Last week’s runaway poll leader Alexis Sanchez (11.9) has the perfect storm of consistency, fixtures and form to remain another strong contender in our latest rundown of the most popular captaincy options.

Sitting in 37.4% of Fantasy Premier League squads, the Chileans’ last-minute penalty at home to Burnley means he has now delivered attacking returns in nine of his last ten league matches ahead of next week’s visit from Watford. The Hornets, like the Clarets, are another travel-sick side, having shipped 21 goals and earned just two clean sheets on the road.

Sanchez’ eight attempts against Burnley, more than any other player in Gameweek 22, also highlights that, in terms of underlying form, he remains a superb armband option. He’s now fired 25 attempts on goal in his last three outings at the Emirates Stadium.

Olivier Giroud (8.7), who ended a four-match scoring run with a weekend blank, offers a cheaper alternative from among Arsenal’s ranks, as does Mesut Ozil, who earned a third successive assist on Sunday.

With 12 goals in their last four league matches, Spurs’ attacking credentials are not in question. But with Harry Kane (11.1), Dele Alli (8.8) and Christian Eriksen (8.7) all at the centre of their fine recent run, the captaincy vote is likely to be split ahead of their trip to Sunderland.

Alli is the most popular of the trio, with a quarter of FPL managers currently owning the England midfielder on the back of eight goals and an assist in his last six.

Nonetheless, Kane’s six successful strikes and two assists over the same period will ensure he also garners votes, while Eriksen cannot be overlooked – he’s bagged six double-figure hauls in the last 10 Gameweeks.

Another popular candidate is likely to be Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.7), who like Giroud, handed his armband backers a rare blank in Gameweek 22.

The big Swede failed to deliver a goal or assist for the first time since Gameweek 15 as a result of Saturday’s result. Hull City’s visit to Old Trafford may provide the perfect opportunity for him to make amends, however, given that the Tigers have conceded 26 times on the road, more than any other team.

Team-mate Paul Pogba (8.5) could also prosper in that fixture. One goal from 15 shots in the last four Gameweeks suggests that the 11.1% owned Frenchman has been unlucky not to notch with greater regularity.

Among Gameweek 23’s most enticing differential options are Swansea City pair Gylfi Sigurdsson (7.2) and Fernando Llorente (6.1).

With penalty duties and a goal in the Welsh side’s surprise away victory at Anfield on Saturday, their 5.2% owned Icelandic schemer should attract attention when Southampton visit.

A clean sheet at home to Leicester City on Sunday was the Saints’ first shut-out since Gameweek 16, which will also give hope to Llorente’s supporters after the Spaniard’s weekend brace brought his tally to eight for the season.

Virgil van Dijk’s availability could be the key factor at play here, with the Dutchman sustaining an ankle injury in Southampton’s win over the Foxes on Sunday.

Liverpool’s home tie with Chelsea looks tough to call and, given the ease of Manchester United, Spurs and Arsenal’s fixtures, their key assets are unlikely to challenge at the summit of the poll.

For those who fancy the Blues to get the better of Jurgen Klopp’s side, Diego Costa (10.3) appears to offer the greatest potential for returns.

His strike against Hull was his 15th of the season and ensures he remains level with Sanchez in the hunt for the 2016/17 Golden Boot. Liverpool’s failure to keep a clean sheet in five of their last six league outings also strengthens Costa’s appeal.

The Spaniard has scored eight of his 15 goals away from home this season.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of next week’s deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

    Bottomed 🙁

I'll be sticking with the armband on Sanchez this week. I'm less certain on what to do with the rest of my team, though.

    Heaton (Grant)
    Rose, Koscielny, Alonso (Amat, Holebas)
    Phillips, Alli, Antonio, San(c)hez (Marney)
    Wilson, Ibra, Kane

    2FT, 1.7ITB

My initial thoughts are Holebas > Brunt and then bench Alonso. This would also enable me to bench Koscielny for GW 24. It does however tie an awful lot up in defence, but is that necessarily a bad thing? It also ensures that I have an extra player that can play in GW 26 and GW 28 (I'm also contemplating Baines but he is definitely too expensive and I fancy Stoke to score next week anyway).

Want to keep Wilson for this week, but then will have 2FT again next week in order to upgrade him.

Alternatively I could just do Marney ? Carroll to free up 0.3m and get a playing sub (as currently they are all out)? This just seems like a bit of a waste, though.

      Holebas > funes mori

Thanks for the responses, but these are horrible moves in my opinion. No point getting an Everton defender that isn't Baines or Coleman, especially if you are saying not to bench Kosc or Alonso. Also not keen on having both Antonio and Carroll - one is enough.

Defenders are going to come good in the second half specially the ones playing wing backs and for Defensively solid sides.

This is soon going to be my defence
Che def - Walker - Baines - Brunt - Chambers. Just need to get a Chelsea defender.

Imo go for Baines or Brunt.

      1. Ha.

        9 years, 20 days ago

I'm just worried that it will reduce flexibility going forward as you'll always need to make 2 moves to upgrade an attacking asset.

    5. Jedi_Reed

      9 years, 20 days ago

I'd start Alonso regardless. You have to stick with your premium defenders and it'll sting if he gets attacking returns, especially against a Liverpool side who are known to be ropey in defence.

I don't think it's a bad thing to have money tied up in defence, especially at this point in the season, but I'd be aiming for a price structures more like this: 6-6.5, 5.5-6, 5.0, 4.5, 4.1.

So something like Alonso, Rose/Baines, Brunt, Friend, Holgate.

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 20 days ago

"You have to stick with your premium defenders". Why? That's like saying if you own Aguero you must captain him every week. The defensive structure you propose is poor as well.

Having 4 or 5 good defenders and rotating them is a great idea. As is benching the most expensive ones occasionally. Clean sheets are always the most important element of defender points.

        1. Ha.
          • 10 Years
          9 years, 20 days ago

I agree with this as I am not afraid to rotate if needed. My plan above is because I would not be comfortable in Chelsea keeping a cleansheet against Liverpool and Arsenal against Chelsea. However, the reason these are premium players is because they have the opportunity to score points without cleansheets - this week being a perfect example for Kosc.

          It's a tough decision.

But maybe it's worth benching a midfielder instead? Phillips seems to have gone off the boil recently...

            • 11 Years

I think it's an easy decision. Then downgrade Koscielny after GW25.

            1. Ha.
              • 10 Years
              9 years, 20 days ago

The issue is that I want the flexibility to get players like Aguero, if needed. He has Swansea GW 24 and Bournemouth GW 25. The only way I could get him in is to downgrade Kosc, but then I'd lose the Hull fixture (and Spurs play Liverpool that week).

Would you go Brunt or Baines?

        2. Jedi_Reed
          • 10 Years
          9 years, 20 days ago

I don't think the two are comparable. The reason you pay extra for players like Bellerin, Rose and Alonso is their capacity for attacking returns, which can come in any game, as well as clean sheets. I learnt that lesson the hard way with Toby last year. You can expect those points to come in the easy and hard fixtures, so to rotate those players risks missing out.

I prefer to have adequate cover if and when I need it, with the possibility or rotating my third/fourth choice defenders. It's a different model to what's being proposed, but I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand.

        3. Jedi_Reed
          • 10 Years
          9 years, 20 days ago

But I can see the benefit of having money invested in 3rd and 4th choice at this point in the season, especially if things start to tighten up.

What I'm advocating is probably closer to what I started with earlier in the season, when clean sheets were not very prosperous.

      2. Ha.
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 20 days ago

I've been wanting to downgrade Koscielny for a while now, but just cannot based on his points return and fixtures. 33 points in the last 5, or 6.6 PPG, with Watford and Hull in the next 3.

        1. Jedi_Reed
          • 10 Years
          9 years, 20 days ago

Yeah, those are some great fixtures. It seems like you're in a similar position to me this GW with 2FT, but a lot of transfers that would work a week, or two down the line.

          1. Ha.
            • 10 Years
            9 years, 20 days ago

Yeh it would be easier if I just had the 1FT as I wouldn't feel like I was wasting one. Wilson is definitely a weak link at the moment, but cannot get rid of him with Palace next!

I downgraded to Davies and upgraded Forwards to have Kane/Ibra/Giroud.

Feel that the momentum is swinging slowly away from Premium Mids (and 3-5-2) to Premium Defence and Forwards.

After Sanchez and Alli/Kane, struggling to see where the must-have Premium MIds are right now, with Pool in a slump and Haz woefully underperforming.

Whereas there is Ibra/Kane/Giroud/Costa/Lukaku/(Kun??) and Alonso/Aspi/Walker/Rse/Baines/Coleman in the 2 other fields.

Happy to hear others' opinions of course :-).

    Afternoon.
So holding on to Hazard for the Hull game didn't turn out too well. Shame really.
Do we get rid of him now?

Hell yes. I'm miserable that I held onto him for so long.

    Moreno as a left winger?

Makes a lot of sense when you read the whole article. He would FPL gold in this position. Ridiculously cheap, too.

Or Aguero to Lukaku. You are missing out on points in mid... Upgrade Siggy and one of the other 3 imo.

Holgate in for Holebas (0.5m in account if do this).

The other option is Funes Mori who is more nailed but he would be my 4th defender behind Jones.
I am going to upgrade Jones in a few weeks to somebody like Brunt?

    Heaton, Pickford.
    Alonso, Walker, Jones, Holebas, Amat.
    Eriksen, Lallana, Sanchez, Phillips, Whelan.
    Ibra, Giroud, Kane.
    0.0m, 2ft.

    Cedric - Daniels - Williams
    Sanchez (C) - Eriksen - Phillips - Lallana
Kane - Ibra - Giroud (vc)

    Grant; DeRoon, Holebas, Amat

    1) Lallana > Barkley

Is there/can we have a Hazard replacements Hot Topic? Feels like a lot of us are in the same boat this week...

    Pros and cons to:

    KDB
    Double Spurs mids
    Coutinho
    Mirallas/Barkley

    Anyone else?

double spurs mid is the best option atm
others are not even anywhere near
      but that could change quickly

FPL is lot of surprises 😉
