Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen are the cause of much frustration as Spurs’ full-backs bring in the points in a comeback win over Burnley. Theo Walcott nets as Arsenal lose to a Kevin De Bruyne-inspired Manchester City, while Jay Rodriguez scores twice as Southampton put three past Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium. Here’s the Stock Check following Sunday’s events…

On The Rise

Theo Walcott
Again, the right winger was named in Arsene Wenger’s starting XI and, on this occasion, required just five minutes to get amongst the goals at Man City.

Walcott’s eighth strike of the season – a third goal in five – coincides with a superb schedule that sees the Gunners handed four home fixtures (WBA, CPL, BUR, WAT) in addition to trips to Bournemouth and Swansea in the next six Gameweeks.

While Alexis Sanchez’ assist served a reminder just why he’s the star turn for Arsenal in the final third, Walcott – having dropped down to 7.8 and sitting in just 14% of FPL squads – looks an ideal double-up option alongside his premium-priced team-mate for our five-man midfields.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s injury which saw him withdrawn having been introduced from the bench may also ease short-term rotation concerns.

Danny Rose and Kyle Walker
After producing an assist apiece at home to Hull on Wednesday, the Spurs pair both served up attacking points for the second successive Gameweek.

With Toby Alderweireld missing out with a back problem, Mauricio Pochettino resisted the urge to rotate his full-backs at home to Burnley, with a switch from 3-4-2-1 back to 4-2-3-1 failing to diminish Rose and Walker’s points potential.

Rose grabbed the winner in a 2-1 comeback victory over the Clarets and has now averaged 5.1 points per match to Walker’s 4.6. The latter remains the most popular defender in FP, with 38% ownership, yet his 6% owned team-mate is proving more than a match as a deadly differential.

Rose was subbed off with a knock to his thigh, however, forcing would-be suitors to hold fire with any transfers until Pochettino rolls out his pre-match press conference at the end of the week.

Kevin De Bruyne
Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling grabbed a goal apiece in City’s 2-1 win over, while David Silva hinted at an upturn in consistency by producing points for the third successive Gameweek, courtesy of an assist for his side’s leveller.

Yet there can be no doubt that De Bruyne was the chief architect of City’s comeback win – he created seven scoring chances and was highly unfortunate to only to collect an assist for his efforts.

Nonetheless, a sublime pass for Sterling’s winner took De Bruyne’s total to eleven assists for the season – that’s more than his tally of 10 over the entirety of 2015/16 and seven clear than any team-mate.

A run of 11 matches without a goal leaves him on the periphery for now, but with Sergio Aguero edging closer to a return, De Bruyne still has the potential to edge back into consideration.

Nathan Ake
The most popular defender in the FPL market ahead of Gameweek 17, Bournemouth’s on-loan centre-half notched a third goal in the last six rounds of fixtures since nailing down a starting berth.

Ake is, of course, unavailable to feature against parent club Chelsea on Boxing Day but, beyond that, the bandwagon will likely pick up pace once more.

From Gameweek 19 onwards, the Cherries face Swansea City, Hull City, Watford and Palace in four of the subsequent five, affording Ake – who is now joint-top for goals scored at the back – the chance of further returns at both ends of the pitch.

Jay Rodriguez
Handed a second start in the last three Gameweeks, Rodriguez staked a claim for consideration by firing a double in Southampton’s 3-1 win at the Vitality.

Listed as a midfielder in FPL, it’s fair to say that the former Burnley man has done little to merit our attention up to now, with today’s pair of strikes his first goals since Gameweek 3.

Nonetheless, with Charlie Austin now sidelined for three or four months, Claude Puel’s decision to field Rodriguez as a lone striker in recent matches is worth monitoring.

Once next week’s clash with Spurs has passed, the St Mary’s outfit have some fine upcoming fixtures. Puel’s rotation policy is concerning, though, particularly with a two-legged EFL Cup semi-final against Liverpool also to factor in next month.

In Decline

Harry Kane
Home matches against Hull and Burnley looked tailor-made for the Spurs forward, earning him top billing in our Gameweek 16 and 17 Captain Polls.

But Kane proved a huge letdown by blanking on both occasions.

With the in-form Zlatan Ibrahimovic a hot property again, only Diego Costa’s one-match suspension will temporarily prevent Kane from being shown the door by many FPL managers over the next few days.

Yet with Costa and Aguero back from their bans in time for Gameweek 19, the battle amongst the premium priced forwards has never been fiercer. Kane will need to put on some performance at St Mary’s a week on Wednesday to prevent a festive fire sale.

Christian Eriksen
Second only to Adam Lallana for transfers in last week, Eriksen also failed to deliver in what seemed a plum home encounter.

Nonetheless, after producing 37 points in his previous two fixtures, the Dane remains Spurs’ form attacker and at a price of 8.6 to Kane’s lofty 11.3, many of his 15% owners will be happy to hold for the time being.

Another blank away to Southampton and there will be a need to re-assess – with the likes of Philippe Coutinho closing in on a comeback and Walcott braced for such fine fixtures, there’s no room for passengers in our midfield right now.

Toby Alderweireld
After being outscored by defensive team-mates Walker and Rose in the midweek win over Hull City, the Spurs centre-half missed out today with a minor back problem.

Having only recently returned from injury, Mauricio Pochettino is clearly determined to avoid taking risks with Alderweireld’s fitness.

At a time when the double-up on Chelsea’s resolute defence looks increasingly popular, the Belgian’s 10% FPL ownership may well decide to cut and run.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
A run of four straight starts was brought to an end as Alex Iwobi claimed the left wing role at the Etihad.

With a goal and four assists in the previous seven, Oxlade-Chamberlain seemed to have finally cemented a regular role in Wenger’s XI. Yet today’s teamsheet indicates his security of starts clearly remains in question, denying us a mid-price route into Arsenal’s attack ahead of those fine upcoming fixtures.

Having limped off just minutes after appearing off the bench as a sub, his injury situation is clearly worth monitoring, potentially allowing Iwobi to reclaim a spot over the coming spell.

John Stones and Kelechi Iheanacho
Guardiola’s decision to retain the same defence for the first time this season saw Stones warm the bench once again, with Aleksandar Kolarov and Nicolas Otamendi continuing at centre-half.

The summer signing from Everton remains in over 19% of FPL squads – making him the third most popular defender – and was sold by 76,000+ ahead of yesterday’s deadline.

Today’s starting XI looks set to trigger further sales prior to City’s Boxing Day trip to Hull City.

Iheanacho was again overlooked despite the absence of the suspended Aguero as the City manager opted for a “false nine” formation against Arsenal.

Handed a brief cameo at the end of today’s clash, the young Nigerian has managed just 64 minutes in the three matches that Aguero has missed through suspension.

Over 110,000 FPL managers parted company last week and, like Stones, Iheanacho looks in line for an exodus over the next few days. With Aguero primed to return in time for Gameweek 19, the short-term gamble on his City team-mate has proven to be a disastrous one.

    Lets sparkle some discussion.

How many of you fellows want Kun straight back in? Looks like hes not getting any lower than 12.8. When are you getting him? How are you getting him? Do any think its viable to go with the big three in the front? It lets you get a decent defence, Alexis, Cout but your 3-5 mids severely lack. Is it better to go balanced?

Also, are we all playing the wrong formation? With Austin gone, 3rd forward is a problem for many. Only Origi is currently scoring, Defoe/Tekkers are already pretty high in price. Should we ditch Haz in order to double up on Chelseas D? For 6+ something you basically get a midfielder with a regular chance of CS. Arsenal and United also have a great run of fixtures. Should 442 be preffered formation? I dont think Id want anything up to 6.5 in the mid or front whereas Toby, Walker, Rose, Azpi, Alonso and Bellers all have the potential to get great scores week in/out.

    Whats your opinion/plan?

      Not getting Kun
      Will not lose Hazard.
Big front 3 leaves team too unbalanced
I understand the value that those premium defenders bring but 442 formation might be pushing it.

Thats you sorted then. Wish I had the same trust in me not getting him, as his points per value werent nothing to speak about it. But its those hauls he has that can make or break the season.

I feel entirely different about Haz. Missed his haul and watch him every week as he gets nothing. Fixtures are still there so Im waiting on him but hes on the chopping board for me, waiting to pull the trigger.

I feel this game is all about spreading the risk and making good financial picks.

There is so much value in the midfield i have chosen to go 3-5-2 for the first time this season with Ibra and Defoe up top but Defoe will make way for Costa / Ibra double header.
This will make it easier for a Hazard/Sanchez double up along with the likes of Eriksen/Siggy/Lallana/Coutinho.
Alonso down back with a rotating 'nailed' 4 man bench.

Is there though? That 352 with a 5-6.5 mid could easily be a 442 with one of the names defenders. Your core stays virtually the same. You have 2 strikers, your big mid hitters in the first 2-3 spots. Your 4th spot in normally some value, like Siggy. It depends on the fifth though. With someone that didnt build TV in the first half that needs to depend on Zahas/Allens/Cans of this world, it could be worth to get ahead of the curve and invest into the premium defender instead of the cheap midfielder. As said, they cost almost the same.

Great questions! Wish I knew the answers. Maybe getting Kun gameweek 20 but not immediately. Partly depends how Ibra continues. Not ditching Hazard anytime soon and unwilling to invest more in defence as a bit of flexibility itb could be valuable if Kun does re-essentialise himself.

      1. CloudSky

Thats kind of my plan. So many variables thst I think its too hard to plan for his return. As said above, not sold on Haz so unless he gets a big haul, its probably him with Ibra to Kun + Cout.

Thats true, but many of those are dead teams that should be sorted at the end of the season as they fall behind. With you in the top 750k where theres Costa with his ownership, Ibra and Kane, Kun could still be a diferential if you get on the wagon fast.

Agreed on KDB though. Hes worth the risk, great player. Would be an essential FPL asset probably if not for Pep.

One of those big threes, maybe. Cant see a lot of people selling Alexis and Costa, looking like season keepers contenders. Cout should also be a great enabler at that 8.1/2 price. I can see him getting back to most owned if he shows some form after injury. Imo its going to boil down to Ibra +1.5 for your mid/defence/3rd striker or Kun.

Alonso's PPG is almost the same as Hazard, but he's 5m or so cheaper.... Is there any reason at all not having Alonso, seems like a must? I currently don't have him but have Hazard....

Exactly. Why stick with Haz when you can double up on Azpi/Alonso and get maybe Rose and Bellers in the 3rd and 4th spots. All better players than anything up to 6.5 can offer in mid and front.

Im probably doing the same with Haz instead of your KDB. Feels like the easiest path onto Kun. But what happens when one of KDB/Haz gets the haul and Ibra still fires every other week? Do you still make the switch?

Yeah, I just need Arsenal to start keeping cleanies. Koscielny Rose Alonso Brunt Holebas. Just don't see any mid or striker around 6.0 being any good (now Austin is gone). Dare to change!

I think most players are going to be subject to rotation, he's just played 3 in one week so not too concerned. Got Holebas/Brunt as cover so willing to risk it.

It does feel a bit risky at times, but I try and think that Alonso/Rose/Kosc and their brothers offer incredible value when others are chasing Gundogan/Allen/Capoues. Go for it!

Looks very good. 4 and 5th mid possible weak area but can't have it all. You got much more patience with Firmino I gave up last week and got Lallana. Walcott an option too with those fixtures.

    Pickford - Robinson

    Ake - Alonso - Cedric - McAuley - Muniesa

    Hazard - Sanchez - Zaha - Eriksen - Sigurdson

    Benteke - Origi - Costa

I already took a -8 for Zaha, Benteke, Origi in for Kane, Anichebe, McArthur out. Prolly a stupid move but too many injured people.

What are your opinions, suggestions and what should I do for next gameweek? Would really appreciate if someone answers. (I got a 51 this week and haven't got above 60 in like 5 gameweeks 🙁 )

Potential transfers now only leaving 0.2 in the bank (left 0.5 last week).
Switch now or wait another week to avoid -8:

Kane > Ibra (Costa on bench GW18)
    Haz > Eriksen
    Ozil > Sanchez

Would of liked to spread over 2-3 GW but looks like I'll be unable to due to value changes.

    1. The Head-Ake
      • 9 Years

I would reckon you wait a week for Eriksen as Hazard would have a great role that Costa is injured. Ozil to Sanchez defo and rather than kane or ibra get 2 medium costly players like origi, benteke, rondon so you have more money for midfield or even later on

Kane has his crown now. Kane got some flak here but imagine what it would have been like if Lukaku had done the same for the last 2 weeks with those fixtures.

Difference being Everton were awful for 10 games yet people blamed Lukaku as a troll. If the team's playing badly and he's getting no service you shouldn't be owning him in the first place regardless of fixtures.

Fair point I don't sign up to the troll theory either all players do it.

    Morning all,

I think this is the first GW where I am struggling to see what to do and cant see any obvious moves.

    Boruc
    Alonso Cedric Holebas
Sanchez (VC) Hazard (C) Eriksen Siggy Allen
    Defoe Origi

    Pickford McAuley Costa Lenihan

    1FT and 0.3iTB

Any big issues or best to roll over the FT? Cant afford to do Costa > Ibra and I think i will want Costa back anyway.

I'd say based on liv vs eve, if lallana does well get him in instead on siggy. Holebas has been quite dreadful imo get him out for someone like ake after this week tho(cz he wont play) and keep costa and i think ull do well else ur team is pretty darn good
