Sergio Aguero continues to create drama.

Today’s first act was an early afternoon bombshell from Manchester which sent shockwaves as Pep Guardiola’s teamsheet hit home.

Then, as the clock struck four, the second act followed: enter Aguero stage left to revive a ten-man City with a finish of sublime quality.

The full performance, spanning three hours, with Pep directing and Aguero as the dashing leading man, summed up our season so far with the Argentine.

It seems the days when Aguero settled in our squads and quietly went about the business of saving our Gameweeks are long gone.

Now the striker seems to insist on seeking the headlines and, just when we begin to settle on the idea of Aguero returning to his familiar groove, Pep intervenes with his own unpredictable flashes.

Some may have anticipated a benched Aguero against Burnley but I was certainly not among them.

Foolishly attempting to play “second guess Pep”, I presumed that he had earmarked the visit of the Clarets as an opportunity to ease Aguero back into goalscoring form.

Instead, according to his post-match comments, he looked to protect his striker from exertion following his unconvincing run-out at Anfield.

“He played 90 minutes after four games out and I did not consider him playing 90 minutes again after two days.”

That seems plausible but why start him on the bench rather than use him to get in front and then hook him early?

Match fitness is surely the issue, and, with a rest in the FA Cup tie next weekend on the cards, why not allow Aguero to regain that sharpness with a start?

Such questions and arguments fall on deaf ears: Pep doesn’t answer to me, other Fantasy managers and perhaps not even to the City fans. Judging by his post-match interview, he barely answers to journalists.

We know he plays by his own rules and that those rules are so often hideously difficult to decipher.

By the end of act two, Aguero had delivered. A seven point return isn’t perhaps a cause for celebration for the 135,000 who transferred him in, or indeed the 11% who gave him the armband. But it came as a huge relief given the reaction at 2pm.

However, do today’s events add to the doubts and concerns surrounding Peps approach to Aguero?

Given that City’s Champions League campaign will accelerate again in February and, by that time, they may even be cast adrift in the title race, will Pep’s attitude to Aguero’s pitch time hinder the striker’s potential further?

There is also another factor.

Gabriel Jesus is now a Manchester City player. A precocious talent, Pep has made it clear that he is about to become another option.

“Now Gabriel Jesus is coming so we will have of course three strikers who can sense a goal.”

This won’t help matters.

We had doubts already but Pep’s approach and teamsheet for Burnley’s visit to the Etihad, just day’s after losing ground following the defeat to Liverpool, has perhaps compounded matters.

Following two acts of ill-discipline, we’re not sure if we can trust Aguero. We’re also not sure if Pep can be trusted to get him on the pitch in the first place.

Aguero had the final say with another reminder of his brilliance. We know the quality he brings but are we willing to risk the hefty fee to buy into the circus that comes with it?

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      Is this a WC team?

I'd downgrade one of the front three to upgrade mids. Lallana and Allen are sitting too deep for my liking. At a stretch, lose Walker and Love for two rotating cheapies and bring in Stanlislas and Alli / Erickson / Wally / Coutinho when back.

This gameweek's stalker update on the top 5 HOF managers. I apologise if it freaks any of them out seeing their moves analysed in this way, but for us lesser mortals I hope it provides insights on how to play the game successfully.

The headline transfer last gameweek was Kane to Costa, 3 of the 5 made this move, so I hope that makes you feel a bit better if you made the same move! In fact this week Kane has been removed from the two remaining teams despite his haul against Watford, to make way for Aguero. The pattern is Ibrahimovic is in every team supported by either Costa or Aguero, the third striker is cheap or mid-priced.

First here's why they are the best FPL managers:

    - lowest rank in the last 3 seasons for any of the top 5 is 4,324
    - highest rank in the last 3 seasons for any of the top 5 is 49

    GW20 moves

    *(c) GW20: Aguero x3, Firmino, Sanchez
*one team made no transfers, one team made 1 transfer with no hits, one team made 2 transfers with no hits, and two teams took a -4 hit (3 transfers and 2 transfers)
*players in: Aguero x3, Philips x2, Lallana, Stanislas, Chambers
*players out: Kane x2, Costa, Hazard, Eriksen, Sigurdsson, Capoue, Kingsley

*players in all 5 teams: Ibrahimovic, Sanchez
*players in 4 out of 5 teams: Alonso, Amat
*players in 3 out of 5 teams: Aguero, Eriksen, Sigurdsson, Phillips, Lallana, Foster, Heaton, Pickford
*three teams have a 3-4-3 formation
*two teams have a 3-5-2 formation
*3rd strikers: Anichebe x2, Benteke, Origi, Rondon

career HOF rank / squad value / ITB / total points after GW19 / FPL rank GW19 / (GW 18)
    #1 / 102.0 / 1.9 / 1,013 / 135,324 / (101,576)
    #2 / 102.8 / 0.9 / 1,062 / 22,462 / (32,436)
    #3 / 104.7 / 1.0 / 1,042 / 50,871 / (35,689)
    #4 / 103.8 / 0.9 / 962 / 516,652 / (670,718)
    #5 / 103.7 / 0.8 / 1,087 / 7,256 / (9,519)

Only one of the 5 qualified for the cup (#5), they went out out in GW19.

Always surprises me that their team values are so low given how successful they are (similar TVs to my team, but I am not doing as well as them).

Yeah, would you say 104 is an average TV at the moment? I'm expecting an improvement from them for the second half of the season if they are going to get anything like their old ranks. So I'm expecting an improvement in TV to go along with that. We shall see, it's my first season tracking the top 5 and I'm curious to see how they will get on!

Yeah around 105m seems about average (same as my TV). I too would expect their TVs to go up.

Many consistently successful players tend to play a bit safe and not to take many risks, minimising early transfers and hits.
That may result in a lower TV, but it avoids setbacks caused by injuries during the week and often results in better judged transfers and more points.

So it is quite wrong for some to claim that patience is no longer rewarded and that the price change mechanism ought to be changed to reward the patient.

Having said that, most of us do not have that degree of patience or the same quality of judgement; we prefer to play a little more aggressively and take more risks - and we are also too easily transfixed by price changes and team value.
That is the real reason for patient players being in the minority.

A few weeks ago they all got Kane, now none of them have him. They do tend to play the fixtures especially when buying a form player or a player with a history of performing well. Given what happened today I'm curious to see what happens with Aguero given he's such an expensive asset.

Chelsea is really where decisions are being made with teams right now I think.

I'm without Chelsea defence but have Hazard, and ditching him is the only way to get Aguero.

Everything hinges on Costa vs. Hazard vs. Aguero vs. Kane in my mind

Certainly with Ibra and Sanchez being fairly consistent, and with decent fixtures, it's the other options that have to make way. Interesting how quickly Kane disappeared from all their squads. Aguero vs Chelsea it seems!

Yeah I thought that was interesting too. Though Spurs for Chelsea and Burnley for Aguero may have had something to do with it, if they wanted all three it would require a few hits and reorganisation. If they all had good fixtures I wonder what would happen.

Team needs sorting out a bit!

    Grant, Randolph
    Rose, Alonso, McAuley, AMAT, TYMON
    Sanchez, Hazard, Lallana, SIGGY, MEYLER
    Aguero, Ibra, BORINI

Suggestions? Willing to go up to -4 but got very little room for maneuvre. Would love to get Coutinho for his return.

I think you have a good team. Some options: Sigy to Phillips, Amat to Ake or Chambers, or Brunt/Baines if budget allows. Lallana and Coutiniho - not sure I would want both, Pogba or Alli Eriksen instead of one perhaps?

Don't think it's too bad really.

              Amat or Lovren > Baines
That third striker spot is tough, Defoe maybe.

Actually Amat perma 3rd bench. Holebas has some great games now, potential at both ends. Evans has the fixtures though a "sideways" move to brunt probably good.
Evans/Lovren to Brunt/Ake and you are looking ok imo.

    Heaton - Jaku
    Alonso - Vert - Brunt - Holebas - Amat
    Sanchez - Eriksen - Lallana - SIGGY - Allen
    Ibra - Costa - LLORENTE

Siggy has become Mr Phillips, the third striker slot lies vacant - who usurps the incumbent Llorente? (2 FTs)

    A) Defoe (pens, probable price rises, reliable)
    B) Benteke (comparison tool favours him, decent set of fixtures forthcoming, but dodgy on pens and now Zaha-less)
    C) Giroud (mercurial, maligned and often messing around on the bench - but injury woes may favour a run)

That was my move this week. Spurs have mixed fixtures but Alli is looking really good. The Swans are in nosedive.

Looking at your team though you've got quite a bit of cash tied in midfield. Someone like Cabaye or a cheap 5th mid with Philips 4th would allow you to get in a premium defender (Bellerin or someone from Chelsea). That would be my choice.

      1. GE
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 11 months ago

Thanks for advice! Did Siggy -> Alli. Would you do Cedric -> Barnes for another hit? I can afford Cedric drop 0.1, but not Baines rise 0.1, and that will happen.

Lot of love for Baines at the moment. Everton have a good run and Baines is in form and on pens by the looks of it. He burnt me earlier in the season so I'm weary.

If you're gonna be priced out and you'll hold Baines for a while I don't see any problem taking a hit.

Thanks! You have many good thoughts! If I do Mkhitaryan and Cedric -> Baines and Coutinho for a hit in GW22 I wouldn't be priced out, but will loose team value. What do you think?

Baines is up against City and Cedric has Greta fixture, but have so far gave me nothing.

If I do Cedric -> Baines I'm on -12 hit. Would you then activate wildcard or wait?

Gotcha. But even then, as well as Mannone played, I think Pickford only lost his place because he was injured. If you picked him up for 4.0 then I would probably hold. But I'm not a fan of rotating GKs. So if thats your thing then go for it.
