With the hectic festive period now behind us, and with the Winter Wildcards available (and, for some, in play), we’re focusing on our refreshed Watchlist rankings over the next few days.

We begin our four-part series reviewing the current standings by looking at the options in goal.

The Watchlist is designed to offer a view on our current mid-term player recommendations, based on the prospects spanning the next four-to-six Gameweeks.

You will find our current Watchlist standings in your right-hand menu on the homepage on desktop, or via the fourth button on your right slide-in menu on mobile or tablet.

Second to only Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings, Burnley’s Tom Heaton remains our go-to option between the sticks.

Heaton delivered a nine-point haul against Middlesbrough in Gameweek 18, registering his fourth clean sheet of the season, while he still tops the charts for saves with 83.

The Clarets do face a mixed upcoming schedule, though, with clashes against Arsenal and Chelsea in their next five, which will likely see us relying on his save point potential.

But as a one-stop shop option in the sub 5.0 bracket, it’s difficult to overlook Heaton in the mid to long term.

With 20 points returned from saves and 13 bonus points accrued – seven more than his nearest rival – Heaton’s overall package remains convincing.

To put that into perspective, Manchester United’s David de Gea, as the most popular FPL goalkeeper with 34.8% ownership, has recorded six save points and two bonus.

Looking at that gap purely in terms of clean sheet returns, it would put Heaton the equivalent of five ahead of the United stopper, who has seven to his name, yet the Burnley man is still 0.6 cheaper.

Lee Grant now looks a hugely attractive prospect now that his move to Stoke City has been made permanent.

Mark Hughes’ side have kept two clean sheets in their last five matches, and face Sunderland, West Brom and Crystal Palace in their next five.

While Grant’s price has risen to 4.4 in FPL, that still looks to represent great value, given that Jack Butland continues to struggle with an ankle injury and appears some way off a first-team return.

West Bromwich Albion’s favourable upcoming schedule after the Gameweek 21 trip to White Hart Lane (SUN, mid, STO, whm, BOU, CPL) pushes Ben Foster up to third place on our ladder.

Whereas Heaton is the standout option for the Clarets, both Chris Brunt (5.0) and Gareth McAuley (4.9) offer ample attacking potential and are similarly priced to Foster’s 4.7, denting his appeal.

Also available at 4.4 in FPL is West Ham United’s Darren Randolph, who has established himself as the Hammers’ first-choice keeper on the back of nine successive starts.

The Republic of Ireland international registered bonus points in the 1-0 wins over Burnley and Hull City last month, has five save points in his last four outings and, with four favourable fixtures (CPL, mid, WBA, wat) in the next six, continues to enjoy a rise in stock.

Randolph also benefits as he offers the cheapest route into the Irons defence by some distance, with Angelo Ogbonna the next best, coming in at 4.8.

Favourable upcoming schedules also see Crystal Palace’s Wayne Hennessey and Bournemouth’s Artur Boruc enjoy a slight rise in our rankings.

While we’ve yet to see Sam Allardyce impact on the resilience of the Palace defence, he will now have more time on the training pitch following a busy start to his reign at Selhurst Park, which is expected to see the Eagles eventually tighten up at the back.

Palace, according to our Season Ticker, have the second most favourable schedule (whm, EVE, bou, SUN, sto, MID) over the next six Gameweeks.

The Wales international isn’t totally nailed on, though, with Steve Mandanda likely to return from a knee injury in the next few weeks, although the France international has been linked with a return to Marseille.

Boruc is slightly more expensive than Hennessey, setting us back 4.6 in FPL, but he has kept an impressive five clean sheets so far this term.

Bournemouth’s short-term fixtures (hul, WAT, CPL) look hugely obliging, with the Poland international expected to garner further defensive returns for his 6.7% ownership in FPL.

Like Foster, though, there’s obvious attacking competition from Boruc’s backline team-mates. Charlie Daniels has risen to third in the FPL defender standings and sets you back just 0.6 more than the Pole, while Nathan Ake – at just 4.4 – has notched three times in eight starts.

Middlesbrough’s Victor Valdes sat out Gameweek 20, missing one of four favourable fixtures on his schedule, with Brad Guzan claiming a clean sheet against Leicester City.

Even so, a return for the Spaniard at Watford in Gameweek 21 would still set him up for a favourable run of matches that would justify a modest 4.6 outlay.

Aitor Karanka’s side have a favourable run right up to Gameweek 32: only ties with Spurs and Manchester United offer stern tests in that period.

Middlesbrough remain resolute at the back, so much so that Valdes can struggle for save point returns: he has gathered points from stops in just two of his last seven Gameweeks.

Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet has taken his opportunity since ousting Loris Karius to the bench.

The Belgian has kept three clean sheets in his five starts but has gathered just two save points in that run.

At 4.7, Mignolet is the cheapest method of claiming cover in Jurgen Klopp’s backline, though Liverpool’s fixtures are certainly a barrier to investment.

The Reds face five of the top six over their next nine Gameweeks.

Having conceded four goals in his last two matches, and with difficult clashes against Liverpool and Arsenal to come in the next four, Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois remains towards the bottom of our ladder, along with Southampton’s Fraser Forster, who has shipped nine goals in his last three appearances.

Courtois still offers the cheapest route into the Blues defence at 5.9 but the gap to Marcos Alonso and David Luiz is negligible enough to edge us towards investment in the defenders.

Equally, Forster at 5.1 is more expensive than full-back Cedric (4.9), although he is undoubtedly more secure. However, with Jose Fonte filing a transfer request in the last 24 hours, we could even have Yaya Yoshida available to us as an alternative in the Saints defence at just 4.2. The Japanese defender has started three of the last four for Claude Puel.

I think you'd be better off saving the FT this week, and using 2 FTs to see how you are best going to 3-4-3 next week (or if you even still want to, given Phillips will have a much better run and Hazard will have Hull at home).

This week, Haz has as good a chance against Leicester as Lukaku does v City. And you could easily play 4-4-2 if you don't want to play Phillips.

I feel like saving is the way to go, its just Hazard who is going to drop and Stanislas to raise very soon... but maybe with TV of 104.8 I shouldn't care so much about it ?

absolutely, with a value like that you don't need to worry about it for the rest of the season really. right now the most expensive assets aren't getting much more expensive, so you're in a great position. Focus on points entirely and the value will follow: Haz price could easily shoot up next week and if it doesn't, he's still got a great fixture.

The problem with that I think is you've got a problem if Stanislas is injured or dropped/rotated which can happen. There aren't any decent replacements apart from Phillips. I'd maybe go for Defoe instead to give you a better midfield.

  17. Do you get defensive with your transfers?
    A.T
    • 15 Years
    8 years, 11 months ago

How often do you make a defensive transfer? Is it a last resort or do you like to upgrade the weakest link regardless of position? The reason I ask is I hardly do them myself as I'm always tweaking the mids and forwards as that's where most of the points come from. I'm thinking this is a part of my game I can improve on if I could find the best method to stick to.

    1. Ha.
      • 10 Years
      8 years, 11 months ago

Rarely do unless I have 2FT. Generally hold a few premium defenders who can be held for long periods of time and slowly notch up points. That being said, they don't seem to be as reliable this season. Still, always something more pressing needed to be done.

I think, especially in this part of the season, defenders are really worth tinkering with. While most points come from forwards, they are also less predictable - bringing in defenders for good fixtures has more chance of going how you expect it to. I brought in Daniels for a hit four weeks ago, which has worked pretty well, and anyone who has brought in Brunt/Ake/Baines will likely say the same.

I'll almost always move a midfielder or attacker first because it's more interesting

I do think we neglect defence somewhat though as FPL managers.

Not often enough, my last one was in GW15. Midfield and Forward bandwagons are the most appealing points and profits wise. Plans to change a defender often take the backseat after a big haul from a particular player or a bad week or desire to captain someone you don't have. I do have 2 planned in the next 2 weeks - hopefully I can stick by them

Did get a bit unlucky with the likes of Valencia and Alderweireld coming in and needing to be immediately sold so that didn't help.

I played with the same defensive 7 players for the first 10 GWs. OR: 320k

Changed 5 defenders including several hits between GW11-18: OR 850k

      I've settled on a solid back 7 since WC GW19: OR 450k

Conclusion: Find a decent back 7 and stick with it.

I think a lot of us would like to do Evans/McAulay to Brunt but can't or won't find the opportunity...in fairness the latter has served me well with goals (when not on bench).

Just 4 times in the last 20 GWs. (WC not included)

I only did it when necessary, e.g. Stones' form, Friend's injury, Smith's ban, and Pickford's injury.

do tend to tinker when I have a spare FT.

Don't seem to have the luck or patience when it comes to cheap defenders. Like those who had kept Holebas all that time and suddenly comes in for a return against Everton.

Do like to have 4 defenders so I can rotate.

Ruth NZ had some interesting stats the other day about defenders as a differential. Tend to agree that defence is too often ignored over mids/strikers.

I read a post by Ruth a few days ago about how important defenders are and I fully agree.

My defence has been poor all season. Had weeks and weeks of Cedric and Holebas contributing nothing. Alonso was a shining light in a pool of 1 pointers.

The mini league rivals that are beating me are all outscoring me in defence. Some have Walker and Daniels, some are even playing 442 or 532 on occasion.

You are not going to fly up the rankings if you have Zlatan as captain with Sanchez, Costa etc along with a rubbish defence. Most teams have those players along with a good defence,

      GW 2: Ivanovic > Davies
      GW 6: Cech > Jakupovic
      GW 7: Baines > Bellerin
      GW 8: Foster > Grant
      GW 9: Davies > Holebas
      GW 10: Valencia > McAuley
      GW 11: Bellerin > Fuchs
      GW 14: Fuchs > Cedric
      GW 15: Wildcard
      GW 17: Dawson > Friend

Of all those, only the Grant, Bellerin and McAuley transfers have worked out well. And the fact that I've stuck with Walker right from the start.

Obviously most non-WC transfers are going to be for attacking players, but the thing with ignoring defenders is that you become rather stuck with them, possibly regularly returning 1-2 pointers.

Because of this i tend to adopt an attitude of getting rid, even for a hit, if it looks likely to be worth it over a few games or more (ie mid to long term).

Recently for example i ditched Holebas for Brunt for a hit, this might seem obvious, but i know many wouldnt do it. I think a few judicious hits can be beneficial in defence but must be done carefully,

    17. Hochoki

I was conservative about hit this time, but after losing 550k OR, decided to take some hits to repair my backline as at that time CS was not that much available and i took fuchs ( who gave me 1in 3 GW) in GW11 when valencia got injured.

So I took -8 hit for bringing Rose (who gave me 42 for last 7 GW) for Koscielny(who scored 20 in these 7 GW) & Alonso(who gave me 35 for last 7 GW) for fuchs(who scored 14 in these 7 GW).

In GW16, again I took a -4 hit to bring Ake (who gave me 24 in 3 gws ,as he was unavailable in GW 18 against chelsea and benched him against arsenal this gw, which equals to 8 per gw) for williams (who scored 27 in 5 GWs after GW16, which equals to 5.4 per GW)

In GW 19, again I took a -4 hit to get Baines (who gave me 22 in last 2 GWs) for Holebas( who scored -1+1=0 in those 2 GWs).

So I dont think taking hit for defenders is not always a bad idea, though its a bit risky.

I've decided to put money into defense recently, playing four at the back (Bellerin, Baines, Walker, Alonso), with Evans my fifth. Do have De Roon and Anichebe but otherwise it hasn't really led to any sacrifices elsewhere as also have Sanchez, Hazard, Eriksen, Phillips, Ibra, and Costa

This sits alongside Jonty's article about bandwagon-chasing because they are two sides of the same nasty coin.

You will only make room for defender transfers if you are willing to have some set-and-forget options in attack and be patient with them.

Siggy was one such player for me, he stayed in my team for quite a long time. I just replaced him with Antonio because I am happy to keep him for the next 8 or 10 weeks and take his points when they come. He has done absolutely nothing wrong this season and represents great value for 6.8m.

That move settles my attack for a wee while and allows me to use my next couple of transfers on defensive upgrades to use the 1.3m I currently have banked. Unless injuries intervene of course. It's all a matter of forward planning.

I have become much more aggressive with defender transfers this season. If they are underperforming and there is an obvious upgrade, I will happily make the transfer, but I also am not letting an overpriced defender stink up my bench and use up valuable funds, so I have been packaging them along with attacker upgrade transfers for hits with more frequency. 25% of your weekly points potential (when including captaincy) can't be ignored.

Would be interesting to see how much more digital ink has been spilled on here over the midpriced or cheap midfield enablers versus defenders at the same price.

If they're not performing get rid asap, also in the first half of the season I want all 5 to be playing and increasing in value - obviously as the season goes on this gets less important.

Not enough obviously judging by the scores from my defenders the last while.

Early in the season there were no real scoring defenders but that has improved in recent times. My neglect has made me miss out on the recent various defensive bandwagons (e.g. Alonso).

Rectified it this week bring in Ake and Brunt for Cedric and Holebas so fingers crossed. On paper anyway and based on recent form, pretty sure Holebas and Cedric will punish me now 😉

I'll bring in defenders when they come into form/fixtures.

I'm finding this year I'm having GWs where everyone's doing horribly (20-30pt type weeks of which there's been a few recently)...but I'm still managing a respectable 50+ score.

And it's the defence thats rescuing me.

Which is odd, cos I'm usually awful at picking defences.

There's a lot of good/cheap attacking defenders out the at the minute, so you can almost treat defence as an extension of midfield, lots of wingbacks on offer.

Daniels, Ake, Brunt, the perennial Alonso, Baines, the Spurs two-some.

A lot of attacking returns in those...almost to the extent you can consider them to be cheap 4-6m midfielders with a 4pt clean sheet bonus rather than 1pt like an actual midfielder!

    A: Origi + Holebas -> Baines + C.Wilson

Nah from Jose interviews he seems as though he's been pretty professional, perhaps he's just not been used to not being first choice and hasn't used it as a way to get better? Mostly it's because when he was playing with confidence for brief spells with Van Gaal he showed glimpses of brilliance, but without confidence he's just not shining. I think with the right manager he'll be amazing, and whoever he goes to he could end up lighting up the league again
