Zlatan’s time is now and perhaps forever, while Mkhitaryan’s moment approaches. Lallana is slowly putting the Liverpool midfield argument to rest, while a pragmatic Ronald Koeman may just have delivered a new budget solution at the back. Here’s our lessons learned from Gameweek 18 so far…

Ibrahimovic can be a season keeper…
A 15 point-haul against Sunderland was not just his biggest tally of the season; it also meant that Zlatan Ibrahimovic became the first player to record three successive double-figure returns in the campaign.

Backed by more than 25% of FPL managers with the captaincy, this new level of consistent heavy scoring has us look on the Manchester United striker with new eyes.

Regardless of our decision on Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero, it appears we can turn to Ibrahimovic for assured returns – not just in the short-term but perhaps over the season as a whole.

His influence in Jose Mourinho’s side arguably outweighs even that of Costa for Chelsea and Aguero for Pep Guardiola’s men.

United build around Ibrahimovic. His ability to drop deep and play in midfield runners, as well as being a target for crosses from the flank, appears to dictate their attacking ploys. He’s also on penalties and direct free-kicks. In short, he is the United attack.

Both Chelsea and City have won Premier League matches when devoid of their principal strikers. United failed to do that without Ibrahimovic and, according to Mourinho’s recent comments, they may never have to try a second time.

The Mkhitaryan option is close…
While Ibrahimovic is constant, along with Paul Pogba, there appears to be a shifting cast of attacking assets deployed by Mourinho.

But Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s time is surely imminent.

His goal against Sunderland, a second in as many Premier League appearances, demonstrated a rare talent that surely Mourinho can only keep shackled for so long.

Still priced at 8.9, Mkhitaryan constitutes a gamble for Fantasy managers, at least until we can be close to certain on regular starts.

There’s no guarantee that the gifted Armenian will ever achieve that, which could still consign him to a role of short-term differential.

However, once installed, Mkhitaryan clearly has the ability to make it difficult for Mourinho to go on juggling his resources. We watch and wait.

Lallana’s progress will calm interest in a fit-again Coutinho…
A seventh goal of the season, coupled with six assists, has put some distance between Adam Lallana and an absent Philippe Coutinho.

Boasting almost identical Fantasy Premier League points per match statistics, Lallana’s price tag of 7.5 threatens to keep Coutinho in the shade even on his return to fitness.

The Brazilian seems likely to be back in the frame for the visit to Old Trafford for Gameweek 21, by which point the difference in price between the two Liverpool assets could be far narrower than the current 0.7 gap.

However, Lallana’s 19.2% ownership will surely continue to grow with his new suitors perhaps unlikely to trade unless Coutinho can begin to significantly outstrip his team-mate.

On the evidence so far, Lallana is equipped to see off such a challenge and perhaps put the debate on the Liverpool midfield to rest.

Conte doesn’t see Batshuayi as an option…
When Antonio Conte discussed alternative plans in Thursday’s press conference, turning down the opportunity to boost the confidence of striker Michy Batshuayi, it became clear that the Belgian was unlikely to be his choice to fill the void left by Diego Costa’s suspension.

Restricted to a final-minute appearance, ironically replacing Eden Hazard, the man earmarked for the central attacking role; it is now obvious that Conte does not consider the Batshuayi as a viable “plan B”.

Should Costa face any further forced periods of absence through injury or suspension, we can, therefore, presume that the Chelsea boss will again look to his midfield for a solution, deploying a fluid front trio with Hazard and Pedro tasked with providing a cutting edge.

Pedro won’t be put in the corner…
The Spaniard’s double-figure haul, his third of the season, demonstrated again that he has the potential to break up our preferred template of Chelsea assets.

There can be little argument that three Blues assets are deserving of slots in our squads but, as it stands, there is much debate about the optimum configuration.

Pedro remains another variable to consider in this argument. Priced at just 7.0, he arguably presents outstanding value as a fourth midfield option or even a fifth for those deploying a 3-5-2 set-up.

Certainly, given his performance against Bournemouth, he seems likely to oust Willian back to the bench for the Gameweek 20 meeting with Spurs once his one-match suspension against Stoke has been served.

….but Giroud seems resigned to it….
Arsene Wenger also has a selection headache, although the Gunners boss appears to have few concerns on revealing his thinking with regards to Olivier Giroud’s position in the pecking order.

Despite his decisive goal against West Brom, the French striker would seem likely to be back on the bench for the visit of Crystal Palace – particularly if Theo Walcott is fit to return.

Encouragingly for owners of Alexis Sanchez, Giroud’s first start in the central striker role did little to douse the Chilean’s fire. He mustered nine attempts on goal, six from inside the box – in both cases more than any other player in Gameweek 19 so far.

Even so, Sanchez will likely need to deliver on New Year’s Day to calm the possibility of FPL sales. Giroud may well play his part in that by reclaiming a role on the bench.

Koeman may just be prioritising clean sheets…
We saw Ronald Koeman arrest a slide while at Southampton with a shift to a three-man defence. That stifled their goal threat but got them points on the board and a sustained run of clean sheets.

Now, having suffered a similar malaise at Everton, the Dutchman appears to be considering the same approach.

A three-man defence was deployed in the 2-0 win over Leicester City, as Koeman’s rearguard kept just a fourth shut-out of the campaign.

Everton conceded just a single attempt from inside their own box in Monday’s clash. Damning evidence of the Foxes’ own demise but perhaps also indication that Koeman’s system tweak had an affect. The 3-4-2-1 may well remain, then, certainly while Idrissa Gueye is absent at the Africa Cup of Nations.

If that means regular starts for Mason Holgate (4.0) and Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines as wing-backs, then we won’t be complaining.

There’s still life left in Lukaku…
But a more pragmatic approach from Koeman may just stifle Romelu Lukaku’s potential over the forthcoming spell.

It hardly held him back at the King Power: the Belgian’s goal was a superb example of the striker at his best, using strength, speed and composure to put the game to bed.

That goal was not the product of a striker out of form, or low on confidence. It was an indication that, in Fantasy terms, we cannot write off Lukaku amidst the scramble for Costa and Aguero.

Everton’s fixtures are about to turn in their favour, providing a platform for Lukaku to deliver. At 9.4, he could still be a value proposition if the Toffees can start playing with confidence and if Koeman’s tactical tweak can feed the striker.

Payet will struggle to compete with value Hammers…
While we sit and wait for Dimitri Payet to finally make his move, both Michail Antonio and Andy Carroll continue to re-build their reputations as mid-price Fantasy assets.

Antonio now appears to have resorted to scoring goals with his feet, leaving others to provide the aerial threat on the end of Payet’s deliveries.

His goal in the 4-1 rout of Swansea City was an eighth of a campaign that stalled with West Ham’s diminishing form and a change of position.

Now back on the right wing, Antonio is busily reviving his stock and attracting new suitors.

Meanwhile, Carroll’s own campaign for inclusion in our squads is picking up pace. A second goal in five appearances was the highlight of a performance against the Swans that bristled with menace typical of the muscular target man.

Carroll will trouble any defence and, at just 6.2, has to be an option to consider provided we’re willing to risk another breakdown.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Lallana is enough cover for the time being imo. Don't want to put in an injured guy on WC.
Chelsea don't concede. Think there are a fair few 1-0 grinding out results to come.

Yeah could go Ake. Would mean a weekly benching headache though.
Cabaye possibly on pens at that price. Hard to turn down.

FPL - A game of choices

FPL really is a game of choices. That is probably part of what makes it great - combining football with a test of our own judgement against others. This season has tested even the most seasoned FPL manager. Whereas in prior seasons we have had those cheap diamonds that break through as part of the bedrock of our teams (Vardy, Mahrez, Kane, Austin, Bellerin, Alli etc) this season feels different - it has become a true test of adaptability with captain choices and timing of transfers being even more vital.

Being almost half way through the season most managers are planning for the second half. But those choices still remain:

    1) Which of the big hitters should I pick (Costa, Aguero, Ibra, Lukaku, KDB, Hazard, Sanchez, Payet, Kane, Ozil, Mane etc.)?
    2) Who are those mid-priced players I can trust to deliver (Benteke, Defoe, Pedro, Lallana, Firmino, Coutinho, Antonio, Alli, Eriksen, Walcott etc.)?
    3) Who are those cheap jewels to stick with or bring in (Origi, Rondon, Phillips, Zaha, Capoue, Allen etc)?
    4) Should I choose attacking potential over clean sheet potential in defence (Holebas, Brunt, Smith etc.)?
    5) Should I choose save potential over clean sheet potential in goal (Heaton, Pickford, Grant, Valdes etc.)?

So what do FPL managers think are the answers?

      1) Aguero, Zlatan, Costa and Sanchez.
      2) Defoe and Lallana.
      3) For now, Phillips but Zaha when he returns post-ACON.
      4) Brunt combines both, as does Alonso. There's no need to choose one over the other.
      5) Yes. Heaton has been a save and bonus magnet.

1,2,3 - all of the above it's not the players it's getting them in and out at the right times
4 - both important (see Alonso for details)
5 - I'd say cleanies over save points, but then I've had Heaton ages and he is more the latter than former, sometimes a beautiful double!

I guess this is an attempt to simplify something quite simple, though something we all complicate needlessly in our silly human brains. It all basically boils down to 1 over-arching question, rather than 5. That is:

Which players are the best value?

And then the small matter of putting them together in accordance to the rules, and getting the most of of 11 players each week.

Defining value is difficult. I look at 'Value' as measured by the FPL site and it is filled with Zaha, Capoue, Allen, Snodgrass. Undoubtedly 'value' for their price, but they are not going to generate the absolute returns that Sanchez, Costa etc. will.

I think the most useful measure of value is VORP (value over replacement player), applied to the squad (or at least the starting eleven) as a whole rather than just to individual players, the objective being to gain the greatest number of points from the available budget for the squad as a whole.

But the relative values of players keep changing according to form and fixtures, and ideally they should be based on expected future points, not just on points already scored.

It's a rare jewel to come across a hot topic that encapsulates what we are all thinking yet never seem to articulate with words. You have become my favourite poster.

Fwiw, (not much these days it seems):

      1. Costa, Ibra, Sanchez and Hazard have all earned the right for a place in our squads esp if you take the view that CHS's form will be maintained throughout the season. The key is how do we fit the likes of Lallana and Erikson into our squads around them.
      2. The ones I like are Lallana, Erikson and Walcott (provided he stays injury free). Lallana has the points in the bag to prove his worth and Erikson's stats are mindblowing that I feel he is certain to keep on producing.
      3. Of the cheapies, if you bought Capooee at 4.5, then there's no point dispensing with his services. Phillips is a player I want and I have been very happy with Origi's returns. The others don't quite appeal as yet but keep an eye on the likes of Cabeye, Holgate, Ake and Friend.
      4. I would always advise attacking returns over defensive returns. History has always proven thus. Apart from CHS, there isn't a great deal of reliabilty out there anyway.
      5. Actually a bit of both and this is where the Heaton/Foster combination works so well. About the only thing I have got right this wretched season.

For once, a post worth responding to and deserving of considered replies.

This is what currently sits in my team:

    Foster Jaku

    Cedric Evans Alonso Pieters Amat
    Sanchezs Allen Pogba Capoue Lallana
    Defoe Kane Ibra

... and this is what I am looking at for a possible WC team (first attempt):

    Foster Jaku
    Ake Evans Alonso Pieters Amat
    Sanchez Mkhitaryan Lallana Capoue Yaya/Sterling
    Costa Ibra Barnes

The Barnes-part is obviously an enabler, and I'm really not sure I have the balls to do this. Also; ignoring Kun for now (hello 5 goal brace).

No, based on fixtures. Just think Costa has the slight edge on him. Also those blanks against Hull and Burnley present a trust issue. If he can't score against those teams at home then what use is he to Fantasy managers.

Costa on the other hand can score against anyone - plus he had some tough games over the period your are focusing on.

Overall Costa is by miles a better fantasy prospect this season.

It was almost exactly this time last year that Kane took off.
Went pt for pt with Aguero to the end of the season.

Big thing could be which formation Poch sticks with. Stays with 3 at the back with Walker & Rose pushing forward and chances must come.

But for me it's Costa atm. Scoring home and away in a team that just looks like it's pretty much unstoppable atm.

But Costa to Kane (if things change) is a simple move. Not like having to find 2m for Kun.
So stick with the form player for now.

Aké or a Boro defender. Aké away to Swansea after having his feet up over Xmas has tempted me.

Will Ibrahimovic be fine to play Boro/West Ham or is there a fear of rotation/early sub?

I think he'll play both - hasn't missed a single minute in games he's been available for, we don't have a good enough replacement for him.

I'm not even sure his minutes will get managed - reckon he gets a break in the FA Cup.

Good thing is, Mourinho has been quite open about whether he's going to play or not so worth keeping an eye on the pressers.

Less of a chance than Ibra, since he just came back from injury also and we have quite a few options for the flanks. But maybe since he's been amazing.

Can only see reduced minutes myself, if at all. Expect him to have done his job by then though.

Do you think Sturridge dislodges Origi next game Berbs?

        Not sure if Shared:

Wilfried Zaha has been named in the Ivory Coast's preliminary squad for the African Cup of Nations.

The winger has previously represented England at full senior level in international friendlies but could now switch to the African nation.

Should he depart for the tournament Crystal Palace may need to seek a replacement for him as cover.

Majority of the people chose Philips over Cabaye when I asked who's the better option.

But when I asked double up on WBA (Rondon & Philips) or Cabaye over Phillips majority chose Cabaye.

So does that mean Philips is a better option than Cabaye but people are reluctant to double up on WBA attackers even though they have better fixtures than Palace?

I personally feel Philips is better option than Cabaye and Rondon is a better option than Benteke.

        Would really appreciate your thoughts!

G'day all. May I have your thoughts on this team? I've heard a few people saying I should keep Chadli, is it okay otherwise or should I plan to WC early in January?

        Heaton
        Clyne Kosc Alonso
        Eriksen Chadli Lallana Sanchez
        Lukaku Ibra Defoe

        (Foster Capoue Amat Souare)

I dunno about Chadders. He's completely out of form, and doesn't even seem to be that nailed. I'd definitely keep him though and assess the situation (HUL can be a trial run).

I don't get why people are WCing ASAP. Surely you should try and keep for the DGW?

Your team is great though. Save and use the 2FTs to get rid of Eriksen/Clyne/Lukaku at the weekend.

Lukaku is a toughie. I think he'll keep ticking over with goals (and he hoovers up the BAPs which is a nice 'bonus').

Keep him I guess. You just lack a bit of firepower up top.

I'd save the FT and do Eriksen + Clyne -> Azpi (form)+ Phillips/Chadli (fixtures) or something.
