This article aims to help Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Managers in their choice for the best captaincy option for the forthcoming Gameweek by combining form and fixtures.

It will now aim to help FPL Managers in their choice for the best defensive assets to pick for the forthcoming gameweek by combining form, fixtures and clean sheet odds.

In Gameweek 16, the model’s top pick, Harry Kane, frustratingly failed to deliver attacking returns in what was a convincing 3-0 win over Hull. This means that this strategy now has a six out of nine success rate. (Success is derived from whether the model’s top pick delivers attacking returns or not. However, this will be reviewed, to see whether a new method of success can be found. Any suggestions are most appreciated).

The clean sheet analysis did have much better success, including the aforementioned fixture vs. Hull. Tottenham, Chelsea and Stoke all featured inside the top 5 most likely to keep a clean sheet according to the clean sheet method.

Before I take a look at Gameweek 17’s best captaincy targets, let’s have a quick recap on how I use form and fixtures to come to achieve this.

REFINING THE METHOD

The captaincy section will now focus completely on the form and fixtures elements and remove the odds section altogether.

For this method, I am going to take the 10 most popular captaincy options (at time of writing), according to the FFScout captaincy poll and rank them 1-10 ranking according to the difficulty of the fixture, which is worked out using goals conceded, big chances conceded and goal attempts in the box conceded from the last four games.

I then apply the same ranking to form, looking at points per game, goals and assists over the last four games. This article will now factor in the players PPG from their last 2 home and last 2 away games respectively, higher weighting will be given according to the player’s fixture. E.g. if a player is playing in an away fixture, their away PPG will be taken into account, if 2 players PPG’s are still the same, then the players total PPG will be taken into account.

The article will now include the ‘clean sheet potential’ table, which is worked out with the form and fixtures elements from the captaincy section and then combined with clean sheet odds to give a total ranking based on clean sheet potential. This section will include the top 10 teams.

With all that in mind, let’s take at Gameweek 17’s results.

Conclusion

Taking form and fixtures into account, Christian Eriksen is the most likely to deliver attacking returns, according to this method. The Dane faces a Burnley side who have improved slightly in the fixture table recently, their numbers of big chances conceded and goal attempts in the box conceded have gone down slightly. Having said this, the Spurs attacking midfielders’ home form catapults him to the top of the results table with a record 18.5 PPG.

Diego Costa sits second in the results table this week, largely down to an impressive fixture against a porous Crystal Palace side who have conceded nine times in the last four  Gameweeks. Their big chances conceded and goal attempts in the box conceded remains consistently high, couple all this with the Chelsea man’s consistency to score points in any given Gameweek, FPL managers may feel safer with the armband on the Spaniard

The differential captain this week comes in the frame of Dimitri Payet, despite a low score on the form table, this has shown signs of improvement, certainly in very recent games and his all round involvement seems to be improving along with it. The Frenchman sits third in the fixture table with a plum home-tie against Hull City, who have the biggest chances conceded (10) and second highest goal attempts in the box conceded (38) out of any side on the table.

Thanks again. If Dembele is out again I think I'll go Costa or Sanchez.

    No Eriksen currently.

Jonty, do you have any plan to get Eriksen in? He really killed me this week as all my rivals had him/captained him.

I would have to downgrade Kane in order to upgrade Can which seems a bit sideways to me.

Cheers again for these. Any thoughts about giving the rankings a weighting based on how strong the player is in a particular category? If a player has 20 PPG and second best is 6 PPG, just wondering if there is a way to weight just how dominant player A is compared to the rest.

Keep them coming though, always a good read.

Hey TM245, I do want to do something like this but just not exactly sure what would work exactly. I was thinking of something like: the top 3 in the list get further analysis or something like that, thoughts?

YMA, Interesting idea to go deeper into the numbers with the top picks. I took a stab at trying to assign weight to the past performances here:
        http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2016/11/15/in-search-of-the-best-captaincy-indicators/
but I am not sure how accurate that is.

One example to take a look at in this week's article is the Form category:
        Eriksen 18.5
        Sanchez 15
        Ibra 9
        Kane 7.5

When rating them, would it be more accurate to give Eriksen and Sanchez extra weight for how far ahead they are? It seems like another level of strength as far as their form goes, and even Ibra is more impressive than the players ranked 4-7 on the list.

That article is awesome btw! I agree there should be higher weighting it's just how to do it. I'd like to keep this article simplified as possible so something like 2 points between each ranking. So instead of last place being given 10, they get 20 instead. It would highlight the gap in between each option as currently the difference between 3rd and 7th say is very little. I like the explosiveness part, say if home PPG is over a certain amount it gets 1.5 times rsting. I dunno I'm waffling now haha

Thanks for the reply -- it was a labor of love, but definitely a labor.

I think the simplicity you mention is the key here, since it does what it sets out to do: it identifies the people with the leading indicators.

One way to figure out the best weighting would be to look back at which indicators are currently doing a good job of predicting. Small sample size of just your articles, but at least it is a start:

-- if home PPG is a really strong indicator of success, then giving it extra weight makes sense.
-- if the fixtures totals above a certain number have been strong indicator, etc.

I was dead set on captaining Costa before reading this. Eriksen would be a great differential in my mini league as I'm the only one who has him. Would captaining him just be chasing last week's points though? I'm likely to stick with Diego but if anybody has any thoughts, I'd like to hear them.

I have Eriksen. I've owned him multiple times over the last couple of seasons too. The man is frustratingly inconsistent. Like a low key Lukaku, for captaincy, if you will.
So Kane or Costa for me.

Depends on your reasons for captaining Costa. If they're based on another system that you believe is better that this one, go for it. If it's more of a "gut" thing, I'd go Eriksen.

Thanks again for taking the time to put this together. Even though the last two weeks (Firmino when I didn't have Mané and Kane) haven't worked out, I'm slapping the armband on Eriksen and looking forward to a haul a la Sanchez.

I enjoy tracking how you fare with this. I think Eriksen has slipped through the cracks of the system here. Considering him and Kane are facing the same team, his form gets him to top but Kane's role and finishing should mean he is more likely than eriksen. Not really something you can factor in the model though

Hi, I too follow these articles closely.
Did the gw16 analysis get posted up as I didn't see it (I picked Kane anyway and of course failed)?
Why did the "odds" but get dropped? Perhaps I missed the explanation earlier.

Hi, sorry, couldn't reply immediately. I always considered the odds section as quite a good input. End of the day, the bookies have many many brains working on these algorithms so perhaps they are a strong addition to the indicator. Will be interesting to compare results before and after dropping the bookies odds into the equation?
            Cheers

Well the odds generally consider form and fixtures. As YMA was including odds with form and fixtures seperately, it was almost like adding it twice hence it doesn't really serve a purpose. Good move imo.

Fair enough. I hadn't looked at it that way. I just assumed they looked at form+fixtures but also other "special" bookies secret factors

The only other factors bookies really consider are weight of money being bet (once the market is open) or predicted to be bet (before the market is open). This is because a closed book (guaranteed profit margin) is always preferred, even if the odds diverge from the real odds. Hence bookie odds aren't really reflective of what the bookies "think" will happen, not even what punters "think" will happen as bettors are more likely to bet with bias than playing just the odds.

I've seen this view on a few different forums, and while it contains traces of truth, is very wrong. Consider it being as true and simple as you say: then it would be very easy for a contrary punter to consistently make money. It isn't! Certainly not in an efficient market like the pl anyway

Thanks. This is really interesting. Does the weight of money factor mean that the odds are worse (from the punters' point of view) for players from heavily supported teams like Man U and Liverpool?

I've just decided to captain Payet. Mainly because I got him in instead of Eriksen last week and it still hurts. I wonder though whether this is just increasing the stake (choosing a risky but potentially high return) captain after a big loss. The discredited D'Alembert system apparently.

Im torn between choosing spurs or west ham assests as my captain pick this GW. Im 100 points behind the leader currently and we both have kane and Eriksen, though I have Payet and Carroll. We both captained Erik last GW and paid off handsomely and he plans on doing Kane this GW but I am never making up 100 points captaining same players as him. What to do? Loooong way to go 100 points can be made easily. I've seen a 150 point lead evaporate with less weeks left. One season I remember I went chasing too soon and regretted, for now go for the best option, don't force differentials yet when you think overall someone else is the better pick.
