West Bromwich Albion have bolstered their defensive options with the signing of Egyptian international Ahmed Hegazi on a season-long loan, with the option to make the move permanent next summer.

The 26-year-old joins from Egyptian side Al Ahly, and according to Baggies head coach Tony Pulis, will be a welcome new face at the Hawthorns:

“We’re pleased he’s here, he’s a good addition. He’s got good pedigree and has played for some good clubs. Hopefully, he’ll be a good signing for us. With it being a loan and, if he does well, we’ve already agreed a final deal. It’s really, really good for us.”

The History

Hegazi began his youth career at Egyptian club Ismaily, and progressed to make 28 appearances for the first-team between 2009 and 2012, scoring one goal.

In December 2011, Italian side Fiorentina agreed to pay € 1.5 million for the centre-back, but he would only make four appearances in all competitions over the next three years, with injuries – including reconstructive surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament – severely disrupting his progress.

He spent the second half of the 2014/15 campaign on loan at Serie B outfit Perugia and featured 10 times, before moving to Al Ahly in September 2015.

Hegazi chalked up 56 appearances over the past two seasons, registering two goals and one assist, and was a key member of the side that won back-to-back league titles.

It’s on the international stage where Hegazi has really made his mark, though.

He made his senior debut against Sierra Leone in September 2011 and has made 39 appearances for his country, producing one goal and two assists.

Hegazi shone at the 2017 African Cup of Nations as Egypt advanced all the way to the final, only to lose 2-1 to Cameroon, with the centre-back named in the team of the tournament.

The Prospects

With Pulis having few defensive alternatives outside of Craig Dawson, Gareth McAuley, Jonny Evans, Allan Nyom and the versatile Chris Brunt, the need to bring in reinforcements ahead of the new season was obvious.

Standing at 6ft 5in tall, Hegazi’s aerial prowess seems well-suited to Pulis’ ideal profile for a central defender. Providing he settles in England, he should provide solid competition for Evans and – in particular – McAuley.

Hegazi will relish coming up against big target men, although he does lack pace and could struggle when left one-on-one against pacey attackers.

But given Pulis’ preference for a deep defensive line to limit the space behind the back four, Hegazi shouldn’t find himself exposed on too many occasions.

The Baggies often retreat to the edge of their own penalty area, deploying a rigid back four with additional screening by central midfielders. Hegazi’s strength and positional awareness in that scenario will be key factors.

The Egyptian looks destined, at least initially, to be the back-up behind McAuley as he’s eased into his new surrounds. But he could get a chance sooner than expected if the Northern Ireland international’s thigh problem fails to clear over the next few weeks.

McAuley is also turning 38 in December and is unlikely he’ll be able to start every match. He was withdrawn early in fixtures throughout April and May, with a season of hard knocks taking their toll. That recognition of the centre-back’s tiring legs is perhaps a hint of what’s to come over the new campaign.

Pulis does have Dawson as an option in central defence and could shift Nyom to right-back, deploying Chris Brunt on the left. However, if Hegazi settles quickly, he looks a natural successor to McAuley alongside club skipper Evans – not least because of his towering presence at set-plays.

Crucially, Hegazi has been handed a starting price of 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), making him the cheapest Baggies defender in the game. The same applies in Sky Sports, with the new recruit priced at just 6.2.

But given the goal threat of McAuley and Dawson, along with the two West Brom goalkeepers proving very popular as an 8.5 “fire and forget” combination, Hegazi will struggle to make an early impression on Fantasy managers.

Baggies defensive assets are set to be in demand as we select our Gameweek 1 squads, due primarily to their very favourable opening schedule (BOU, bur, STO, bha, WHM).

Ben Foster is currently sitting in 20.6% of squads, while McAuley boasts an ownership of 11.6%.

Fantasy managers will be hoping they can improve on the meagre six clean sheets they managed last term. The fact that they ranked ninth for fewest shots conceded from inside the box last term offers hope they can do just that.

West Brom’s pre-season matches should provide further insight as to how Hegazi is settling in. Indeed, he was immediately handed a starting role alongside Evans against Leicester City on Wednesday, with Nyom and Dawson stationed at full-back.

Ultimately, Hegazi’s Fantasy potential may depend on how much Pulis decides to manage McAuley’s minutes.

If he can cement a regular role, the new arrival could certainly play a part in our thinking as a route into a West Brom outfit that scored 16 goals from corners in 2016/17 – more than any other side.

      Source?

      I've got this one:

      http://www.leparisien.fr/sports/football/psg/mercato-neymar-alexis-sanchez-le-psg-s-enflamme-19-07-2017-7142994.php

For €40M-€50M, that looks like a bargain.

However, I'm not sure they're looking to buy him yet, as they try to get Neymar, and according to Catalan reports the deal is close to done.

      http://www.ccma.cat/catradio/alacarta/programa/neymar-molt-a-prop-del-psg/audio/970925/

I don't see them buying both of them, unless they're selling Lucas AND Di Maria for some semi-decent money.

More probably, Sanchez is a backup plan, if they don't get Neymar - and they'll still sell Lucas or AdM (more probably Lucas). Neymar-Mbappé-Sanchez looks like the order of preference now for Emery, and I don't think they'll get more than one:

      http://www.paristeam.fr/transferts/psg-emery-veut-du-lourd-pour-le-mercato-psg-emery-veut-du-lourd-pour-le-mercato-29286.htm

Le Parisien above said that PSG is not going to pay the €220M clause for Neymar, and Barça has stated they're not lowering the price. That makes me wonder why they're so hopeful? Maybe they're selling Verratti to Barça in return? That could in fact be a win-win for both sides, both would be getting the kind of player they need more.

But if not, and Mbappé looking unlikely to move to PSG now, then obviously Sanchez to PSG looks more and more likely. And if the price indeed is below €50M, darn, I'd just take that deal anyway and see what else I can get. Maybe that's what they're doing.

This is the source, I meant:

        http://www.leparisien.fr/sports/football/psg/psg-la-piste-alexis-sanchez-n-est-pas-abandonnee-17-07-2017-7140339.php

Other article from same paper. It says Bayern is not in for Sanchez anymore, but that since Monaco turned PSG's offers down, they're reactivating Sanchez bid. So it claims that PSG is in contacts with Sanchez's agent, that Sanchez is interested, that they would prefer Mbappé, and that they'll sell Lucas if they get Sanchez.

Le Parisien is often in the know on PSG. Doesn't mean they're in the know on Sanchez and Arsenal though. It still may be that Sanchez just wants a higher salary at Arsenal.

Anyone considering a Lukaku/ Rashford attack?
It does mean pulling either a defender or Pogba/ Miki from the midfield, but looking at pre-season. Rashford looks like he could take off this season. 7.5 million for him could seem like peanuts in a few months.

Pre-season knee jerk or promise of something special, you beat me to it.

My dilemma now is Josh King (Spurs bound?) or Rashford, I do like a strike partnership and Rashford looks quick and strong so if he is played on the wing like he was against Man City then he could prove to be a bargain, especially considering Man Utd's early fixtures.

Anyone else feel the members area could be improved at all? I absolutely love the access to the data for the price but there's a couple of things I'd like to change:

    - logging in twice is frustrating
    - tables aren't great on mobile, the tooltips don't always appear to explain what the acronyms means
    - searching for players like Cèdric means you have to enter special characters like è
    - there should be a members forum to discuss stats because a reasonable discussion is impossible on the comment boards.

Definitely not nailed. In fact not in the 1st choice XI. He'll get game time though and probably against the weaker teams or as sub when Spurs are chasing the game so he could be really high scorer on those occasions. He's injured at the moment though and unlikely to make the start of the season so don't put him in your starting team.

Seeing lots of RMT's that aren't paying enough attention to captain picks imo.

There are loads of good players in the prem and it's really easy to make a list of the ones that may do well...however...FPL is a game about pts and the most important player, by far, is the captain pick.

Maybe a fire and forget captain with Kane may work but in general at least two picks are needed to ensure we get the right captain for an easy fixture...or preferably three.

With a regular "not captain pick" we are hoping for between 5-10 pts with a bit of luck, whilst a good captain pick, on a good fixture, can yield 20-25 pts...and then there are the really good weeks !!...

The likes of Aguero (c) and Kane (c) against Huddersfield is where the big pts are. Don't dilute the captain picks too much folks.

Some are doing their best to just have one reliable captain. That's fine until we realise that we miss out on an easy fixtures for the other captain picks.

The first port of call should be which 2/3 captain picks rotate best to maximise captain pts...not whether Huddersfield and Brighton rotate well in defence...or getting Bertie instead of Cedric.

Rotating captains, I see now. Yeah its not something I've put much thought into, generally captaincy picks play for teams good enough to perform home and away. Its all about having strong fixtures.

Aye. We only need to make sure we have two maybe three of them in the right combination...and there really aren't many good captain picks anyway.

Once we work out those to maximise good fixtures then we fill in the rest...

Not if you only have, say, Kane and San(c)hez. Then the NL derby falls on the same day as United home to Newcastle or Citeh home to Swansea and you have no coverage. This is why three options is always my preference

Huddersfield are the type of team who'll sneak on a 12th man and spend the whole game on the edge of the box..

Not sure what RMTs you're looking at. By default, almost every team has 2-3

Most teams have two of Kane, Lukaku, and Agüero/Jesus, then there's Alli too. Don't think anyone is ignoring that man.

Quite a few were last night after the announcement of Hernandez.

We have a good choice of mid priced/cheap fwds this year that are turning some heads to wondering if they can get away with just one premium pick up front...

I think you're spot on with this. Most of my drafts have been Kane-less. Looking at GW3...he's essential.

Although the price for Sanchez is a bit ridiculous this year his potential for explosive points returns can't be ignored how many weeks did he have with double digit returns last year I think it's one of those players if u don't babe can make a big difference in private leagues always a great reliable captain pick from midfield too

Strong rumours (from ex-player) that Sanchez to Man City is highly likely

12mill for a rotation risk if he moves? Or will he be a solid starter, in that line-up? A big scramble for funds maybe

They won't sell to a rival
Mate they have already said he's staying and he will either sign a contract this season or leave on a free either way he's not Gona coast through the season he'll want to win

Sanchez to PSG is now very likely in my opinion.
Wenger has great relationships with PSG. It will also means PSG won't be chasing for Mbappé anymore if Sanchez signs and that MBappé could be more likely to go to Arsenal (which I believe is a possibility)

I agree with Adrian Durham on this one. Why would the hottest young property in European footballs go to a club with no champions league?

If at the start of the season he looks like he's staying, people will be tearing up their teams to put him back in.

What is Willian's playing time looking like this season? He's in a lot of teams so are we assuming he's nailed in place of Pedro?

Haz is out at the start of the season, I think that's why he's so popular. After that it'll be a wait and see. Depending on Zaha's start to the season there could be an easy switch out.

Mkhi is a wonderful player but can't be trusted as a FPL player. Too much of a rotation risk unfortunatelly. The guy could be scoring 3 double digits in a row and be replaced by mata the game after..

I'm trying to have a 5.5 GK, a 6.5 def, a 9.5 mid and now thinking of ditching Lacazette for Kane who's the most expensive forward.
The target is to be able to easily transfer to other big hitters in each position without needing double moves to make the needed money which would also cost a hit.
    Does it make sense?

You've gotta play your own game imo. No point sacrificing the players you actually want for the flexibility of being able to get in guys down the road after they've already scored their points.

It does - as long as the rest of the your team isn't compromised too much.

Having said that, most of us wildcard within the first month or so, so maybe a consideration for then rather than now?

I don't like to transfer goalkeepers too much, so wouldn't worry about that spot myself.

    A. Kane - Lacazette - Rashford (downgrade from Alli to Willian in midfield)

    or

    B. Lukaku - Jesus - J Rod (Keep Alli in midfield as Spurs cover)

I keep coming back to this side - pretty well balanced, provides "coverage" of the big teams and is flexible in terms of formation:

    Foster (Myhill)
    Monreal, Cedric, Ake (Mee, Long)
    Countinho, Sane, Alli, Willian (Carroll)
    Kane, Lukaku, Ayew

    Coutinho could be Salah.
    Ake could be Daniels.
Willian could be Ramsey (and have no Chelsea coverage)
Sane could be KDB - if I downgrade Willian to a 5.5 like Fraser/Iwobi.

    Any thoughts?

Just my opinion but I think Arsenal's fixtures aren't the best for clean sheets so I'd rather have Trippier over Monreal? Plus Trippier could be a cash cow.

Thanks - you might well be right there.

Plenty of options at 5.5 (including Trippier), so will watch pre-season with interest.

At the same time, it seems foolish to go without any Arsenal players, when they don't have the distraction of the Champion's League......

Finding it tough. City, United, Arsenal, Spurs mids all play as providers for their striker so, how to choose 3/4?

    Aguero
    Lukaku
    Lacazette
    Kane

With Liverpool you just select a mid and hope.......

With so much choice, I guess it comes down to security of starts and security of position.

Which means Kane and Lukaku for me. Lacazette will play, but maybe as a 2nd striker.

Plus - it is easier to "downgrade" Kane and Lukaku if necessary, then to get them in.
