Undiluted woe for United, unbridled joy for Southampton – Thursday’s Europa League matches were a study in contrast. Here’s how the two ties panned out.

Fenerbahce 2 Manchester United 1

Injuries, goal droughts and a manager publicly shaming his players; dropping to third in their Europa League group was the least of Manchester United’s worries following a dreadful performance in Turkey.

Even Wayne Rooney (8.6) scoring for only the second time in 14 matches this season did little to lift the gloom on a night of unremitting negativity for the Red Devils.

Paul Pogba (8.2) limped off with a thigh injury that makes him a doubt for Sunday’s trip to Swansea. Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.2) replaced him and again failed to score – he now has just one goal from his last 11 matches – while the team as a whole enjoyed 70% possession but did precious little with it.

A makeshift defence missing Eric Bailly (5.4), Antonio Valencia (5.5) and Chris Smalling (5.9) conceded a goal within two minutes and never recovered. Only the latter, who has a knock, is a short-term injury worry and the pair drafted in as centre-halves in Turkey, Daley Blind (5.8) and Marcos Rojo (5.2), looked uneasy all night.

Coach Jose Mourinho started Ander Herrera (6.3), who is suspended domestically, and Morgan Schneiderlin (4.6) in midfield in a bid to give Juan Mata (7.4) a rest. But the pair produced so little that the Spaniard was brought on at half-time.

By then, the die had been cast, as Mourinho was quick to point out post-match.

“A team that concedes after two minutes is a team that is not ready, not mentally prepared, not focused, not concentrated.”

Summer signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan (8.9) replaced the ineffectual Marcus Rashford (6.9) for the final half hour but had little impact, with Mourinho talking down his immediate prospects.

“He has to do more. That is as simple as that. We have big expectations in the club and lots of players for these positions. He has to play better than Mata and Lingard and Martial, and it’s a simple as that.”

After such a night to forget, the same could be said of the whole side.

Swansea City will suddenly fancy their chances of a Gameweek 11 “upset”, with United’s squad currently looking bereft of assets to tempt even a cursory glance from us Fantasy managers.

Manchester United XI: de Gea, Darmian, Blind, Rojo, Shaw, Herrera, Schneiderlin (Mata 45), Pogba (Ibrahimovic 30), Rashford (Mkhitaryan 61), Rooney, Martial.
Subs not used: Romero, Jones, Young, Fellaini.

Southampton 2 Internazionale 1

The Saints exorcised any demons left over from their unfortunate loss in the San Siro by grabbing a glorious win against their Italian opponents in the reverse fixture.

Inter had pinched victory against the run of play in Italy and threatened to repeat the trick when they scored from their first shot of the match at St Mary’s.

But a Virgil van Dijk (5.4) equaliser, after Oriol Romeu (4.5) had hit the bar, and then a Yuto Nagatomo own goal from a Dusan Tadic (7.2) cross turned everything round in a blistering second-half performance.

Tadic had blown a chance to level the match just before the break when he had a penalty saved. Charlie Austin (6.7), who was not on the pitch at the time, should remain the club’s spot-kick man if Tadic’s weak effort is anything to go by.

Austin came on in the second half, replacing Jay Rodriguez (6.3), one of five changes coach Claude Puel had made from the side that lost to Chelsea on Sunday.

In came Maya Yoshida (4.3), Sam McQueen (4.5) James Ward-Prowse (5.1) and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg (4.3).

Puel has generally juggled his resources well, but the workload for two of his attacking stars, Tadic and Nathan Redmond (6.0), has been high. Record signing Sofiane Boufal (6.8) was again on the bench, but played no part. Whether that suggests he will figure in Sunday’s trip to Hull remains to be seen.

The 12.8%-owned Austin, however, looks almost nailed-on for a start at the weekend.

Southampton XI: Forster, Martina, Yoshida, van Dijk, McQueen, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Højbjerg, Redmond, Tadic (Davis 76), Rodriguez (Austin 58).
Subs not used: Lewis, Clasie, Fonte, Boufal, Bertrand.

    Kun Luk

    Given Williams Stuani Love

In view that Walcott may not start or may make a cameo appearance, I'm thinking to:

Sub Brunt for Williams (-4) and play Grant instead of Walcott. Or are there any other defenders that j should consider?

    Thoughts?

        Sweet!

I'm a Gooner, but I think Spurs will score Sunday - fancy Fuchs' fixtures in the short term over ours, and I have Sanch anyway to cover us 🙂 - Schmikes injury did put me off a bit but Zieler is meant to be pretty decent from what I can see, plus I took a look at him on FM lol, so I think it'll probably be ok!

Is that why you're doing it, too??

He is on in a minute

You considered Morgan instead of Fuchs ?

For me it's Morgan and Brunt for free or Fuchs and Brunt for a hit...I'm thinking hit is probably worth it over next few game weeks for Fuchs

Yeah I love captain Morgan! I got both his goals last year and the one earlier this year.

But I am going Fuchs first. I think, cos he takes set pieces, he's more likely to get assists on a more consistent basis vs. goals for Morgan, plus he's down at 5.4 atm, so I'm happy to take the risk there currently.

Brunt is a good shout. I'd wait til after the Lei game / IB before getting him in, though - I'm looking at bringing him in for Amat to be my 3rd def, relegating Pieters to 4th.

That's the plan, Fuchs this week then the hit would come from selling Capoue for a 4.3 then upgrading Kone (finally) for Brunt. I don't like taking hits for defenders but Brunt is playing as a mid so feel ok with it. Could wait one extra week and play Kone against Hull but I don't think I trust Sunderland def against anyone in the league !

      Leicester City - UPDATE

Claudio Ranieri confirms Kasper Schmeichel is out for 4-6 weeks with a fractured hand.

CR: “Last night he had an operation. The surgeon said he's OK. The hands for the keepers as with the boxer is very important!”

CR: “Zieler gives me all the confidence”

CR: “Slimani, I think, is OK. Just Mendy is out but he's getting better. For the others everybody is OK”

CR: “Yesterday we made training session in Copenhagen. I check Slimani tomorrow [after Slimani was involved yesterday]”

CR: “Mendy starts to train. After the international break he's maybe ready”

CR: “Jamie [Vardy] is a goalscorer. All the goalscorers have a good and bad period. It's important to stay calm. He stays calm”

      CR: “I don’t put a deadline on Schmeichel’s injury as everyone's different. Maybe 2 weeks. Maybe 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7"

A little - I'm looking for a Valencia replacement so Morgs & Fuchs are on the menu. Zieler's not a liability, though - a very competent keeper. Just not as good as Schmeichel.

He is obviously a great keeper, but it's not just about his technical abilities. Things like communication with def and building confidence may take a while. Or could start on fire and be better than Schmeichel, who knows.

I think the Leicester defense have been overrated on here even before the Schmeichel injury. They still concede too many chances every game, probably because lack of defensive shield in midfield. Dont see similar upturn in CS like last season, even with green fix run.

      1. Pasqualinho
        • 16 Years

Fixtures have been a big factor, though - they look like potential CS at home for every game, and away from home they've been up against the top teams mostly (the only exception was Hull before they became rubbish)

I currently have a midfield of:
    Sanchez | Walcott | Coutinho | Son | Allen

I'm thinking Son > Gundogan or Redmond and leave Walcott on the bench.

Redmond vs Hull is very tempting, but City have a great run coming up. Any other viable options?

My plan was playing AOA with this Squad:

    Pickford
    Mustafi, Smith
    Sanchez, Firmino, Gündogan, Redmond, Allen
    Aguero, Costa, Lukaku

    (Jaku, Williams, Amat, Lenihan)

Now the "Team News" say that Redmond maybe sit on the bench, playing 90min against Inter?!?

Would you nevertheless play AOA or bring in Williams away @ CHE???

oh no, just seeing that Chadli is injured. I'll have to either play Capoue or take a hit and get a better players.

Yah, I was tempted to put him in after the break. Thinking of Brunty now instead

    Big decision!
    A) do Capoue to gundogan
    B) over next 2 weeks do Capoue, vertonghen,Evans, Wally to haz, kaboul, lovren and coquelin

For B I would need to start the transfers now in order to only have -4 hit, do you think it's worth it long term?

I'd say lovren, Kaboul and coq can wait, so I don't think it's essential, see what happens this gw and during internationals.

Do Capoue out definitely, but don't do anything else yet bro 🙂

Stoke fans want to see Bojan start, with Allen dropping into central midfield. This is nuts. Move your best player out of the position he is doing so well at, in order to field a player who has shown very little form over the last few months

Bojan not showing form is because he has not played. Whenever he does play he looks very good. I honestly believe that if Stoke revolved their attacking round Bojan they would be a greater unit. They have enough talent to make it work.

He didn't look that great when he started, at the beginning of the season.

He did. He always gets into great space and is class on the ball. Their play wasn't based around him which is why he wasn't as effective.

he's too inconsistent IMO. He showed great form a couple of years ago, but before and since then I haven't been that impressed. I actually gambled on him at the start of this season and had him in my team after seeing his pre season form.
