Premier League Fixtures Announced

The Premier League fixture list for 2017/18 was published at 9am today, granting us the opportunity to pencil in some likely targets for our initial squads.

Early analysis reveals that only two teams – Manchester United and Championship play-off winners Huddersfield Town – manage to avoid all of last season’s top six in the opening six Gameweeks.

Jose Mourinho’s men alternate home/away for those opening rounds, starting off with an Old Trafford visit from West Ham and a trip to Swansea City before facing up to Leicester City, Stoke City, Everton and Southampton.

Huddersfield, meanwhile, begin their season with a trip to Crystal Palace before back-to-back home encounters with Newcastle and Southampton. The Terriers also face West Ham, Leicester and Burnley in the opening six, suggesting they could play a part in our initial plans.

The new schedule has also been relatively kind to fellow promoted pair Newcastle (TOT, hud, WHU, swa, STO, bri) and Brighton (MCI, lei, wat, WBA, bou, NEW), who both face just one of last term’s top six for the first six matches.

Newcastle’s initial five road trips – Huddersfield, Swansea, Brighton, Southampton and Burnley – look promising, bearing in mind that they accumulated more points on the road than any side in last term’s Championship.

Although Brighton face a testing opening home encounter with Man City, nine of their following 10 at home (WBA, NEW, EVE, SOU, STO, CPL, BUR, WAT, BOU) also offer encouragement, with only a troublesome visit from Liverpool in that run. Chris Hughton’s side earned more points at home than any Championship outfit in 201617, with 12 of their 21 clean sheets arriving at the Amex.

Meanwhile, Spurs’ opening schedule suggests that many will be earmarking a place for Harry Kane from the get-go, with Mauricio Pochettino’s men squaring up to only one of last year’s top six in the first eight Gameweeks (new, CHE, BUR, eve, SWA, whu, hud, BOU).

But Man City have also been handed some kind-looking matches (bri, EVE, bou, LIV, wat, CPL) to kick off their campaign and their main attackers could also be quick off the mark.

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s Champions League play-off matches, which follow Gameweek 1 and 2 clashes with Watford and Palace, are worth bearing in mind – all the more so when you consider that they take on Arsenal and Man City in the subsequent two league fixtures.

Elsewhere, Arsenal’s first five home matches – against Leicester, Bournemouth, West Brom, Brighton and Swansea – could promote early investment, particularly if Arsene Wenger looks to rotate for Europa League matches.

Similarly, Burnley and Swansea have some favourable opening fixtures in front of their own supporters.

The Clarets – who claimed 33 of 40 points at Turf Moor last term – welcome West Brom, Palace, Huddersfield, West Ham, Newcastle and Swansea in their first six at home. However, this is offset by an evil run of away matches (che, tot, liv, eve, mci) for Sean Dyche’s side that will, at the very least, keep Tom Heaton busy between the posts.

After hosting Man United in Gameweek 2, Paul Clement’s Swansea then welcome Newcastle, Watford, Huddersfield, Leicester, Brighton and Bournemouth for their subsequent six at the Liberty.

Looking at the tougher schedules, Everton and Leicester have been arguably handed the most testing opening runs across the first six Gameweeks, with both squaring up to four of last term’s top six.

From Gameweek 2-5, in particular, Ronald Koeman’s side look a no-go area, with trips to Man City, Chelsea and Man United in addition to a home clash with Spurs.

The Foxes travel to Arsenal and United and entertain Chelsea and Liverpool, although this is offset by encounters against newcomers Brighton and Huddersfield.

Finally, just a heads-up that the new fixture ticker for 2017/18 is now live on site – here’s a preview movie entailing the features involved.

Is it just me, or is there a high proportion of blue to red on the ticker?

I love Momo Salah, it's going to be hard to resist bringing him in when he signs for Liverpool. Salah, Coutinho, Mane will be so tasty in a 4231.

Yep, I started watching him at Basel, where he was great. Was excited when he came over here to Chelsea, but he didn't get much of a chance and wasn't great when he was given a run out. But he has been great again at Roma...

15 goals and 13 assists in a traditionally defensive league.

Lamela scored 15 goals from midfield for Roma in a traditionally defensive league before signing for Spurs.

Been banging them in ever since.

See how Salah goes, I think he's a good player but I'm never convinced by Serie A player attacking returns translating to the PL. Serie A have a number of good defenders, especially the Italian trained ones, but their overall defensive structures are not necessarily anything special imo.

Everton, Leicester, Stoke and Burnley look like no go areas for the start of the season.

This is going to make choosing a cheap keeper from the off interesting!

I don't have full ticker yet, but I doubt Heaton is going to be £4.5 this season.

May just get a premium GK and be done with it.

Heaton is a Premium keeper :p

Even at 5m or 5.5m your getting the keeper who's topped the table both seasons he's played in the PL.

Looking at the fixtures my initial thoughts are:

    WBA/4.5

    WBA/MU/NEW/SOU/Kolasonic(ARS)

    MU/MC/NEW/WH/???

    Kane/Jesus/Cheapie

    WC November/December time.

All depends on budget of course but that is what my intial template is going to try and fill then play around from there.

Trying to avoid 3 players from any team to start.

    Whats other peoples thoughts?

It's risky starting without Kane due to ownership.

Can take some risks early. Morata will be full of fire and Kane has the rep of being a slow starter. Maybe after the Chelsea game reassess!

    2. Haggis
      • 8 Years
      7 years, 3 days ago

Totally agree with avoiding triple ups from any team.

Thinking Morata could be a decent option with MUNs initial fixtures, and a nice placeholder for Kane. (I think it's worth taking the risk going without as long as you have a backup plan to get him in)

I'm thinking Palace's Milivojevic as a decent 5th mid, on pens and should be nailed as he was so crucial for them avoiding relegation at the end.

It's likely that most teams will require extensive surgery before end of November. In theory, holding the wildcard seems sound logic, in practice 80% of us will have to pull the trigger way before that

Although the chatter is that PA accidentally posted that, then deleted it and replaced it with Leicester. An odd typo to make, but I can't find the PA Everton report anywhere now, so seems true.

to have a better picture of who is strong who is weak (initially). it's like a wildcard and it would cost you about 30 points (if you have a bad 1st gameweek)

Surely you're just better off saying to yourself that you will DEFINITELY use your Wildcard after week 1.

Same principle but you've only lost your wildcard and not a hole week's worth of points.

I've seen someone use it to good effect the year Leicester won the title. He missed the first gameweek after being away on holiday so joined GW2, and ended up winning our private league in the end.

Why would you not make a team for GW1 and just be prepared to make wholesale changes? To change your entire squad would only cost 56 points and you've got to expect you'll have a few players you want to hang onto and score more points than you're going to spend!

Oh my, what a morning: Tweeting like a mad man!

For the first 5, here's what I reckon so far:

o WBA def essential (McAuley might be 5.5 so maybe a 5.0... hoping Jev/Nyom is 4.5 tbh)
o SWA good rotation w/ WBA first 5 (Daws+Maws ideal, but am Olson/Nyom could also figure); +BUR=3
    o UTD best start (Morata!!)
    o HUD best filler (Kachungaville!!!!)
    o Avoid EVE (sorry Pickford)

I've put some potential rotation options on twitter (@whoassisted_FPL), but the one that stands out a bit is Brighton/Hud, especially if we're wildcarding early... if we can find a 4.0 gem, it could be epic:
cpl NEW SOT WBA LEI NEW

That 6m spot is up for grabs. Will depend on pre season. May have to downgrade to 5.5 if funds are tight.

Here's a first draft of my Season Fixture Ticker. It's not the prettiest around, but it does the job.

1st tab - Defensive prospects by team.
2nd tab - Attacking prospects by team.
3rd tab - Team lookup detailing the strengths/weaknesses I have assigned for each team.

Feel free to make a copy and edit the lookup according to your perception of each team's strengths and weaknesses. For instance, you may think Spurs are a rock at the back both home and away, in which case you'd simply change the 4 value in Away - GA column to 5 for "TOT". Any questions, just post them here.

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1_HyEgz0kvb2hSabue876sara-pvEXyH8D0j2dcdI7Ew/edit?usp=sharing

If you'd like more granularity in the shading between red and blue, then instead of rating teams out of 5, you can change this to 1-7 or 1-10 even.

    Enjoy! 🙂

Is bringing in a player a week or 2 in advance of when everybody else will bring him in a sound tactic, need to get on the prices early this season as that is what was my major downfall last season early on

      • 7 Years

Get on price rises the night after the game. Check FPL stats and make some quick decisions. If they rise that night they are likely to rise during the week too.

    2. Holmes
      • 10 Years

      Depends on fixtures...

If they dont perform in first 2 fixtures, then their price will drop anyway.

      I thought this was a wind-up but maybe it's a genuine question.

I think it's sufficient to bring in bandwagons once they've exploded so long as you're comfortable with taking a few -4's and risking injuries elsewhere. Using this tactic alone will see you reach around 110m TV come the DGW's.

If you can predict who's going to do well in advance, then obviously go that route! The best players I've seen interviewed say they look 5 or 6 games in advance and keep that player even if he blanks in the first 3 or 4 games of that chunk of fixtures. As ever patience is often the key (unless it's Gabiaddini...).

Through end of last season Gabbiadini was saying "keep me for just one more week, I'll come good again. Look at my fixtures, I won't let you down." Was pleased for the season to end. Now I open the new ticker and the whispers start again... "just give me one more shot, guv. Look at those fixtures. I know I let you down before, but this could be a new start for us."
