Gameweek 14’s record of anti-social behaviour can only begin in one place – the bear pit that was The Etihad.

Sergio Aguero (13.0) kick-started the Man City v Chelsea rumpus by expressing his long-held antipathy towards David Luiz (6.1) through the medium of the airborne two-footed lunge.

That has earned him a winter break all of his own.

Aguero will now miss the next four Gameweeks. In addition to the usual three matches (for what Pep Guardiola downplayed as a ‘strong’ but unintentional challenge), he was handed an extra one-match ban for having previous – his retrospective punishment for elbowing Winston Reid in the Gameweek 3 win over West Ham.

As Aguero will now be unavailable until a New Year’s Eve trip to Liverpool, the ownership exodus is most definitely both strong and intentional among Fantasy Premier League managers.

Over half a million have already ditched the Argentinian, freeing up all the funds they’ll ever need to replace him with in-form forwards and big ticket midfielders for the festive season.

Fernandinho’s (5.4) prolonged disagreement with Cesc Fabregas (6.9) following Aguero’s air show earned him a three-match suspension. He’ll miss a trip to Leicester and then home fixtures with Watford and Arsenal before being available for Gameweek 18’s match at Hull on, appropriately enough, Boxing Day.

The Brazilian is only owned by 1.8% of FPL managers, but his and Aguero’s indiscretions will put increased pressure on Guardiola’s squad just as the season gets insanely busy – and that could have major ramifications for managers owning other City assets.

A yellow card for Nicolas Otamendi (5.9) didn’t grab the headlines in the same way that Fernandinho grabbed Fabregas’ throat, but it meant he falls off the Tightrope and will miss the Leicester match.

That will hardly ease the burden on City’s already thinly stretched defensive resources, and the lengthy absence of key players higher up the pitch further complicates the rotation conundrum Guardiola now faces.

How he legislates for the loss of Aguero will become more apparent in the tactics and personnel he employs at the King Power. But throw in five matches in 20 days from December 14, and investment in his players suddenly looks like risky business.

On a bad weekend for Argentinians, Watford midfielder Roberto Pereyra (6.0) was given a straight red card for a tussle with James McClean (5.0) in the 3-1 loss at The Hawthorns.

He’ll now miss Saturday’s home match with Everton but will be free to return after that encounter after Watford were successful with their appeal to the FA earlier today, reducing his three-match ban to just one match.

Leicester City’s Danny Drinkwater (5.3 and 4.5%-owned) remains unavailable until Gameweek 16 after his retrospective ban, while Hull City’s Dieumerci Mbokani (5.5) won’t be available until the match after that following his straight red for a head-butt in the EFL Cup quarter-final.

Three defenders made their way onto the Tightrope.

Leicester’s 7.6%-owned Christian Fuchs (5.4) picked up his third straight caution, while Swansea’s budget boy Jordi Amat (4.1) conceded five goals and received his fourth booking of the season in the shellacking by Spurs.

Watford’s Miguel Britos (4.4) missed the loss at West Brom after seeing red in Gameweek 13, but he’s straight back on the tightrope courtesy of the four yellows he’d previously picked up.

Our weekly hymn to Diego Costa (10.7) continues to revolve around the feisty Spaniard’s new-found taste for restraint. While Luiz was being disembowelled and Fabregas was carefully checking when exactly he could fall over some advertising hoardings, Diego was already off the pitch having gone eight matches in England without being cautioned.

If he can manage another five clean outings, his card count will be reset as part of the league’s New Year armistice. All four of his bookings this season have been for dissent, which suggests that Costa has finally learned just to walk the walk.

Still snuggling up to Diego on the wire of woe are: Chelsea’s entirely-innocent-at-The-Etihad David Luiz; Aleksandar Kolarov (5.8) ; Jason Puncheon (5.3); Danny Simpson (4.9); Craig Dawson (4.8); Robert Huth (5.0); Jan Vertonghen (5.7); Lynden Gooch (4.4); Ryan Shawcross (4.9); Didier Ndong (4.8); Billy Jones (4.4); Antonio Valencia (5.4), Kyle Naughton (4.5); Dean Marney (4.5); Matthew Lowton (4.5); Steven Pienaar (4.9) and Michail Antonio (6.8).

Back from a stretch in the slammer are Wayne Rooney (8.6), who hit the five-card mark in last week’s EFL Cup tie and so missed Gameweek 14, Valon Behrami (4.5), and Yohan Cabaye (5.6).

The Men In Black

Three referees pointed to the spot over the weekend to up their penalties per game average: Michael Oliver (0.58); Robert Madley (0.45) and a first in the top-flight this year for Jonathan Moss (0.09).

That leaves just three officials still to give a Premier League penalty this season. Craig Pawson is top of that decidedly frugal tree as the other two, Paul Tierney and Stuart Atwell, succumbed to temptation and awarded one in the EFL Cup.

Promoting Pawson’s particularly praiseworthy propensity for penalty paucity further, he’s officiated in nine matches to the duo’s three.

The main beneficiaries of spot-kick awards remain Leicester and Liverpool, with the pair now joined by Spurs on five for the season.

Everton scored their first at the weekend, much to the joy of Jose Mourinho, which leaves Middlesbrough as the only team not to have netted one, or, indeed ,to have even been awarded one.

Crystal Palace are still the only side yet to give away a penalty, but they’ve found any number of other ways to cough up the 26 goals conceded thus far.

Son to share time with Lamela/Sissoko surely?
Tossup between Kane/Ibra, but I went Kane as he isn't the king of big chances missed

      I'd stay away from Son.
Alli is a good option (I own him), Eriksen may have usurped him now as the Spurs midfield option of choice however.
Can you stretch to one of them?

Still don't trust Eriksen tbh, Alli to outscore in the next few.

    Thoughts on captaining Anichebe?

Apparently his stats are good and Swansea are whipable. I'm having a poor season so need to make up ground. I also have Costa, Hazard and Sanchez.

If the others had tough games he might be a possibility. But Haz/Costa up against West Brom and Sanchez against Stoke makes this too risky imo.
(Appologies in advance when they blank and Anichebe gets a hattrick)

Capoue will prob fall, Can going opposite. Allows me to bench Arnie for an almost certain blank.

come on. You can't say that Arnie is almost certainly going to blank. He plays in a very advanced role. Definitely a better bet than Can.

then you get some points from Capoue. You're banking on Can delivering a goal or an assist and Capoue blanking just to even think about breaking even.

Too much surgery needed for Costa so I'm thinking of the Chelsea double d.

    Heaton. Pickford.
    Cahill. Francis. Walker. Pieters. Amat.
    Hazard. Sanchez. Mane. Redmond. Fletcher.
    Defoe. Kane. Austin.

    2.3itb 1ft

    A. Amat to Alonso
    B. Redmond to siggy
    C. Redmond to Alli
    D. Save and roll the free

If you take the view CHS are likely to challenge for the title all season, Costa becomes a necessity I'm afraid. I'd look at an 8 pointer and downgrade Walker plus another just to get him in.

Walcott, Eriksen, KDB and Firmino in my midfield. I think they will all deliver next GW-ks. Maybe is better transfer Capoue - Fer for busy december?

Who wants a Boro Update? Of course you do!

To the lucky few who will have seen Boro last night, you will have been treated to a passing masterclass...evidence that we can adapt our game accordingly to the opposition. The sky is the limit!!

Ok, ok, enough hyperbole but we are good team and as I've predicted many times on here before we will finish mid table and we have some very handy fantasy options now that we've settled in. Rather than doing a a player review based on the game just played I'm going to introduce a BORO LADDER!! Here we go...

    1. Gaston Ramirez - Full of confidence and running games now. Involved in everything we do; and now if he's not taking the set pieces he's heading them in. Depending on the opposition his role is changing, yet he's flourished on both flanks in recent weeks.

    2. Ben Gibson - Future England Captain who has been absolutely impeccable all season, picking up bonus points galore. Now our most expensive defender at £4.8m and represents a steal.

    3. Negredo - This high up the ladder because he's nailed on and is our highest points scorer as things stand. His finishing is erratic but he's doing a great job for us in general - definitely one of the best sub £6.5m strikers going.

    4. Valdes - Outstanding since GW6, nailed on and will get enough clean sheets from this point to make you a happy ff manager. If Liverpool had him they would win the league - maybe.

    5. De Roon - £4.3m and seemingly nailed. Clayton has settled into the league in the holding role which De Roon was earmarked for, which has allowed him to get in the box. I'll be honest, he's not brilliant but he is an enabler.

    6. Forshaw - One of the first names on the teamsheet and a joy to watch this season. At £4.5m he is a good fifth choice midfielder and will get assists. He is more of an assister to the assists, yet at that price should certainly be considered for a fifth choice midfield enabler. De Roon is higher up the ladder on price alone.

    7. Chambers - Outstanding since he came in the team and has formed a formidable partnership with Gibson. Forget John Stones for England, these two can actually defend.

    8. Traore - Would be much higher up the list but will be prone to rotation in the short term. We all know about him so I won't go into it, he's going to be a world star though...mark my words. 0 goals and 0 assists in 5 starts doesn't tell the whole story - four of those starts came against Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City and Leicester away.

    9. Friend - Another that would be higher but for injury. He's hoping to be fit for the Liverpool game in GW16, thats from the horses mouth.

    10. Fabio - Looked great. Reminds me of a mouse the way he scurries about. Friend will come back in once fit, but I wouldn't completely rule out a shift to right back for Fabio.

    11. Clayton - Holding. Will never shoot or assist. If you're looking for a cheap enabler, look to De Roon or Forshaw.

    12. Downing - Prone to rotation now

    13. Stuani - Thanks for dropping him now please stop bringing him on Aitor, thanks.

    14. Fischer - This boy could rise over the Christmas period. A proper footballer that perhaps lacks a bit of pace. I expect him to be a first team regular before the end of the season....Ramirez, Traore, Fischer...now there's a thought.

I don't think anybody cares about anybody else...unless I'm completely mistaken. By all means, ask away!

Oh and by the way, Rhodes isn't in the team becasue he is terrible!!

He is definitely first choice right back. Fabio has done well though and could be reverted to RB once Friend is back. It's a possiblity, however still unlikely at this stage I would say.

Just on Fischer, if there's one thing he doesn't lack it's pace. He's very pacy and skillful, just not consistent, prone to dips in confidence, loses the ball far to much and is dreadful defensively.

Well you could be right about the pace, perhaps I'm just used to watching Traore now, everybody else looks slow in comparison - and he definitely has the skill.

Last night was his first start and people have been questioning it, but there is a clear reason. For the first time in his career, I suspect, he is expected to defend and play for the team in a way that perhaps he wasn't expected to at Ajax; you will know more about that than me. This is something Karanka values extremely highly and has been working on in training with him very hard. I think the Fischer that is dreadful defensively is something that will be very much a thing of the past in the future.

        1. pompeyfan
          • 16 Years

he was definitely expected to defend at Ajax. The fact that he was $hit at it is one of the reasons that he was jettisoned. You can't play 4-3-3 and have 3 of the team not defending.

That's fair enough. I suspect that Ajax rarely ever had sub 40% possession in games though, which is something that will happen to us.

It could be a horses for courses thing though, he was picked last night because Hull were always going to play at the edge of their own box and we were always going to be the one with 60 plus % possession, which proved the case.

Having witnessed the improvement Karanka has made to Ramirez's game in all aspects (his off the ball pressing is now fantastic), I'm hopeful he can do the same with Fischer as from what I can see he looks a real prospect.

Saw the first half last night. Think Clayton was immense though not a fantasy asset and the high press was excellent but then again it was only Hull City. Barragan was slowing down the game a bit too much and he should've switched Fabio with him. With no injuries to key players mid table looks secured. Chambers, Gibson and Valdes looked comfortable enough.

All of this is relative 🙂

The improvement we've made under Karanka in 3 season is astonishing, and the improvement is ongoing.

Depends who you ask. Some say he got us the goals that got us up, others will say his missed chances meant it went to the wire. He's championship quality. Fact of the day: he's yet to score a home goal for Boro

        Valdes
        Barragan Chambers Gibson Fabio

Friend has stated that he is hoping to be fit for GW16 and he will come back in for Fabio at left back. There's a chance Fabio may switch to right back ahead of Barragan.

Gibson should be your first choice, however he's our most expensive defender now

Can't believe there's an OOP mid/striker like Redmond, in a decent team but that is so good at doing absolutely nothing when it comes to attacking points.. Will have to keep him again for now due to other transfers but really not expecting him to ever do anything.

He has been frustrating. Had him at start and sold, then got back after his 9pters. I have been willing to stick it out but patience running thin. I like Phillips as a possible replacement or may punt on Lanzini or Son next week.

Can't decide whether this is good or crazy. Got exact cash (with Fer).
Worried about Mane injury with 3 games in a week and he has to go soon anyway cos of AFCON. Keen to get rid of Walcott and Williams and Ibra to Costa is just an enabler, would prefer Ibra slightly

Williams, Walcott, Mane, Ibra -> Alonso, Sanchez, Fer/Can, Costa -12

    Heaton, Pickford
    Alonso, VVD, Holebas, Evans, Amat
    Sanchez, Hazard, Firmino, Fer/Can, Fletcher
    Costa, Kane, Austin

Have to take a -8 hit this week which is annoying as I don't like taking hits! But transfered out Aguero, fuchs, Bolasie - costa, alonso and I can't decide on my midfielder, toss up between siggy and lalana? Or any other midfielder worth 8.4, haven't got any Liverpool cover but have Kane for spurs and Sanchez for arsenal, leaning towards siggy though?
