A Gameweek that has delivered modest returns so far, continues at pace with an tea-time encounter of some promise.

Liverpool host Manchester City at Anfield, with Fantasy managers on alert and on a scouting mission as Sergio Aguero makes a return from a four-match ban to lead the attack for Pep Guardiola’s men.

There’s also a significant change in the Reds line-up, as manager Jurgen Klopp brings Emre Can into his starting XI, shifting Roberto Firmino back to the central striker role, with Divock Origi dropping to the bench.

The Belgian went into Gameweek 19 found in more than 434,000 FPL squads having provided four goals and two assists in his last six appearances.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

is taking a minus 4 reasonable to bring Aguero in? If yes how about a minus 8?

Aguero is not the answer to all things fantasy football city have tough fixtures after Burnley and are not playing well.

I like the Phillips move though Chelseas fixtures are getting more difficult for a few weeks.

    Thoughts on the game

Woke at 4.30am on new years day for the most anticipated game of the season. It didn't disappoint. While certainly not the all time classic we got from Chelsea and City, it was an enthralling tactical clash as Klopp's gegenpress met Pep's possession and positioning mastery for the first time on English soil. It's now Klopp 5 Pep 4 and the perfect start to 2017 for Liverpool.

Was a game of two halves as they say. Liverpool were just brilliant in the first half. More dominant than Epic's missus on his birthday. Constantly winning the ball back high up the pitch with support in numbers, they were always proactive and dangerous. Moving the ball fast and decisively. City looked to keep possession and move the ball quickly all around the pitch, the idea being to tire Liverpool out which would eventually create more space for the likes of De Bruyne, Silva, Sterling and Aguero to work their magic. They just couldn't get a foothold on the game in the first half such was Liverpool's dominance.

Second half was all city for a very long period. They upped the press and intensity from the kickoff, forcing mistakes from Liverpool. Still they were restricted to half chances at best as the reds fought admirably with their backs to the wall. A forced substitution of Henderson to Origi swung the momentum back to Liverpool, who could have sealed the deal a couple of times late on.

Mignolet. Didn't have to do much but did what he had to well.

Clyne. Solid. A bit wasteful going forward.

Lovren. This guy has improved out of sight from the player under Brendan Rodgers. Impressive

Klavan. What a bargain of a signing. Dominant display again. Should be starting with Matip IMO.

Milner. One very dodgy back pass. Brilliant passing from the left flank. There is still the odd moment where you can see he isn't a left back but they are rare. He's consistent, reliable, flexible and just quality. City's loss our gain.

Hendo & Can. Warriors. Great in the first half. Struggled in the second.

Wijnaldum. This guy has been an unsung hero this season. Well now they are singing. Quality header. More freedom with Can and Hendo alongside, could happen more often when Mane leaves.

Lallana. Class again when on the ball. Great cross for the goal. England's best player without a doubt.

Mane. Caused problems with his pace and direct running. He'll be very missed in January.

Firmino. Some drool worthy moments as always. If he crossed early late on could have made it 2-0, went for something much more ridiculous and nearly pulled it off. I love this guy.

Origi. Changed the game with his physical presence and pressing from the front. Smart call by Klopp

Not as much to say about city players. They all struggled to deal with the intensity of the opposition today. With their superstar coach and players, massive paychecks and even bigger egos people love to hate them. Personally I am really enjoying the early days of the Pep revolution there. It will take time but everything is heading in the right direction and they are much better than last season. As long as the press don't hound pep out of the country they will have success over the next few years.

Bravo. This guy is dicey. I can relate.

Defence. Did really well to limit Liverpool's shooting chances.

    Yaya. They miss Gundogan

Sterling. City's biggest threat. I love watching this kid. I have no hard feelings at all about him moving to city. Awesome to watch him growing into a great player under Pep's tutelage.

Silva & KDB. Credit to liverpool for keeping them so quiet. Didn't give them an inch.

    Aguero. Anonymous.

Can't really disagree with anything you said. I would say I'd give a bit more credit to Silva, created almost everything when he switched to the middle in the second half.

Before reading this though, my personal opinions:

Can, Milner, and Wijnaldum really impressed me. Mane was pretty anonymous, Firmino's decision making was poor. Origi, huge impact off the bench. Klavan played really well but tendency to foul could be an issue. Clyne got forward but wasted some good chances. Mignolet, nothing to do. Lovren pretty anonymous but that's a good thing.

For City, Sterling, Stones, Fernandinho, and Silva are the only ones who can come out of this proudly. Sterling especially. A joy to watch. Stones was really good and aggressive. Silva was much better than KDB when he switched to the middle in the second half. Fernandinho gritty as always. Yaya, lethargic. Kolarov and Zabaleta a joke. Otamendi's passing was poor. Bravo gives me heart attacks. Aguero is always offside.

As for Pep, I think he's been overcomplicating it for a while. He has to work for a level of consistency in our lineups. Sagna should always be starting when fit until we can get someone better. Like it or not, Kolarov is a major weakness. Yaya cannot play in high energy games. We should be playing wingers when they are fit.

He got it right for the first 10 games of the season, then (I remember this vividly) he played three at the back against Everton and it's gone downhill since. We're a very good team with a very good manager, and we can compete with the best (evident in the Barcelona, United, Arsenal, and the Chelsea game). Now we have to stop overcomplicating things and fix the fundamental basics.

That defense doesn't have a single player that another top 6 team would want. Maybe Otamendi. And that says a lot.

The chopping and changing does effect continuity eh. That's his way though. I think his way will pay dividends over the long run. What he needs is more of his own signings that will thrive in his system. It takes a certain type of squad to be able to rotate and maintain the level. I feel like a lot people don't realise the problems he inherited with this squad and only see the classy attacking players. He just needs a bit of time to change everything.

True, but at the same time (maybe I'm playing devil's advocate but I've been thinking about this), a top manager shouldn't have to rely on signings alone? Granted there are many issues with this team but if we have to buy a whole new squad to fix it, why Pep? Couldn't any decent manager do that?

                • 16 Years

"a top manager shouldn't have to rely on signing alone" This is a good point. The way I see it among the best managers you can break them down into two camps. those that adapt their tactics to get the most from their players (a rare breed these days) and those that build a team to suit their tactics.
Pep has largely the same squad as last season and has them playing much better imo. As the old crew slowly change to his own signings it will get better and better. He needs to be given the time to do that.
Yes any decent manager can come in and use the massive budget to buy good players. We've seen time and again that doesn't guarantee success. I honestly believe Pep can win league titles in the most competitive era I can remember and maybe even the holy grail champions league. Again though, he needs time.
I realise this divides opinions and I could be very wrong.

P.S. Sane can become one of the best in the world I reckon. Wise footballing head on young shoulders. Got all the tools.

I get what you mean. We have to be patient, and it's tough after the treats we have gotten for a while. I hope he uses the academy more, rather than just buying solutions.

I think we would've had a different game on our hands if we had Sane starting today. Really like him, he's always looked good when he plays. Finally building up confidence now.

It's really hard to say with Mane leaving. Klopp could play Firmino on the right, Coutinho left and Origi up top. Lallana and Coutinho supporting firmino is another option.
Personally I think firmino as a false 9 works so well largely because of how Mane plays. So I'd like to see more Origi with Mane out.

Cheers all. Safe to say this was a success.

Siggy to Phillips and save the other it is then.

Siggy to Phillips right move. You could also look at upgrading Holebas to an Arsenal defender or just save.

Surely Chelsea captain is the only reasonable thing to do? They're getting the most rest = 90 minutes.

How's Alonso been given an assist for Costa's goal? There's no consistency in this game

Anyone that buys in Kun will not finish in the top 1 mill.

I was planning to upgrade to Aguero for a -4, but now not sure.

Kun was quiet and I think Origi could start and do well against a Sunderland team that just got hammered by Burnley.

          Siggy/Origi > Lallana/Bentekke (c) -4.
          What you reckon Jaf?

Was looking at something similar, HVT, but I'm worried Benteke will lose penalties and CPL won't be quite so attacking without Zaha and now under BFS.

I'm thinking of keeping Origi and changing Siggy/Fer to Phillips/Llalana.

        Ibrahimovic Costa Gray

Have been 352 all season (doing OKish, 80k) but mulling over the following:

        Foster

        Alonso Chambers Pieters (Amat/bench fodder)

        Morrison Sanchez Eriksen Hazard Pogba

        Costa Ibra Diomande

        a) Diomande & Eriksen to Phillips & Benteke
        b) Diomande & Hazard to Stirling & Benteke
        c) Neither, hold.

(doing a) allows me 0.8 to half way sort out that gash defence...)

        Can't find any valuable midfielder

        Zlatan-Costa-Anichebe

        1.2 tb

        B) Hazard+Kightly- > Phillips + Ozil -4p

Lol, being humped 31-19 in the cup by a ghost ship team...

My offensive San(c)hez,Kane,Eriksen versus his defensive Cech, Bellerin, Rose to settle it...(assuming auto sub Lallana in for Janssen for him) Looks like I need arsenal to concede to stand even a small chance!

Come on Alexis, time to stand up for us able seamen 🙂
