The return of Philippe Coutinho is the only positive for Liverpool on a night when Southampton’s EFL Cup profligacy might well come back to haunt them.

Southampton 1 Liverpool 0

Nathan Redmond (5.8) made the difference but could have made so much more, as Southampton failed to put away a listless Liverpool at St Mary’s in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final.

The visitors managed only two shots on target from 68% of the possession, while Redmond alone had five goal scoring chances to make the second leg at Anfield considerably more comfortable than it is likely to be now.

The midfielder did at least convert one of those opportunities, finishing smartly from a Jay Rodriguez (6.3) pass, and was perhaps unlucky to see a late effort hit the bar.

Liverpool, meanwhile, had a major consolation prize to soften the blow of defeat as Philippe Coutinho (8.2) returned after a month and a half out injured. The Brazilian was given a 30-minute cameo and immediately rejuvenated a Reds attack in which Roberto Firmino (8.5) and Daniel Sturridge (9.7) were toothless.

Firmino has struggled hugely during his compatriot’s absence, scoring just once, losing close to a quarter of a million Fantasy managers and dropping 0.3 in value. The 11.6% who have stood by him will now hope for a return to the form – and “false 9 role” – that harvested five goals and as many assists in the first 11 Gameweeks of the season.

Coutinho is still found in 14.7% of Fantasy squads, but he may well be eased back into action just as Liverpool face a mixed bag of upcoming fixtures, with tough matches against Man United, Chelsea and Spurs tempered by a trip to Hull City and the visit of Swansea City.

The Reds also have an FA Cup replay against Plymouth Argyle to resolve on January 18.

Jurgen Klopp made eight changes to his weekend side, Claude Puel seven to his, with only Maya Yoshida (4.2), Virgil van Dijk (5.8), Ryan Bertrand (5.4) and Dusan Tadic (7.0) remaining from the Saints team that drew with Norwich.

Yoshida has now started the last four matches across all competitions and, with club skipper Jose Fonte (5.4) looking for an exit over the January transfer window, the Japan international could be one to consider over a relatively attractive run that involves trips to Burnley, Swansea and Sunderland and home matches with Leicester and West Ham.

However, Puel will surely be prioritising a replacement for Fonte should the defender be allowed to leave the club.

Elsewhere, continued rotation looks inevitable in the Saints’ squad as the fixtures continue to pile up. As well as their league commitments, they will have to replay against Norwich City on Wednesday (January 18) before the second leg of their Liverpool tie a week later and a potential FA Cup fourth round tie just three days after that.

For now, though, last night’s result gives them a slight advantage as they look to book a place at Wembley.

Clearly, the outcome of that second leg at Anfield will have major repercussions for FPL managers.

Should the Saints prevail and clinch a place in the final, their Gameweek 26 clash against Arsenal would need rescheduling and would almost certainly be moved to another Gameweek – something to consider for the 36.5% of FPL managers currently holding Alexis Sanchez (£11.9m).

If Liverpool can overcome that deficit, though, their Gameweek 26 trip to Leicester City would require rescheduling instead.

Southampton XI: Forster, Cedric, van Dijk, Yoshida, Bertrand, Clasie (Hojbjerg 73), Romeu, Davis (Ward-Prowse 82), Tadic, Redmond, Rodriguez (Long 82).
Subs not used: Lewis, Stephens, McQueen, Sims.

Liverpool XI: Karius, Clyne, Lovren, Klavan, Milner, Lucas, Can, Wijnaldum (Coutinho 61), Lallana, Firmino (Origi 83), Sturridge.
Subs not used: Mignolet, Gomez, Moreno, Stewart, Woodburn.

Boring one, but need to decide on Brunt, or Daniels long term.

RMT seems to favour the latter, but I've been trying to get Brunt in for awhile.

I think a Foster/Brunt double up could be profitable in the coming weeks.

What about if WBA sign Gabbiadini? Does this mean Brunt is no longer OOP? Will Brunt be first choice over Nyom at LB? Food for thought.

I'm pretty confident Brunt would be first choice over Nyom. Signing Gabbiadini would be disappointing.

He is mainly a center forward, dont see him challenging the allround contribution that Brunt brings to their build up play

In the same way Ake is a LB? From what I'm aware Gabbiadini is accomplished on the right side as well and I doubt Pulis would displace Rondon so for me I'd predict Rondon with a trio of Gabbiadini-Chadli-Phillips behind... regardless he's likely to take some of Brunt's direct freekicks away from him at the very least

Depends on the rest of your defence really. I'm going Brunt for my team due to better rotation with my other defenders.

Rest of defence: Alonso, Valencia, Friend, Amat.

Can play Friend this week, but I have Cedric who needs to go. My defence has been running on exhaust fumes these last couple of weeks.

Well I'd recommend going through the fixtures and seeing which one slots in best. Mine's not dissimilar, from memory I think Brunt will rotate best with those.

Because he seems to have lost his spot to Cuco Martina. He also played in the League Cup last night, so its likely he'll be rested.

            And last six GW's, he has recorded scores of 0, 0, 2, 0, 0, 1.

puel played his first team yesterday:

#SaintsFC team to face #LFC: Forster, Cédric, van Dijk, Yoshida, Bertrand, Clasie, Romeu, Davis, Tadić, Redmond, Rodriguez.

he misssed two of those six games because of freak injuries, and was rested in another two due to fixture congestion (along with bertrand). with no europe to worry about anymore, he should keep starting every game. his fixtures are still good. i understand the disappointment and rage transferring him out, but i would keep him.

I just don't trust Puel's rotation of FB's. I think he could come good over the next few GW's, but I think both Daniels and Brunt offer better options at a similar price bracket.

Agree with this. He is first choice after last night. Question is whether he is rested for the next PL game given that it's already on Saturday or if Puel rests him for the FA Cup on Wednesday next week.

Also, for a third defender slot, I need more dependability than Cedric, Friend and Amat. None of these guys could start on their chosen week.

Do I bench or play Jones vs Jose "Park the Bus" Mourinho ?
I also have Alonso & Ake (much discussed issues), Holebas (recovering from illness), Love (1 minute special)

So thinking A for a hit:
Play Alonso (Ake first bench as cover - surely 1 of the 2 will play)
    Holebas > Daniels (-4)
    Play Jones
Love can stay as my 2nd bench warmer in case neither Alonso or Ake play.

    OR

B: Hold Holebas until we know more about Ake/Alonso.

Mane to Stanislas. Stan's picked up where he left off after coming back from injury, and next three games are Hull, Watford, and Palace.

Itching to press the WC button. So many players I want... And so many I dislike having, with Aké adding to that list since he joined Chelsea.

Had Giroud all week on my wildcard but now not sure if he's too much of a risk and I should settle for Defoe..

I've had Defoe for ages, but I think he's been quite lucky with pens. Sunderland getting more than their fair share. Maybe keep the money aside to do Giroud to Lukaku if things don't pan out?

Why do you think he is a risk?

If Walcott is fit he might not start.

The ideal situation for me would've been fit and firing Walcott and Coutinho but their respective injuries have made life difficult 😀

Defoe has been an absolute gem for me this season. I was tempted by Giroud but I'm still not convinced he will will start every game and that's enough to put me off. Especially as that extra 1.5ish can go a long way elsewhere

For the money dont think Hazard is worth it
Great football player but not a fantasy option personally
I would try fit in Sanchez instead
