With 2017 upon us many Fantasy managers are looking to refresh their squad, as they look to steal a march on their mini-league rivals and climb the tables.

For some this will be via the second wildcard, which became available this month. For others a few hits or timely transfers will be taking place.

Already this week, festive fixture stars such as Tottenham’s Dele Alli and West Brom’s Matt Phillips are dominating the transfers in table.

But for this article I thought I’d take a look at some of those players who still have a relatively low ownership, of below 10%, and are being overlooked by the majority of managers.

As well as low ownership, another key driver for my selections is fixtures, with the schedule falling particularly kindly for Bournemouth, West Brom, Everton and Crystal Palace in January.

With that in mind here are five of the best post-festive differentials to consider drafting in for the New Year

Charlie Daniels

Cost: 5.2

Ownership: 9.5%

Next four fixtures: hull WAT CPL eve

For around a month now I’ve been urging Fantasy managers to consider Bournemouth defenders as key differentials. Slowly but surely some are cottoning on that Eddie Howe’s side is set up to get the most out of the attacking talent of the Cherries’ backline.

With two of his four double digit scores coming over the festive schedule Charlie Daniels has climbed to third in the Fantasy Premier League’s overall defender standings, yet surprisingly some consider his 5.2 price tag too expensive. With such a kind fixture list and a 2016/17 CV that features three goals and as many assists as well as bonus points on six occasions, he looks ideally placed.

A less explosive option but far cheaper alternative is Nathan Ake (4.4) who only has one double digit FPL haul this season, but has played far fewer games than Daniels. Indeed he has already matched the right back’s goal and assist tally and has a higher points per match average. For those looking for a budget alternative to Daniels the on loan Chelsea man looks ideally placed, especially since he is incredibly still in only 9.5% of teams and is among the game’s cheapest starting defenders.

Junior Stanislas

Cost: 5.1

Ownership: 1.2%

Next four fixtures: hull WAT CPL eve

I’m sticking with Bournemouth with my next selection of Junior Stanislas, who given he has a higher points per match average than Roberto Firmino, Matt Phillips and Mesut Ozil, is surprisingly still in less than 2% of teams.

Injuries have been an issue for the winger, who has only started 11 Premier League games. But when he gets the opportunity he takes it. Over those starts he has amassed two double digit hauls, scored three goals and registered six assists, two over the festive fixture schedule.

His 21 point FPL return at home to Hull in Gameweek 8 was particularly eye-catching. For those looking to invest immediately it is worth reiterating that the Tigers are his next opponent.

He also has form over his side. Over Gameweeks 19-20, when he made his first starts after recovering from a long injury lay off, he matched Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic for goal attempts and shots in the box and created as many chances as Red Devil Paul Pogba and West Ham playmaker Dimitri Payet.

Leighton Baines

Cost: 5.4

Ownership: 8%

Next four fixtures: MCI cpl stk BOU

Cast your mind back a few years and revel in the legend that is Leighton Baines. The indie-pop loving left back’s 2010/11 tally of five goals and 11 assists was just an indicator of his potential as a Fantasy asset. Overall FPL point finishes of 177 followed in 2012/13 and he notched 169 in 2013/14.

In his prime this Fantasy beast’s price peaked at 8.1.

Fast forward to this season and the sideburned full back is at it again, with two goals, two assists, as well as four clean sheets to his name across just 14 starts. In terms of points per match only Marcos Alonso can beat his 5.1 average among defenders.

Once the Manchester City game is out of the way he looks ideally placed to take advantage of a fixture run that goes into February too with encounters against Sunderland and Middlesbrough.

Penalties are also key to his selection in this list, after he has once again emerged this season as the Toffees number one penalty taker.

Chris Brunt

Cost: 5.0

Ownership: 2.4%

Next four fixtures: tott, SUN, mid, STK

With Gareth McAuley’s hefty 27.8% ownership his West Brom team mate Chris Brunt is being overlooked. This makes him an ideal asset for those looking to rise up the rankings. He boasts a higher points her match rate than McAuley and at home especially is a better prospect.

Over the Baggies last five home games Brunt has accrued 39 FPL points, compared to his fellow Northern Ireland international’s 18.

With home ties against Bournemouth and Crystal Palace in February, as well as Sunderland and Stoke visiting the Hawthorns in January, Brunt is another ideal differential for the New Year.

Yohann Cabaye

Cost: 5.6

Ownership: 1.2%

Next four fixtures: whu EVE bou SUN

Crystal Palace assets hardly endeared themselves to Fantasy managers in their 2-1 defeat at home to Swansea in Gameweek 20. With the Sam Allardyce revolution yet to get into its stride at the south London club their assets will continue to dip below the radar.

But if you believe that fixtures can eventually trump form then Yohann Cabaye is another kindly priced differential that your rivals are likely to overlook. After February 4’s Sunderland game at Selhurst Park, Big Sam’s troops take on Stoke and West Brom away and also host Middlesbrough.

With penalties still up for grabs at Palace the smart money is on the Frenchman snatching spot kicks, especially as he took them before Christian Benteke became number one following his move from Liverpool to the Eagles. Since then the Belgian has missed two.

Cabaye has also taken on a more attacking midfield role under Big Sam, topping the Eagles shots on target table since Gameweek 18 and scoring one of their two festive goals. In addition, along with Jason Puncheon, he has retained corner taking duties.

If Allardyce can effectively play the percentages in the New Year I believe Cabaye will be the key player to prosper.

As the text says - if you think Big Sam can do his usual trick of playing percentage football that focuses on set plays with a little bit of midfield flair then Cabaye is your man for their great fixture run.

        If you don't then avoid.

I fancied Zaha, had him and got his farewell points as well.
          Just swapped for Stanislas yesterday.

But Cabaye, I'm not very impressed, more so since he cannot play more than an hour.
Anyway, I will monitor for some matches to try and convince myself. 🙂

Thanks Jonty, some great food for thought.

I brought in Baines 2-3 weeks ago so very happy with how it has turned out, very nearly went for Coleman!

Not sure about Cabaye... I think you might be right but can’t take a gamble on him just now.

From Bournemouth I’ve got Adam Smith, should I keep the faith??

My top differential tip is KDB, could be a great differential if he hits form again anytime soon. Seriously looking at him!

I bought Baines back two weeks ago. Brought in Cabaye this week ahead of Philips, Zaha and Stan who were more player.

Watched the Palace game although he had a lot of the ball, he didn't get much forward. He wasn't very influential

      1. Pinky Blinders

Did the same for the Swansea match, unfortunately Cabaye looked far too deep too often. CP have some big issues to overcome despite their kind fixture run. I have swapped to Stan since Bournemouth also have good fixtures and he looks much more attack focused (and is cheaper, which allowed me to strengthen my defense).

Exactly this. I was at the Palace game frustratingly! Benteke got injured, Delaney stuck his fingers up at the fans at HT (never heard the fans boo the players like that before) and Cabaye supposedly offered to meet one of our fans in the parking lot after the game. Mandanda already wants to leave and just generally no confidence within the team. As Pink Caddy said, there are certainly big issues to overcome.

Zaha was a great shout the last few weeks and the most seemingly motivated on the pitch but with him now at the AFCON, I would stay well clear of Palace FPL assets for now.

Who do you think are in the top 5 total FPL point scorers at the end of the season?

      They are currently:

      Sanchez, Costa, Ibra, Hazard, Alli.

(What is fascinating to me is no Man City players are currently in the top 15)

This, the players at top are the same every season, some special entries each season. Aguero is going to be at the top come end of season, we just have to own him when he gets there. Same with de Bruyne for me.

From next week Bellerin has BUR, WAT, che, HUL. You couldn't ask for three better home fixtures for both defence and attack, and he's always in the the box or crossing it in.

I would leave your defence for now as you've got four solid picks (could even go 442 or 433 depending on the rest of your squad or rotate with 5th mid and 3rd striker).

that feeling of not really realising what you had until its gone is going to hit the gunners hard this summer. Sanchez is for me the best player in the premier league because of the desire that he brings with his ability. He can win a match out of nothing. I think the Bournemouth game showed him that Arsenal will go no further than they have done for the last 5 or 6 seasons. The glare he gave Giroud for wasting time with a pre planned celebration instead of immediately running back to the half way line after scoring could have cut steel.

      1. Pinky Blinders
        • 9 Years

Yes, he is clearly frustrated by the situation. I wonder if he will stick around if Arsenal bring in a new manager and another heavy hitter with a win at all costs mentality this summer? Ozil just seems like he has already made up his mind to go elsewhere. Both are 28, so it's now or never as far as titles are concerned.

Thats bang on for me too. He celebrated like he'd won them the league not rescued them a point. Sanchez deserves better than what's on offer at Arsenal IMO.

      Rondon anyone?

Great run of fixtures after Spurs. I have Brunt, Allen and Stanislas and figure Rondon is more of a goal threat than Phillips.

      Heaton (Pickford)

Alonso - Walker - Brunt - Holebas (to Ake next week) - Amat
Sanchez - Hazard (to Alli in 2 weeks) - Lallana - Stanislas - Allen (Phillips?)
Ibra - Costa - Anichebe (Rondon?)

Had Daniels for a while one of my best moves so far in a poor season, just got stanislas hope he does the same.
I think puncheon at 0.7% could be a good differential under allerdyce

Nice set of diffs there Jonty. I'd like pretty much all of those. Nice spot on Cabaye, I wouldn't have noticed his tweak in position and with pens in his locker he could be an option once again.
I'll throw Walcott into the hat. I cried when I had to sell him even though he was only ticking over and seemed to miss the odd plum fixture but with those tasty fixtures to come and maybe no space to bring him back, you just know what's coming next!

You can't classify Daniels and Baines as a differential with 9.5 and 8 percent respective ownership.

I agree with the Rest though.

I would like to add Townsend also to the fray...we know he is selfish and has a good left foot..when he regains his confidence he could be a good differential.

Thanks for this I really enjoyed the article, so refreshing to consider alt options out there.

I'm bringing Stanislas on board next GW then transferring out for Snodgrass GW26 if all goes according to plan.

I chose Ake over Baines this week but Baines will probably be coming in week after Stanislas. For Stan it's probably going to be Capoue out for a 3-5-2 or Hazard so I can upgrade Carroll to Aguero. Current team is:

      Heaton (Robo)

      Alonso, Ake, Brunt (Pieter's, Amat)

Hazard, Sanchez (C), Eriksen, Phillips (Capoue)

      Ibra, Costa, Carroll

      2.3 itb

Was going to say before I pressed enter too quick - any mileage in Toby Alderweirderleldleldeld? 9% owned and 6.3, was an offensive force for Spurs last year when he was playing regularly, which he should now he's back from injury.

I've had Daniels since GW11 and have been amazed that none of my rivals have picked up on his quality. Just brought in Stanislas last night and Baines is on my watchlist for GW22. Strong list. Will defs monitor Cabaye especially with Zaha absent, someone will have to step up so possibly puncheon and townsend both worth a look as well?
