Two four-nil thrashings and a historic farewell ensured that this was no ordinary Sunday, as Phillipe Coutinho punished double Gameweek investment and Harry Kane earned the final Spurs goal at White Hart Lane. Here’s the Stock Check…

On the Rise

Philippe Coutinho
We were braced for a single fixture asset to explode points over Double Gameweek 37 and it is Philippe Coutinho who appears to have accepted the role.

Sold by over 221,000 Fantasy Premier League managers over the last two Gameweeks, Coutinho stepped up to produce his biggest points haul of the campaign in the 4-0 rout of West Ham, courtesy of two goals and an assist.

It was the first time that the Brazilian has been involved in three goals in a single Premier League match, arriving having taken up a new position in a changed Liverpool’s formation.

Deployed in a central midfield role, with Adam Lallana recalled to provide the point of a diamond system, Coutinho nonetheless capitalised on a lethargic West Ham display.

He was a sparkling influence throughout, recording six efforts on goal, while his assist was one of six chances he created.

Liverpool will face relegated Middlesbrough in Gameweek 38 and, with goal difference potentially a crucial factor in deciding the final top four, we have to believe that there will be further profit available for Coutinho.

That is already prompting FPL managers into a returning to the 8.4 priced asset as a final day option. Among the top ranks – who will have doubtless cleared the decks for double Gameweek assets – he will be an unlikely differential, even with his 18.8% ownership on the rise.

Daniel Sturridge
But Sturridge could represent the ultimate Gameweek 38 gamble.

He returned to the starting line-up to lead Liverpool’s attack alongside Divock Origi and set Jurgen Klopp’s side on their way with a smartly taken opening goal.

With four attempts in total, three from inside the box, Sturridge looked lively enough to make a claim to retain his starting role for Boro’s visit.

He will go into that fixture in just 36,000 (0.8%) of squads, although a hefty 9.6 price tag will doubtless prove a major obstacle, preventing that number increasing markedly.

The Liverpool Defence
Jurgen Klopp’s backline has, statistically at least, ranked among the top defences this season without offering the assurance of clean sheets.

Prior to Gamweweek 33 they boasted just 7 shut-outs, but four in five outings since has suddenly thrust them into consideration for the final day.

They could hardly be treated to a more favourable fixture – Middlesbrough arrive at Anfield without motivation and with ten away goals all season.

Centre-back Dejan Lovren, priced at just 4.8, along with goalkeeper Simon Mignolet at 4.7, are likely to be popular targets.

Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen
Kane got his goal, although he was deprived the honour of scoring the final strike at White Hart Lane by Wayne Rooney’s consolation for Manchester Untied.

But Fantasy managers will be content enough with Kane’s return ahead of his second fixture with Leicester City on Thursday.

Now just two behind Romelu Lukaku in the race for the Golden Boot, we have to presume that he will remain motivated to retain that gong having claimed it in his last campaign.

Spurs remained full of attacking intent against United, with Eriksen once again in profit as he provided the dead-ball delivery for Kane’s goal.

The Dane has now produced 18 FPL assists over the season – level with Man City’s Kevin De Bruyne – delivering five in his last seven Gameweek starts.

A tally of five key passes in Sunday’s clash also ensured that Eriksen sat top of the Bonus Points System to claim an additional three points. Now tied with Dele Alli on 209, he’s outscored his team-mate by 50 points to 41 since Gameweek 31.

Ben Davies
With Danny Rose sidelined, Davies has been handed a start over the last 13 Gameweeks at left-back and has produced either an assist or a clean sheet in nine of those matches.

Rooney’s consolation robbed the Welshman of another shut-out and likely bonus points but, nonetheless, with Rose apparently being eased back into the fold, Davies looks well placed to see out the season ahead of trips to Leicester City and Hull City.

Wilfried Zaha, Christian Benteke
Subject to a flood of sales since Gameweek 34, the Palace pair were both key figures as the Eagles eased their way past a shell-shocked Hull City at Selhurst Park.

Zaha and Benteke were ranked third and fourth for FPL sales ahead of Gameweek 37 but, like Coutinho, they were to punish the legions who ushered them out.

Scoring a first goal since Gameweek 30, Zaha snapped a run of five successive blanks. Meanwhile, Benteke was back on the scoresheet following three blanks of his own.

While there will little or no investment in the pair, those still holding may consider retaining their services for the Gameweek 38 collision with a distracted Manchester United.

In Decline

Roberto Firmino
With Coutinho delivering at the London Stadium, his compatriot Firmino missed out with an ongoing “muscle issue”..

Having provided three successive blanks prior to today’s absence, Firmino’s stock is in freefall having lost over 130,000 owners in the last two Gameweeks.

Coutinho ranks top for transfers in so far ahead of Gameweek 38, while Firmino retains his place in the top five for sales – only Romelu Lukaku has left more squads since Friday’s deadline.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

After the lessons learned in this year's big DGW, are you going to play it differently next year?

Personally, it's been a very good week so far with 88 points, but the bench boost has been virtually non-existent because of the usual suspects missing. If faced with a similar situation again (i.e. WC 2 weeks before DGW), I would play the bench boost the week before the DGW and leave my triple captain for the DGW. That is, if the teams involved in the DGW are on the beach. If they're still fighting for something, I'd probably follow the same strategy again.

So few people keep single gameweek assets so everyone tends to fail together whereas if you risk it, you miss weeks like benteke austin and Phillips which can change a season

The trouble is it's impossible to predict which SGW player will explode. Fair play to those that kept Coutinho for instance, but for every manager who played Coutinho there was one that had, say, Lukaku who blanked. The only SGW player in my team is King, and I would probably do the same again if I had a do-over.

It all depends on how the DGWs fall as well - last year DGW34 was arguably a bit too early for teams to be completely at the beach, making it ideal for bench boost.

Of course it favoured the TC'ers in the end with Sanchez and Aguero's monster hauls.

WC 2 weeks before DGW can be a risk though as we found out this gameweek.
Have to WC the week before to reduce the risk.

All the players rotated were always likely to be rotated, so it was just bad selection that has caused poor BB scores, not the fact it was played in a DGW. There maybe better weeks to play it but having Caballero on the bench was a big chance of points, plus we should not judge half way through the GW

Stephens always at risk from Caceres
Tadic and Gabbiadini always going to share game time with other fit players
Gibbs only playing due to others injured etc etc
All of this was identified and warned on here

My worst mistake too. I got burned by Stanislas and concluded I should stay away from Bournemouth players altogether. I also didn't think King could keep it up. Just a bad decision.

There's a tendency to distrust cheap players, writing off their hauls as outliers in the general trend. As managers, we have to be perceptive enough to see which bandwagons are worth jumping on - it was obvious Capoue would not continue his form of the first few weeks, whereas King has been fantasy gold.

Another tendency is to have a certain superstitious fear that if you've delayed buying someone for a while, he's bound to stop scoring soon. I say better late than never!

Yup, that is a lesson I've learned this year. You always think 'he can't go on like that'. Some you get right (Capoue) and some you get wrong (King). Bit the bullet and got King for hit and it's still working out. Getting this right is important.

Vardy last year started at 6.5 and was pretty much a season keeper.

Fun fact - I was helping a friend put together his FPL team that year, he wanted to go with all the famous players but I explained to him that he needs a bit of balance, and suggested he gets Vardy as he was affordable.

      I got Ulloa instead.

I think that's exaggerated. It's like the FA Cup where the PL teams enter at the third round. Smaller countries get entry through qualifying rounds - right down to Gibraltar and Northern Ireland. Of course the biggest leagues with the most successful teams should have more representation. The idea is have a competition with the best clubs in Europe right?

The idea was to have a league of champions, hence the name.
The problem is that it gets tougher and tougher for teams like Rosenborg, Sparta Prag and Malmö/IFK Gothenburg etc to get in to the main tournament . And those teams have done pretty well on many occasions.

Nice front 3 with all to play for, would mean a hit for me to get that though and I already have Llorente.

Llorente will play the last game though, no doubt about that, as the Swans have a carnival atmosphere 'no-risk' last game to thank the fans for a hard season.

That's a very good first year - I only started last year myself (in GW2) and finished just outside 100k.

This year I'm at 2,405 right now with an outside chance at top 1k - I'd like to say it's because of the extra experience, but for all I know next year I'll be down at 6 figures again!

              I hear ya.

I'm floating around 7k and I'm weirdly in a spot where I'm a bit disappointed in my season because I've left points out there in a few weeks and maybe not smashed it in weeks where I had done in the past.

But maybe I've been more consistent?

I know the feeling - it's been a great season for both of us if we're inside the top 10k but I keep thinking the 'what if' questions. For example, I've managed to own Hazard, Alli and Sigurdsson in all the wrong weeks, whereas if I'd got those calls right it would've been a really amazing season.

Still, not complaining at all, I've clearly done lots of things right on the other hand and I'm sure the same applies to you..

Why bring in Haz when he might not play? And why bring in Ozil at all? Or take Kane out for that matter.

If you are going to go punty, it should make more sense than that imo.

      B) Sturridge, Hazard, Ozil.

Which do you prefer? (Obviously will wait to see if Alexis is fit. If not, A it will be.

Coin toss really. Assuming Alexis is fit, tempted to do C. But, ditch Hazard out against Sunderland.. Seems not really wise.

Won't be taking any of those three out unless there's something absolutely concrete said by Conte or Wenger about resting them.

How did your SGW players fare out?
I'm glad that I held onto Mawson, King & Benteke. It has been a decent GW so far for me, 6.7k rank and up to 4.6k overall.
4.6k OR and yet 703 players above me in the FFS league. This just shows how strong the FFS community is! Thanks to all for you help and for the banter during my first season on here (I just hope that I don't become an addict now) 🙂
