Zlatan misses out due to illness, but Manchester United don’t need him as they see off a spirited Hull City in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final tie.

Manchester United 2 Hull 0

United closed in on a February trip to Wembley courtesy of goals from Juan Mata (7.2) and substitute Marouane Fellaini (5.8).

The Spaniard is a frequently chosen one by Mourinho these days and yet his good form – he’s scored or assisted for four consecutive matches – is not apparent in the 2.4% ownership figures.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan (9.0) set Mata up before Fellaini probably put the tie out of Hull’s reach from a Matteo Darmian (5.0) assist.

Mourinho’s squad is sufficiently strong that he can sell Morgan Schneiderlin (4.6), leave Michael Carrick (4.3) on the bench and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.6) out of the squad altogether and still field a well-balanced side.

The Swede’s surprise absence was put down to illness, which, if not serious, was a timely one as United prepare for a highly significant match with Liverpool on Sunday.

His coach certainly seemed relaxed about it all – much to the relief of Ibrahimovic’s 43.3% ownership – when he spoke post-match.

“Zlatan is ill so I think no problem, I think he will be fine.”

Mourinho also gave the latest on Marcos Rojo (5.2) returning for the Liverpool clash.

“I don’t know [if Rojo will be fit]. Marcos has a muscular problem, not big. I’m not saying he’s not ready to play, I’m saying that I have my doubts.”

Marcus Rashford (6.4) replaced Ibrahimovic as the lone striker but failed to shine, leaving others to test the excellent Eldin Jakupovic (3.9) in the visitors’ goal.

The bargain basement keeper has remained in 19.0% of Fantasy squads despite seeing no league action since Gameweek 5. Under new boss Marco Silva he’s started the last two matches, although both have been cup ties.

If he is to return to the Fantasy radar, however, it will most likely be for save points alone. Much of Hull’s midfield is currently playing in an injury-hit defence that hasn’t kept a clean sheet in 18 Gameweeks and after a home match with Bournemouth at the weekend, the Tigers must face Chelsea, United, Liverpool and Arsenal.

Silva was able to welcome back Harry Maguire to his backline but still has doubts over Michael Dawson (4.4) and Curtis Davies (4.9) ahead of the Cherries meeting. Elsewhere, midfielder Markus Henriksen (4.9) is almost certain to miss the Gameweek 21 meeting after he suffered a shoulder injury in Tuesday’s tie.

Two goals should be enough to take to the KCOM Stadium, allowing Mourinho to rotate ahead of the second leg, which falls between a Gameweek 22 trip to Stoke and the FA Cup fourth round tie with Wigan.

Silva will be hoping to have added to a desperately thin squad by then, with Everton striker Oumar Niasse (5.6) reportedly close to joining them on loan until the end of the season.

Essentially, the result means that United now have one foot in the final, which will take place on February 26 – or Gameweek 26, to you and me.

Should the Old Trafford outfit progress to the Wembley showdown, it is near-certain that they would then face a blank Gameweek 26 – this is all the more significant when you consider they are currently scheduled to face neighbours Manchester City in the league that weekend.

Clearly, such a scenario would have repercussions for those holding both Ibrahimovic and Sergio Aguero (12.8), forcing us to freshen up our three-man frontlines, with both Manchester sides then afforded a double Gameweek apiece somewhere down the line.

Manchester United XI: De Gea, Valencia, Jones, Smalling, Darmian, Herrera, Pogba, Mata (Fellaini 79), Rooney (Martial 59), Mkhitaryan (Lingard 71), Rashford.
Subs not used: Romero, Carrick, Blind, Fosu-Mensah, .

Hull City XI: Jakupovic, Huddlestone, Maguire, Robertson, Meyler, Mason, Clucas, Tymon (Weir 90+1), Snodgrass, Henriksen (Hernández 19), Diomande (Maloney 74).
Subs not used: Marshall, Bowen, Clackstone.

A further hit required here? Few yellow flags and dodgy subs...

I'm keeping Ake until we know more. I actually did Alonso to Walker this week. Spurs can match Chelsea's CS tally, if not better it They've only conceded one goal more than Chelsea. Plus Walker has about the same attacking potential from wing-back too.

Yeah, as is Rose. They set up in a 3421 as:

            Lloris
            Dier Toby Vert
            Walker Dembele Wanyama Rose
            Eriksen Alli
            Kane

I went Walker over Rose for better Baps potential and Rose is 2 yellows away from a 2 game ban.

As a West Ham fan its a tad embarrassing, we're the 17th most valuable club in Europe ffs!

However, I can see what the board are doing, whatever we offered for Snodgrass we'd be told to up it. The rate we're going though it'll take us about 12 years to get up to a reasonable offer.

Even though Aguero has been in poor form he's still got 11 goals this season, and in just 1141 minutes.

              Costa has 14 in 1676.

Form is temporary. Aguero is the best striker in the league.

He's certainly in better form than Aguero so far this season, i'm not denying that.

But if you're judging players on form only, surely Deli Alli is the best player in the world?

I never even pointed Costa is the best in the league. I just showed a stat showing how he has the most involvement the whole year. But he is getting better than Aguero and under Conte is turning out to be a beast of a player.

Haha! My point is that the only reason Aguero is not top of the charts is because of his own ill discipline. He's still the best striker in the league

Yep, good point, if he played the same minutes as Costa, then he would have scored more goals i believe.

That his own fault + Pep when he benched him.

Yes, I definitely agree it's the manager. He is not using Aguero well. He just have to realize he is no False Nine and change his play around Aguero instead of the midfielders.

I think Pep is finally beginning to realize that.

Aguero still my pick to be top goalscorer this season.

I'm planning to get Coutinho back in next week for Swansea if he's looking sharp-ish...thoughts on this as a strategy?

      Heaton, Pickford
      Rose, Alonso, Brunt (Jones, Lenihan)
      Sanchez Eriksen Coutinho Phillips (Capoue)
      Ibrahimovic Lukaku Defoe

Could also keep Costa instead of Lukaku, but that would mean downgrading one of Rose/Alonso to a 5.0 DEF.

They don't need to sell him for cheap to someone like West ham or Swansea for example for whom he would be a key player.
Has experience in the premier league too .
Probably 15 mil they will settle but no point selling him even if he hasn't played in a year. Will come good as a rotation option over Klavan for sure.

Thoughts on Schneiderlin to Everton? Not an interesting FPL asset in himself, but curious on his impact on Lukaku and Everton CS potential. Everton have a nice run of fixtures after Man City, and neither of their GW 26 or 28 matches will be blanked because of the cups.

He is not a holding DM so Everton will be making a huge mistake if they play him there. Play him at CM as a B2B mid with a holding mid behind him and he will thrive.

        Should help Everton both ways
He can be a box to box or a playmaker from deep with more defensive duties if he has to, did both of that for Southampton in spells If im right.
United culled out his attacking potential totally, had quite a few goals in him too, expect to see that for Everton next season

Had Walker for 14 GWs and I like the guy, but Rose has more potential, that's what I'm going for. He's not gonna get a YC every game. With some set pieces now and playing as a midfielder like, I'm taking my chances.

Thanks for your input though. Appreciate it.

Is it the yellow card issue that has led you to opt for Walker over Rose ? I'm considering Ake to Rose in a couple of weeks if Ake is just warming the bench as expected. Rose looks so attacking at the moment and I feel like I'm willing to risk the suspension. If he gets another yellow against WB I may reconsider though !

Sounds good, but expect Origi to go -0.2m a week for the next gameweeks

Can pull the trigger on Sat but Origi will fall before then and that price drop does effect me.. could well be origi > defoe

My keepers are Grant and Randolph.

Column brother comment: "No point having Randolph. Jaku will do a similar job for 0.4m less."

I think Randolph playing Jaku not? So then I can use rotation subject to fixtures..

Which one of us is wrong?

Jaku has played the last 2 cup games so might be first choice again, but we should know after this weekends game.

I'd rather have Grant and Randolph and rotate though.

We're not sure on Jaku. Rumour is the new boss likes him and could get back the no 1 spot.

Grant probably only goes well with rotation , risky to trust him alone . That said Grant plus Randolph .
Hull are horrible but west ham can nick those clean sheets at home very unexpectedly .

Rotating grant with Jaku doesn't seem like saving 0.4
More like being extra miserly .

      A or B:

      A - Ake & Benteke to Chambers & Defoe

      B - Jones & Benteke to Chambers & Giroud

Who is the pick of the Spurs defenders? Is Alderweireld flying under the radar somewhat? Only 0.2 more than Walker and 0.3 more than Rose. Less likely to be rotated and not at risk of a suspension. I'd say Rose was the best option if he wasn't on 8 yellows but with that in mind I think I'm leaning towards Toby as my Alonso replacement when/if the time comes.

Worried about my GK/defence. Tried to spread out across teams as much as poss. Any suggestions?

      Randoph/Mannone
      Chambers/Klavan/FMori/Kelly/McAuley
      Sanchez/Alli/Lallana/Phillips/DeRoon
      Giroud/Costa/Zlatan

Not strong enough. I'd downgrade Giroud to Defoe and use the money to upgrade the defence.

I like it, balance is really good, arguably slightly too strong in defence but that's really where many are gaining this season. 9/10 gl
