Manchester United’s goal machine overshadows his City counterpart, who manages to overcome a bench role to deliver. Elsewhere Leighton Baines takes further strides towards our squads and the value offered by Jermain Defoe and Matt Phillips becomes almost impossible to ignore. Here’s the Stock Check following Monday’s matches….

On the Rise

Zlatan Ibrahimovic
While his second-half strike was clearly offside, Ibrahimovic converted the opportunity with the confidence of player who has scored five times in as many appearances.

The Swede has become a relentless source of Fantasy Premier League points, providing nine goals and four assists in the last nine Gameweeks.

Significantly, he’s also been rewarded with 17 bonus points in that spell and ranks top for that metric overall this season with 23.

While the debate on the optimum configuration of FPL forwards rumbles on, any solution surely has to lock in Ibrahimovic in this form.

The Gameweek 21 visit from Liverpool will provide the next big test but, following that, United’s fixture list continues to offer Ibrahimovic the platform to go on delivering points as he starts to edge towards – whisper it – “essential” status.

Sergio Aguero
In another rollercoaster of a day for Aguero, the Argentine overcame Pep Guardiola’s team selection to emerge from the bench to return a goal and seven FPL points.

A superbly taken strike, it was certainly a goal that suggested that there was more to come from the City man.

However, with Pep’s teamsheet sending early shockwaves throughout the Fantasy Football community, interest in Aguero has been tempered further.

Forthcoming fixtures with Everton and Spurs are also far from straightforward, with Guardiola’s men still struggling for fluidity.

With competition for spots in our forward line so intense and, with Aguero’s price tag a constant obstacle, his 21.5% ownership seems unlikely to spike just yet.

Romelu Lukaku
Another notable contender for one of our three striker slots, Lukaku was on target in Gameweek 20 with a goal of real quality.

Having earned a fortuitous assist earlier in Everton’s 3-0 win over Southampton, the Belgian fetched a fifth double-digit return of the season.

A visit from City is up next in Gameweek 21 but, with very obliging fixtures to follow, interest in the 9.5 priced Lukaku looks destined to pick up pace.

Leighton Baines
Now confirmed as Everton’s designated penalty taker, Baines took further strides towards our line-ups ahead of a favourable schedule.

With attacking returns in four of the last six Gameweeks and 11 bonus points over that period, Baines’s stock has soared of late, effectively ending all arguments on the preferred full-back option in the Toffees squad.

Tom Davies
Handed a first start of the season by Ronald Koeman, the lively midfielder earned a first assist to stake his claim for further opportunities.

With Idrissa Gueye now absent at the Africa Cup of Nations, potentially until Gameweek 25 or beyond, Davies may emerge as a short-term option as a 4.3-priced fifth midfielder.

Jermain Defoe
The Sunderland striker is a key reason why Aguero may struggle to turn heads.

Striking home his fourth and fifth spot-kicks of the campaign, Defoe moved to 11 goals for the season and to 113 points.

Significantly, that trails Diego Costa by just eight points, despite Defoe being priced 3.0 less than the Chelsea man.

Way out in front for points per million among forwards; Defoe now faces Stoke City, West Brom and Crystal Palace in three of his next four.

Vito Mannone
Somewhat exposed at Turf Moor in Gameweek 19, the Italian reacted by producing no less than 13 saves in the 2-2 draw with Liverpoo. That’s more than any other FPL goalkeeper in a single match this season, making him the only stopper to return four save points in a single Gameweek this season.

Accepting the batton from the injured Jordan Pickford, it’s clear that Mannone can also benefit greatly from save points during his run in the Sunderland XI.

The absence of key defender Lamine Kone may kill off any chance of clean sheets over the next five to six Gameweeks but Mannone has highlighted that he could still return points during this phase having fetched an impressive seven-point return on Monday, despite conceding twice.

Matt Phillips
The winger prolonged his spell of outstanding form with two more assists in West Brom’s 3-1 victory over Hull City.

Providing both from corner kicks, the Scot’s mastery of dead-balls continues to provide dividends and supplement his potential from open play.

Second only to Liverpool’s Adam Lallana for transfers in ahead of Gameweek 20, he is currently the top target following Monday’s returns.

Now ahead of Watford’s Etienne Capoue for points per million value, it’s difficult to build a case against Phillips’ acquisition right now.

A Gameweek 21 trip to Spurs will test his ability to deliver against sterner defences but, following that, the Baggies’ fixture list promotes his stock further with Sunderland and Stoke City their next two opponents.

Chris Brunt, Gareth McAuley
Another member of the Baggies contingent to deliver in the victory over the Tigers; Brunt stooped to nod home Phillips’ corner for a second of the season.

Meanwhile, McAuley was not to be denied. He headed his fourth of the campaign from another Phillips cross to further his stock.

The attacking potential offered by the Baggies pair is clear and, with the fixture list remaining kind following Gameweek 21, at least one of this pair appear to be priority signings.

Brunt, with his added potential from open play and dead-ball crosses, has the edge in our Watchlist rankings.

Robert Snodgrass
Despite suffering a stinging defeat, Snodgrass furthered his stock with a seventh goal of the season and fifth double-figure return.

Currently overshadowed by the potential offered by Phillips in the same price bracket, Snodgrass nonetheless has to remain on our radars.

An evil fixture list does cast doubt over his potential output over the coming five Gameweeks, however.

Hull City face Bournemouth in a vital home encounter in Gameweek 21 but follow that with ties with Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal.

Callum Chambers
While Middlesbrough’s skipper Ben Gibson remains the most popular asset in Aitor Karanka’s backline, Chambers, at just 4.4 in the FPL, is offering outstanding value.

Claiming two bonus points from Monday’s 0-0 stalemate with Leicester City, Chambers has surpassed Gibson for clearances, blocks and interceptions over the last four Gameweeks, ranking second overall among all defenders for that metric over that period.

With uncertainty surrounding the Boro full-backs, Chambers is now our go-to option for a backline that faces Watford (a), West Brom (h) and West Ham (h) in their next three.

In Decline

Divock Origi
Jurgen Klopp’s reluctance to make wholesale changes to his line-up at Sunderland saw the Belgian omitted from the Liverpool XI for the second successive match.

Despite having just two days between fixtures, the Liverpool manager opted to start Daniel Sturridge up top away to Sunderland, with Origi afforded just 18 minutes off the bench, adding to his 27-minute sub appearance against Man City on New Year’s Eve.

With the Reds now set to play six more times in January – including a pair of EFPL Cup semi-final clashes against Southampton – Origi’s role as a regular now looks very much in doubt.

In saying that, Sturridge did limp off with an ankle injury, while Sadio Mane is now away at the Africa Cup of Nations, which may yet hand Origi a reprieve – particularly if Philippe Coutinho fails to return from an ankle injury for Gameweek 21.

Nonetheless, Klopp’s teamsheet has already had a significant impact and earn Origi 17,000+ transfers out – more than any other forward in the Gameweek.

George Friend
On New Year’s Eve, away to Manchester United, the Middlesbrough full-back was handed a first start since Gameweek 11 as Antonio Barragan sat out a one-match ban.

Friend immediately dropped back to the bench at home to Leicester yesterday, only to then earn minutes after the Spaniard was forced off with injury during the first-half.

Yesterday’s goalless draw was ‘Boro’s fourth clean sheet in their last six home matches, with only Chelsea and Liverpool breaching their backline over that run.

With a trip to Watford preceding back-to-back visits from West Ham and West Brom, Aitor Karanka’s defensive regulars could go on providing us with a steady source of returns.

While ever-present Gibson is the obvious route, both Chambers and Fabio – at 4.4 apiece – now seem far more reliable options than Friend, who continues to look a peripheral figure in Karanka’s plans.

Kevin De Bruyne
While Aguero owners were relieved with his goal off the bench, De Bruyne’s fall from Fantasy favour shows no sign of abating.

Despite playing the full 90 minutes against Burnley, the Belgian served up a third straight blank and has now managed a mere two assists in the last eight rounds of fixtures.

Team-mate Raheem Sterling, meanwhile, has scored or assisted in four of the last five.

Without a goal since Gameweek 5, De Bruyne now sits level with Hull City’s Snodgrass on 94 points and with winter wildcards now in play, that 10.6 price tag is sure to see his 8% ownership look elsewhere for value.

Nacer Chadli
Hauled off just after the hour-mark in West Brom’s 3-1 comeback win over Hull, the summer signing has now failed to produce any points since Gameweek 8.

With Phillips delivering consistently, Chadli has now dropped to a mere 1% ownership ahead of a trip to former club Spurs.

Although the schedule picks up from Gameweek 22, the Belgian will struggle to earn our attentions, with James Morrison strengthening his claim for a return to the first XI by netting for the hosts – a third goal in his last nine appearances.

Furthermore, should Allan Nyom succeed in his attempt to quit the Africa Cup of Nations, Chadli could well be back on bench-warming duties, allowing Chris Brunt – who started as a left-back yesterday – to occupy the right wing berth once again.

Andy Carroll
Considering his injury history, it was perhaps no real surprise to see the West Ham striker warm the bench against Manchester United, just two days after playing from start to finish away to Leicester.

Limited to just 22 minutes against the Red Devils, Carroll failed to add to his run of two goals in six appearances at a time where some Fantasy managers were considering his services ahead of a fine run of fixtures.

A Gameweek 21 home encounter with Palace certainly bodes well, but Slaven Bilic’s teamsheet served a timely reminder that Carroll’s acquisition doesn’t come without risk – even when he’s fully fit and available for selection.

    As we've been speaking about press conferences.....Mourinho = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myRR3f1a4lw

Thought it was quite interested that when he was asked about how good Rashford's impact has been he straight away said, "Rashford and Mata". Maybe they do get on better these days 🙂

I'm not sure there ever was a problem on any level other then the professional. And those problems turn up all the time between almost every player and their coach as the dynamics needed changes throughout a season. Plus Mou/Chelsea got a pretty penny when they sold him. But it is nice and comforting to hear them talk about eachother with joy and without bitterness, recent resaults help out also of course.

The thing I really love this season is that Mou seem to have found a good way to fit Herrera in.

      And of course ZLATAN!!!

Think its finally time for Firmino to go. Also want to get rid of Carroll who should I go for.

Was thinking of getting Lallana and Defoe in.

Chadli's place at risk from Robson-Kanu IMO. Rondon will be a good option for WBA next week as he is a work horse up front who puts himself about.

With Chadli it's goals. With Phillips it's assists, especially from set pieces (which WBA are expert at converting). Phillips' points are therefore more likely to be spread (consistent). Chadli will get big weeks and blanks.

I am pretty sure that Chadli is worth a 0.3 differential in price. The only reservation is gametime because Morrison is hard to leave out all the time. But I'm quite confident that Chadli will out-score Phillips over the next 6-8 games nevertheless.

It's a very similar comparison to Alli and Eriksen in actual fact. A few weeks ago, when I said I preferred Alli (and got him in) it met with some bewilderment and a little scorn. But Alli is the one that has the greater goal threat and in the long run that's what will usually win out.

Perhaps. I'll review the underlying stats and fixture list in more detail before I make a move but gut feel is that Defoe is more reliable (probably in part due to recency bias but he's had the edge for most of the season and Benteke's penalty nonsense concerns me).

By the way, apropos of nothing I caught a post from you the other day suggesting that your defenders need to earn 5+ ppg to get a good rank. What stats is that based on as I don't think I've ever come close to that!

            1. Ruth_NZ
              • 10 Years

Last 2 seasons I used gargatron to look at the top 100 teams at the end of the season in some detail.

The outstanding difference between those teams and mine (I finished 12k and 3k) was average defender PPG. The majority of them beat 5 PPG over the season, some by quite a bit. I found that my team had pretty much matched (or got close to) the top 100 on everything else but was way off on that.

In my opinion, defender PPG is more important than captaincy. The best teams get around 7 PPG from captains, if you undershoot that and get 6 PPG it's a gap of 38 points. Getting in the district on captaincy isn't that hard to do, following the poll will probably achieve that for you if you want to go that way. But if you undershoot defender PPG by a similar amount it's a gap of 114 points.

Defenders are the most under-valued component of FPL teams in my view. Especially on FFS where the current fashion is to be utterly bedazzled by the cosmetic and "explosive" (bah!) attractions of big name attackers.

Hmm, interesting. I have my full points history from 2014/15 when I got my best ever rank (63rd) so I think I'll analyse my PPG and check. Gut feel is that I didn't get close to 5ppg though.

I didn't skimp on defence either, I know I had Terry all season and periods with at least one of Baines/Bellerin/Clyne, etc. Maybe I'm just crap at picking the right ones!

do you prioritize CSheets over assist/goal potential?
I tend to look for cheaper clean sheets and steady points. e.g. Jones over Valencia, Mustafi over Bellerin

I don't have a rule - it depends on my budget and priorities at the time. For instance I have Evans instead of Brunt/McAuley (which isn't working out too well!) but Alonso was the first Chelsea defender I picked because of his attacking threat.

Hey, I'm not saying that I am any good at it! It is very difficult, especially this season when the amount of CSs has been down (especially in the first 8-10 weeks or so).

I think for predictable PPG from defenders this season you have to pay for it, you need defenders with clean sheet potential plus either attacking or BP potential as well.

Coleman, Baines, VVD, Bellerin, Alonso, Azpi, Valencia, Dann... those are the kinds of defender I think could do well with upcoming fixtures. Brunt as well, of course, but he's a bit cheaper. People can mention players like Aké but he's not going to continue his spate of goals. He's a very good rotation defender but I can't see him getting near 5 PPG between now and the end of season if you play him every week.

Ok, so my vital statistics from 14/15:

                Total Goalkeeper Points: 144
                Goalkeeper PPG: 3.79
                Total Defender Points: 527
                Defender PPG: 4.36
                Total Midfield Points: 807
                Midfield PPG: 5.38
                Total Forward Points: 629
                Forward PPG: 5.77

I marginally outscored your suggested captaincy score (588 captaincy points = 15.47 PPG or 7.74 pre-doubling) but as you point out that's of less importance.

Guess I had a freak season (in many ways!)

                  8 years, 11 months ago

Yeah, that captaincy number is very high, you will have beaten many of your top 100 rivals by 30-40 points on that I guess. So maybe that is compensating for a lower than typical defender PPG (for the top 100).

But hey, 4.38 isn't bad by any stretch. It was certainly better than I managed that season. And earlier this season I was on 2.7 PPG from defenders, that's how bad it got! That was what caused me to re-think my whole structure because it was apparent that the 'standard' 3-4-3 didn't (doesn't) fit the price/performance landscape so well this season.

Yes, I think the question is whether come the end of the season the top 100 ppg distribution will be as per previous seasons or whether the defender ppg will generally be lower. Over a long enough period everything evens out but 38 games isn't actually that long to remove anomalies (see Leicester).

Sure, the shape may change a bit, the amount of CSs has been creeping down for 3 seasons or so now.

I am nevertheless convinced that improving defender PPG is a key way to climb the OR. It may not be that 5 PPG is attainable this season. But 2.7 PPG sure as hell won't win you any prizes. 😕

In my thinking, the trick is to settle with 3 premiums to cover captaincy and spread the budget more evenly. All this CIA stuff is folly in my view, the focus should be on the whole team's performance, not on whether you are going to miss the odd haul from Aguero (for example).

I'm not convinced it's folly entirely but those 3 have to perform spectacularly well for it to outperform a well put together balanced team. My problem is putting that team together well! I'm at the other end of the spectrum in terms of budget spread currently though so I'm giving it a go 🙂

Just checked out my squad from GW20 in my glory season (14/15) and it was very light up front (price wise at least). I remember Aguero being injured that Christmas which explains it in part but there's merit in bucking the trend sometimes:

                        Guzan, Gilks
                        Baines, Terry, Skrtel, Zabaleta, Cresswell
                        Sanchez, Hazard, Toure, Sigurdsson, Boyd
                        Kane, Bony, Austin

Maybe, a lot of managers are playing FPL in a very short-term way and with little discrimination.

City at Goodison isn't a bad fixture at all for Lukaku. It may be a tough game for Everton to win. It isn't a tough game for them to score in.

I bought at 9.4m anyhow so it doesn't bother me either way.

  8. FFS Terminology in Real Life
    ᶠᶦˡᵗʰʸLucre $$$

In response to the post about FFS terminology..... http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/01/02/the-knee-jerk-gameweek-20/?hc_page=22#hc_comment_14794439

........have come up with some real life examples of when FFS terminology can be applied in the real world........

OOP - When someone empties the dishwasher and puts the spoons and forks in the incorrect vice-versa segment of the cutlery drawer
Enabler – Not having a starter or dessert so you have the money to purchase more wine instead
Essential – Wine when the kids have gone to bed
DGW – When you are doing some lengthy home improvements (e.g. redoing the bathroom) in the evenings whilst having no time off of work
Big Hitter – A drain on your bank account, e.g. when the wife suggests “a new car would be nice”
Differential – Deciding to have a cup of coffee rather than a glass of wine (though it never works out like you hoped)
Kneejerk – Having an argument with the wife and deciding you don’t want to speak to her. Works out badly if you then remember your shirts haven’t been ironed and so then have to do them yourself
TC – Suggesting a threesome (only to be suggested once a year, and never works out like you hoped)
BB - Suggesting using some “toys” in the bedroom (only to be suggested once a year, and never works out like you hoped)
AOA - CENSORED (but it is only to be suggested once a year, and never works out like she hoped)
WC – When you go weekly shopping and buy nice Christmas food, rather than the same rubbish you buy every other week of the year
Troll – The puffy red-eyed face you see in the mirror first thing in the morning after last night’s wine
ITB – The money in your bank account – usually a minus figure (thanks to your wife and kids)
FT – When you think of someone else in bed
Fodder – Token vegetables you eat to make it look like you are making an effort to eat vaguely healthy (e.g. sweetcorn)
    Nailed - CENSORED

Ideal team IMO - probably unaffordable though except to those with £106.5m+ value teams:

    Heaton - Grant
    Baines - Jones - Brunt - Alonso - Ake
    Sanchez - Hazard - Alli - Lallana - Phillips
    Aguero - Ibrahimovic - Barnes

Think it is a well balanced team for attacking coverage:

Everton (Baines), Arsenal (Sanchez), Chelsea (Hazard), Spurs (Alli), Liverpool (Lallana), WBA (Phillips), City (Aguero), Man Utd (Ibrahimovic).

Basically have some of the best attacking players for the top 8 teams in the PL. That will serve you well over the second half of this season.

So Hazard's next two are meh and Aguero's fixtures are better? The logic I see here sometimes is weird. Trying to justify selling Hazard as being poor value for money yet still see Aguero as good value for money. The guy who isn't even guaranteed starts in the really plum home games you brought him in for. And his next two are actually bad fixtures. One more slip for City in the next 2 and Pep will start being realistic and shift his focus on CL and ensuring top 4 spot.

leceister,HULL,liverpool,ARSENAL and then the ticker goes all blue for Chelsea for 6 GWs. In the next two, Chelsea can easily score 7-8 goals. Leceister are rubbish and Hull are beyond rubbish (Chelsea will probably score 4 or 5 against them). You will need a huge sofa if you don't have Hazard for the home game against Hull. Liverpool and Arsenal are meh fixtures but not exactly that solid defensively either. Liverpool always concede, Arsenal bottle it in big games. Chelsea are flying high and have the confidence to score against any team.

Personally I wouldn't sell Hazard at all unless he gets injured or Conte changes the formation again which is virtually impossible. Hazard is the easiest captain to nail in the game. He plays for the best team in the league offensively and defensively. He is a flat track bully especially at home. Very easy to predict his hauls. And very easy to avoid his blanks. What more do you want?

I'm keeping until Hull and selling afterwards

Let me down twice when I captained him at home, so probably a bit biased there. But think Costa and Hazard is a bit too much with Alli and Coutinho emerging on the scene as well. Can't have them all I guess.

Yea I'm planning to get him in after the Chelsea game.

          Gw 21: Save
          Gw 22: Eriksen + Holebas + Origi --> Phillips + Brunt + Lukaku
          Gw 23: Hazard --> Alli
          Gw 24: Jrod --> Coutinho

But of course, we all know that those kind of plans almost never go through, wanted Brunt for like 5 weeks ago, but an injury in my team always ruined that plan

I wouldn't really say you need a new one... Bellerin is all you need.

      Wouldn't you just use Bellerin?

Walker has better stats than Bellerin. Quite stupid if you ask me.

Who do you prefer for the next 5-6 fixtures? Bellerin, Baines or Brunt? Money not a problem. All have great fixtures. Considering bellerin for the next 3 then jumping on Baines train for his Bournemouth home game.

Hard to call. A defender on pens with great fixtures coming up are too good go ignore though. Don't like swapping between defenders in short term.

Cedric -> Brunt or wait and see how Cedric plays?
