Pep Guardiola’s first taste of FA Cup action is as sweet as it comes as his Manchester City side demolishes West Ham in Friday night’s third round match.

The now-annual test of how seriously the FA Cup is taken by the elite clubs began with West Ham and Man City fielding strong sides – and the hosts ending up wondering why they bothered.

The 5-0 scoreline in no way flattered Pep Guardiola’s side, who dominated possession but were also particularly dangerous on the break.

David Silva (8.7), Yaya Toure (7.3) and Raheem Sterling (7.7) all caught the eye for the visitors, while Pablo Zabaleta (4.7) was again used as a holding midfielder as Fernandinho (5.3) began his latest (four match) suspension and the injured Fernando (4.7) didn’t even travel.

The Argentinian defender raided forward frequently and earned the penalty that opened the scoring, with Toure given spot-kick duties ahead of Sergio Aguero (12.8).

Should Zabaleta be handed a run of starts in the role, he could be the one City defender that offers the potential for points beyond the occasional clean sheet, although the upcoming fixtures that Fernandinho will miss – Everton away, Spurs at home and then another trip to West Ham – aren’t the easiest.

More significantly, Aguero’s stock appeared to suffer another significant knock as he relinquished spot-kick duties to Toure.

The striker has 11 Premier League goals this season, with three arriving from the spot. Four of 24 goals came from penalties last season and five from 26 before that. Based on those statistics, Aguero could, therefore, suffer a 15-20% reduction in his potential goal output should Toure remain in the box seat.

Guardiola had previously removed himself from the decision on the penalty taking pecking order, indicating that the change in duties will be decided by the players themselves.

Notably, Toure has now scored all 14 of his competitive spot-kicks for club and country. The Ivorian scored no less than six goals from penalties in his outstanding 2013/14 campaign and his stock as a midfield option for this season is duly boosted by this latest development.

Aguero did at least notch for the second match running when he flicked home Toure’s shot just after the break.

By then, the match was done and dusted.

After Sofiane Feghouli (5.0) missed a sitter at 0-1, City promptly went up the other end and doubled their lead through a Havard Nordtveit (4.7) own goal, the Norwegian failing to keep out Sterling’s attempt to bundle the ball home from a superb Bacary Sagna (5.3) cross.

A third followed almost immediately when Silva tapped in Sterling’s pass following another fast and fluent break.

John Stones (4.7), recalled to the side in place of Aleksandar Kolarov (5.8), rounded off the scoring in the second half with a header – his first goal for the club – from substitute Nolito’s (8.5) corner.

The rout was all the more chastening for West Ham because Slaven Bilic selected such a strong line-up.

Of the regular starters available, only Dmitri Payet (9.1) and Mark Noble (6.2) were afforded a rest, although both were introduced at 0-4 by an increasingly rain-soaked Bilic.

The Hammers have a good run of fixtures ahead, even if they won’t fancy that Gameweek 23 re-match with City much, but they’re wildly inconsistent and are currently in one of their phases of looking lost as a side.

The only downside for City was another relatively anonymous performance from Kevin De Bruyne (10.6). The Belgian hasn’t scored in the league for 15 matches and frequently dropped deep in City’s fluid midfield set-up at the London Stadium.

West Ham XI: Adrian, Nordtveit, Reid, Ogbonna, Cresswell, Fernandes, Obiang, Feghouli, Lanzini (Noble 58), Antonio (Fletcher 72), Carroll (Payet 58).
Subs not used: Randolph, Calleri, Oxford, Quina.

Man City XI: Caballero, Sagna, Stones, Otamendi, Clichy, Touré (Delph 78), Zabaleta, De Bruyne (Garcia 68), Silva (Nolito 58), Sterling, Agüero.
Subs not used: Bravo, Kolarov, Navas, Iheanacho.

Those who are wildcarding atm. Are you going to play 3-5-2 or 3-4-3?

My wildcard team pretty much determined by Giroud. Can't see any other even half decent third striker atm.

if I decide not to have Gru I'll most likely move to 3-5-2

I'm not wildcarding, if I were, I'd get Giroud and play 3 strikers. Could consider 4:3:3 as an occasional option.

Wish someone would ask Wenger straight up if Giroud is playing every game. Wouldn't hurt if he eases Wally back into action, a month or two later.

basically a goal every 2 games (last season as well) @ 7.8m.

With yesterday's goal, Sergio Aguero has risen to 3rd in Man City's all time goalscorers list. He has scored 113 goals in 164 appearances.

      Choose on Wildcard:

      A) Hazard
      (lei, HUL, liv, ARS, bur)

      B) Erikssen
      (WBA, mci, sun, MID, liv)

      Money no issue.
If 'A' bringing in Coutinho will involve a hit.
If 'B' Coutinho could brought in easily when needed.

      Appreciate your thoughts!

You'd want Hazard the same week you'd want Coutinho i.e. GW 22, so I don't know why you'd be transferring him out other than for Swansea, Chelsea, Hull.

Does B just co sits of money ITB?

Yes with B there's money in the bank for Coutinho.
I have Costa & Alonso for Hull. I'm just not sure if should stick with Hazard or get Coutinho.

Personally, I'm intending to captain Costa and bring in Coutinho. No Hazard, but if I had Hazard I'd definitely captain him. The issues is, if you keep Hazard for that game, then Coutinho only has one good fixture in the foreseeable. So in that regard it's more of a toss up between Hazard and Coutinho. Unfortunately you won't be able to see how Coutinho performs as on WC, but I'd be tempted to keep Hazard now and just monitor Coutinho.

I agree with you but Triple Chelsea for these fixtures just doesn't seem right.

And if keep Hazard then I don't have Erikssen & Coutinho. Stanislas is my place holder for Coutinho he has some good fixtures but not for long.

And as mentioned below if there's anytime to own Spurs players it's right now as they only have PL fixtures. Once Europa Legaue starts we could see tiredness & rotation.

That assumes the manager concerned replaces him with Kane. The fact is that he has 12.8m to dispose of.

absolutely - was just taking the immediate example of Kane & 1.9m.
Or you'd could just take Defoe as the example and basically upgrade everywhere.
ATM with all the midfield options & a couple of premium defenders still a very strong case for 3-5-2.

It might be difficult as you'd have to take many factors into account.
But if he trounces Ibra, Costa, Kane & Lukaku I guess we'll have an easy answer.

Yes, i think arguably he has to exceed Ibra/Costa/Kane by 10/15% to be considered a success... Every time Pep drops him or gets him to track back that becomes a little less likely.

a couple of days someone put up the goals/min for the top strikers so far.
Carrying those numbers forward basically Kun gets another 16 goals until the end of season compared to Kane/Costa/Ibra getting 14/15.
Not an ideal stat to use as makes no allowance for form.

          This.

The biggest issue for me is that this season you can pretty much replicate his output for considerably less and there are cheaper captaincy options that are just as reliable this season.

The money saved and upgrades you can make while not losing out on captaincy
options make owning Aguero less appealing.

From last season Im not convinced.
I did use Bench Boost in DGW but had used WC much earlier, so just did a gentle 2FT on the bench.
I scored up there with a bunch of players crowing about a big score. Checking week before & after they mostly had lower scores either side due to skewed squads. Plus some of their squad were rested one game, against the weakest team so scored poorly with those anyway.
Not a big sample or scientific, but Im not banking on WC+BB to produce a 'massive' or 'casual destroying haul'

Planning Origi to Giroud, Hazard to Costa and VVD to Jones for this team. Any changes needed or is it OK. 2nd in ML 17 behind leader so not worried about hit. Bit worried about no Hazard but to do anything with Origi has to go and hopefully better team balance.

Allows swap of one of Spurs mids to Coutinho at some point and Giroud could be Defoe if not firing.

Alli+Kane = double up on flavor of the week

Cheers bud. Plan is to most prob take out one of alli/ kani after this gw. Got in Amat at 4.0 so might as well keep him as he might start a few games. Reluctant to get in Sterling cause of Pep's rotation. Avoiding Ibra as I need differentials in my ML to climb up the ladder.

Alli + Eriksen offering far better value than Kane for Spurs attack

I think Chelsea clean sheets will start to dry up...opposition attacking their defence more since their own attacking output has dropped off.

Zlat is the new undroppable ultra consistent striker, taking on what Costa was doing for the first half of the season...almost guaranteed 1-goal or 1-assist per match with baps.

Baines I'm really liking now...nice fixtures after City, got his pens back. I'm planning to draft him him after the City game.

...so on balance, yeah, I'd do it...likely to pay off

Which direction to start making moves:

      A)
      Heaton | Robinson
      Alonso | Rose | Evans | Ake | Amat
      Sanchez | Hazard | Coutinho | Phillips | Stanislas
      Ibra | Kane | Rondon

      B)
      Heaton | Robinson
      Alonso | Rose | Brunt | Ake | Amat
      Sanchez | Eriksen/Alli | Coutinho | Phillips | Stanislas
      Ibra | Costa | Rondon
1.9ITB (which then could be used for example on Phillips->Walcott or upgrading Rondon and another defender)

      C)

      Heaton | Robinson
      Alonso | Rose | Brunt | Ake | Amat

Is anyone playing their WC this week to improve team value?

Come into my mind as worked out I picked up +7 price rise last week (when including rises and falls), by jumping on Ali, Pogba and Rondon in the previous GK for a -8 hit. Had I not done it then due to my low TV (102.3) then I would not have been able to get them in today. Not only have hey have all risen, Ali at least twice no, but the players I transferred out - Siggy, Wally and Origi - have all dropped so I would have been even worse off!

Its a bit of a musical chairs approach, got to have the right players in when the music stops or could damage the team - and does assume enough rises in the next week to make ti worth it, but if I get it right could open up options for the future by having a higher TV...or is that a fool's strategy?!

      Current Team:

      Heaton
      Aké, Walker, Alonso, van Aanholt
      Pogba, Phillips, Alli, Hazard
      Ibrahimovic, Costa

      Bench:
      Foster, Rondón, Can, Amat

I used WC purely because my bench was either injured, suspended or called Anichebe

          Understandable!

Not sure if I am brave enough to do it incase it doesn't pan out, and then of course there is the issue of potentially missing out on a big Jan signing but not seeing too much on that front at the moment.

Cant really see many if any big deals being done this month so I wouldn't be too concerned there.

It's a risk and I'm still unsure why I played the WC in ways but I've done it now.

I found that a 3-5-2 with Anichebe was old hat and I needed to bin Haz as already own Costa.

With the 2 week break due to FA Cup I felt time was right to upgrade team and sort my bench which was stunk up with Amat and Anichebe

Interesting, thought if a lot of WC's would be played then their would be a lot of player movement which would trigger rises and falls. However my TV clearly shows how crap I am at predicting this!

WC for TV needs to be used with a couple of things in mind.
Rises start happening on the first game day - leaving transfers till after all the matches finish & you missed a lot of the benefit.
The maximum profit you can get form a buy/sell same week is 0.1
Mostly you will only get a 'profit' from a player held into next gw as well, so they need to be form+fixture longer term.

As below I'd do Haz > Alli as it frees up funds.

Llorente is tough in ways as it's the new manager effect and he could do well, saying that it's still Swansea. Pending on what funds you have to play with I'd be tempted to do Llorente > Rondon as he's cheaper and has nice fixtures. If you have a bit more to spend could you bring in Defoe?, good bet as a 3rd striker.

Hazard to Alki, easiest transfer ever.

Chelsea attacking returns not great...you certainly don't need Haz and Costa.

You have no Spurs attack currently...they're on fire and coming into nice fixtures.

You'll also pocket ~1.5m to invest elsewhere
