Two of the lowest scoring teams clash at the Riverside Stadium to create a predictable outcome, as a single set-piece delivery and far post header decide matters. Here’s the Stock Check from Gameweek 14’s final encounter.

On the Rise

Gaston Ramirez
Always the most likely member of Middlesbrough’s midfield to emerge as a potential Fantasy asset, the Uruguayan was their star performer on the night and proved a worthy matchwinner.

Ramirez has now provided two goals and an assist in his last four starts, although ‘Boro’s continued lack of cutting edge remains a major obstacle.

Aitor Karanka’s men have scored just 13 goals in their 14 Premier League matches and will likely continue to rely on defensive stability to earn them points.

While that’s the case, Ramirez seems destined to provide a short-term differential and little more. To compound matters, he appeared to suffer a knock to his foot which saw him withdrawn in the dying stages.

The Middlesbrough Defence
Far more likely to provide with an asset for the remainder of the season, Karanka’s back five earned a fourth clean sheet of the season this evening, albeit against a largely unambitious and impotent Hull City attack.

With George Friend sidelined, skipper Ben Gibson has proved the most popular target in the ‘Boro backline and he justified that tonight by claiming two bonus points taking him to 53 overall. Surprisingly, that’s just 8 points shy of Kyle Walker, the top-ranked Fantasy Premier League defender.

With Southampton and Liverpool up next, we can perhaps wait to invest in Karanka’s rearguard. However, from Gameweek 17, the fixtures fall nicely.

Should Friend, now priced at just 4.4, be fit and available at that point, he could prove to be a key acquisition.

In Decline

Robert Snodgrass
A third consecutive Gameweek without returns has seen the Scot fade as a fourth midfield option.

So integral to Hull City’s attacking potential via his dead-ball delivery, Snodgrass has been unable to shine as others around him struggle.

With just a single goal in their last three and with Hull’s fixture list stiffening over the festive spell, Snodgrass is being swallowed up by alternative midfield options in and around his price point.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'm stuck with Heaton/Jaku combo too.. Can't remember now, why I went with Jaku over Pickford on a Wildcard in GW4. I guess by that time Jaku seemed more nailed, I don't know.

I think that Heaton will play this weekend, he was 50/50 last time.

There are too many other matters to resolve, so taking hits for a goalkeeper is not appropriate for me. Even though both my keepers benched.

But if you have a FT, can try to go Heaton--->Pickford, it will free some funds too!

    Heaton - Robinson
    Lovren - Alonso - Pieters - Evans - Holebas
    Sanchez - Hazard - Firmino - Siggy - Allen*
    Costa - Tekkers - Anichebe

Anichebe -> Iheanacho this week and
    Costa -> Kane next week?
    Good moves?

Anichebe played great against Leic and he has Swansea next. Id save. Wouldnt be losing Costa also, looking like a season keeper.

        Yeah, I might just save.
But feels like I have to get Kane in before his nice run of fixtures, but struggling to find a way to, without losing Costa.

              Would this two transfers:

              Allen -> De Roon
              Holebas -> Amat

get you enough to do Benteke -> Kane?

                That would work.
But then I have to play either Anichebe or De Roon every week...
I think I might just go without Kane and make sure I have a good bench over the Christmas period. Thanks.

Not that much worse than having to rotate between Allen and Anichebe. But I think not going for Kane is probably for the best. Invest that money in your 5th mid and 3rd striker.

I wouldn't sacrifice Costa. The most consistent player this season, depends when you got him in as well. I've had Costa most of the season now and would lose a lot of value if I sold him. Costa's fixtures are (sun, pal) in the two weeks Kane has (HUL, BUR).

There after his fixtures are arguably better.

Defoe is a very solid option. In a week of if buts and maybes you can almost bank on Defoe getting at least a goal? However If I had Mane I would captain him.

I captained Defoe last week but not sure i can bring myself to do it again. Other options are Firm, Sanchez and Costa.

It's either Defoe or Sanchez for me. Firmino is in contention , but eh not so sure

For those choosing between Hazard v WBA and Sanchez v STO as captain

West Brom have conceded 7 goals in 7 away games so far this season.

Stoke have conceded 8 but 4 of those came against Palace back in GW5. They've only conceded 2 in 4 since against Watford, Hull, West Ham and Man United.

I was looking at that last night and Stoke are marginally leakier away when it comes to conceding chances.

Grant will need to have a stormer I think.

The key though is that Sanchez's home record overall is not as good as Costa and Hazard's.

I'm not sure which to captain.

My (dodgy) ticker has Stoke as a marginally better defensive option than WBA this week but I'd suggest Sanchez is more central to Arsenal's goal threat than Hazard is to Chelsea's so that isn't a great help 🙂

      Alonso Pieters Cedric (Kingsley Lenihan)
      Haz Alexis Firmino Siggy (Philips)
      Costa Kane Austin
      0.5itb

      A) Kingsley -> Francis
      B) Japu -> Pickford , Kingsley -> Barragan

Too risky IMO, especially with Defoe around and on penalties, good enough having him in your team. Depends on your other captaincy options though.

I captained Defoe last week, normally would be a stroke of genius but given the other results... (Still my third best choice of the season).

Ouch bad luck about the C choice but still something to be proud of. Are you going to captain Defoe again this week?

I could always go Firmino, Sanchez or one of the Chelsea guys (maybe even siggy) but I keep finding reasons why I don't like them as a choice. Maybe I'll just play defensively and captain the top of the poll this week to protect my rank :/
          Cheers! 🙂

Other option was Eriksen (didn't own Sanchez), for some reason he seemed to risky, hindsight ay?

Firmino is a risk given performance against Bournemouth but as a West Ham fan its impossible to get away from the fact that Liverpool could score 7. Siggy is also a good option and slightly less risky, you'd think if Swansea score he'll be involved, Siggy is your differential!

So with the frequency and frankly ridiculous sensitivity of price this year the rash and reactionary managers are being rewarded.

Was waiting to ensure Sanchez didn't get injured midweek but now I'm priced out of the move I had planned. Gone are the days where you can even entertain waiting until Friday night to make a move.

Don't care what anyone says, this game has changed for the worse year on year in the 9 years I've been playing it.

Very good point. Makes the game slightly more interesting though depending on how you look at it.

Means the less casual player can gain team value much easier and take advantage of that towards the back end of the season.

This, absolutely this. The need to adapt to the subtleties of the changing landscape each season is one thing that separates the good managers from the great managers. I'm probably not in either category, incidentally 😉

I agree there is some more price sensitivity this year, but Sanchez scored 23 points this gw! He would've risen quickly in any of the previous years.

He might have risen 0.3 but not so quick but the drops are even more extreme this year.

I agree. I hate the price changes this year. They are so quick that an injured player and a high performing one can both switch 0.3 in a matter of days.

This adds an element to the game which is exciting - in that you have to make rash moves before Champions League games to catch those rises. But patience is no longer rewarded it seems.

I'd like to see the algorithm slow down the price changes and give us managers time to think.

I was talking to some fellow Sky managers last night and the consensus is that we prefer that format this year because it rewards patience. With no price changes we can wait until Friday to make our considered moves.

I don't advocate no price changes at all in FPL. But I do advocate a tweak to slow it down.

With so many high performing players this year I think the price change system has been exposed this year more than others.

Also with those high performing players costing alot you have to make rash moves in order to afford them. Going into the second half of the season with low transfer value will be costly. Last year it didn't matter with the likes of Mahrez. This year price change chasing has almost become a bigger part of the game than actual gathering of points.

That's what I don't like about it that price changes are now too much of a part of the game - rather than what they should be - an aside.

Flipside though - patience has never been a reward. FPL doesnt know the difference between a patient player and a casual one who hasnt logged in all week. That has been part of the problem. In fact, the faster price changes reward the hardcore players like you who monitor the game on a daily basis - they actually lean the game *away* from the casuals and *more* in our favour.

Only as far as value is concerned. The best fpl managers of the past would wait for team news on Friday before making transfers. This allowed them to take advantage of mismatches and any injuries that might have happened during the week. Now due to price rises we are forced to make early moves along with the noobs so we can't use our knowledge to rise above the flotsam as easily.

Sorry I'm late but I highly disagree. Players who pay attention have plans, and plans are completely throw out the window when plays start dropping 0.2 or 0.3 every week. It's impossible to rationally look at a player or their fixtures and make sound decisions (or calculated risks, or whatever) when the market is driven by compounding panic.

Here's an idea - why not limit price changes to Friday night but apply the cumulative price change for the week at that point? E.g. If a player has gone up 200% then they get a 0.2 rise on the Saturday night, etc

Risk equals reward but there seems to be the belief that early transfers are for casuals and doomed to fail. Not so. I've made most of my transfers early because I could see how the game was going. Is that casual? I'd argue it's the opposite. Only once can I remember being burnt by it when I brought in a player that subsequently got injured. So that -4 has been offset by a much greater TV which should gain me much more points long term.
Adapt to the game, dont complain because you're not doing it right 🙂 😉

I like the price rises personally. if my other ML rivals are waiting unti l friday to make their moves and I have paid 0.2 less for the guy than I did I'm happy with that. Its a risk on my part if the player gets injured but want a decent team value going into the 2nd half of the season.

I agree - the rapid price changes reward the impetuous manager, not the meticulous planner.

On a related point, I'm seeing the attraction of draft based games now - I am fed up of planning carefully to get differential players in, only for other players in my league being able to make the move due to a stroke of luck the following week.
Teams in my mini league share so many players that half your team becomes irrelevant.

why is it worse? im sure there will be a week where the players making the early moves will get their fingers burned when their player gets injured mid week. Its all about calculated risks this year. I much prefer this than the slow price rises last season

Adaptaing to the current environment is the number 1 skill in a fantasy football players Arsenal.

I disagree: not only is it much funnier this year but it's also fairer. gives a proper reward to those getting on the right trains early in the season or taking risks to make transfers early in the week. In the end it is about managing your risk vs value. it is not a free ride, people chasing value may lose points along the way when they take hits to repair their team on a Friday evening.
To me, FPL value must quickly reflect the potential of players and make it difficult for latecomers to chase bargains. Last season it was clear by Xmas that Vahrez were worth10m+, yet their value never really caught up with their performance making them a no-brainer acquisition even later in the season.

I think the price changes have been too slow in previous years. Mahrez last year was still a steal in the last half of the season as was deli alli. The year before Harry Kane was massively under priced making it easy for players slow to react to good players have an easier time than they should. Sanchez is the highest scoring player in the game and has only risen 0.6 in 14 gws not a big deal really

I always used to make my transfers on a Friday night/saturday morning. This season I've even been making them before Sunday games are completed because of price volatility.
It adds a different dimension this season and I'm not sure whether it is a bad one.
First time I have ever had to sell a player for a loss in 6 years of playing - Sterling.
Still think the worst part of transfers is not getting better value when selling a player having seen his price increase. If you're good (or lucky) enough to buy a player early and see his value rise substantially yet you only get 50% of that rise when you sell him. With the price volatility this season it's a bit of a double whammy.

It would be way too easy if you got 100% of the profits. You already see teams with TV around 106-107m now and we are only a bit more than 1/3 through the season. Getting 100% of the profits would basically remove the price aspect for a big part of the players halfway through the season.

                Completley disagree.

Much prefer being rewarded for my risks/forward planning. Gives a great opportunity to build TV before the 2nd half of the season where it will really matter. Having a huge TV makes selecting a bench boost WC team incredibly fun too.

Wrong. Means you need to pick bandwagons carefully. Price increases aren't a reward - points are. Like many I jumped on Gundo, and i certainly wasn't rewarded for being rash and reactionary.

I think the speed of change this year has been perfect. Very rarely has anyone sustained the form to justify their gains.

Right decision Hainz Gruber! I always wait until Friday, and you might miss out on some price rices but you gain a lot of points playing like that. This week I was priced out on Hazard and I will have to take my first hit (-4) to get him in.

You say "Gone are the days where you can wait until Friday" as if it is, objectively, a bad thing. All you are advocating is a slower pace, where you could really log in once a week and not put in much thought. Arguably the price rises actually reward those like us who monitor the game daily. Casuals will miss out on players than regulars wont.

I would disagree, the game changes slightly every year and it's a case of reluctantly adapting.
In the case of transfers I think it's added a bit of risk taking. Reactionary managers may seem like they've been rewarded this season and possibly have with some of the bandwagons we've seen but they'll get burnt in the end.
When you miss out on a transfer like Sanchez it is frustrating but that's the playing field for this season.

The reason that prices are moving quicker this year is due to the new FPL Twitter feed I think. They are always posting about price changes etc so more people are conscious of it and making early transfers

I agree with this. The game hasn't changed, managers have. As more managers become aware of proce change dynamics and the tactic of strategy of building team value, so more managers make moves early. At some point - and it appears we have passed it this season - the number of managers involved in early moves will trigger the long-standing price change thresholds earlier and create a snowball effect that forces normally reluctant early gameweek movers to move more quickly too.

As others have said, you have to balance risk versus reward. Eveb though I am building team value, I'm trying to do it thoughtfully. For example, I chose to dump Lukaku rather than Sanchez to fund Hazard a few weeks ago. Even though I hate losing team value at this time of the season and it cost me -4, I sucked up a drop on Sanchez because I believed more in Sanchez than I did in Lukaku long-term. That worked out this time. Some of it is luck, but maybe a bit of it was skill too?

This. Managers are much more aware of price rises than before thanks to twitter and obviously this website. Managers are better.
On a different note, I had a much higher team value in the last 2 years than this year. Is it just me?

Totally disagree. Fast price changes add another dimension to the game. Anything that complicates the game favours the better players. It's a matter of risk management and despite doing worse this season than any other year I think it is the most interesting and enjoyable one yet.

This is actually the first GW that I've made transfers before GW Eve (typically Friday). Maybe i've missed out on a player or two but nothing too damaging to my OR.

This week though Aguero's RC and Hazard/Costa's imminent price rises made Aguero/Allen->Costa/Hazard for a -4 on Saturday a no-brainer for me. Also helps that neither play in midweek.

A couple of years ago they had to tweak the algorythm due to incredibly sensitive price rises (even more so than now actually).

This was due to the increasing number of players. The number playing the game has increased again and they will likely have to tweak it again. In the season following such tweaks the market doesnt fluctuate as much - i remember people moaning about it being much harder to build TV. (i seem to remember huge amounts of managers bringing in Siggy and his value barely shifting, could be wrong, but pretty sure it was him)

Yeah but can he put out a 'strong side' not featuring Sánchez?

No way to know of course, but if he's serious about putting out a strong side, surely Alexis would start.

                the classical Kun-out move:

                Kun+Allen+ Evans/Holebas(which?) to
                Kane + Siggy + Ake(BOU)

                worth a -8(!) hit?

No, and can't you just do Kun + Allen --> Kane + Siggy? Why take another hit for Evans/Holebas --> Ake?

Couldn't strap my knee down last night.

Took an 8 point hit for:

Aguero + Theo + Walker to Costa + Sanchez + Smith

                😀

Yeah I think so. Had to jump on it yesterday to afford it without losing Firmino.

                    Looking at 11 of:

                    Pickford,

                    Alonso, Evans, Smith;

                    Hazard, Sanchez, Siggy, Firmino;

                    Costa, Kane, Austin

Hi Guys, not to sure what to do this week, current squad:

                ---- Foster ----
                Amat - Walker - Pieters
                Gundogen - Hazard - Sanchez - Sig
                Costa - Kane - Austin

                Bench: Grant, Holebas, Evans, De-Roon

                0ft 2.8itB

                A) Holebas to Alonso for - 4 (then sort Gun next week)
                B) Gun to an 6.5 mid for - 4 (then Holebas to Alonso next week)
                C) Gun to an 8.2 mid for - 4 (wont allow me to get Alonso)
                D) do nothing and wait (Will Gun drop again?? currently at 5.4)
                E) Another suggestion...

                Thanks!

Yh feel it between those two. Eriksen rising and Gundogan dropping has annoyed but may wait until next GW to pull the trigger now as it will be for a hit.

Need to check Sons stats. He could enable me to bring in Walker for Lovren too for the two plumb home fixtures after this weekend.

Son's stats are good, he's the cheapest out of the 3 of them and is the second biggest goal threat behind Kane and will likely just about enable you to spend elsewhere, but rotation is a risk. Eriksen has historically been like Ibra, great stats but no end product, I still think Alli will outscore him over the next few weeks.

Firmino is one I would actually stay away from, he looked injured against Bournemouth and did nothing the whole game. Mane and maybe Lallana are better options.

Was forced into early transfers this week. GTG?

                Heaton
                VVD - Alonso - Pieters/Kingsley/Evans
                Sanchez - Siggy - Chadli - Firmino - Hazard
                Kane - Austin

2.4 ITB with 0 FT. Going to bring in Eriksen next week for Chadli. Or is there another Mid fielder under 8.7 I should be looking at?

Hey guys! I have the below team and 1.5mil spare What should I spend it on
I know Anichebe and Can are not world beaters but i can see a price rise on both of them over the next few weeks so call it an investment.
i don't mind taking a few transfer hits as i started a few weeks late so at the bottom of my league anyways xD

                Pickford
                Cedric/Alonso/Rose
                Sanchez/Can/Hazard/Firmino
                Kane/Anichebe/Costa

My subs carrick and 3 fodders players who will never get on.

I was thinking i could drop either anichebe or can to the bench and replace one of my 4.0 defender subs for van djik or find away to replace anichebe with origi whilst he is playing well. i would improve my keeper but for some reason whoever i pick in net always concedes
