Zlatan blends goals and assists to provide a season-high tally. Pedro furthers his mid-price CV with another Stamford Bridge haul, while yesterday’s men Romelu Lukaku and Raheem Sterling suggest that they may yet have a major say in our seasons. Here’s the Stock Check following Boxing Day’s eight matches.

On the Rise

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
United’s frontman justified his place at the top of our Gameweek 18 Captain Poll with one goal and a pair of assists helping him serve up 15 points at home to Sunderland.

Not only was this his biggest haul of the season, it was also Ibrahimovic’s third successive double-figure tally at a time where both Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero return to contention following suspension.

With the fixtures still very much in United’s favour, Zlatan’s bandwagon looks set to roll on ahead of a home clash with Middlesbrough – only Costa has earned more transfers in since yesterday’s deadline.

Just five points behind the Chelsea striker in the FPL standings, Ibrahimovic has more than atoned for his patchy early-season output and is finally starting to justify his status as the top-owned player in the game.

Pedro
A goal and assist at home to Bournemouth once again highlighted the Spaniard’s importance to Chelsea’s attack.

With Diego Costa in the stands, Pedro served up the points for a fifth time in his last six appearances at the Bridge, bettering Eden Hazard by 13 points to 10.

However, a fifth yellow card of the campaign has ensured that the former Barcelona man will remain off our radars for the time being. He will miss the Gameweek 19 visit of Stoke City to return for the trip to White Hart Lane in Gameweek 20.

Nonetheless, a price of just 7.0 and owned by just 3% of managers, Pedro continues to look a viable value route into Antonio Conte’s three-man frontline for those who feel Costa and Hazard are too demanding on the budget.

Eden Hazard
Handed the central support role against Bournemouth in place of the suspended Costa, Hazard had to rely on penalty duties to get amongst the goals.

Granted, the Belgian has struggled to replicate the same sort of consistency as team-mate Costa, yet yesterday’s strike takes him to just two points off the Spain international ahead of the New Year’s Eve visit from Stoke City.

With Ibrahimovic and Aguero battling it out for our three-man frontlines, those with a 3-5-2 set-up may well choose to overlook Costa, with spot-kicks and midfield classification strengthening Hazard’s appeal as an alternative.

However, he will likely need to build on current form to improve his output – two goals in six Gameweek appears to fall short of the demands put upon a heavy-hitter in the current landscape.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan
The silky Armenian returned to the Manchester United squad and emerged from the bench to flick home a sublime goal and underline his undoubted talent.

With strikes in his last two appearances, Mkhitaryan is beginning to suggest that he can emerge as a force and a potential differential throughout 2017.

Priced at 8.9, a start against Middlesbrough in Gameweek 19 would offer us another opportunity to assess his stock as a consideration for our midfields.

Tom Heaton
The keeper made just a pair of saves in the 1-0 win over Middlesbrough, but Heaton claimed 15 recoveries to earn the maximum bonus points on offer.

The Burnley skipper has now fetched 13 bonus points and is just six behind Thibaut Courtois at the top of the overall FPL goalkeeper standings, despite earning just four clean sheets to the Chelsea man’s 11.

Winston Reid
Now ranked fifth for FPL defenders, Reid plundered a third goal of the season in the 4-1 win at Swansea City and collected bonus points for the third successive Gameweek.

Level with Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta for that metric on 15, Reid has clearly emerged as the go-to option in the West Ham defence.

A trip to Leicester City follows, with an upturn in fixtures from Gameweek 21 promoting possible investment in Slaven Bilic’s improving rearguard.

Andy Carroll
A second goal of the season on his third consecutive league start hints that Carroll could yet emerge as a viable mid-price striker option.

Currently valued at just 6.2, he is another Hammer who could come into the equation from Gameweek 21 should he continue to prove his fitness following a string of injury setbacks.

Michail Antonio
The third West Ham asset to come out of the victory in South Wales with credit and a Stock Check boost.

Antonio returned to a role on the right flank and claimed a third goal in six Gameweeks to remain on simmer as a midfield selection.

Now down to just 6.7, Antonio could offer obvious value should he be retained in an advanced role ahead of those aforementioned Hammers’ fixtures.

Romelu Lukaku
The forgotten man among FPL forwards, Lukaku offered a reminder of his abilities by claiming a superb second goal for Everton in the 2-0 win over Leicester City.

Robbed of his blossoming partnership with Yannick Bolasie, Lukaku had appeared to stall badly as a potential Fantasy asset, scoring in just one of seven matches between Gameweeks 11 and 17.

However, following two goals at Watford and the confidence shown in his King Power Stadium strike, it’s clear that we should not write off the 9.4 priced asset just yet, particularly with Everton’s fixtures improving markedly from Gameweek 22.

Mason Holgate
Returning to the Everton line-up for the first time since Gameweek 3, it remains to be seen if the 4.0 priced asset can now cement regular starts.

Everton kept only a fourth clean sheet of the season at Leicester, as Ronald Koeman shifted to a 3-4-2-1 system, electing to again leave Phil Jagielka on his bench and deploying Holgate on the right-side of his three-man backline, pushing both Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines forward as wing-backs.

Raheem Sterling
Another early-season asset experiencing a renaissance, Sterling returned two assists in Manchester City’s win at Hull City to maintain a recent ascent.

After starting just twice between Gameweek 11-15, Sterling has been named in the City first XI in each of the subsequent three, providing returns on each occasion.

Now priced at just 7.6, Sterling could certainly be a short-term differential to be exploited when we can be more certain of Pep Guardiola’s teamsheet selection.

Yaya Toure
Toure’s dominant performance in the City midfield demonstrated his growing influence for Guardiola’s men.

The Ivorian has now started five of the last seven Gameweeks, having benefited from the long-term injury to Ilkay Gundogan.

Toure’s second-half penalty took him to three goals for the season, although he will likely relinquish those duties on Sergio Aguero’s return for the Gameweek 19 visit to Liverpool.

In Decline

Christian Benteke
Now without a goal in three Gameweeks, Benteke missed a second penalty of the campaign to return a -1 figure for the second occasion.

This has lead Sam Allardyce to suggest that he may now revise his designated spot-kick taker.

The reaction has been instant, with the Belgian ranking only behind Spurs’ Harry Kane for transfers out among FPL strikers ahead of Gameweek 19.

However, giving up on Benteke may well be premature.

It is expected that we will witness a revival under Allardyce and, with the fixture list turning very kind for the Eagles from Gameweek 21, investment in their assets may spike.

Benteke’s output could depend on the availability of winger Wilfried Zaha, with Allardyce indicating that he is set to discuss his potential departure to the Africa Cup of Nations imminently.

Gylfi Sigurdsson
The Icelandic international is struggling to overcome a series of abject Swansea City displays to deliver on his potential.

Having blanked in three successive Gameweeks, the pressure on Sigurdsson to perform in the visit of Bournemouth next time out has now intensified.

Following that, Swansea and Sigurdsson face another crunch clash with Palace before the fixture list turns on the Welsh club.

Alexis Sanchez
The Chilean sparkled throughout the 1-0 victory over West Brom, amassing more efforts on goal than any other player in Gameweek 18.

His goal threat blossomed despite being shifted to a role on the flank to make way for Olivier Giroud, Arsenal’s eventual match-winner.

Patience is surely the key, then, although with Costa and Aguero returning, Sanchez’ owners will likely need to see returns from the midfielder for the visit of Palace on New Years Day.

Certainly, a single goal and two assists from the last four Gameweeks struggles to justify a 11.9 price tag. But Arsenal’s encouraging run of opponents suggests that Sanchez will soon improve on that output, casting real doubt on the validity of any exit plan.

Theo Walcott
While Sanchez blanked, Walcott failed to make the line-up as he was de-railed by a minor calf complaint.

The reaction has been instant. Despite returning three goals in his last five Gameweek starts, Walcott is already the most sold FPL midfield asset ahead of a possible return against Palace for Gameweek 19.

Again, Arsenal’s fixture list appears to promote patience, although unlike Sanchez, Walcott’s starting berth could soon come under threat from the fit-again Aaron Ramsey and Danny Welbeck.

Kevin De Bruyne
While both Toure and Sterling promoted their cause in the Hull City victory, the jury remains out on De Bruyne’s value to our midfields.

He has now failed to score in 12 Gameweek appearances and, while a peerless supply of assists have kept his tally ticking over, De Bruyne’s output is simply not measuring up to midfield rivals.

The concept that De Bruyne can cover for Sergio Aguero’s returns surely needs revising, given that he is now without a double-figure total since Gameweek 6.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

What key lessons did you learn from the Boxing Day fixtures?

    Was it Zlatan’s essential status?

Or was it that Hazard can now be trusted again with the armband?

    Do we even need Aguero?

Or was it that West Brom away continue to offer slender returns for their opponents?

For me it revolves around Crystal Palace and Yohann Cabaye. Yes he scored but what looks like taking place under Big Sam is the Frenchman being given greater freedom to attack – as he did so well for Newcastle in the past. For me I’m wondering if Cabaye not Benteke may be the best Fantasy prospect. Could he also snatch penalties back from Benteke too?

Early days yet but against Watford Cabaye mustered three goal attempts - double his Gameweek shot average prior to Boxing Day. Could this improvement be the shape of things to come?

Big Sam loves a talented attacking midfielder (see Okocha and Djorkaeff) and I wonder whether he will start building a team around him?

Cabaye and Palace defence for me. Allardyce clearly looking for 1-0 wins and goals from set pieces.

              Rondon v Benteke
              Cabaye/Zaha v Philips

Those will be popular issues over the next two gameweeks. We have a game or so to monitor which is good.

Good call on Cabaye. I've been looking at Zaha if he doesn't go off to Afcon. Something like Siggy to Cabaye could enable double Chelsea defense.

Think I might miss Kun instead of trying to rip my team apart to get him in. I'll be playing 3-5-2 from now on as there are loads of points and value in midfield

I'm all up for loading on Palace, West Brom and Middlesbrough for value over the next 5-6 but Zaha is key.

If he remains at Palace in January, he looks set to offer real value as a fourth/fifth. Really tempted to flush money out of midfield to get on Phillips and Zaha to invest in a second big hitter up front.

Agree with this - If Koeman sticks with the back three then Holgate (4.0m) looks a good option. But it also brings Coleman and Baines into play as they will be higher up the pitch and more attacking. That in turn will bring Lukaku into the equation too. Fixtures turn good now too.

i'm looking to "flush" money out the midfield but to strengthen that 4th/5th mid. So i'm looking at Zaha, Phillips but also watchiong the Saints game to see watch Jay R does. If he's OOP then he has to be an option. Ideally want a situation where Can is a rotatable 5th mid.
Actually quite happy with Carroll atm as 3rd striker & his fixtures.

Zlatan seems to be involved in most of Utds goals in some way and seems to me to be vital to the way mourinho has them set up to play.

Chelsea continue to offer a very solid defence - currently have alonso but considering a double up in defence.

Aguero coming back makes things difficult, for me I'm going to take things one step at a time and won't bring him back until he/city look good again and by good I mean doing better than ibra or costa.

Cabaye certainly passed the eye test yesterday and Zaha looked lively enough as well.

As a new Benteke owner it was frustrating to watch him play as he lazily strolled around the pitch. There were a few times he should have been rushing to get on the end of a Zaha ball and was left outside the error.

I am looking at Palace assets though. The way I've set my team up I probably have to stick Benteke for a bit longer and I got him in thinking ahead to GW20 so I'm not itching to get rid, on another day he scores and brings him 6-8 points.

Scott Dann is the one I'm looking at. If Sam can tighten them up as people think he might then he could be great value if he can get a few more goals @ £5.3m.

Otherwise - I'm looking ahead to West Brom assets also in GW20. Brunt is already in my team but I may bring in one of Chadli or Phillips depending on the money I have.

Aguero is an interesting one - I don't think we need him with Ibra and Costa returning so frequently. The big thing with Aguero though is ownership - just 17% in the entire game which is low for him. It's not often you'll get him as a differential with Burnley (h) - it's tempting.

For me Ibra is the main striker we should be looking at right now. He has as many double figure hauls in the last 3 game weeks as Costa has all season. He's scored or assisted 16 times this season in 17 games - that's a good return. He has the points, the stats and the fixtures to keep on bringing home the bacon

Agree - Ibra, Costa, Sanchez, Chelsea defender look essential at the moment. Then I think it is about playing the form and fixtures game. WBA, Palace, Arsenal and Man Utd all have good fixtures and form (or in the case of Palace a managerial change that will have a positive impact).

I know a lot are going for the Chelsea double defence but their fixtures are about to turn for the worse.. Well ish, have a feeling some will end up a little disappointed. Those who haven't doubled up already that is, those who did have reaped the benefits... Sadly (Rivals!) 😀

352 is the formation for this year or even 442.

Premium strikers are so expensive, basically boils down to Ibra plus one other. Plus premium mods and defence (double Chelsea for me plus spurs) are delivering and cheaper 8mill strikers or below are not.

In midfield just go with 5 and they will eventually deliver I.e. Antonio yesterday, plenty of value around

I learned that Swansea are now 99% certainty of going down...they're in a death spiral under Bob Bradley.

My Ibra(c) to Siggy(c) backfired spectacularly...so much for trying something different after 5-6 weeks of captain fails picking the safe option

As per the above, Palace worthy of investment. Siggy to Zaha or Cabaye would open up Kane to Aguero as an option for me...unsure whether to bring Costa back in

Borini at 5.1 could be a good cheap striker option. Put him on my watch list when he returned from injury. Looks nailed. But wouldn't mind opinions from those more in the know.

What a great hot topic and quality replies so far :-).

One thing is for certain, the game this year evolves so quickly, like no other season I can remember. You have to constantly think and plan your upcoming moves, and be flexible to changing fortunes and form. This seems to make hits a little more palatable and dare I say essential than previous seasons.

      A proper FPL season.

I think the Ibra + Pogba combo is looking great. The most nailed on players in the team and good for BAPs. I am still not convinced by the Man U defence, both in terms of a settled back 4 and even keeping CSs.

Mkhi will probably be one of those that the timing of jumping on him as an FPL asset will be crucial. Still maybe too early?

Patience. Going back to discussions on the scoutcast on the winning formula for fantasy success, Boxing Day has taught me to pick good players for logical reasons (form, fixture, looked good when watching etc.) and trust your judgement and stick by them.

Pedro to Walcott was my transfer prior to Boxing Day... got in Pedro a few weeks ago because he looked good when playing, stats were reasonable, Chelsea are playing well etc. But I was impatient and after making the right call I didn't benefit from his 13pts. It's slightly bad luck as well on the Theo injury, but my Boxing Day takeaway is be more patient. Those with Benteke I urge to hold and not rage transfer out!

The key is patience at the right time, and that can be down to luck as much as anything.

Getting Wally in for Arsenal's great run of fixtures was understandable. The injury to Wally and Costa absence proved unlucky for you.

I think exercising more patience at this time of year, with so much rotation is prudent, but again, this is down to how individuals play the game.

Given current prices, the Ibra + Costa + cheapie (3-4-3 or 3-5-2) combo seems the way to go, but this could quickly evolve.

I don't really see Haz as a viable captain choice when Costa is back, which makes him expendable at the price, especially when the is so much more choice in the midfield players compared to the forwards.

Also, how is Brunt still owned by only 1.6%??

I've learnt I need to get rid of siggy, Swansea were so poor! I'm keeping for Bournmouth so I have 2 FT.
Also I need to get rid of holebas soon, he keeps getting yellows & Watford can't keep a CS & not scoring a lot. Plan on doing holebas to friend/chambers & upgrade evans to brunt.

Zlatan is Involved, whatever Man U create.

Chelsea's system is set up to feed their central striker, no matter who that actually is in any given game.

West Brom are difficult to break down when playing away, but not so stubborn that you can risk play their defenders / Foster.

Arsenal have a plan B - hoof it onto Giroud's noggin. Their plan A, however, seems to be Give It To Alexis. So he's going to get the returns over the season.

Man City are unreliable on the pitch, and erratic in terms of FPL returns. Same old City.

You'll get more regular returns from a second Chelsea defender rather than Hazard; Hazard might still outscore that defender for the season though.

The champion will be revealed in a midweek Scout Squad article on Tuesday, which will outline our initial thinking around the picks. Our and the champions picks will be revealed as usual the day before the first match of the Gameweek.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager” chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.

I have had exactly the same problem

Captained Sanchez Eriksen Kane Hazard last 4, all blanked. Capped Kane on 13 before that when Sanchez(vc) got 23. Hazard before that blanked. So in fact it has been 6 weeks for me of vice outscoring my cap.

    Bench Boost ?

Play when you have a fully available (and sarting) 5 with decent sub fixtures?
Play the week after WC on a double GW - giving you 15 DGW players??

Option 2 looks good BUT - wastes a WC, you stuck with those players the week before DGW and after the DGW ?

Option 1 for me I think

    1. Ha.
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 1 month ago

2, because you pick your WC team taking into consideration the DGW fixtures

      1. You Must Be Jokin Ere
        • 13 Years
        9 years, 1 month ago

Yes, but what about the points you could earn long term from an early WC if there are issues with your team that need sorting?

I suppose it depends on the DGW fixtures and the teams/players involved - the top 4/5 teams al with DGW action - would be hard to ignore

        1. Ha.
          • 10 Years
          9 years, 1 month ago

Well that is entirely situational. If you currently have a terrible team then of course there is merit, but generally I would be looking to hold on to a WC.

    Midfield Compensators.

There are 4 premium strikers (Ibra, Aguero, Kane & Costa) and you obviously can't have them all.

So my question is which - if any - midfielders can compensate for a heavy hitter striker?

    1) Can Pogba or Mkhitaryan cover Ibra?

    2) Can Sterling or KDB cover Aguero?

    3) Can Erikson of Ali cover Kane?

And the big one ... 4) Can Hazard (or maybe Pedro) cover Costa?

Well it all depends on form of course, at this moment Eriksen/Alli are better options than Kane so yes they can cover him, but that might be different in 5 weeks time.

Cover isn't needed. Either the player is going to score points or they aren't.

I'd rather have no-one from City than put Sterling or KDB in my team.

Chelsea maybe not the best example as they're similarly priced but basically yes - in a defence if you're just looking at players with clean sheet potential and not attacking returns it's sometimes best to just cover with the cheaper player.

Ibra, Costa & Mkhi are the only ones id consider right now out of those.

But no I dont think any of those can compensate for their respective partners except maybe Hazard if he turn his form and is more consistent.

Cover is the most ridiculous thing. No Pogba can't "cover" Zlatan.

Zlatan has scored 110 points and Pogba has scored 66 points that's a 44 point difference.

Points is what wins you mini leagues and overall rank. Go with the players who score the most points.

But if you simply haven't got the slot open for a premium player, surely it's sensible to look at his high scoring teammate?

        1. Ha.
          • 10 Years
          9 years, 1 month ago

Exactly. You can't cover all the top scoring players in your team, but you can build it around players who score relatively well in the absence of having other players. It's less about covering individuals, rather choosing the mix of players that exposes you to the greatest amount of points.

If Man City start playing well, KDB will be involved. Sure Agustin will too, but that used up a striker slot. Ibra is hoovering up points at the moment and Harry Kane has had two 20 goal seasons. Costa is reliable but Hazard is explosive.

I would therefore rather have Kane, Ibra, KDB and Hazard. Coverage only in the sense that I think they are the best combination. This is in theory, of course. Depends on form and fixtures, but the principle is there.
