It is probably fair to say that many Fantasy Premier League managers are currently at critical overload levels. When the prices came out, teams were made, templates were formed and it all seemed relatively straight forward.

But a few weeks on and the situation has become murkier by the day. Pre-season has thrown up a number of intriguing possibilities, new players have been added to the game, and we are all being bombarded by many a so called guru, giving their opinions on formations, personnel and tactics.

Twitter, the forums and other social media are filled with anxious managers, desperate to find the best mix between players and formation, all trying to juggle their 100 million  budget to cover every eventuality.

The result of this manic attempt to find the ultimate team is more confusion, uncertainty and mental clutter, which results in ever more outlandish attempts being made.

We see ever stranger formations and setups, top heavy, bottom heavy, Five at the back etc. What seemed a simple game suddenly becomes overly complex and unsolvable.

It’s enough to make even a mild mannered manager like Arsene Wenger scream.

False solutions

The solution to all this mental clutter is not to artificially reduce options. I saw one manager who was only picking players with a surname starting with the letter L.  Perhaps the desire to escape the anguish and stress of information overload was so great that his mind created this artificial solution, just for peace of mind.

This is the danger, that the brain can become so overloaded that it will seek an easy way out; all plans are thrown in the bin and a last minute team is picked just to remove the stress.

How often have you planned for something for weeks, and then at the last moment knee jerked in previously overlooked players simply to ease brain ache?

The best solution

Left unchecked the information overload will continue to escalate. What is needed is a step back to de-clutter your brain.

The reality is until the charity shield has been played and initial lineups become clearer there is little point stressing over players to include. Better to just sit back, relax and take a few days break. This is the time to re charge the batteries, and let all the information from the last few weeks subconsciously settle down.

Four of Five days with no tinkering, think you can do it? Now is the time to try.

Go back to basics

Once this Sunday’s Community Shield is over, then is the time to build that squad with a fresh mind and a clear plan. After a few days off it is very likely that it will all seem much easier. Those crazy plans to spend 30m on defence will be but a distant memory.

For myself that means wheeling out a tried and tested template and just fill in the blanks with proven, decent Fantasy assets that have good fixtures and no negatives hanging over them.

No sicknotes, card magnets or marginal players. No trying to overly scrimp on the money at the expense of bringing in players likely to only start one or two matches. I did this myself last season, and it did not turn out well.

No player is essential, if a player does not fit into the template then pick another, do not bend the structure out of shape or change formation simply because of an irrational fear over not owning a player. The cure is worse than the disease.

This team below was built around this tried and proven balanced 3-4-3 structure by those following my FPL Transfer Hub blog, in which the players were slotted in via polls. If a player did not fit the structure he was ignored.

The team is currently being left and is in its de-clutter stage until after the Community Shield when it will be revisited, with some picks possibly replaced.

The final process will be easy and straight forward as we will be approaching the final votes with a clear head, and armed with up to date information. With a clear framework to work around, the process will be smooth and easy.

Pre-season may have shown that Liverpool’s Sadio Mane is a better pick than Spurs midfielder Dele Alli. To make that change is easy in this structure. We should know if Cedric will start by then. If fatigue from his international exertions this summer means he misses out then his team mate Maya Yoshida can slot in.

See how having a clear structure will make the process easy. No need to overclutter the brain trying to find square pegs for round holes. Plug and play is the key.

Conclusion

If you are feeling overwhelmed by the seemingly endless choices and permutations then take a chill pill and have the next Five days off. Return refreshed and revitalised with a clear plan, and a fearless heart.

If that fails just copy the above team. But if you take a step back and de-clutter there should be no need for copying, it will all seem much easier after a few days break.

By coincidence I've just done this. While away on holiday for a week I didn't give myself internet access. Very liberating and also meant I was free of any chat or information about my FPL side.

When I came back I looked at it fresh - but didn't actually change it much at all. Only Suttner in for Dunk, due to impressing in pre season reports.

Other than that the 3-4-3 remained...the balance remained and my initial thoughts haven't changed too much.

Who knows how many changes I would have made last week if I had access to it.

I always feel my first squad doesn't have to be perfect, I am more than likely going to tear it up in 3 weeks anyway on a Wildcard!

I was on holiday last week and ended up creating a second team based on differentials I think will do well.

Now I have 2 head aches

Is Stones, KDB & Jesus to much? Maybe Jesus to Lacazette?

    VDS, Elliot
    Cedric, Tripper, Dawson, Stones, Hunemeier
KDB, Ali, Ritchie, James Ward Prose, Carroll
    Jesus, Lukaku, Defo

The other thing to remember is that chances are some of us will be Wildcarding in the International break leading up to GW4. So even if you make an absolute horlicks of the first 3 weeks, you can start afresh and this time armed with 3 weeks worth of info.

My other advice would be to start with a few template picks in there (Lukaku, KDB, Trippier etc) but then mix in a few differentials as well to make you stand out from the crowd (Valencia? Tadic? J-Rod?)

Hi All wondered if I could possibly get a RMT for my first draft?

    Foster - Elliot
    Walker - Keane - Zaba - Simpson - Hunemeier
    Pogba - Alli - KDB - Kante - Loftus-Cheek
    Lukaku - Jesus - Chicha

    Thanks in advance 🙂

I would get rid of Kante. He may be an amazing player but not great FPL wise as he will get 2 or 3 points most weeks.

Everton have awful fixtures so maybe think about Keane in defence.

You could...Bin Keane after wk1. West Ham are terrible and away at Man Ute so bin Hernández for Austin(?) and upgrade Kante to a 5.5 player. Options options

Is this team okay for first 3 GWks??

    Foster
    Bertrand/ Trippier/ Daniels/ Dunk*/ Rangel*
    Sane/ Salah/ Zaha/ RLC/ Ritchie*
    Austin/ Kane/ Lukaku(c)

    * Players are on bench... Got 1.5 ITB... Any inprovement advise is welcome....

Sane might be subject to rotation apparently. Otherwise looks good.

Maybe take Rangel up to a 4.5, Naughton?

Wouldn't have zaha and RLC both in there, particularly starting. Palace's fixtures don't warrant a double up

If you've got 1.5m left and you're only looking short term anyway, what about Sane > KDB? Less of a rotation risk I think.

  8. Harmonica1967

Verdict on this? This would be starting gw1, but the bench are all rotation options thereafter

    Foster (Elliot)
    Tripp-Ake-Bertrand (Dunk, Mee)
    Alli-Mane-Ritchie-Willian (RLC)
    Jesus-Lukaku-Benteke

No Kane, but I'm hoping Alli covers him off and it saves a fair bit of money for elsewhere. Would have liked KdB as well, but I feel like Jesus is almost as assured a starter.

    RMT please:

    De Gea
    Alonso, Trippier, Daniels, Yoshida
    KDB(C), Salah,Willian,Zaha
    Lukaku(V), Rooney

    Heaton, J.Rod, Caroll, Dunk

    Nothing left in the bank.

I am not planning to go for Alli, Eriksen or Kane fro GW1, probably will choose someone when using Wildcard or during the next GWs.

    My thoughts for possible changes:
1)Dunk and De Gea to Ake and Forster
2)Lukaku to Jesus and spend 1.0 elsewhere

Everton have horrible fixtures and Rooney is well past his best so to have him as your second striker looks tricky. Think you need to get some money out of defence and perhaps downgrade Zaha to rebalance

My team is built mainly for the first 3 gameweeks, this is why i have avoided any Spurs attacking player. Also, i believe that there will not be many goals in the first matches. This is why my second striker is not one from the top and this is why my defence is expensive. I agree that Rooney is a risk but i believe he has the potential to be part of both Everton's goals and assists even if they do not score so much..

I have DDG for clean sheets and Heaton for save points. I know i could spend 0.5 elsewhere but i will probably use wildcard early.

Would also start Jarod ahead of yoshida, so may aswell downgrade him to a 4.5 depending on when you plan on WC'ing. Would free up an extra 1 mill with those 2 changes to upgrade zaha or rooney

And you have man city coverage with KDB and lose man utd if you swap to Jesus. Also DDG to Forster will give you 2 Southampton at the back who conceded 4 goals in last pre season game

You are right. I am keeping DDG.Regarding man utd coverage, i think that usually will score man utd 1 or 2 goals but city will usually score like 4 goals per match. This is why i am thinking for city double up and skipping utd's attack!

I'm trying not to tinker but...

Key question for me is whether Austin is assured of starts. If he is then he looks the best third striker option to me. If not then I am tempted to spend 1.5m more and get Defoe as don't see much other value at 6.5 and below up front

    1. stat
        8 years, 4 months ago

Another thing to consider about Austin is that even if he is nailed on, he might be subbed off for Gabbiadini if he's not performing. Originally I was going to go with Austin but I don't want to take the risk for a player who might not be nailed on and faces serious competition for his place in the team.

Public Draft leagues are so stupid...after waiting a whole day hoping for a proper draft, players don't show up and they end up with auto-picks (including lots of injured players). Out of 8 players that joined, only 3 were active...awful. And now I can't exit this useless league...
