It was always going to be a big ask.

With 37 points in his previous two Gameweeks, Alexis Sanchez had constructed a culture of fear amongst his non-owners, urging more than 380,000 to doubtless spend transfer points to move swiftly and capture his services.

Such explosive returns built expectation and paranoia in equal measure. It was a risk to overlook Sanchez and, having been burned by sacrificing his services after Gameweek 11, I was not in the frame of mind to gamble again.

I was not alone.

Sanchez topped our captain poll and was duly skippered by 17.3% of managers today – just 11,000 shy of Chelsea’s Diego Costa who proved the most popular pick of Gameweek 15.

Of course, we could have perhaps anticipated a significant regression in his output.

Stoke City arrived in north London having conceded just three goals in their previous seven Premier League outings. The underlying statistics backed them to frustrate the Gunners and perhaps stifle the threat of Sanchez.

To an extent they succeeded, although eventually the Potters caved in to goals from Arsenal’s other midfield threats – Mesut Ozil and Theo Walcott.

That offered a reminder of Arsenal’s attacking promise and that, while Sanchez clearly has to be considered as the key force, neither Ozil nor Walcott can be totally overlooked.

The latter, in particular, continues to produce numbers that outperform his initial 7.5 price tag, or even his current 8.0 valuation.

Walcott still boasts more shots in the box and shots on target than Sanchez. We may suffer the frustration of rotation on occasions, but, barring Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson, it’s difficult to find a midfielder in his bracket that can compete with the potential suggested by such numbers.

Sanchez is convincing, but we shouldn’t be blinkered to the promise elsewhere in Arsene Wenger’s midfield.

Appearing dejected when withdrawn by Wenger – Sanchez is currently showing real hunger and ambition in his play. For now, we will take the assist for Alex Iwobi’s third goal and look to Wednesday night’s visit to Goodison for a bigger return.

Tomorrow, the aforementioned Costa, along with Eden Hazard, backed by 17.5% and 9.4% with the armband respectively, will attempt to deal damage to the stubborn West Brom defence.

Significantly outscore Sanchez and it will create further doubt on the Gameweek 16 armband, with Chelsea at Sunderland and Spurs and Harry Kane welcoming Hull City to White Hart Lane.

Sanchez is just one key player embroiled in a fascinating phase of our season. The merry-go-round of in-form heavy-hitters took a major twist with the Sanchez Gameweek 14 haul.

Overlook him as our captain or, worse still, in our squads, and we will always live in fear of a repeat. Today’s modest return doesn’t change that: Sanchez can explode points at any time, perhaps against any opposition.

But it remains to be seen if the confidence in the Chilean as a captain remains strong should his big rivals deliver on Sunday.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Best team I've seen. Just save for now. Whoever looks worse out of Can and Phillips tomorrow, drop for DeRoon, leaves you within range of Bellerin gw18, for free. Or other option is just keep the good 5th mid for Xmas, and forget Bellerin and use the cash for Valencia now.

He's right. Doesn't like defenders either. Only midfielders.

See his comments about City failing to put in a single tackle for more than 30 minutes? "I don't coach tackling".

It's based on his team selections over 6 seasons and on his own words actually. Sorry if that's not good enough for you.

Yes, because he prefers playing with 11 midfielders it must mean he hates strikers & they perform worse with him. I understand you're trying to paint this false narrative about Guardiola & haven't stopped since the summer for whatever reason. But I'd suggest actually watching the matches he's coached in his past 6 season to get a grasp of juego de posición concepts, etc. There are tons of articles out there done by anslsysts for clubs, UEFA A coaches & their ilk that are much more meaningful than some nitpicked quotes.

To no avail, then ones who watched a lot of Bayern or Barca over the years will give you a completely different conclusion than this non-sensical idea you keep regurgitating that Pep is bad for strikes because he asks them to press & be more complete players.

I understand it fits your narrative, but sadly it's dumbfounded & there is zero tactical analysis to back that. Maybe you should read this for starters,

                  http://spielverlagerung.com/2016/08/05/guardiolas-tactical-challenges-at-manchester-city/

Really? I travel to Munich a fair bit. I have a number of friends and colleagues that are Bayern season-ticket holders and therefore watched them very often.

Not a one of them were impressed by Guardiola. Most thought he just made an exciting team - that had just won the league, cup and CL treble - boring.

I am very glad he's at City rather than my club.

Inherited Messi, Zavi, Iniesta, Busquets - a once-in-a-generation midfield just coming into their prime - and has lived on the reputation for 6 years. Now he actually has to (slightly) rebuild a team we'll see the truth.

And the truth is that he's not much better than his disciple AVB.

It does, but we've already seen what an early on Man City can do when they're on their game, press with high intensity, circulate the ball quickly, & actually finish their chances. Which goes completely against this false notion that Man City aren't 'free-scoring' or attacking enough.

That Chelsea match could've easily been three goals to City, just unlucky for KDB & Agüero not to finish those huge chances they'd usually convert. I don't think any sort of analysis would led to the conclusion of them being attacking enough either. That goes for most of their matches & they certainly didn't beat Gladbach 4-0 & Barca 3- by not being 'free-scoring' or being victims of juego de posicion which is apparently not attack-minded enough.

                          Tiki-taka gobbldegook.

When you don't have a team that is streets ahead of the opposition you need to be able to defend.

This is Pep's first time with such a team. And he doesn't have a clue.

The bizarre thing is that his reputation is so overblown that the City owners will doubtless buy the "it's the players, not me" argument and just give him hundreds of millions more to spend.

You obviously know about football. But this is the Premier League. You won't get sunshine and free rolling grass every day. One must adapt. Like Mourinho used to do in Chelsea's early years (with the right players BTW). It's obvious Pep's intentions for City's team, but it will be harder and take longer than most pundits made it to believe. That's just my honest opinion.

Fair points, though the PL is just as physical as the Bundesliga which is home of the the best counter/pressing club sides in football. Of course it's a different style to England as all leagues are different, but the Bundesliga is as close it gets IMO. I think Guardiola himself said during that early run that he'll go on a run of losses soon & would have to adapt like every coach in every league does.

He's at Man City for three years, playing a system that doesn't accommodate for the lack of a proper deep-lying playmaker, good FB's or a better CB. I'm sure they'll only improve & cant do much worse after that showing vs Spurs & Leicester. But yeah, not doing any favors having old or poor players like Zabaleta, Fernando & Otamendi playing this system as they're clearly not suited to a high-tempo, high-pressing side like this. Exposed way too easily & the flaws are obvious. I agree though, he also struggled early on at Barca & Bayern, & it wasn't until his second season at Bayern where we saw more typical positional play traits out in the open & working efficiently. Not to mention some signings.

Fair points to you also. Maybe we wouldn't being having this discussion if it wasn't for this week's result. I partially agree on the Bundesliga analogy and credit positional game flow to Pep but his mission was clearly easier with the resources on his former sides. I guess I'm not a fan and have a bit of bias. But I think we all agree than even when fully implemented this type of style won't cut it for the honours. I maybe wrong. In the meantime I'm wishing for an Origi brace tomorrow. 😉

To be fair, you are using a sample size of one game to called him a failed punt. While the role has obviously changed as Pep does things very different, he could still do very well Pep like he did when Kun was out earlier.

Missed the game but from all reports he was very poor so yes I do agree his starting spot is in trouble now. I just think Pep trusts him a bit more than you may think.
Anyway, in terms of fpl, the lack of replacements in fpl make it very hard to sell already,

Very strange philosophy he has. So unpredictable with his starting lineups that all our speculation may be pointless - all we can be sure of he is constantly full of surprises.

The no city policy you have in fpl is looking very good.

Too much is being made of City's bad form I think. They were that close to wiping the floor with the league's premier immovable object in Chelsea. Think, right now, teams are just getting at their defense which lacks confidence and Pep is not helping with his weekly rotation of defenders. If he gets that sorted out, he already has an attack that will put a few past teams. The 4-0 thrashing of West Brom is the perfect example of what damage City can do if they shut up shop.

Transferring out Nacho depends entirely on whom you're bringing in. Not the greatest set of fixtures for the budget strikers in the coming game week.

City are in a bit of disarray at the minute as Pep wrestles with the squad and how he wants to play. It looks like Pep isn't willing to adapt and is hoping that things click sooner or later. Who knows it may be worth it in the long run. In my opinion, he needs to protect his defence a bit more and work on that with the team. In terms of who plays upfront, I don't really see an issue with utilising midfielders if Aguero is out.

Can we talk about the Arsenal defence?

Have had Koscielny the whole season and been THOROUGHLY disappointed. Six solitary goals conceded in a row. The fixtures are amazing but I have a good feeling they are always gunna concede that one goal, especially with Mustafi now out for an estimated three weeks.

Is he worth keeping? Have Alonso, looking to bring in maybe Walker or Cedric. It would be a no brainer if I had a few more dollars in the bank to do Firmino + Kos -> Sanchez + Cedric, but I can't.

I suppose I should just hold him, seeing as I picked Kos up at 6.0. It's funny how he's up to 6.6 with an average of less than 2 ppg over the last 6. They weren't exactly spectacular before that either.

To answer your comment below about United; I'm really hoping Mkitaryan can cement a place there, he could be one of the best players in the league if the adjustment goes well. Already have Ibra so I'm looking forward to that. Maybe a defender on the radar but their back 4 has been rife with changes and crap talk from Mou.

Best thing by getting a Spurs attacker over United is the money saved sets you up for that extra Arsenal player in gw18. Palace away and then Sun home in gw18 could genuinely be Ibra hatrick opportunities though. Maybe Kane to Ibra in gw18 could be good.

Either that or swap 5th mid for cheap bench fodder depending on future plans.

                            Hey Bojack

Think you're alright, you'll probably need a "premium" def at some point (maybe an arsenal from gw18) but it's solid otherwise. Leave for midweek I'd say.

So just watching MOTD and obviously they focused on him but Zaha is 5.5 and Mr Consistent and averages over 5pts a game, are we missing a trick? Shame about his fixtures mind.

The Leicester match kicked off after y bedtime (Korea GMT+9) so didn't watch. Why was Nacho taken off after 58 mins? Injury or strategy? I didn't really fancy him this week, but got in early before the price rises before a home tie to watford.

I believe he tryed direct football and deploy more physique in the box. Yaya was almost playing CF.
Nacho wasn't playing bad he simply wasn't suited for this game on the circumstances at the moment. Heavy rain, losing 2-0 and not holding the ball upfront.

Disclaimer: by no means a pep fan

I am pretty well decided on a plan for this lot, but would like opinions. Will take hits, I am looking at 9 red arrows in a row and out of top 100k unless Firmino kills it with the armband.

Defense is good. Maybe look at moving Coleman and Jakupovic on.
You need to downgrade on of KDB, Firmino or Walcott and shoehorn Kane or Ibra in I think.

I don't think there will be much between Alli and Eriksen. Alli means I should be able to afford Bellerin. Eriksen means I probably can't.

I wouldn't ditch Coleman for another hit if you can field a team. Trades look good though even though putting some pressure on double spurs. They do have nice fixtures.

Thanks I would probably need a WC to get both or a lot of hits. Defintely getting Kane.

What would u likely do next here..
I know there are important games later but I want to have some ideas.
Won't have much time between the games finishing and any price rises tomm due to time zones and work etc.

                              Pedro- Eriksen is an option.
Changing Nacho too already although he does have a nice fixture.
                              Anything else..?

                              Heaton.
                              Lovren, Walker, Cedric.
                              Pedro, Sanchez, Firmino, Siggy.
                              Costa, Kane, Nacho.
                              Pickford, Holebas, Amat, Whelan.

                              1ft, 1.2m in account.

Pedro and Eriksen both have great fixtures and I would give Nacho more than a week as a punt. Maybe hold and use cash on defence. Get Arsenal defender from GW 18 or even now for Lovern.

                                  Thanks a lot.
I will need to check Pedro's starting status though. If he keeps on starting and getting in on the action then I may keep.
                                  Eriksen is on fire tho..

Hopefully Pedro is given a few more chances to start at least.
He deserves it I think...but I am not Conte.

                                  Will consider the Arsenal defenders.

In Nachos first league start of the season away to United where he got a goal and assists, why was he replaced after 52 mins?

Nice, I think Pep actually does trust him a fair bit, while from all reports his performance was poor, it could have been Peps plan from the start to hook him as it was his first start in a long time and there is of course short rests in between matches now. As an owner, makes alot of sense to keep for Watford particularly due to the lack of replacements.

Thinking about saving trade to have more options for after midweek games. Or is there something obvious I need to get done?

I would go Snod to Erik or Alli. You have exact cash for Eriksen option I think.
Agree on Sanchez but can't see an easy way to get him in.
McAuley and even Defoe fixtures not looking great.

Firmino + Redmond --> Sanchez + De Roon
                                (-4)
                                yes?

Would like to hop on this Sanchez train before it gets out of control; have exact change ITB. Initially I was looking at the next two fixtures as less than ideal but after putting 3 in Stoke, and Everton and City getting put to the sword, I quite fancy the chance of a few Sanchez goals.

Unfortunately no (in my mind). Currently have:

                                    Hazard - Siggy - Firmino - Redmond - Allen
                                    Kane - Ibra - Defoe

Could lose Defoe instead of Redmond, but one has been good to me and the other hasn't, plus the 4.3 De Roon option is friendlier than a 4.7 Anichebe, albeit at a lower output. But Firmino is the only premium one who could make way.

Looking at that front 8 I would agree. If you want Sanchez that's what it has to be it seems. But note DeRoon and Allen don't rotate very well and fixtures not good for either.

Cheers! Honestly I was contemplating just winging it with Allen every week. Everyone has been talking about Stoke fixtures turning poor, but they have about 50/50 good and not so good. If he snagged an assist against Arsenal maybe he's fixture-proof 😉 a man can dream.

Save probably, but I agree I don't like Anichebe when you already have Fletcher. One or the other has to go. Better cheap options in mid 😉

Why? The sensible thing is to upgrade the defence using the 1.9m and have a hybrid 4-4-2 structure.

I wouldn't disagree with that, given this man's team. But I'm sure most people would agree money is typically better spent in attacking players, and it's easier to find a 4.5 defender who scores well compared to a Fletcher. So if 4.5 defenders are better than 4.5 mids/forwards, and 5.5 mids are better than 5.5 defenders, why wouldn't you distribute the money in a way to get the best of both worlds.
