The Pre-Match Preamble - Gameweek 38 Preamble

This morning’s preamble finds us taking a different route. While we normally spend this time debating Rafael Van der Vaart’s hamstring, or the rotational whims of Roberto Mancini, this weekend we seem to have found some balance – an almost zen-like calm.

We’re pretty certain that Van der Vaart will start against Sunderland and, as for the City lineup, it seems cut and dry that we’ll see the big-hitters take the field against Arsenal on Sunday.

Instead then, we’ll grab the Saturday print press, and rinse through a few of the lesser concerns facing Fantasy managers this weekend.

Bendtner Forgiven?

The general opinion is that Nicklas Bendtner will return to the Sunderland attack, despite his alleged involvement in a car-wrecking spree that saw him arrested earlier this week. The Dane apparently came through a behind-closed-doors match in the week, having missed the Blackburn victory with a groin problem. Most of this morning’s papers have him in the Black Cats lineup at Spurs and we’ve now ousted Conor Wickham from our predicted lineup to make way for Bendtner’s likely return.

Check on Cheik

Nobody seems to know how Alan Pardew will set up his midfield for the visit of Swansea. With Dan Gosling suspended, Cheik Tiote’s fitness is the key. Recent reports found Pardew claiming that he was adjudged to be “30-70” for a return to contention for today’s game, but that’s been enough for many of Saturday’s press to put him in their Newcastle lineups. The likes of Mehdi Abeid, Alan Smith and Haris Vuckic are all being touted for starts in midfield – indeed The Sun opt for Abeid in their Magpies team, while The Guardian, The Independent and The Times, all feel that Tiote, if fit, will start. Those backing a Newcastle cleanie with Tim Krul, Danny Simpson or Ryan Taylor in their teams today, will certainly be hoping for positive news on the Tiote front.

Good Evans

Most of the morning’s press feel that we can expect a largely unchanged United lineup at QPR on Sunday. The back four is of particular interest of course. The majority of papers indicate that Jonny Evans will retain his start alongside Rio Ferdinand to offer strong value for Fantasy managers. Only The Guardian opt for Phil Jones within the back four, with most keeping the former Blackburn man in Alex Ferguson’s midfield. The press are split on a recall for Ashley Young – The Times and The Guardian bring him back with Nani on the opposite flank, but elsewhere the feeling is that “Differential” pick, Antonio Valencia, will keep his start.

Drenthe Doubts

Royston Drenthe is a player that earned some Fantasy investment ahead of Everton’s improved run of fixtures, only to fall foul of injury and miss the last three matches. Again, opinion is split on whether he will return this weekend. David Moyes is hoping that the Dutchman passes a fitness test and The Sun are amongst those who feel that Drenthe will start on the left against Norwich. The Times also go with that view, although The Guardian, The Independent and The Telegraph all opt for Bilyaletdinov in front of Leighton Baines on the left-wing with no place for Drenthe.

Call for Clint

It seems increasingly likely that Scout Pick Clint Dempsey will find himself pushed into the forward line for the visit of Bolton. A report this morning cast further doubt over Bobby Zamora’s fitness and, although Martin Jol has options in Andy Johnson, Bryan Ruiz and Mousa Dembele, it could well be Dempsey who is handed the centre-forward role, with two or more of that trio buzzing around him at the Cottage. The Times, The Independent and The Telegraph all opt to leave Zamora out of their predicted lineups.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Can you RMT please.

    Szczesny Ruddy

    Richards Jones Walker Enrique Simpson

    Sinclair Walters Silva Nani Gower

    Sturridge Adebayor RVP

I was thinking of making changes between now and GW 20 to have Bale & Mata in for Walters & Sinclair and scaling down my defence. It would mean losing Richards, Jones & Walker for cheap alternatives to give me an ideal midfield & attack. Is this worth doing or should I keep my defence as it is with good GW 20 fixtures for Enrique & Jones and Walker with a double GW?

Never has an outcome of a gameweek been so obvious:

Four of the people above me in my mini league have Vorm in Goal, none have Ba. He's my (c).

Cue.... Vorm clean sheet, and penalty save against Ba.

I think it's best in his current position as he can use his pace more cutting in and has a sweet left foot.

Not sure he is an out and out goal scorer, more a winger who provides too.

        Torres being sold,
Don't get me wrong - Chelsea need a clear out and most if not all those players won't be missed but Sturridge will find himself becoming more and more moulded into a winger and that's not his natural position IMO.

Because they can't get games? Sturridge can. I think you're being unrealistic, he's not good enough to lead the attack on his own, he's too selfish. Learning his game and doing well, seems to be enjoying himself too.

It's touching that you worry about his development so much, but i cant help but feel you're being a little irrational.

There is a difference between being hungry for goals, and making poor decisions. He could still have the hunger for goals but know when to pass and when to shoot. His game is definitely lacking in that respect. Also his shooting needs work. He will get there but right now he's exactly where he should be imo. Playing regularly and gettign experience

It's not easy to play as a centre forward in the Premier League, he still needs to bulk up and gain experience. I think AVB is handning him expertly. There are countless of great central strikers who have learned their trade in wide positions to gain confidence, experience etc. He'll get his chances.

You're underestimating the value of playing week in week out in a good team, which better team would take him up and play him as a centre forward?

This way he can bide his time for this season and see if he can get a central role for next season.

Seconldy the winger position in the 433 he has now is still way more central than any wing position in a 442 for example, he's still not resigned to just staying wide and crossing.

            I completely disagree.
If he was down the middle for the Newcasstle game he's have skinned their centre backs without doubt.
Playing down the wing and cutting into the box makes him predictable and that's why I think he didn't come away with more in that game.

No, the reason he didn't come away with more was because Krul absolutely murdered him. He got into at least five GREAT chances because he got to face a weak fullback instead of a strong centre back, and just failed in his finishing.

Krul knew what he was doing all the time because he was having to go across goal all the time.
Newcastle were playing such a high line that day. If Sturridge was middle he'd have had a hatful.

You're rating him too highly, he'll be a good Premiership striker if he can continue to develop - which he is doing at the wing. He's not the finished article.

I think it's the equivalent of Fergie playing Hernandez down the right personally.
Hernandez is only 1 year older.

You are talking rubbish. He was getting a ridiculous amount of space playing on the right, Drogba barely had a sniff playing down the middle. The only reason Sturridge didn't score more was poor finishing and decision making, simple as that.

I think if you asked Sturridge where he would want to be he'd say down the middle all day long.
Everyone forgets how clinical he was last year at Bolton.

I think he'll slowly get washed up at Chelsea on the wing.

Well I agree and his finishing could improve, but he has talent we must agree on that. I meant that he need strength in order to play central in the PL

I've done the same, but I can't see Westwood with a clean sheet this week, so I thought if captaining Ba goes tits up then Vorm might get some points again. Maybe I should be braver, because I am expecting an onslaught of Newcastle goals like the Yak did against Swansea the other week.

Reading on Twitter someone saying a lot of money coming in for Everton today, wondering that Norwich may be resting some players for game on tues. Good news for me if true - Baines (c) + Drenthe.

Everton have had 0 shots on target for last 2 games. (192 mins total)

Norwich will always rotate - Lambert may want his players fresh or to give them all a chance to play in the PL. They have had 0 CSs this season as well

so all my rivals gave the C to ade and i went rooney. What yall think ? How much points for ade and rooney ? My gut feeling is/was that sunderland will be a tough nut to crack for spurs and that ade may score 1 goal but not more than that

I can see the logic in that, Sunderland have the MON factor and Spurs have quite a few potential goal scorers - VDV, Ade, Bale, even Lennon and Modric could get one.

Darren Bent, once a fantasy stalwart now i wouldn't pay 6M for him. Villa are negative and have no supply- missing Downing and Young so much. If N'Zogbia doesn't come good they need to buy another winger or they could end up in a relegation battle
