Olivier Giroud continues to deliver Arsenal’s “plan B”, while Charlie Daniels closes on the big-hitters in defence with further attacking returns. Meanwhile, at Selhurst Park, Wilfried Zaha departs and a crocked Christian Benteke blanks once again.

Here’s the Stock Check following Tuesday’s three Gameweek 20 encounters…

On the Rise

Olivier Giroud
The Frenchman’s extraordinary festive period concluded with another notable performance and Fantasy Premier League returns – a 15-point tally representing his biggest haul of the campaign.

Making a third successive start leading the Arsenal attack, Giroud assisted his side’s first two goals then grabbed a dramatic at-the-death equaliser to earn the Gunners an unlikely point.

Interest in Giroud had peaked heading into Gameweek 20, with more than 38,000 FPL managers recruiting him ahead of the Vitality Stadium visit.

At the time of writing, almost 30,000 have jumped aboard following Tuesday’s haul – only Jermain Defoe has attracted more interest among strikers.

Although he has racked up four goals and two assists in those three starts, Giroud’s pitch time remains uncertain.

Arsene Wenger has acknowledged that he will rotate his attacking resources according to opponent and, should Theo Walcott return for the Gameweek 21 visit to Swansea City, an approach based on pace on the break could arguably be seen as more effective in South Wales.

Alexis Sanchez
The Chilean has now notched 13 times this season, already matching his overall total from 2015/16 in 10 fewer starts.

But despite delivering for the 12.3% who trusted him with the Gameweek 20 armband, Sanchez’ level of involvement and goal threat in last night’s encounter raised concerns.

Stationed on the left flank with Aaron Ramsey occupying the right wing, the former Barcelona man scored with his only effort on target and mustered three attempts on the night.

With Giroud leading the line at the Emirates, Sanchez had amassed 17 attempts over the previous two matches against West Brom and Palace.

Given the reliance on goals away from home to this point (10 of his 13 strikes have arrived on the road), a drop off in the Sanchez goal threat when deployed on the flank would be an alarming trend.

Charlie Daniels
The Bournemouth left-back went into Tuesday’s encounter having created more chances and earned more assists than any other Cherries asset since the start of last season.

He more than lived up to that reputation by providing another assist, while claiming a third goal of the campaign.

The 11-point return gave Daniels back-to-back double-digit scores and ensured that he immediately flashed on the radar of FPL managers.

Only Everton’s Leighton Baines has enjoyed more transfer traffic ahead of Gameweek 21.

There are caveats when considering Daniels, however.

Bournemouth offer cheaper options – most notably Chelsea loanee Nathan Ake, who has three goals to his name in eight starts.

In addition, while Eddie Howe’s men had previously shown resilience on home turf, they have now shipped two or more goals in four of their last five at the Vitality Stadium.

Nonetheless, with a trip to struggling Hull City up next and both Crystal Palace and Watford due on the South Coast as the next visitors, Daniels presents a strong option for those willing to allocate 5.2 of their budget.

Junior Stanislas, Ryan Fraser
Overshadowed by the performance of Daniels on the night, Stanislas was still an impressive source of creativity and threat for Howe’s men.

Making a second successive start, his season has been interrupted by injury which sidelined the winger from Gameweeks 15-17.

However, if you track his output back to Gameweek 6, Stanislas is revealed as a hugely efficient value asset.

His assist for Daniels’ goal on Tuesday took him to six in his last nine starts, with three goals and six bonus points also arriving in that spell.

A key figure on set-pieces for Bournemouth, given their next three fixtures, the winger appears to be a canny alternative to West Brom’s Matt Phillips and a potential solution for those holding the now AFCON bound Wilfried Zaha.

Ryan Fraser is also worth a mention here.

A goal and assist took his tally to three strikes and as many assists in his last five appearances, though the Scot’s security of starts is perhaps more in question than Stanislas’.

Forced off with a knock last night, Fraser – at just 4.8 in FPL – could also be one to monitor, though with an average of 5.3 points per match, it’s Stanislas who remains our go-to Bournemouth attacking option for now.

Peter Crouch
Making a third consecutive start, the target man scored for successive matches for the first time since February 2015.

Priced at 4.7, Crouch has suddenly emerged as another option in attack for those considering a 3-5-2 approach.

Along with Burnley’s Ashley Barnes (4.5), he represents a replacement for the hamstrung Victor Anichebe at a time where the likes of Wilfried Bony and Mame Biram Diouf’s departure to the African Cup of Nations limits the Potters’ options up top.

Lee Grant, Eric Pieters
With a permanent deal from Derby County now imminent, Grant returned a sixth clean sheet of the season to further promote his stock in the light of Jordan Pickford’s recent injury.

Stoke City’s forthcoming fixtures could be kinder, though, and, now costing 4.4, there are arguably alternatives to the Potters’ stopper – Darren Randolph, Wayne Hennessey (or Steve Mandanda) and Vito Mannone are all identically priced or cheaper than Grant at this point.

Meanwhile, Pieters extended his lead as the choice option among Mark Hughes’ defensive options.

Deployed at left wing-back, the Dutchman picked up a single bonus point in Tuesday’s victory and, at 4.5, remains the cheapest route into the Potters’ rearguard.

Gylfi Sigurdsson
The Swansea City playmaker finally stopped the rot with his first attacking returns since Gameweek 15.

An assist for Alfie Mawson’s header also earned Sigurdsson two bonus points to help stave off the recent flow of sales.

Despite his recent drought, the key statistic remains: Siggy has scored or assisted 50% of Swansea City’s goals.

If the Swans are to be revived under new manager Paul Clement, there can be little doubt that Sigurdsson will be a major factor.

However, with Arsenal and Liverpool up next, the fixtures are hardly in favour of Clement or his playmaker.

Despite that, Sigurdsson’s dead-ball delivery will remain a key weapon against those opponents, to offer the patient among his 6.8% ownership the prospect of continued returns.

In Decline

Christian Benteke, Wilfried Zaha
It’s now five Gameweeks without attacking returns for the Belgian and with injury doubts now surrounding the striker, his stock is currently in free-fall.

Withdrawn at half-time, manager Sam Allardyce has confirmed that he will be sent for scans on a shoulder injury, having suffered suspected ligament damage.

Any term of absence would be hugely damaging, given that Benteke was about to enter a period of obliging fixtures.

Meanwhile, Wilfried Zaha’s stock is zeroed as a result of his departure for the Africa Cup of Nations.

He signed off with a spectacular goal – a reminder of his talents and worth to Fantasy managers.

However, with Ivory Coast the favourites for AFCON, he could be absent up until at least Gameweek 25, should his nation make the final.

With Zaha absent and Benteke potentially nursing an injury, the outlook for Palace suddenly looks far more bleak just three matches into Big Sam’s tenure.

Hector Bellerin, Gabriel
Arsenal arrived at the Vitality Stadium with back-to-back clean sheets accrued, indicating that their premium defenders may begin delivering.

But defensive frailties were exposed by Bournemouth, with Hector Bellerin – cited as a potential heavy-hitter option in our last Stock Check – culpable for at least one of the goals conceded.

As expected, Shkodran Mustafi’s return to fitness relegated Gabriel back to the bench, cutting out any budget route into Arsene Wenger’s defence.

Which leaves us considering Bellerin and Laurent Koscielny ahead of very strong fixtures with Swansea City (a), Burnley (h) and Watford (h).

Those two Emirates encounters appear to offer very strong clean sheet prospects, although Tuesday’s performance was evidence again of the uncertainty associated with the Gunners defence.

Fatigue could obviously have been a major factor, ensuring that Bellerin simmers as an option for now with his next three fixtures in mind.

Can i avoid wildcarding with this bunch? It's tempting. Not happy with the set-up of just one premium forward.

Both are good options, but at the moment it seems that it's either:

3-4-3, with three of Ibrahimovic, Costa, Kane, Lukaku, Defoe and maybe Agüero upfront.

But since there appears to be no decent strikers for less £7.7 million, 3-5-2 is a valid option as value can be found in midfield- Phillips, Antonio etc.

Do you think I've given myself a benching headache?

I got Rondon in for his nice run of home fixtures but then brought Alli prematurely in a knee-jerk fashion rather than someone who could rotate with Rondon. Rondon has SUN, STO, BOU, CRY in gameweeks 22, 24, 26 and 27 respectively

Many seems to saving wildcard double game weeks, but is it not a problem that if you change then a lot of players, so you do not get the old team then back again. And if the players values have gone up, you could sell only half of the price..

Sorry for the bad English, but you got probably my point...

Playing this for wk 33 on and you could cope - agree it is a risk though.

DGW's happen very late in the season, it's justified.

Just saw this on redit regarding the DGW's

The BGW's and potential DGW's of this season - the small possibility that they might not even happen this season

The weeks and the midweeks following each weekend
      Saturday of Weekend Midweek
January 7th FA Cup 3rd Round EFL Cup Semi Leg 1
      January 14th GW21 ----------
January 21st GW22 EFL Cup Semi Leg 2
      January 28th FA Cup 4th Round GW23
      February 4th GW24 ----------
February 11th GW25 Arsenal, Man Utd, Tottenham Leg 1
February 18th FA Cup 5th Round Man City, Leicester Leg 1; Man Utd, Tottenham Leg 2
February 25th GW26, EFL Cup Final ---------- (DGW Cancel?)
      March 4th GW27 Arsenal Leg 2, EL R16 Leg 1
March 11th GW28, FA Cup 6th Round Man City, Leicester Leg 2, EL R16 Leg 2
      March 18th GW29 International
      March 25th International International
      April 1st GW30 GW31
      April 8th GW32 European Quarters Leg 1
      April 15th GW33 European Quarters Leg 2
April 22nd GW34, FA Cup Semifinal ---------- (DGW Cancel?)
      April 29th GW35 European Semis Leg 1
      May 6th GW36 European Semis Leg 2
      May 13th GW37 ----------
      May 20th GW38 -----------
May 27th FA Cup Final --------
There are three conflict weeks here. The three are:
February 25th/26th: GW26 2 fixtures will be affected by the EFL Cup Final
March 11th/12th: GW28 Up to 8 fixtures will be affected by the FA Cup 5th Round
April 22nd: GW34 Up to 4 fixtures will be affected by the FA Cup semifinal
Of those 3, there is one huge problem: 2 of these 3 have the potential to avoid the BGW/DGW issue. The spots for a blank midweek are:
      GW22: open midweek, NOTHING known
GW24: open midweek, knowing the EFL Cup final on 2 weeks notice
GW26: open midweek, days after the EFL Cup final known on 5 weeks notice. Also know the FA Cup 5th round on 10 days notice
GW34: open midweek, days after the FA Cup semifinal known on 6 weeks notice. FA Cup 6th round known on 9 weeks notice
GW37: open midweek, knowing the FA Cup 6th round on 12 weeks notice and the FA Cup semifinal round on 9 weeks notice
There are more open midweeks than there are conflicting weekends. Here is the situation I see:
GW26: affected fixtures only shifted to midweek
      GW28: affected fixtures moved to GW37 and/or GW34
GW34: affected fixtures only shifted to midweek
the only way this can get averted is if the EPL decides to move all of the GW28 fixtures to either February 28th - March 1st or to May 16th - 17th. The first possibility has the potential to only have two GW37 DGW's for GW26 BGW's and the second possibility has the potential to cancel out any BGW and DGW.
Maximum potential DGW's: 14 (GW26 to GW24, GW28 to GW26, GW34 to GW37 would have to happen for this to be a possibility)
Likely maximum potential DGW's: 8 (only for the FA Cup 6th round, GW28 to GW37)
Likely DGW's: 6 (it was 5 for that particular weekend last year)
      Minimum potential DGW's: 0 (if GW28 is re-scheduled entirely)
TL;DR 1: There is a strong possibility the EFL Cup final and FA Cup semifinal will not cause BGW's and DGW's because of an open midweek right after the respective rounds. Decent but not great possibility of up to 8 fixtures of GW28 being moved into a separate GW to create BGW's. Also a possibility we might not even see a DGW at all this year.
EDIT: WHOOPS, Forgot the FA Cup Replays, but a heads up is that they do not apply to the quarterfinals now. The replays will likely be slotted as follows:
      3rd Round: Midweek after GW21
4th Round: Midweek after GW24, ruling out that GW as a potential slot for the GW26 matches
5th Round: TBD - See Explanation Below:
We are going to see either Leicester City or Arsenal involved in the GW26 BGW. This is going to involve either Liverpool or Southampton respectively. Likewise, we will likely see Manchester City vs Manchester United involved as another GW26 BGW.
Leicester City: have UCL involvement February 21-22
      Liverpool: no involvement
Arsenal: have UCL involvement March 7-9
      Southampton: no involvement
Man City: have UCL involvement February 21-22
Man United: have EL involvement February 23 and likely involvement March 9
      Hull City: no involement
      Burnley: no involvement
Unless any of them draw Man United or Arsenal draw Leicester or Man City for the FA Cup 5th round, replays will end up being separate. The FA is going to be far more reluctant to schedule EPL matches during UCL slots than they will be to schedule FA Cup matches during UCL slots. Of these teams, only Manchester United is in scheduling trouble if they make the EFL Cup final and have to deal with a 5th round replay. Last year, Arsenal and Man United both had Replays during European Slots as respectively they had no fixture and were knocked out by the time. However, because there were already limited slots for DGW's, I remember Everton had a DGW during the UCL slots. I do not see it being the case this year
IF Arsenal have a replay, it will likely be right after the 5th round
IF Leicester have a replay, it will likely be right before the 6th round
IF Man City have a replay, it will likely be right before the 6th round
Liverpool, Southampton, Hull, Burnley: it will likely be right before the 6th round
Man United: may end up forcing a replay the weekend of the 6th round or causing a DGW GW37.
Any other team will be doing their replay right after GW26
Things are looking all right up until Manchester United have to deal with a 5th round replay. IF they do not (and even then), there is still a strong possibility that GW26 and GW34 will not see any BGW's because of the open space right in the midweek

Best value in game is usually to be found in defence!

I think with some players (myself included previously) there's a kinda psychological aversion to spending on defence. An 8 mil striker getting you 5 pts a game sounds great, but a 6 mil defender getting you the same seems not as good...

What says you to these moves?

      Lallana to Stanislas
      Benteke to Kane

Eventually I'll do Alli to Coutinho when he's back.

      Leaves me with a front 8 of;
      Sanchez. Phillips. Stanislas. Alli. (Capoue)
      Ibra. Costa. Kane.

Delicious. Stanislas is a great pick over the next 3. Cheap as chips too.

A lot riding on Spurs mauling WBA though and I don't think they will. Reckon WBA could do them over actually.

See how Kane looks vs Chelsea though. Could be back to being useless - Watford are absolutely shocking and WBA aren't.

Did you have 2 FTs btw? If it's for a hit, I don't think it's worth it.

Any thoughts on Carroll, Firmino & Hazard > Lukaku, De Bruyne & Stanislas for a -4?

      Leaves me with:

      Heaton / Pickford

      Alonso / Evans / Barragan / Jones / Amat

      KDB / Sanchez / Lallana / Stanislas / Obiang

      Lukaku / Ibra / Costa

D is in form but has been unreliable before. Negredo has high ownership.

Under the heading 'Peter Crouch'; Barnes is 4.5m, not 5.5. Good value!

The Premier League’s likely winners and losers from 2017 Africa Cup of Nations

No mention of Nyom in the guardian article in acon. Just forgotten about him or did he manage to avoid?

      Sincerely
      Nyom owner

Probably omitted because it isn't clear yet whether he's going. No mention of Matip either, but that could be because he's injured. I've bailed on Nyom. He's going over there to argue his case but I can't see them letting him fly back, TBH.

Yeah I did, but I took a punt on KdB (c) that failed... my tale of woe continues, G 🙁

Mind taking a look at my team when you get a chance and giving a brother a hand? haha

He's elected to pull out of the competition but Cameroon are forcing him to go, threatening bans, fines etc. So looks like he'll turn up to the training camp to avoid the sanctions but there's no way they can force him to play against his will. He may leave before the tournament starts.

I suppose that's possible. It just seems a bit desperate and last-ditch to me, actually making the trip over to plead his case. I'm just surprised he's even travelling if he's so set on not playing.

Sorry all, had work to do.

Thanks for the replies. I wish I could bail - have 0 itb and only 4.3 sell value - so I guess I'm going to hope he isn't going to play for Cameroon and return to WBA.

Cabaye's rated 7.05 on whoscored quite good for a loser side

Does he really good / trying some through pass / key passes / crosses
      or the rating just "misleading"?

I had him for a few gameweek, keep or sell?
      Didn't watch the match.

What sort of wealth do these Chinese club owners have?

Way more than the oil tycoons at PSG/City?

The league is backed by the Chinese government. The Chinese president wants Chinese football to excel.

Billions of people in China - a successful domestic league there would be worth an absolute astronomical amount of money in TV, merchandise etc.

      Evening all. 🙂

      Team atm -

      Foster - Jakupovic
      Bellerin - Brunt - Mee - Amat - Lenihan
      Sanchez - Hazard - Sigurdsson - Philips - Carrick
      Aguero - Ibrahimovic - Benteke

      1 FT and 0.7m itb.

      Thiking Benteke+Sigurdsson ➡ Giroud+Stanislas for -4.

Leaves me 1.7m itb for Amat ➡ Baines the following week.Incoming players have great fixtures as well.

      Thoughts please.

I'm doing almost the exact same moves. Go for it! The hits will pay off and Baines next week is a season keeper.
