Vincent Kompany receives a four-match ban after picking up his second straight red card of the season. Wayne Rooney bags a brace as United line up a visit to Liverpool in the fourth round of the FA Cup, while James McClean continues to catch the eye of Fantasy managers, with his second goal in as many games:

Ramires
Having played wide right in the last week’s win at Wolves, the Brazilian returned to central midfield for the visit of Portsmouth. Ramires continued his goalscoring exploits, though, following up his strike at Molineux with a double as Chelsea chalked up a somewhat flattering 4-0 win. He also provided an assist for Frank Lampard’s fourth. With Daniel Sturridge still sidelined, Juan Mata took up the wide right role this time and grabbed his sixth domestic goal of the season- every one of them have come at the Bridge.

Wayne Rooney
Dimitar Berbatov didn’t even make the subs bench at the Etihad. The Bulgarian’s brief flirtation with the United first XI wasn’t helped by an insipid display at Newcastle in midweek and Rooney, paired with Danny Welbeck, returned to goalscoring ways with a double in the 3-2 win. That’s 6 goals in his last five starts for the United man and with home clashes against Bolton and Stoke in two of the next three gameweeks, Rooney will surely tempt plenty Fantasy managers to hand him the armband for those games as he threatens to return to the consistency of early season.

Paul Scholes
Although United have been struggling for midfield consistency of late, Scholes’ decision to come out of retirement arguably overshadowed the match itself. A major surprise, given he admitted he felt his legs were gone last season but the only significant aspect of his second half sub appearance was his loss of possession that led to City’s second.

Antonio Valencia
The return of Chris Smalling from tonsillitis allowed Valencia the chance to move back into the midfield once again. Having covered at right-back due to United’s on-going injury worries, his threat has been somewhat nullified but Valencia made an immediate impact back in his favoured position, crossing for Rooney to fire the visitors ahead within the ten minute mark. With Jonny Evans recovered and on the bench, it seems Sir Alex Ferguson’s injury worries are easing up, meaning Valencia can be utilised as an attacking talent by the champions once again.

Sergio Aguero
Another home game, another goal for the Argentine as City battled valiantly to save their cup aspirations. Aguero continues his remarkable streak of form at the Etihad- a look at his FPL stats shows he has returned 10 goals, 4 assists and 14 bonus points at home, compared to 4 goals, 1 assist and 3 bonus points on his travels. With Fulham, Blackburn and Bolton visiting City in three of their next four home games, Aguero offers strong opposition to Robin Van Persie for the armband with those fixtures.

Vincent Kompany
The City skipper now faces a four-match ban after picking up his second red card of the season. Kompany received his marching orders with a mere eleven minutes on the board for a two-footed tackle on Nani and will now miss the upcoming league clashes with Wigan and Spurs, in addition to both the club’s Carling Cup semi-final legs against Liverpool. Roberto Mancini admitted post-match that City will appeal, but if the ban stands, it gives Kompany’s Fantasy owners something of a quandary- currently at 6.6, do they hold on until he is next available on 1st February or move him on with their winter wildcards?

Stephane Sessegnon
Having mainly been deployed in a role just off the main forward by both his managers over the season, Sessegnon led the line for Sunderland at Peterborough yesterday. Nicklas Bendtner was nowhere to be seen but despite three recognised forwards on the bench, O’Neill still preferred Sessegnon as his main striker in a 4-5-1. He may have failed to play a part in any of his side’s two goals but O’Neill’s lineup continues to promote the Benin international as a strong out-of-position contender over the months ahead.

James McClean
The Irishman seems to have the backing of O’Neill and once again vindicated his manager’s faith, playing a prominent role in the Black Cats win. Despite the return of Seb Larsson, McClean kept his place in the first XI, with Kieran Richardson handed a role in central midfield. McClean had already caught the eye of Fantasy managers in his previous two league games, picking up maximum bonus both times and netting in the 4-1 win over Wigan. He continued his goalscoring ways yesterday, notching Sunderland’s second, in addition to picking up an assist for Larsson’s free-kick opener. At 4.5, he’s starting to attract investment and if he continues his recent form, could prove an absolute bargain in the second half of the season.

    Hey Guys

Is it worth keeping Roonpig for GK 22 & 23 and then bring in Aguero for GK 24 or should I just change to Aguero from GK 22?

I'm just wondering whether Roonpig with shred Bolton apart this week?

McClean has the greater promise in my opinion, although I would like to see a little more before drafting him in personally. I feel like I've seen enough of Moses to stay clear this season - he's never going to set the world on fire. Wigan's fixtures don't fill me with great confidence either, whereas GW22 & 23 for Sunderland could be pretty tasty.

    Mignolet/Vorm

Team is looking good. I think the J.Evans bandwagon is over now. It hasn't really materialised. Better off with Senderos, Caulker, Rangel. They will all play.

Valenica wide right from now on I reckon. Altough United are cursed at the back so you never know.

not the best combination, generally whoever has lindegaard have a the 2nd "not that good" so lindegaard is first choice and the other one comes with the automatic substitution
in ur case u might play hart every week which makes the likes of mignolet and ruddy more appealing due to their reduced price

I really dont understand this philosophy because surely it is 50/50 on whether or not Lindy will play and as such you could end up playing your cheapy keeper in his most difficult games. Im staying well clear.

I still think Fergie will rotate the two keepers. Neither look particularly awesome. Good fixtures for City so you're gonna end up playing him every week especially with his price tag.

I'm Wildcarding before GW23 and Hart is in there. It gives you City defensive coverage and there's no need to concern yourself over rotation and all the other Keeper Quandries.

I haven't ruled out doubling up though.

Even if he is back he will be tired and not on his best. Happened previous years too. Cahill in example last year. He had excellent first half and have never rediscovered his form in the second part. I am planing without him and will give him several weeks. I think that Ba won't be good value till end of the season. I might be wrong but after GW 30 is the earliest IMO.

Then I will consider him, but I'd rather would be one week too late than 4 GW's to early, That is the logic I am trying to sell here. It is from previous experience playing FF. Well remember this discussion and we reassess when he comes back.

Quick question regarding my Sky FF captain. DGW for Bale at home to Everton (7:45 Wed) & Wolves (3:00 Sat) or Rooney home to Bolton.

Rooney could score big here so i'm thinking captaining could pay off.

Or do I go with the sensible DGW and Bale to outscore Rooney over 2 matches?

    RM slightly left wing WCT

    Friedel / (Sorenson)
    G.Johnson / Santon / Williamson / (Senderos) / (Kelly)
    Silva / Gerrard / Bale / Dempsey / (Mclean)
    RVP / Aguero / Welbeck

    0.1m left in bank

    So, the plan is…

    1. Friedel / Sorenson rotate each week giving a good home fixture each week
    2. Santon & Williamson / Senderos & Kelly rotate each week giving a good home fixture each week
    3. Welbeck is a one week punt at home to Bolton, thn Mclean will play the following two GW’s in which he has decent home fixtures and in the meantime I will use a free transfer to swap Welbeck to a striker with decent fixtures when Mclean doesnt play.
    4. G.Johnson is in for his next 3 decent fixtures and will then be replaced with Richards/Kompany

I know alot of people dont like doubling up on defenders but it is a risk I want to take as I am chasing a big lead.

Is Gerrard a better punt than Carroll?
Is Welbeck likely to play the next game?

    Thanks for any input.

A little background info on the reasons behind Sigurðsson’s loan move to Swansea. He was top scorer last season for his German club TSG Hoffenheim with nine goals, but came back injured from the summer U-21 championships and has struggled for both fitness and form this season, playing in only 6 out of 17 Bundesliga matches before the winter break. This was partly tactical, as he doesn’t fit into new Hoffenheim coach Holger Stanislawski’s midfield formation, but Sigurðsson is evidently also some way short of match fitness at the moment.

There’s clearly been a falling out too between Sigurðsson and Stanislawski, and there are rumours that the Icelander’s father had a blazing row with the coach. Sigurðsson arranged the loan deal himself through his agent and didn’t bother to inform Stanislawski personally of the move. “If he doesn’t want to play here, I don’t need to try to change his mind. It’s a waste of time”, retorted Stanislawski. It’s believed that Hoffenheim wouldn’t stand in Sigurðsson’s way if he wanted to leave permanently, although a transfer clause hasn’t been written into the loan deal.

        Cheers, as ever.

So how short of match fitness do you think he is? I've got him pencilled in for my wildcard team for week 24, hoping he'll have cemented his place in the Swansea XI by then.

You've presumably seen a lot more of him in the last couple of years than most. He'll walk into the Swansea team, yeah?

Exactly my plan. Going to rotate him and Moses for my 4th midfield slot, while playing my other 6 attacking players every week. Only Moses's fixtures from week 24 onwards are ridiculous... Could easily bench Sigurdsson for about the first six weeks after my wildcard. Moses:

EVE bol AVL SWA nor WBA

You still going with the expensive defence?

mclean could be a nice 2-week punt then switch to sigurdsson. i posted earlier about taking a 2week punt on a chelsea player then switching to aguero/silva rather than just starting with them, any thoughts?

silva n aguero seem to hard to leave out so my current defence is

              hart, lindegaard
              simpson, santon, vermaelen, senderos, kelly

Yeah, probably swapping Bradley Johnson for McClean next week for SWA NOR. Then I'll be wildcarding so it wouldn't exactly be a straight swap McClean > Sigurdsson.

Not going with any Stoke defenders? I'm most likely going with both Huth and Shawcross for the first four weeks after I wildcard.

                SUN ful SWA NOR

Fancy at least a couple of goals between them in those games.

On peak form and fitness (i.e. last season in the Bundesliga), Sigurðsson would walk into a Swansea team that badly needs to improve its attacking output. He just hasn't been at the races since the U-21 championships though, so I'd monitor the situation first. At £5.0m, he could be a bargain - if he gets regular appearances in a Swansea team that's now got a lot of midfielders.

Anyone else waiting until GW24 to use their wildcard? I can see the temptation to do so now, but

    a) I've got 3 Spurs players, and their fixtures are pretty good up until GW24
    b) It allows time to see how teams' transfers affect starting line-ups
    c) It gives us time to assess the likes of Gylfi, Henry, Gary Cahill etc.

Even if I was WC'ing GW24, Cahill and Henry wouldn't be there, and I can easily transfer in Sigurdsson later on.
Not saying waiting is a bad decision, mind you.

Plenty of wildcard bandwagons (Shotton, McLean etc). I'm just worried that Stoke go out and buy a right winger, Sunderland go out and buy a left winger, and it's two wasted transfers.

Not saying I'm right, just seems to be a lot of early wildcard love.

Right then, quick WC poll question:

    A - Nani and Ade

    or

    B - Valencia and Aguero

Already have silva but no other spurs players (doing Bale to Dempsey in gw 23) so leaning towards A at the mo, although nani on the left does worry me...

    Cheers

So Kalou off to Arsenal ey?
I take it this signals the end of Arshavin? Will Kalou will provide cover and rotation with Theo and Gervinho? Could be a decent pick later in the season - fantastic points per minute in previous seasons despite not actually being a very good player.

I'd wait until the move is actually confirmed before speculating. Kalou is linked with Arsenal in every transfer window, and [annoyingly] nothing ever happens.

But, if it does happen, Arsenal fans are going to be tearing their hair out watching Theo, Gervinho and Kalou clown around on the wings. 😉

He just has to be utilised in the right way, which is bring him on with 10 mins to go when your side is 3-0 up and the other side is chasing the game, then hes great!
