak. Perhaps for Ba...

True. I did had the same forward line as you a week ago, but did Rooney -> Ba to afford Allen -> Nani. It's annoying not to be able to have more 4 forwards as having Rooney as well would be nice. However, I think no other forward is more important to have than RvP at the moment.

I am finding it is actually pretty frustrating to have a more balanced squad (ie. no super cheap players). every week is a headache trying to seect which should start and which to bench. I think its easier for my decisions to just having 3 really garbage players so the bench pretty much picks itself!

This. One of the fascinating facets of the game is value for money. Yes, expensive defenders are coming to the fore for instance, but is it worth it at the expense of your attacking potential?

Yep, that's why the old 'think of Baines as an 8m midfielder' argument doesn't hold water - you have to compare his price to other players in his position.

Depends what your bank balance is like. I had 4.0 in the bank and was happy with my attackers. Needed to work on my defence, and if Baines is going to score highly this season then these next two weeks is a good time to start. Plus, I'll be the only one in my league to have him. Makes perfect sense to me. Mind you, I'll be switching him back to a cheapo soon enough.

Eh? I said you can't compare him to an 8m midfielder, because he's the most expensive defender - it's fairer to compare him with the most expensive midfielder.

No. You can still have Baines and your expensive midfielders. I think it's fairer to compare him with similair priced players.

OK - I think people should consider his price relative to other players in his position, just a different way of looking at it I guess.

I've actually thought abut it and I now get what you mean.

So if you have, for example, 12.8 to spend on a defender and a midfielder you can, again for example, have Baines and Formica OR Caulker and Bale.

I see what you mean now.

Think its bloody confusing to be honest. He's been praised twice on this board (both times by Mark I think) over the last couple of games without any reference to the fact that he didn;t get any game time at all. Shola started instead, and Ferguson and Smith came off the bench while Ben Arfa stayed on it.

I think definitely hold for another week, to see if he comes back in. The fact that Smith (!) and Ferguson (!!!!!!!!!) came off the bench last week when Newcastle needed some goals was unbelievable, given that Ben Arfa stayed there. There can be no human way he's been dropped below them in the pecking order. that makes me think something unusual was afoot last week and it'll change again this week, even if its just him appearing off the bench rather than staying on it.

On Sky Sports they suggested him getting left out against Norwich as tactical, rather than a case of him being dropped, and I can see that. Against Swansea, who defend so much better than Norwich and where it's more important to have players who are able to beat their man and create some room against a tight defence, I can see him being picked ahead of Shola.

If he's on the bench again this week, and neither Shola nor ba get injured, sell sell sell.

Pardew likes to play HBA just behind a lone striker and that's basically it. He needs to hold the position behind Ba to get game time I think. He never plays out wide at least.

I dumped Silva for Mata this week as he has better fixtures up until Wildcard season in my opinion, and I didn't want to get rid of Nani or Rafa ahead of the runs they have either. Planning to get him back with the WC though, unless my current big hitters are just too explosive to get rid of (unlikely)
