Sergio Aguero’s festive suspension dominates transfer decisions this week as our hot topic posters mull over how best to spend the Argentine’s sizeable 13.0 price tag.

Volatile price changes and the emergence of β€˜super-teams’ also come under discussion, while our community writers are once again on hand to run through the best captaincy options, with a little help from club supporters, the fixture list, form guide and the bookies.

Elsewhere, our Members tables look at how attackers adapt when playing home or away.

We finish off with a look at those riding high in our community leagues, whose close eye on the market have helped them assemble prolific squads to send fear through the hearts of their rivals.

The Community Articles

Fantasy Premier League managers have been falling over themselves to draft in Alexis Sanchez after his hattrick against hapless West Ham last weekend.

But while the Chilean has accrued around 320,000 new owners so far this week, it is a player who doesn’t even make the top ten transfers in list that the fixtures, form and bookies recommend as captain this week.Β

YMA’s look at the armband options using this trio of factors has a six out of eight success rate following Harry Kane’s brace in Gameweek 14, making his latest despatch vital reading once again.

At least Sanchez owners can take comfort from Bolivian Seaman‘s latest look at what the fans are saying about the weekend’s games. The Gunner is among a raft of premium picks predicted to do well against obliging opponents in Gameweek 15.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Sergio Aguero’s four-match ban sent shockwaves through the community, as his price continues to plummet while the value of his replacements rocket.

These volatile changes in the FPL market has not pleased everyone, with Hands Guber concerned that price rise chasing has become too much of a focus in the game.Β Meanwhile, Pukka argued that the difficult decisions the market creates make the game more enjoyable. The risk and reward element to making early transfer moves was also discussed later in the week by Burton.

In Aguero’s absence many in the community had expected a template of similar players to emerge.

But as our hot topic on your post-Aguero frontlines and midfields showed, Fantasy teams are set to remain varied, with a raft of differing formations and players mentioned.

This discussion also showed how those with a close eye on the market have been able to assemble so-called β€˜super-teams’: elite squads that could be set to dominate the game over the coming weeks.

Among the cheaper players mentioned in this hot topic was Liverpool midfielder Emre Can, who has scored three times in his last five Gameweeks.Β With such strong form Andy85wsm wondered whether the 4.9 priced German is now a viable fourth midfield option.

Cheap strikers also came under consideration, with Tokyorisingsun issuing a warning regarding West Ham’s Andy Carroll (6.1). While the striker has fixtures on his side, including home ties with Burnley and Hull City in the next four, his woeful injury record makes him arguably a risk too far, according to the community regular.

Sanchez’s strong recent form puts his name firmly in the frame to join your Aguero-less squads. As our Rough with the Smooth round up of Gameweek 14 highlighted, the Chilean is already looking pivotal to success or failure this season.

However, according to Dino, the Gunners midfielder may be set for regression, with a shots to goal rate that is arguably unsustainable in the long term.

There was further rain poured on the Arsenal asset’s parade by the aptly named Dirty Sanchez. His close look at the defencesΒ suggests Sanchez may struggle to deliver his third successive double-digit haul when the Potters drop by the Emirates on Saturday.

For Ktk_interista those banking on Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne (10.8) to shine during Aguero’s absence should also be cautious.

He argues that the Belgian’s recent form and his hefty price tag make him a gamble.

Many in the community agreed with his lukewarm interest in the flame-haired schemer, in our discussion on City assets over the festive period. Although this hot topic did highlight emerging interest in their cut-price striker Kelechi Iheanacho (6.6), who looks set to deputise for Aguero up front for the rest of the month.

Elsewhere, having a strong fifth midfielder came under the spotlight in The Special One’s look at festive rotation, which, as he points out, is set to arrive earlier this year with a midweek programme looming in Gameweek 16 prior to Christmas.

Middlesbrough could prove a happy hunting ground for those looking to invest in a cheap bench player, who can be relied on to step up during December’s hectic schedule. Up the Boro is particularly impressed with his team’s defensive options in his latest report from Teesside.

The Members Tables

Nuedd’s latest tables focus on the marked differences among attacking players when they home and away. This may prove vital reading for those pondering the merits of bringing in Sanchez this Saturday.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

The Fantasy Chili Bowl team competition reaches its fourth round this weekend, and already a handful of teams will already be confident of progressing to the next stage, according to Jarvish’s latest report from the organising committee.

Raul Seleccion is the new leader of Red Lightning’s Top 10k Any Season mini-league. A Sanchez captaincy and use of his Bench Boost chip gave him a Gameweek 14 score of 102 and propelled him to 112th place overall.Β This was also one of the highest scores in the third round of our FFS Cup last weekend, which earned him a Β£10 credit from the competition’s sponsor FanDuel.

InΒ TorresMagicβ€˜s Last Man Standing competition, DelhiDynamoΒ hitΒ the top score in Gameweek 14 with 123. There are now 1505 teams qualified after 134 were eliminated when the safety score was set at 43.

There’s still no change at the summit of the FFS Moderators and Contributors league either, which long time leader Facer continues to dominate.

In my Millionaires Club, for those with a rank below the one million mark, Carlton Dzingirayi is the new leader after notching 110 points in Gameweek 14. He took his sixth hit of the season to bring in Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen and is now 401,963 overall, more than a million places higher than he was in Gameweek 12.

If you are running a community tournament and you would like the latest scores included in future Community Round Ups, please email me a brief summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

I think it need to be a calculated risk. Form, fixtures, locked in a starting position can make easy decisions. Im trying to work out how to shoehorn Sanchez into my team. It will take hits around GW18 but will be worth it.

Yes. It's a challenge ti learn to master the fine art of distingushing between good or bad hits. Often I want to make long term moves when I take a hit. Short term hits seldom pay off. Saying that I'm already thinking of doing Firmino to Son next week, and maybe along with Alonso for a hit...

    I'm vexed again.
All things being equal, which they never are, would you play Philips vs Chelsea or Capoue vs Everton?
I've looked at the stats but they're not of much help since Philips is on form but against a much better defence, whereas Capoue seems to score randomly and so can't be called a form player but is against a much weaker defence.
How would you go about making that decision (Gut feel notwithstanding)?

I'm particularly impressed with the aussies. I was there for 3 weeks and had to check on FPL during awkard times.

Little exercise to work out your true points.

    Total points
    Selling value/100
    AoA = 3
    BB = 20
    TC = 20

    (TP - Chips) x (SV/100)
    806 - 3 = 803 x 1.034 = 830.30

The game has changed a lot over the years. Before you only had 1 WC all season for example. Now the 1st WC has a different value compared to when it was force in January etc. Most will save their 2nd WC near a DGW so it's value is only known at the end when the leaders get swamped by late WCers.

      No, no, no.

The quotient for SV is right up the creek. It is not as simple as x1.034, nothing like.

The chip values are dubious also.

But there you go - I guess it helps to pass the time. πŸ™‚

Serious players still have the 2 big chips so it's more about the teams up to who have used all their chips. You can change the values if you like and not include SV if it's not a factor. It's got a minimum value in the equation really.

Ok, perhaps this would work better once the 1st WC period is finished. Everyone is back to one WC then so the only factor is chips used and selling value then.

Well if you are on 900 points and have used all your chips, you really aren't on 900 points compared to someone on 900 points with all their chips.

          Well...

The TV/SV formula needs to include number of gameweeks left to play if it is to mean anything. The nearer the end of season the less valuable it becomes because there are less weeks for it to work in.

It is actually TV that matters believe it or not. If you bought Costa at 9.5m then you have a 1.2m working gain for as long as you keep him. It only reduces to a 0.6m gain if and when you sell him. And that, in itself, is a potential negative against TV/SV because some managers will keep a player longer than they should simply because they don't want to lose TV, in which case their TV may actually be costing them points rather than helping them. In other words, TV/SV can work against you as well as working for you.

Putting all that into a formula could probably be done if you included enough variables but it would certainly be beyond my capability (and patience).

My estimated value for 0.1 budget is 0.081 points per gameweek if that helps anyone. But that does assume that the manager uses if effectively. Which isn't really an assumption you can rely on.

This is all a roundabout way of saying that any current 'true points' formula would only reflect the decisions you have made in the first third of the season. And that the biggest influence on final points will be the decisions you have yet to make in the second two-thirds of the season. πŸ˜€

Fair enough. Using it after GW19 would make more sense. The teams higher up who have using all their chips aren't really on the score they are if the rest have decent success with their chips. Obviously TV/SV in this factor reduces each gameweek. Good luck to those playing with 100m especially if the big hitters keep up their scoring. Either way it's just an exercise to pass 5 mins πŸ™‚

Yeah, I know it's just a bit of fun. I agree with you about the broad principle. It is quantifying the variables that is almost impossible.

You evidently have 103.4 SV. If you want that quantified I'd say that you have a points potential of 0.081 x 24 x 34 points more than a player with 100.00. That's 66 points between now and the end of the season.

Whether you'll make good enough decisions to realise that potential is another story of course. πŸ™‚

Not sure about the 1.2m gain by keeping Costa, Ruth. Isn't the gain tied up in the player and not actually being used elsewhere? It is techincally a gain if many other fpl players buy Costa at top price and a lot have lately due to Kun's injury as the buyers at 9.5m will have more money to spend elsewhere.
TV/SV is actually a very complex thing in terms of analysing the benefits.

            1. Ruth_NZ

You may be right. I'm not a mathematician.

I guess my point is that you have a 10.7m player in your team. His value to you only becomes 10.1m when you sell.

Of course, all this assumes that players will perform according to their FPL valuations. Which we all know isn't a given.

That's why I'm saying that the decisions you have yet to make outweigh the decisions you have already made (at this stage). An enhanced TV/SV gives you an enhanced points potential IF you can realise it. But (as I said above) that isn't a given, it could even cost you points if you obsess about it and forget that the aim of the game is scoring points, not building and preserving TV.

TV/SV is a means to an outcome. But it doesn't guarantee that outcome. Same is true about the BB chip. There are circumstances where deploying it late could even (in an extreme case) cost you points rather than gaining you any.

Well I think I have got my head around it a bit better.

If you bought Costa at 9.5 and still have him, you have a 1.2m benefit ONLY on the teams that bought Costa at max price. You have 0 benefit on teams that don't own Costa as the profit is tied up in Costa, not re distributed elsewhere. So that's basically how TV works.

SV is relevant just on your own team rather than comparing with others. If you buy Costa at 9.5m, the only way to actually profit within your own team is to sell. So the 0.6m profit can actually be redistributed elsewhere rather than being tied up.

                So really, BOTH matter.

                  Yep.

TV is active potential. SV is underlying potential. I think. Something like that anyway.

But then, say Costa is suspended for one game. The 9.5m buyer benches him, obviously. The 10.5m buyer probably sells him. For that week the 9.5m buyer with higher TV has a lower points potential than his rival because a big chunk of his TV is inaccessible to him.

More to the point, I wish I had kept Costa rather than selling him in GW6 (or whenever it was). But keeping Lukaku instead looked so obvious at the time. πŸ˜€

Hi guys, having a few dillemas about mu WC team.

    How about this

    Foster-Grant
    Cedric-Jones-Chambers-Ake-Amat
    Haz-KDB-Firmino-Sanchez-Siggy
    Kane-6.6 who?- Anichebe

Obviously set up to play 3-5-2. Who should be my second forward? Origi-Wilson-Vokes/Gray?

Or downgrade KDB to de roon, and play 3-4-3 with Kane-Costa-Ihenacho? Really wanna keep kdb though?

I meant in the way of not taking a -12 to fudge Sanchez back into the team on Sunday. At this point his price is already up 0.3 so it's pointless; I wasn't buying him because I wanted him for this fixture, certainly not for hits over who I have. Might have to jump on it this weekend though, cheers.

I wouldn't want to use Capoue as 4th mid,
but I think it is worth it as you've got many big guns

Something is amiss. Post your whole team and how much you can spend on your Coutinho replacement, if you want a proper answer.

i.e. If you're holding onto Aguero, don't. Out for a hit and you can possibly afford KDB or Sanchez.

I dont hold out much hope for Bournemouth away from home i dont think any of these players have a chance really
Amat maybe if you are not going to give him a chance against Sunderland then when will you?
I just can not trust him myself i might make a transfer so i can bench him

Feeling remarkably good about my team this week:

    Pickford
    Cedric - Holebas - Williams
    Hazard - San(c)hez - Siggy - Firmino
    Benteke - Costa - Ibra

Having 6 realistic captaincy options is quite insane.

Looking good...think the captain pick will define this GW...loads of options.

Very nice, exact same midfield here too πŸ™‚

Has to be Sanchez for the armband, surely.

I didn't pay 11.4 for him to not captain him. FFS poll, Triggerlips poll, bookies, he's ahead all over the place.

Take a look at Stoke's games and they haven't faced a free scoring team like Arsenal in awhile.

Trouble sleeping mate? No standout option for me this gw. I think Sanchez and Arsenal have been lucky of late and now they may flatter to deceiver. Stoke no walk in the park atm.

Haha I'm on holiday in Asia (Hong Kong) seeing my family so it's midday here πŸ˜‰

Ugh I have a nagging feeling you're right, I just don't think I'm brave enough to go Hazard, could potentially lose out big time and I'm already trying to turn around lots of poor form haha

Aah that sounds nice! Beautiful country, Hong Kong?

Yeah but I think it is better to choose cap based on your own thinking, not out of fear of turning away from the herd πŸ˜‰

Hah yeah, it's more just a big metropolis kind of thing. Off to Shanghai then Singapore next, back to London for Xmas though.

Well I think Sanchez will smash it. Stoke have never won vs. us at the Emirates, and I think we're showing signs of being able to cut through teams. Hazard I also considered, but I hear that wba are their bogie team. The good thing is, as I'm in Asia, I should hopefully be asleep during the games and not stressing about what's happening lol... But I'm very jetlagged so no doubt I'll be awake πŸ˜‰

Hm well now you make me think too. Will Sanchez get a third consecutive double digit haul then? Something magical about that number 3.

Yes but this is a new Chelsea team. They play with pace and bring forward a lot of men into the opp box. Pacey players like Hazard and Pedro will cause them problems. And Mike Dean is the referee!!

This sounds to me as a good week for all big hitters

Ha mate you're the guy who's smashing it this season, I've been very wrong on so many occasions this year, both playing cautiously and also in any risks I've taken πŸ™

I think you're right, it'll def be a week for the big hitters to maybe pull off a big performance. At least I hope so haha. By that logic, you'll be fine armbanding one of the Chelsea boys I'm sure
