It was always going to be a big ask.

With 37 points in his previous two Gameweeks, Alexis Sanchez had constructed a culture of fear amongst his non-owners, urging more than 380,000 to doubtless spend transfer points to move swiftly and capture his services.

Such explosive returns built expectation and paranoia in equal measure. It was a risk to overlook Sanchez and, having been burned by sacrificing his services after Gameweek 11, I was not in the frame of mind to gamble again.

I was not alone.

Sanchez topped our captain poll and was duly skippered by 17.3% of managers today – just 11,000 shy of Chelsea’s Diego Costa who proved the most popular pick of Gameweek 15.

Of course, we could have perhaps anticipated a significant regression in his output.

Stoke City arrived in north London having conceded just three goals in their previous seven Premier League outings. The underlying statistics backed them to frustrate the Gunners and perhaps stifle the threat of Sanchez.

To an extent they succeeded, although eventually the Potters caved in to goals from Arsenal’s other midfield threats – Mesut Ozil and Theo Walcott.

That offered a reminder of Arsenal’s attacking promise and that, while Sanchez clearly has to be considered as the key force, neither Ozil nor Walcott can be totally overlooked.

The latter, in particular, continues to produce numbers that outperform his initial 7.5 price tag, or even his current 8.0 valuation.

Walcott still boasts more shots in the box and shots on target than Sanchez. We may suffer the frustration of rotation on occasions, but, barring Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson, it’s difficult to find a midfielder in his bracket that can compete with the potential suggested by such numbers.

Sanchez is convincing, but we shouldn’t be blinkered to the promise elsewhere in Arsene Wenger’s midfield.

Appearing dejected when withdrawn by Wenger – Sanchez is currently showing real hunger and ambition in his play. For now, we will take the assist for Alex Iwobi’s third goal and look to Wednesday night’s visit to Goodison for a bigger return.

Tomorrow, the aforementioned Costa, along with Eden Hazard, backed by 17.5% and 9.4% with the armband respectively, will attempt to deal damage to the stubborn West Brom defence.

Significantly outscore Sanchez and it will create further doubt on the Gameweek 16 armband, with Chelsea at Sunderland and Spurs and Harry Kane welcoming Hull City to White Hart Lane.

Sanchez is just one key player embroiled in a fascinating phase of our season. The merry-go-round of in-form heavy-hitters took a major twist with the Sanchez Gameweek 14 haul.

Overlook him as our captain or, worse still, in our squads, and we will always live in fear of a repeat. Today’s modest return doesn’t change that: Sanchez can explode points at any time, perhaps against any opposition.

But it remains to be seen if the confidence in the Chilean as a captain remains strong should his big rivals deliver on Sunday.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Heaton / Foster
    Alonso / Clyne / Cedric / McAauley / Amat
    Sanchez / Hazard / Sigurdsson / Can / Fletcher
    Kane / Costa / Defoe

Thinking about Clyne > Walker this week. Too expensive, or fine for now?

Been looking at Valencia, but still need convincing by United.

Not looking to upgrade Can just yet as he's a recent transfer. Really want Zaha, but can't bring myself to do it with the hard fixtures & AFCON. Will likely get a better Liverpool mid soon, but probably in for Siggy after his good games.

I have Can, but wouldn't downgrade him from Firmino. I'd be vary of bringing in Benteke as Palace's next few fixtures are difficult (and Zaha, a main provider, leaves for AFCON soon).

Definitely Alonso in. If you want Spurs, you could go Walker or Vertongen. Both cheaper (although Walker could be rotated with Trippier over Christmas).

Without making a transfer this week my team would be on 33, currently on 40 (-8).

    Hit summary:
Aguero to Kane vs McAuley points pending.
    Allen to Sigurdsson ( 3 )
Austin to Iheanacho ( 4 ) vs Pieters.

So if Kane outscores McAuley by more than 1pt, then my hits been covered collectively (?) and the team looks in good shape for next few GWs.

Is that an acceptable view on the hits taken?

    Kane - Costa - Benteke

    How about in long term?

    Out: De Roon, Walcott, Benteke
    In: Sigursson, Firmino, Anichebe

So in practically it would be Walcott & Benteke versus Firmino and Siggy because De Roon or Anichebe would be on the bench.

      Just Walcott to Sigg?
Even Walcott is worth keeping though

Woukdn't sacrifice Tekkers for Firmino...not in a million years. Walcott to Siggy might be worth it though (do you have Sanchez?)

Was Gabriel injured when Holding started games at the start of the season?

Those with Fuchs and/or Austin, who are you looking to get in? They both clearly need to go.

I have 1FT. 0.1ITB but can't see any forwards or defenders that I want!

    Team is:

    Heaton. Pick.
    Walker. VVD. Fuchs*. Holebas. Amat.
Sanchez. Hazard. Siggy. Pedro. de Roon.
    Kane. Costa. Austin*

    Cheers all!

Anichebe, Llorente... not many decent options at that range

Thanks. Yeah thinking one of those two but it's tricky as they're both so risky. Today's games will hopefully offer some answers

      Fuchs > Alonso
Austin > Anichebe (as an enabler).

      Worth a shout perhaps?

Oh you have Pedro. I see the issue. Maybe just Anichebe in and sort the lack of Alonso out soon?

Alli or Eriksen? I have no other Spurs players.

I would be tempted with Alli. Seems more consistent

      Alli is more consistent

leaning towards alli - have a feeling that whichever one you choose will be the wrong one

      alli is cheaper as well

That seems pretty overwhelming in favour of Alli. He always seems to be in the box on the end of chances... but he always seems to miss them...

i think origi is a better team player and run the channels unlike sturridge

hence klopp could favor origi .

Did Hughes say anything about Pieters after the game? Looked to be struggling a bit after the knock he took but stayed on the whole game.

    Walcott dropped.

    What.A.Joke.

He was at -100 Friday night and didn't drop. And then last night he was at -96 with positive NT per hour and he dropped.

    Sigh.

Is Llorente worth a punt to replace Austin?

    Is he nailed?

Should be nailed but two tough away games up next and Bradley could play safe and put Siggy back to false 9. Hope he doesn't though as they look so much better with him in the team.
