Last week’s runaway poll leader Alexis Sanchez (11.9) has the perfect storm of consistency, fixtures and form to remain another strong contender in our latest rundown of the most popular captaincy options.

Sitting in 37.4% of Fantasy Premier League squads, the Chileans’ last-minute penalty at home to Burnley means he has now delivered attacking returns in nine of his last ten league matches ahead of next week’s visit from Watford. The Hornets, like the Clarets, are another travel-sick side, having shipped 21 goals and earned just two clean sheets on the road.

Sanchez’ eight attempts against Burnley, more than any other player in Gameweek 22, also highlights that, in terms of underlying form, he remains a superb armband option. He’s now fired 25 attempts on goal in his last three outings at the Emirates Stadium.

Olivier Giroud (8.7), who ended a four-match scoring run with a weekend blank, offers a cheaper alternative from among Arsenal’s ranks, as does Mesut Ozil, who earned a third successive assist on Sunday.

With 12 goals in their last four league matches, Spurs’ attacking credentials are not in question. But with Harry Kane (11.1), Dele Alli (8.8) and Christian Eriksen (8.7) all at the centre of their fine recent run, the captaincy vote is likely to be split ahead of their trip to Sunderland.

Alli is the most popular of the trio, with a quarter of FPL managers currently owning the England midfielder on the back of eight goals and an assist in his last six.

Nonetheless, Kane’s six successful strikes and two assists over the same period will ensure he also garners votes, while Eriksen cannot be overlooked – he’s bagged six double-figure hauls in the last 10 Gameweeks.

Another popular candidate is likely to be Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.7), who like Giroud, handed his armband backers a rare blank in Gameweek 22.

The big Swede failed to deliver a goal or assist for the first time since Gameweek 15 as a result of Saturday’s result. Hull City’s visit to Old Trafford may provide the perfect opportunity for him to make amends, however, given that the Tigers have conceded 26 times on the road, more than any other team.

Team-mate Paul Pogba (8.5) could also prosper in that fixture. One goal from 15 shots in the last four Gameweeks suggests that the 11.1% owned Frenchman has been unlucky not to notch with greater regularity.

Among Gameweek 23’s most enticing differential options are Swansea City pair Gylfi Sigurdsson (7.2) and Fernando Llorente (6.1).

With penalty duties and a goal in the Welsh side’s surprise away victory at Anfield on Saturday, their 5.2% owned Icelandic schemer should attract attention when Southampton visit.

A clean sheet at home to Leicester City on Sunday was the Saints’ first shut-out since Gameweek 16, which will also give hope to Llorente’s supporters after the Spaniard’s weekend brace brought his tally to eight for the season.

Virgil van Dijk’s availability could be the key factor at play here, with the Dutchman sustaining an ankle injury in Southampton’s win over the Foxes on Sunday.

Liverpool’s home tie with Chelsea looks tough to call and, given the ease of Manchester United, Spurs and Arsenal’s fixtures, their key assets are unlikely to challenge at the summit of the poll.

For those who fancy the Blues to get the better of Jurgen Klopp’s side, Diego Costa (10.3) appears to offer the greatest potential for returns.

His strike against Hull was his 15th of the season and ensures he remains level with Sanchez in the hunt for the 2016/17 Golden Boot. Liverpool’s failure to keep a clean sheet in five of their last six league outings also strengthens Costa’s appeal.

The Spaniard has scored eight of his 15 goals away from home this season.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of next week’s deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

I like to think the Schiederlin effect (Although not starting yet) will make everton's defence even better. With 3 at the back, Then two of Barry/Schederlin/Davies and Coleman/Baines as wing backs it's fairly concrete set up. Makes attacking much easier and reminds me of when Martinez first took over when the back line was Moyes trained. This is the difference tho, Koeman seems to have both ends covered and Williams more confident as a leader. Also - Robles is in great form. They also offer best value (looks like Holgate is starting now).

My concern about Arsenal is their defence is unsettled. Mustafi looks great but don't rate Gabriel and Kosc took a knock this week.

Spurs are hardy. Without Vert I don't think as hardy as they were + expensive.

Started last 3 (inc FA Cup) *when* Everton play a back 5

But it's not clear if Koeman will change this and Holgate is first to go if he switches to a 4321 which he has against more defensively minded teams with less width.

E.g Stoke away - who are next up... I'd say if he starts this game, he's as nailed as anyone at bargain price - and would be a great 5th defender.

only if they play 3 at the back. For some matches they'll probably shift to 4 at the back, which would probably be coleman williams jags/funes mori baines.

Also, Jag's is being marginalised. It's become clear that he's down the pecking order. His pace is a big problem. I'm sad to say it as I'm a Blue and he's be great for a long time. But i can see him leaving this season. Hopefully won't be a free agent like Osman tho. (surely someone can fit in Ozzie!)

I see a lot of people getting rid of Haz, i wonder if it is bad move...

There is no doubt that he played bad yesterday, i watched the game and from begining it was pretty obvious that he will blank. Can't argue with anyone wanting to ditch him, but the way this season is going i have a feeling sellers will get burned.

Here are few arguments for keeping him :

    - those who have been patient this season usually got rewarded
    - he only needs one penalty to get double digit score
    - he is having a bad run, but still he is managing 5,2 pts/game (last 5 games), for example Costa have 4,4 pts/game in his last 5 games that he played
    - he loves baps, goal or assist is usualy enough to get a few bonus points
    - Haz was never a player who will get you monster houls like Sanchez, he is more a season keeper who will easily get you 200 pts
    - lots of CS points
    - transfers could be used better at this point (getting players with no blanks)

So, like i said i don't think it is bad idea to sell, but this season more then ever patience seems to be the way to go.

But how many times people got rid of a player just so he can get a big score and then bring him back (rember mass exodus of Sanchez for Haz or Kane after Hull and Bur, all of those who got rid got burned and brought em back)

I think hazard over the next 2/3 gameweeks will struggle, so I ditched to avoid price drops/ride price rise on alli and the fixtures for alli are better than hazards but I fully intend to get hazard back for Swansea onwards

I plan on captaining hazard in future there's 7 great home fixtures for him worth having him

      1. Rossonero
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 20 days ago

That is a good move...but with blanks incoming maybe those two transfers (ditch and bring him back) could be used on getting 11 playing in those weeks

Those are all positives but there are a few downsides:

      — Expensive
      — There are great options freeing up bigger hitters
      — Defender points have improved in the last few months - more CS to be had
      — Fixtures aren't plum until SWA

(all the same I'm keeping as he's pretty consistent which is gold dust)

      1. nkhoughton

When you have all the midfield big hitters keeping hazard isn't really that much of an issue people selling for most part don't I.e don't have hazard Alexis Firmino Eriksen/Alli beyond them and Phillips/Stanislas nobody is worth their salt in midfield city is very Rotation orientated

      2. Rossonero
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 20 days ago

All valid points, i'm not saying he is great option, just not as bad as everyone seems to think atm.

It's just the way this season is going, big name players blanks in easy home matches, everyone sell and then they strart to get double digit scores in though games.

The problem is pedro looks as dangerous and is on set pieces for more than 3m less.
He's frustrating in real life too, needs to be more direct imo. He will defo haul sooner or later though so it is tempting to keep yes

Pedro is really tempting me, he is looking much better when i watch Chealsa, it is just that fear that he will now and then be benched and if i want to get rid i won't have any good choices in his price bracket....but yes, he is very tempting

            9 years, 20 days ago

The way i'm thinking is, Haz have no europe games this season and i will won't him back soon. Since i'm saving my WC for doubles who should be around GW 34 transfering him out and then bringing him in will probably cost me 8 pts in transfer hits. And one penalty is enough for him to bring me 11 pts

I get what your saying. I stuck by firmino carrol and haz till last night and went without spurs. I'm having best season in 10 miserable years ( 4k OR). my plan is to keep cash for him and not spread it all about my team. If he gets back in form I always have an easy route. I play the game this way for such players

Hardly touched the ball in the box yesterday. Can't remember him having a shot. Poor away form. Two touch fixtures.

I agree he'll continue to tick over but at that price I think there's better value elsewhere.

His price is free falling too so can always sell him and get him back cheaper when he finds form again.

    10. rozzo

      Sell Sell Sell

      1 goal in 8 weeks

FPL is all about form and consistency. So you sell him now, doesn't mean you can never get him back again WHEN he shows some sort of form.

Sanchez and Alli should be essential in your midfields. Eriksen arguably also (6 double figure returns in 10). Many cannot afford Hazard as well.

Sellers are going to get burnt at some point, you telling me he will never score a goal or get an assist ever again?

The difference is, some people sold him weeks and weeks ago and have had the privilege of Alli's 8 goals or Eriksens 6 double figure returns in 10.

They are hardly going to be too bothered if Hazard scores in his next game are they.

      1. Rossonero
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 20 days ago

You have a great point, people who sold Haz 3-4 weeks ago are enjojing thier Erik and Alli points, but what about those who didn't make that move? Haz have better pts/game in last 5 then Costa, yet Costa is top (or second) in transfern in and Haz is top in transfers out. Yes, he looked awefull yesterday but so did lots of mids this GW

        1. rozzo
          • 12 Years
          9 years, 20 days ago

But Costa scores near enough every game. There is no one more consistent this season in the entire game.

1 goal in 8 is dreadful. If that was Sanchez or Alli they too would be out. I sold Firmino weeks ago for Eriksen, yes Firmino scored twice last week but Eriksen has got me a lot more points in that tme than Firmno ever would have.

No one can predict the future. I just pick my team based on form. I don't even have the best striker in the league (Aguero) and not too bothered about it to be fair.

Is VVD even going to be out of the next game? Was just a knock right?

Regardless, I might get rid of him anyway for Coleman as I think he's the better option anyway. Hmmm

Stones and Holebas out would be my moves... Chambers, Brunt, Nyom, Yoshida, Holgate/Funes Mori would my my options. Even Holgate + Coleman if possible

    Thoughts?

    Boruc
    Walker. Baines. Brunt.
    Sanchez. Eriksen. Phillips. Stanislas
    Kane. Costa. Ibra

Subs. Pickford. De Roon. Holebas. Amat.

    1.2 ITB, on a -8 already

    Heaton Pickford
    Bellerin Alonso Cedric Brunt Amat
    Sanchez Alli Rodriguez Phillips Carroll
    Ibrahimovic Lukaku Giroud

Had to get rid of Evans, Lallana and Hazard for Brunt, Sanchez and Caroll, gtg?

Yep, I completely accept all criticism as it was a rage transfer, but even then I think Brunt will probably recover my -8 by himself by the time WBA's good fixtures run out.

Have 1.5 m ITB and thinking of sorting my DF which is currently

    Foster Jaku
    Alonso Jones Williams Holebas* Amat*

Best option to get rid of Holebas or Amat? Getting rid of Holebas would allow me to get Rose but Amat would only give me 5.5m max DF. Thoughts on this? Best cheap DF out there?

0.1m out for Walker so would have to settle with Rose which isn't too bad. Think it would be too much invested in DF?

Can't afford Walker so Rose for Spurs would be the option. Baines would be a dbl up with Williams. Could be gold but never been a fan of dbl DF

Bertrand to Brunt for free? Yay or nay?

Bertrand good fixture(s), but Saints may have defensive frailties with Fonte gone and VvD maybe out. Bertrand looks good and attacking against lesser sides, but no chance of playing as a wingback in the near future. I guess he's a rotation risk too. BUT I have cover in Cedric and Friend. Brunt safer option, but is it a waste of a transfer? Should I save the FT? Should I do it if Brunt is due to rise, or do it regardless? Defence looks like this:

    Bellerin, Rose, Bertrand, Cedric, Friend
