We’ve reached the point in the Fantasy Premier League season where “blank” Gameweeks are looming and, by preparing your squad early, you could give yourself the edge over mini-league rivals.

A “blank” occurs when a Premier League fixture has to be postponed and cannot be rescheduled to a date within the same Gameweek.

The most common reason for postponements in the Premier League is when fixtures clash with the latter rounds of the two main domestic cup competitions. Like last season, postponements this time around will be caused by clashes with the EFL Cup Final (Gameweek 26), the FA Cup Quarter-finals (Gameweek 28) and the FA Cup Semi-finals (Gameweek 34).

Gameweek 26

Southampton and Manchester United will meet in the EFL Cup Final on Sunday February 26 and the Gameweek 26 fixtures featuring those teams have already been postponed. Those fixtures are:

Southampton vs Arsenal
Manchester City vs Manchester United

It’s safe to assume that these postponed fixtures will be blanks. The following midweek is reserved for potential FA Cup Fifth Round replays and Arsenal and the two Manchester clubs have reached that round, so it’s unlikely that they’d risk rescheduling either fixture to those midweek dates.

Gameweek 28

Again, the postponed fixtures in Gameweek 28 will almost certainly result in blanks; there will be Champions League ties in the following midweek and we know for a fact that rearranged Premier League matches can only played on the same night as Champions League matches if there are no other available dates; this won’t be the case in Gameweek 28.

Any Gameweek 28 fixture that features an FA Cup Quarter-finalist will become a blank.

The draw for the FA Cup Fifth Round has been made this evening and is detailed below.

Burnley vs Lincoln
Fulham vs Tottenham Hotspur
Blackburn Rovers vs Manchester United
Sutton United vs Arsenal
Middlesbrough vs Oxford United
Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Chelsea
Huddersfield vs Manchester City
Millwall vs Leicester City or Derby County

Below we’ve listed the Gameweek 28 fixtures and next to each match you can see the probability of it becoming a blank and the permutations that will cause it to become a blank.

The probabilities are calculated using the bookies’ odds of each team progressing to the FA Cup Quarter-finals. These are based on early odds and may be revised in the next 24-hours.

members

Three of the fixtures are between teams that have both already been knocked out of the FA Cup, so we know that the following teams definitely won’t have blanks in Gameweek 28.

Bournemouth
West Ham United
Everton
West Bromwich Albion
Hull City
Swansea City

Incredibly, all eight FA Cup Fifth Round ties feature Premier League teams facing up against teams from the lower leagues (assuming Leicester win their Fourth Round replay against Derby), so we could get a maximum of seven blank fixtures in Gameweek 28.

We could even get zero blanks in Gameweek 28, but for that to happen all eight remaining Premier League sides would have to lose to their lower league opponents. The odds of that happening are astronomical.

Gameweek 34

The Premier League teams who reach the FA Cup semi-finals will have their Gameweek 34 fixtures postponed.

However, the midweek in Gameweek 34 is one of two slots in the second half of the season which are kept vacant to be used for rescheduling purposes. Therefore, it seems likely that the postponed Gameweek 34 fixtures will be moved forward a few days to midweek dates and thus protecting the semi-finalists from suffering blanks.

The other free slot open for the scheduling of postponed fixtures is Gameweek 37: I remain confident that this will be the most significant double Gameweek of the season.

Transfer Plans

The Blanks in Gameweeks 26 and 28 will be particularly difficult to navigate. Some of the most valuable and widely owned FPL players – including Alexis Sanchez and Zlatan Ibrahimovic – will blank in Gameweek 26, while Gameweek 28 could be even more chaotic.

In the main, it’s recommended that the upcoming blanks inform every transfer decision that you make between now Gameweek 30.

Thankfully, most* of the Gameweek 28 Blanks will be confirmed before the Gameweek 26 deadline; the FA Cup Fifth Round ties will be played on the weekend of February 18 and the Gameweek 26 deadline is on February 25.

Regardless of the state of your current FPL squad, I’d strongly advise preserving two free transfers heading into FA Cup Fifth Round weekend; if you’ll need to take a four point hit to field a full active XI in Gameweek 26, take the hit after the Fifth Round.

Ideally, between now and the Gameweek 25 deadline, you should spend the fewest possible transfers and only acquire players from teams who definitely won’t suffer blanks in Gameweeks 26 and 28 (Bournemouth, West Ham, Everton, West Brom, Hull and Swansea).

According to the Fixture Ticker and as revealed in this week’s Frisking the Fixtures article, Everton and Swansea have the second and third most favourable fixtures between now and Gameweek 30 respectively.

Gylfi Sigurdsson (7.2) is the key target at Swansea, but if you’re looking for a cheaper option, then new signing Tom Carroll (4.2) was outstanding on his debut at Anfield.

Meanwhile, the Toffees have scored eight without conceding in their three league games in 2017 and their popular FPL assets all appear to offer strong value over the coming weeks. Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman (both 5.6), Kevin Mirallas (6.1), Ross Barkley (7.0) and Romelu Lukaku (9.6) will all prove popular targets from this point on.

Mason Holgate (4.1) and Tom Davies (4.4) could also present strong budget options, although their starting roles are still not guaranteed. Assured starters are essential for cover in the blank Gameweeks: Roberto Funes Mori (4.6) might be a safer alternative to Holgate, for example.

When deciding who to sell before the Gameweek 25 deadline, your first priority should be to make sure that you can get a full active XI in Gameweek 26, and then concentrate on preparing for Gameweek 28. Save the tougher transfer decisions for after the Fifth Round of the FA Cup.

Remember, you can keep three outfield players with blanks on your bench during Gameweeks 26 and 28.

There are a number of factors to consider when deciding which players with blanks to keep and bench.

You should consider how much the player’s value has increased since you bought them, whether they’ll have two blanks or just one, the strength of their fixtures around their blank Gameweeks and, of course, their current form.

Unless you’re unable to field full active XI in the blank Gameweeks without many four point hits, I’d advise against using the Wildcard to prepare for the upcoming blanks. You’ll gain more of an advantage from putting it to use preparing for the double Gameweeks later in the season.

I’ll provide another article in the week leading up to the Gameweek 26 deadline.

Most*, if not all of the Gameweek 28 blanks will have been confirmed by then, so a transfer plan will be easier to devise, hopefully allowing you to ensure you have a full XI of active players in both of the upcoming blank Gameweeks.

*If an FA Cup Fifth Round tie involving a Premier League team goes to a replay, we’ll have to wait until the midweek after Gameweek 26 (February 28th/March 1st) for all of the Gameweek 28 Blanks to be confirmed.

Just woken to the FA cup draw. Wow!
    a) A great draw for the spectacle.
    b) Not one all Prem fixture. At first I thought this a disaster but surely this is an opportunity? Just by being on this site we must be in the top 5% of informed players. A great chance to rise up the ranks. Wary of loading my squad with too many Hull etc.

Thinking 3 EVE, 1/2 BOU, 1/2 WH and 1/2 WBA. Hope for 1/2 Prem teams knocked out and we should be ok?

      a) hot and cold balls helped
      b) one more fixture might get most to 11.

Thats what im thinking. Just one Prem team out would suit us on here well.

Yeah it'll be great for us I think, the doubles could be really fun.

3 Everton for sure plus Carroll, Siggy, WBA defence maybe.

Then Philips, the other Carroll, Snograss and it's looking strong.

How do you get them out though? Do you wc in 29? Do you play 29 with Siggy, Phillips, Snodgrass and Carroll in your mid?

I'll probably end up with three of those, benching Sanchez and another strong mid.

Then Kane Lukaku Carroll up front maybe

It will clean out the lucky casuals, but don't care much about them. Even folks posting here don't seem to realize how extreme that draw was. Every transfer for now needs to be for someone playing 26 & 28 and chucking someone missing 26 & 28. I hope all of the Prem teams stay in, it'll really put the pressure on.

I see what you are saying but no point loading up with too many of these teams for 28 especially if it means attackers against defenders for 1 week. There is the problem of getting them out. I am thinking WC straight after 28 and get the crystal ball out to predict quarter final results.

    Hi guys.

Took out Vertonghen for Coleman earlier but have just seen that Pulis says Evans will be missing out again. Leaves me in a bit of a hole seeing as I have Amat as my 5th def and Lovren vs Chelsea.

Should I just bite the bullet and play Lovren or take a hit for Brunt?

Or I could play Lovren and instead take a hit on Lallana --> Siggy?

    What do you think?

    Alonso Brunt Lovren Holebas Amat
    Sanchez Eriksen Alli Phillips Fletcher
    Ibra Kane Defoe

    0 FT, 1.7 in bank

    For next GW would you?

    a) Lovren + Defoe > Funes Mori + Lukaku

£6.6m sitting on my bench for 2 weeks while Chelsea have Liverpool and Arsenal. My other defenders have better fixtures

Why would you bench a wingback? Do you bench Haz when he plays Arsenal? He should be always playing regardless the opposition.

Alonso has more points per minute than Haz while costing 4 mil less. He is also the best defender in the game points wise and top 3 players in the game values by points per minute in the game. He provides the best value in the game and as that is the closest to being essential across all the players.

Doesnt mean he cant be benched when he has better defenders to play?

But I have benched likes of Rooney, Sanchez, Aguero and so on in last couple of years, not the right person to give suggestion on who to bench 😛

Defenders might have better fixtures which shouldnt equal points made. Id take Alonso against that sorry excuse of Lpools defense any day than lets say Jones against Hull. Theres also possibility of benching your 4/5th mid or 3rd striker.

    Foster
    Alonso - Valencia - Nyom
    Sanchez - Alli - Lallana - Pedro
    Aguero - Ibrahimovic - Rondon

    Pickford, Capoue, Holebas, Amat

    1 FT 0.1 ITB

I like having a team of playing players, even if they're just 2 pointers so I want to get rid of Anichebe but given how much like gold dust FT are with the upcoming blanks, it seems like such a waste of a transfer for a player I never played anyway.

    What do you think?

I don't own him and he's not an immediate target but I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up in my team in GW27/28.

Wondering whether to get him in for a hit for Lallana this week. O 26 or 28 blank and great fixtures. IMO do not lose now.

Will see how he play this week, fixtures are not that easy, so not sure what to expect from him...

    Attacks of My team:

    Hazard, Pogba, Sterling, Philips, Stanislas
    Ibra, Costa, Lukaku

Played AOA and I believe it is good to shift to 3-4-3, I want to free some money from either of Philips and Stanislas and invest in either shuffling my mid to better 4 or strengthening my defense. Both will have no blanks on GW 26 or 28 but keeping both until then might not be wise. Who to ship out? I am thinking of bringing in either Carroll (4.2) or Hojberg (4.2)

I think each of the other 3 mids is higher on the Out list before Phillips and Stanislas.
Esp Pogba and Sterling who have 2 blanks.

Yes, but shipping pog with Hull this week and sterling with WHA this week and SWA next does not seem right move for me. Also, even if I did ship them out I will still have my money jammed on 5mids. I could swap Pog and Sterling to may be siggy and Antonio before GW26. Thank you for your response anyways

I would roll over the FT, and start with downgrading Hazard and Pogba in the next 2 weeks (maybe even one to Carroll at 4.2 so you can get the team structure right), and sell Sterling just before the blanks.

2 FT, 2 tasty looking options. But which to go for?

    A: Holebas + Fletcher ---> Baines + Tom Carroll
B: Alonso + Mannone ---> Baines + Foster (+£1.0 ITB). Double up on Baggies DEF

Ill be benching Alonso for the next 2 weeks as my other defenders have way better fixtures

      A

I don't agree with benching Alonso but even if you're going to do that he's still worth holding for the fixtures after those two.

Being able to bench Ibra and Sanchez and have a strong team in 26 and 28 will be key.
Painful that 28 GW sees Everton play WBA otherwise I would load up on both.
Thinking get 3 Everton. Siggy and maybe Antonio? Only have Jaku Philips and Diomande now for 28

Expecting Diomande to start? 😛 Would be nice if he does...

Dont want to overload players from those teams... Will probably have around 6-7 players

Yeah could be a wise course to stay to 7. Can't see a lot of points in those fixtures Hull Swansea could be 5-5 though.

Will probably sell Ibra and keep Sanchez.

Hope to have Lukaku, Baines/Coleman/Funes Mori, Siggy and Antonio/Snodgrass for 28. Already have triple WBA.

Ibra other fixtures around 26 and 28 are so good so might hold. Sanchez selling not an option as bought for 1 mil cheaper than current price. Thanks for Snodgrass never thought of that.

Definitely keeping Ibra up until 25. May have to hope he doesn't haul in 27 and get him back in 29.

Same here for Sanchez. Bought at 10.9

Giroud > Lukaku for free or bank the transfer? Have Alexis. Giroud a great fixture, but would be nice to bring in Kaku prior to needing some Everton assets for blanks.

Bank the transfer. Giroud has a better fixture this week anyway. You can always do it next GW.

not an easy one, but I'd bench Cedric.
Southampton with no VvD is likely to concede.
Liverpool likely to score, too. But you never know, they have been out of sorts recently. Alonso also morelikely to get attacking returns.

Need a new defender with Van Dijk out till March, any suggestions? Have 5.8 in the bank to work with and my other defenders are Walker, Baines, Brunt, and Daniels.

    Potential options:
    A) Coleman (would be doubling up on everton defenders)
    B) PVA
    C) Valencia
    D) Other
