Arsenal make their predictable exit, in unexpectedly catastrophic style, as confidence saps from the Gunners’ legs and doubts surrounding the merits of re-investing in Alexis Sanchez builds. Here’s the notes from Tuesday’s Champions League tie…

Arsenal 1 Bayern Munich 5 (2-10 on aggregate)

Arsenal’s annual Round of 16 exit from the Champions League was an exceptionally chastening affair this time around, outplayed and prodigiously outscored by a Bayern Munich side in no mood for charity.

Theo Walcott’s goal gave the home fans faint hope of at least a tilt at second leg redemption and, in truth, the Gunners were the better side for much of the first half.

But the match, as in the first leg, hinged on Laurent Koscielny.

In Munich, the Frenchman’s injury precipitated an epic collapse. At The Emirates, the centre-half was sent off, after initially being shown only a yellow, for fouling Lewandowski when the Pole was through on goal after the break.

The striker duly converted from the spot, and another capitulation followed.

With Arsene Wenger’s hold on power looking increasingly tenuous, and star man Alexis Sanchez clearly not the happiest at the moment, there seems little to tempt Fantasy managers towards the Arsenal patch of North London at present.

Three of the side’s four most popular players are at the back – Peter Cech, Koscielny and Hector Bellerin. Conceding 10 goals to Bayern and keeping just one clean sheet in five league matches doesn’t suggest much joy ahead for those managers with interest in the Arsenal rearguard.

But the Gunners do enjoy a favourable run from Gameweek 29.

Aside from the visit of Manchester City, they will face West Brom, Palace and Middlesbrough away and entertain West Ham and Sunderland – all fixtures that have the potential for better defensive returns than Arsenal have managed in recent weeks.

But Sanchez is the big concern. Still owned by 27.4%, his place at the spearhead of the attack is suddenly in doubt.

Danny Welbeck, who was named in the starting line-up against Bayern, fell ill in the warm-up and Olivier Giroud took his place.

It remains unclear whether Welbeck or Sanchez would have operated on the left – or if the pair might have interchanged – but the Chilean ended up out wide when Giroud came into the side.

The Frenchman also started up front in the 3-1 loss at Liverpool, with Sanchez perhaps no longer nailed-on for the advanced role that has brought most of his 17 league goals this season.

Certainly, in a double Gameweek scenario, we have to think that Giroud would get an opportunity in the striker role in one of the two matches.

A Gameweek 28 blank at least gives Fantasy managers some time to consider their Arsenal options and, more importantly, their confidence and frame of mind.

The key consideration will be how we bid to exploit the two double Gameweeks still to come from Arsene Wenger’s side before the end of what has, otherwise, become another predictably uninspiring season.

Arsenal XI: Ospina, Bellerin, Mustafi, Koscielny, Monreal, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Xhaka, Ramsey (Coquelin 72), Walcott, Sanchez (Perez 73), Giroud (Ozil 72).
Subs not used: Cech, Gabriel, Gibbs.

My future transfer plans require me to go with Snodgrass and Lallana over Lanzini and Siggy.

I'd be holding both fairly medium-long term, and they'd enable me to get Sanchez and Kane for free over the next few weeks.

    Basically:

    A) Snodgrass + Lallana + 8
    B) Lanzini + Siggy

Yeah, same. I think I can live with Snodgrass, so maybe it'll boil down to:

        Lallana + 4 or Siggy

I can get this out for a -4

    Heaton
    Baines - McAuley - Robertson
    Mane - Sigurdsson - Phillips - King - T.Carroll
    Lukaku - A.Carroll

    Robinson - Aguero - Alonso - Ake

Think it will need wildcarding soon as it's lacking Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal and Man Utd.

I'm starting to come around to the GW29/30 WC idea. I'd want triple Spurs, Sanchez, Gabbiadini, players from United/Chelsea, any other obvious DGW players - from that list Alonso is the only one I currently have, due to this DGW/GW28.

What are the main reasons for saving the WC even longer?

Agreed, makes more sense to me to use it soon. Using it later will enable you to go full DGW crazy, but I think a lot of points are to be had from the players you mention from GW29

Yeah that's exactly what I'm thinking - Kane, Alli, Walker, Sanchez, Valencia/Shaw, Gabbiadini, Ibra placeholder, Pedro/Hazard/Costa, should easily outscore my current team. Think I need to put my TV to good use now rather than later.

I think Sanchez isn't looking such a hot item right now and and Chelsea aren't getting many goals (or CSs)! Triple Spurs can wait too imo but I'd want Harry.

Been toying with the idea myself. Doing it early also gives enough time to bring in some DGW'ers if I want them.

Doing it too late I worry that there'll be rotation or teams playing for nothing, making it a waste.

I think am issue for me , although it's not the worse idea, is the fact that you would have to tie money up in your bench ready for the bench boost. Lot of decent ish players on your bench taking up funds that could be spread around?

      1. SADIO SANÉ
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 9 months ago

Yeah, that could be an issue. I would probably have a cheap fifth mid/def now (ones that play in DGW34), then look to upgrade those between 34 and 37 - might take a couple of hits, but 8 points is nothing when considering how much better my team will be before then.

I don't need to WC for that. Will bring in Kane, Gabbiadini and Sanchez with my GW29-31 FTs. Already have Alli, Valencia (the only United player I want with Ibra suspended) and Alonso + Pedro. Happy to keep Lukaku, Mane and Coleman for now. It could make sense for some but I think I'm pretty well set.

What is everyones take on whether to take hits or not this week? I understand if they play and don't pickup a yellow card its only a -2, but if I take a 8 point hit I need one of my players to score just to break even. If you aren't planning on keeping the players you are transferring in is it worth the hit? On the other hand If you don't buy a ticket....

      • 11 Years

If not planning to keep, don't think i'd bother.

I've taken a -8 to get bench fodder in as a restructuring plan, who will hopefully get minimum 2 each so be better than taking similar hits later.

There is no answer to that question apart from its a gamble. I would do it if they had double game weeks (like I did for Aguero last week) or you need to because of imminent price rises but I try to never take a hit for any other reason.

    3. elmes85
      • 9 Years

I wouldn't take a hit on anyone that isn't going to be in your team for longer than this week.

I'm getting Llorente in for minimum 2 weeks (HULL & BOU) so think it's justified.

    On -8 already:

Baines - Brunt - Robertson (Alonso, Chambers)
    Coutinho - Mane - Siggy - T.Carroll (Alli)
    Lukaku - A.Carroll (Aguero)

    E) other idea?

If I do A I can bring back Alli for Phillips next GW (if I also do C and D). 🙂

    Hi all

This lot gtg? Right captain with so many in the EVE vs WBA game? Could balance the risk and armband Mane.

    Randolph / Jaku
RFM Coleman Brunt Amat / Alonso
Siggy Mane Fletcher Antonio / Sterling
    Kaku (c) Llorente / Kun
    -4

Kun + Sterling -> Eriksen and Kane next week.

    Thanks!

    1FT:
    Bank: 1.4

    Jakupovic
    Walker - McAuley - Alonso
    Mane - Eriksen - Sigurdsson - Sterling
    Lukaku - Llorente - Ibrahimovic
Subs: Heaton, Ake, De Roon and Rannochia.

What do you think of my team?

Looking very good actually. Perhaps do Ake -> Mawson or Funes Mori to give you 8, and consider a -4 for Sterling to another Liverpool mid as well

Who would you (C) out of this lot for GW28?

    Mane (v Bur)
    Coutinho (v Bur)
    Firmino (v Bur)
    Siggy (@ Hul)
    Snoddy (@ Bou)
    Lukaku (v WBA)
    Llorente (@ Hul)

At the moment i am considering one of the Liverpool MILFs, but which one?

Mane & Firm scored big last week, but Cout looked good too and i feel he is due a haul ...

You already have 3 Liverpool, so I wouldn't add a 4th (the captain) in case they do a Liverpool and lose 0-1.
      So Lukaku for me.

          It's just hedging your bets.

If you believe Liverpool will spank Burnley, then back them. Your captain should always be the player you think will get the most points, regardless of other players you have.

Both are fantastic options - captaincy this week is definitely a more important decision than inane "Lanzini or King"-type dilemmas.

Indeed. I really think we're due to see a real spanking administered by a big team to a little one, and Liverpool do have form at smashing teams (remembering past games v. Norwich and Sunderland at home). Could be the one for Mane.

But Kaku must be gunning for golden boot - good week to get back on terms with Kane, if he really fancies it (as we saw when he got 4) he could explode.

Ugh, tough decision. On Kaku for now.

On Kaku at the moment, but considering Mane - I have 3 Everton players for their two home fixtures, so I'm worried about going "all in" on them and balancing the risk with Sadio.

Wildcard holders, are your plans still to hold until the gameweek before a double or have your opinions shifted?

Personally am leaning towards using it for GW29 and loading up on DGW options. Will have enough free transfers to make any last minute adjustments and my team will be in need of a refresh

      From Wikipedia:

The winners of the 2016–17 UEFA Champions League and 2016–17 UEFA Europa League are each given an additional entry if they do not qualify for the 2017–18 UEFA Champions League through their domestic league. Because a maximum of five teams from one association can enter the Champions League, if both the Champions League title holders and the Europa League title holders are from the same top three ranked association and finish outside the top four of their domestic league, the fourth-placed team of their association will be moved to the Europa League.[

Yes as above there is a maximum of five places for each country to accommodate Europa/Champions League winners too. So if Utd and City or Leicester were to win then fourth place would miss out.

Do I take another hit to do Aguero > Llorente for a 1 week punt? (-8)

Already done Phillips > King (allows Kane and Sanchez to come back in with ease) + Sterling > Firmino.
    Would give me:

    Foster
    FMori (Holgate Amat)
    Mane Firmino King
    Lukaku Llorente

It makes absolutely no difference but Kun out first for Lukaku feels more 'right' than Ibra..? Then Ibra>Kane next week.

Glad Ibra got the ban from an FPL point of view as it would have been a tough call whether to hold Lukaku or switch back to Kane. Sunday was torture being a Kane owner since he got fit!

Tbh it's the same basic premise whichever one you take out - you're taking a non-playing asset out for a playing one.

However, Kun has a game in GW29 whereas Ibra is now banned. If there is a big injury crisis or another red or something, you at least don't have a transfer invested in removing him next time round and could play him, whereas Ibra is banned so you'd need to be getting rid of him too!

Yes it's a silly non-problem. I have to have Kane back though, it will just feel wrong to sell Aguero before a home game even though he's just been a one week TC punt. I can't afford to upgrade Carroll to Kane either.

Only other way is Firmino+Carroll>5.6+Kane for a hit next week and keep Aguero but my midfield will look awful! 🙂
