Vincent Kompany receives a four-match ban after picking up his second straight red card of the season. Wayne Rooney bags a brace as United line up a visit to Liverpool in the fourth round of the FA Cup, while James McClean continues to catch the eye of Fantasy managers, with his second goal in as many games:

Ramires
Having played wide right in the last week’s win at Wolves, the Brazilian returned to central midfield for the visit of Portsmouth. Ramires continued his goalscoring exploits, though, following up his strike at Molineux with a double as Chelsea chalked up a somewhat flattering 4-0 win. He also provided an assist for Frank Lampard’s fourth. With Daniel Sturridge still sidelined, Juan Mata took up the wide right role this time and grabbed his sixth domestic goal of the season- every one of them have come at the Bridge.

Wayne Rooney
Dimitar Berbatov didn’t even make the subs bench at the Etihad. The Bulgarian’s brief flirtation with the United first XI wasn’t helped by an insipid display at Newcastle in midweek and Rooney, paired with Danny Welbeck, returned to goalscoring ways with a double in the 3-2 win. That’s 6 goals in his last five starts for the United man and with home clashes against Bolton and Stoke in two of the next three gameweeks, Rooney will surely tempt plenty Fantasy managers to hand him the armband for those games as he threatens to return to the consistency of early season.

Paul Scholes
Although United have been struggling for midfield consistency of late, Scholes’ decision to come out of retirement arguably overshadowed the match itself. A major surprise, given he admitted he felt his legs were gone last season but the only significant aspect of his second half sub appearance was his loss of possession that led to City’s second.

Antonio Valencia
The return of Chris Smalling from tonsillitis allowed Valencia the chance to move back into the midfield once again. Having covered at right-back due to United’s on-going injury worries, his threat has been somewhat nullified but Valencia made an immediate impact back in his favoured position, crossing for Rooney to fire the visitors ahead within the ten minute mark. With Jonny Evans recovered and on the bench, it seems Sir Alex Ferguson’s injury worries are easing up, meaning Valencia can be utilised as an attacking talent by the champions once again.

Sergio Aguero
Another home game, another goal for the Argentine as City battled valiantly to save their cup aspirations. Aguero continues his remarkable streak of form at the Etihad- a look at his FPL stats shows he has returned 10 goals, 4 assists and 14 bonus points at home, compared to 4 goals, 1 assist and 3 bonus points on his travels. With Fulham, Blackburn and Bolton visiting City in three of their next four home games, Aguero offers strong opposition to Robin Van Persie for the armband with those fixtures.

Vincent Kompany
The City skipper now faces a four-match ban after picking up his second red card of the season. Kompany received his marching orders with a mere eleven minutes on the board for a two-footed tackle on Nani and will now miss the upcoming league clashes with Wigan and Spurs, in addition to both the club’s Carling Cup semi-final legs against Liverpool. Roberto Mancini admitted post-match that City will appeal, but if the ban stands, it gives Kompany’s Fantasy owners something of a quandary- currently at 6.6, do they hold on until he is next available on 1st February or move him on with their winter wildcards?

Stephane Sessegnon
Having mainly been deployed in a role just off the main forward by both his managers over the season, Sessegnon led the line for Sunderland at Peterborough yesterday. Nicklas Bendtner was nowhere to be seen but despite three recognised forwards on the bench, O’Neill still preferred Sessegnon as his main striker in a 4-5-1. He may have failed to play a part in any of his side’s two goals but O’Neill’s lineup continues to promote the Benin international as a strong out-of-position contender over the months ahead.

James McClean
The Irishman seems to have the backing of O’Neill and once again vindicated his manager’s faith, playing a prominent role in the Black Cats win. Despite the return of Seb Larsson, McClean kept his place in the first XI, with Kieran Richardson handed a role in central midfield. McClean had already caught the eye of Fantasy managers in his previous two league games, picking up maximum bonus both times and netting in the 4-1 win over Wigan. He continued his goalscoring ways yesterday, notching Sunderland’s second, in addition to picking up an assist for Larsson’s free-kick opener. At 4.5, he’s starting to attract investment and if he continues his recent form, could prove an absolute bargain in the second half of the season.

he headline story above is from The Sun - the only newspaper to pick up on the Paul Scholes return before it happened - which claims that Spain's new top-rate tax laws and an apparently increasingly difficult relationship with the Real Madrid fans have led Cristiano Ronaldo to consider his future at the Bernabeu.

Need some opinions and advice on this possible move.

    Vorm Sorenson
    Kompany BAE Simpson Senderos Evans
    Silva Nani Bale Sess Dyer
    RVP Aguero Sturridge

    I am thinking of doing:
    Sturridge -> Rooney
    Nani -> Valencia
    Kompany -> Shotton

    Leaves me with this:

    Vorm Sorenson
    SHOTTON bae Simpson Senderos Evans
    Silva VALENCIA Bale Sess Dyer
    RVP Aguero ROONEY

    0.6M in the bank
What do you think about this? I could even get Demps instead of Valencia if that would be better? Appreciate all the help. Thanks all.

SANTON IS NAILED ON YOU HATERS.

    Pardew:

“The players deserved all of the plaudits they get,” Pardew told the Gazette. “They were brilliant to a man.

“Their (Man United’s) two wide players didn’t produce much because of Simpson and Santon.

“Santon’s had to be patient, but he put his marker down on the left-back slot for probably the rest of the year.

I wouldn’t know what to expect for Raylor things are so unpredictable there. You have Obertan and HBA lurking so I would say he may be limited. Would be best asking when Attila or ToonTom are around, hear their views.

I have to say that Simpson has really impressed me in recent weeks, though I’ve always had an eye on Santon. I may go with Santon as he is cheaper but also as he is a bit of a differential over Simpson – Although end of the day, the outputs should be pretty similar. I will may make a call at the weekend and get one in for either Hibbert/Brown (depending on extent of injury for the latter).

I like the way two high profile United players (Rooney and Rio) are on Twitter this morning making a point of saying it was a red card yesterday. I understand what they are saying, I get their points and I agree it was to the letter of the law. However, seeing as Mancini has said they will appeal the decision the cynical part of me is thinking these two are merely trying to add a bit of extra weight to the argument that it shouldn’t be overturned – A tactical Twitter statement if you will.

Do you think the FA care about Twitter?? They know what their own laws say. It'll get turned down I think, but I would prefer it the appeal was successful, the rules are going crazy this year. You won't be able to shoulder barge soon...it's ridiculous.

I bet they are actually yes – Many a high profile name is using it to get their points across on major issues. I’m not saying it is necessarily a bad thing from our perspective, but the media get hold of what is said by these players and they run with it. This snowballs and increases pressure on FA decision makers.

The trouble with the FA and football in general is that there seems to be no common sense involved. Kompany shouldn’t have been red if you use common sense, but the ref has to go with the letter of the law otherwise he gets nailed from his assessor. The real p*ss take is when something happens like the Milijas ‘tackle’ and they choose to do nothing about it and keep him on a three game ban. By that appeal failing, Kompany has absolutely no chance of winning. If he somehow did then it would be beyond farcical.

              You make good points though.

              - The FA are possibly susceptible to external (media) pressure to some extent.
              - Lack of common sense in refereeing on the field and FA punishments off it.
              - The FA have made a "rod for their back" by not overturning preposterous decisions like the Milijas one.

I think Rooney's reaction at the time showed that he thought (correctly) it was a dangerous tackle.

      It shouldn't be rescinded because...
      A) Where does it stop? Soon they will be reviewing every tackle/foul/booking.
      B) Thems the rules suckah!

Came strong the second half of last season and is undoubtedly an attacking threat, with good goal/assist potential. I'm seriously considering him over Dempsey, as it opens up the option for a Rooney Aguero RVP front line.

Been up all night working on my wild card team. I'm guessing Kompanys red card will be recinded.

So let me hear if you have any thoughts on this. Pretty pleased now so guessing someone will be injured during the week.

    GK: Lindegaard, Sørensen
DEF: Kompany, Agger, Assou Ekotto, Senderos, Williamson
MID: Van der Vaart, Dempsey, Sessegnon, Silva, Valencia
    ATT: Yakubu, Van Persie, Sturrigde.

What am I missing? Can't have Bale in my team as I made a bet with someone that i would beat him without having him. It's a 500 pound bet and it looks like it's mine for the taking right now.

I don't like the 'keepers, both have someone breathing down their necks for starts. One, fine but not both. Who to bench out of that front 8 will annoy the hell out of you, points on the bench ahoy. Liverpool & Spurs' fixtures turn in three weeks, so wouldn't want a defender from each either.

I'd have Richards over Kompany anyway.

I'd want 2 big hitters up front - I think your midfield is too strong - I think you need to downgrade 1 of those and upgrade sturridge personally. Who are you dropping from your front 8? Yak has shown he gets points regardless of who they are playing and the only players you could realistically drop are Sessegnon, Yak & Sturridge. All capable of scoring big in tough games.

I was actually thinking about going with a ridiculously cheap defence with Hart in goal. Now with the Kompany red he should be affordable for the wildcard. The rest of my defence could be scandalously cheap. Santon, Kelly, Shotton, Brown/Bramble if fit.

Im considering the exact same thing with G.Johnson as my 3rd defender each week. However I currently have Williamson over Santon as he is guaranteed to start unless Newc sign anohter CB.

It leaves me with 1.6m in the bank which seems alot of waste but I dont feel like I want to swap any players I currently have.

Raylor cant play at LB defensively and thats why we lost against Chelsea. Raylor got fd over by Sturridge time and time again. He was in the team purely because of his free kicks and balls in the box. So to have him at RM is logical. Taking bartons former role.

Strangely enough it was not the worst tackle (in fact quite the opposite) and at the same time not the worst ref decision (again quite the opposite!)

I currently have Nani, but when I wildcard should I consider getting Valencia instead so that I have the extra money to spread around my team?

That's exactly what i'm doing. Nani could explode against Bolton but Valencia is probably better long-term (if the last few weeks are anything to go by).

With United's fixtures I would say downgrading your coverage is not a bad idea but...

you'll have to live with the inevitable week when Nani explodes. 😯

    Morning All,

Really appreciate some feedback on my transfer(s) this week. Non WC team with 2.9 in bank, which is the better of the three options?

    Vorn Ruddy
    Evans Simspon Kompany Enrique BAE
    Silva Drenthe Nani Bale Moses
    RVP Adebayor Yakubu

    A) Drenthe>Valencia
    B) Drenthe>Dempsey
    C) Adebayor>Aguero and Drenthe>Sessegnon

    Thanks.

    TERRY

Do we know anymore about the charges etc? Think he'd be a great buy for the next 6-7 gameweeks.
