Marcos Alonso nets twice at Wembley as Harry Kane’s August woes continue. Meanwhile, Aaron Mooy picks up the points again as Huddersfield Town maintain their 100% start to the season.

Here are the notes from Sunday’s brace of matches.

Peerless Alonso at the double

Marcos Alonso recovered from a zero-point return against Burnley in some style by bagging both goals in today’s 2-1 Wembley Stadium win over Spurs.

That disappointing tally against the Clarets had persuaded over 72,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to transfer out the Chelsea wing-back, yet his underlying numbers that day hinted at what was to follow – five efforts on goal in Gameweek 1 was more than any defender.

After last term’s six goals and five assists, it’s somewhat understandable that the Spaniard is the priciest defender on option in FPL at 7.0.

Despite an average of 5.7 points per match in the previous campaign, most have baulked at that cost, with just 11% currently owning Alonso.

Today’s 16-point haul once again reminded us that when it comes to premium priced picks at the back, the Spaniard remains peerless as a supplier of explosive returns.

David Luiz also remains a factor as a cheaper route into the Blues’ backline, though.

Stationed in front of the back-three as Antonio Conte opted for a 3-1-4-1-1 formation, he was brought down for Alonso’s free-kick opener, earning an assist to add to his goal against Burnley last weekend.

Priced at 6.0, he’s the most popular defender in FPL and sits in over 25% of squads.

Luiz fired a reasonable 31 efforts on goal last season – ranked sixth among defenders. So far, he’s registered four efforts in the first two Gameweeks – only Alonso, with seven, has managed more from the back.

Batshuayi back to bench-warming

Five goals in pre-season suggested that Michy Batshuayi could cement an early-season role on Antonio Conte’s teamsheet.

But the Belgian was named among the subs at Wembley due to the tactical reshuffle, with new boy Alvaro Morata handed a first start after his goal and assist off the bench last week.

Batshuayi started just one league match under Conte in 2016/17, with 19 further outings as a substitute. Given that his main impact was to nod Christian Eriksen’s free-kick past his own goalkeeper, it’s a fair bet that Morata looks set to lead the line at home to Everton next weekend.

Kane’s testing our patience

The hoodoo continues, but it’s certainly not for a lack of trying.

Shown the door by over 164,000 FPL managers last week, Harry Kane has now failed to score in all 12 Premier League appearances in August and returned back-to-back single-point returns after earning his second yellow card of the season.

But the underlying numbers could barely be more encouraging. He produced eight shots, with a total of six efforts in the box equal to Chelsea. He also hit the woodwork for a second successive Gameweek.

So far, Kane has registered 14 attempts in two matches, at least six more than any other forward. At this point last term, he’d managed six shots.

A home clash against Burnley surely offers him the tonic to address that lack of cutting edge, with the Spurs striker among the main captaincy contenders for Gameweek 3.

If he fails against the Clarets, though, the exodus will surely accelerate to new levels over the international break.

Eriksen delivers as Spurs show Wembley promise

While Kane spurned chance after chance, Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli mustered just a single effort apiece, with Conte’s decision to crowd out the midfield denting their goal threat.

Once again, though, the Dane’s set-piece duties came to fruition – an assist for Batshuayi’s own goal takes him to three for the season.

Sitting in 18% of squads to Alli’s 37% and Kane’s 31%, Eriksen is now up to third in the midfield standings behind United pair Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan on 19 points, and level with the top-scoring forward, Romelu Lukaku.

Spurs’ toils at Wembley continue, then – it’s now two wins, one draw and eight losses in 11 competitive matches at the venue.

However, the statistics suggest it’s not all doom and gloom. Mauricio Pochettino’s team outshot Chelsea by 18 shots to nine, though, firing 10 efforts inside the box – almost identical to their respective tallies of 19.6 and 10.2 at White Hart Lane last season.

Mooy moves into double figures

Aaron Mooy’s goal kept Huddersfield’s perfect Premier League record intact while cementing his emergence as a go-to budget midfielder.

The Australian followed up an assist at Crystal Palace with the winner against Newcastle United, from an Elias Kachunga assist. That took him up to 16 points in FPL and confirmed him as the most productive midfielder for 5.5 or less – indeed, Mooy is the top ranked midfield for value in terms of points per million.

Mooy’s ownership close to doubled after his role in the 3-0 opening day win as he continues to impress from a position that, on the face of it, doesn’t exactly scream offensive threat.

But despite operating from a deep-lying role in the double-pivot, he’s led the way for the Terriers for touches in the final third over the first two fixtures.

Add in the fact that he’s also the side’s primary set-piece taker and it’s clear to see why he has such potential for attacking returns.

Huddersfield’s kindly opening schedule continues for another four Gameweeks, giving Mooy further chances to build on his impressive start to the season.

Mounie misfires

If Mooy’s ownership burst into life following the Palace win, striker Steve Mounie’s practically exploded.

Over 160,000 managers brought him in on the back of his brace at Selhurst Park, only to see their new budget third striker fail to spark against Newcastle.

A booking kept him to just one point from a tepid afternoon in which he managed only two penalty area touches and zero attempts.

The 6.1-priced striker will hope for considerably better days as Huddersfield move onto fixtures with Southampton and Leicester City at home and trips to West Ham and Burnley.

Terriers keeping it tight

At least there were no such complaints for those owning Huddersfield’s backline and goalkeeper Jonas Lossl.

The Danish stopper made it back-to-back clean sheets and save points and is the only keeper to earn FPL bonus in both Gameweeks.

In front of him, two fellow 4.5-priced assets continue to rake in the returns as well.

Zanka, now the side’s most popular player with 5.1% ownership, and Christopher Schindler have both enjoyed good bonus returns to add to their shut-out points, with the latter bagging a maximum against Newcastle.

The German centre-half registered an eye-opening 17 clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI), won five of six tackles and all four of his aerial duels in a towering defensive display.

Small wonder that three Huddersfield players now grace the top ten for points scored by defenders (Chris Lowe is also in there) and all three are the cheapest on that list.

Gayle lacking force

Dwight Gayle hit 23 goals to help Newcastle back into the Premier League at the first attempt.

His own return to the top flight has been deeply underwhelming.

Gayle managed 52 minutes at Huddersfield before being subbed off having mustered just a single attempt.

His replacement, new signing Joselu, proceeded to have four attempts – all of them on target – in an all-action 38-minute display.

Gayle (6.5) sits in 2.3% of FPL squads, the 5.5-priced Joselu in 0.2%, but it is the latter who has made a convincing case for inclusion when West Ham visit on Saturday.

Newcastle have yet to score this season, which only strengthens the lively Joselu’s case, particularly as Rafa Benitez’s side still have a very attractive schedule stretching all the way to a Gameweek 11 clash with Bournemouth.

I will say selling Danilo is a better choice. Mendy is about to recover. Danilo is prone to rotation very soon.

In contrast, when Kos recovers, Kola is very likely to take the LWB role. Both Ox and Bellerin played LWB in previous two matches, and clearly both performed better at RWB, especially Ox. Bellerin sees a lot of the ball at LWB, but none of his work turned into end result on paper, so I guess he will lose both WB positions very soon. Barca has bought Semedo and he played excellent yesterday. Now Barca is far less likely to buy Bellerin that Wenger will feel more comfy to put Bellerin on bench.

To anyone thinking of bringing Trippier in I'd advise you to watch the replay before doing so.

Despite any comments being made, a player doesn't wave to the bench in the manner in which he did if it was just a minor knock.

I'm not saying it's 100% bad news, just don't burn a transfer before more solid info comes to light during the week.

        Yeah good idea.

Even if you have to swallow a rise on Trippier it would be worth it, especially as his concern at the time indicated it was the same ankle he just returned from.

Hopefully he's ok and we find out for sure early this week.

Seems unlikely as Aurier rarely plays there and Poch seems to prefer a more commanding type like Dier. He just bought Sanchez to play CB.

Alli to Pogba only makes sense if you can spend that $1.4 meaningfully. For example from a $4.0 defender to Trippier

if your money has no use now, I will definitely not sell Alli to Pogba.

TOT fixture is better than MU from GW 3 to 8. It's actually time to buy TOT players, not to sell.

If you are super short-term and just looking at the upcoming gameweek, I will say up against no Micheal Keane's Burley is better to face the Harry Mcguire's Leicester. Alli is better than Pogba this gameweek. To recall, Pogba scored better than Alli in previous 2 gameweeks simply becoz the ease of fixture. I have three MU players including Pogba and none from Spurs myself. There is only one reason I did so, fixture.

If you talk about price, Pogba climbs already. Price moves far far slower this season. No need to rush. I always early trade last season, but will revert to the opposite strategy this season.

Thanks to your thanks, bro 🙂

I just made a very brief of my full thoughts.

I try to write a bit more here, wish you don't mind.

Why TOT is better than MU this gameweek:

              About LEI
              (1) Maguire is better than Huth
              (2) LEI played CL last season, hampered PL performance
              (3) Only having Huth and Morgan last season. Benalouane or any other 3rd CB option are terrible. I remember Fuchs needs to play CB as well, that's a disaster. Both Morgan and Huth got injured at different timing last season, which hampered their defensive record
              (4) Impact of Ranieri saga. Performance drastically improved after his sack, and seems that has been carried to this season
All the above issues means that you alter the defensive ability of LEI if you are using last season figure. But I recommend don't read too much of the season before last, when they still have Kante 😛

              About BUR
              (1) Tarkowski is not as bad as Benalouane, but definitely not as good as Michael Keane, in many aspects
              (2) BUR played the same back four regularly last season. Heaton did sit out some matches, but that's it
Simply taking away those non-Heaton match, then discount their defensive record due to reason (1)

You may be surprised by why I think that much. The truth is, I am strongly considering buying and captaining Kane this gameweek.

So my conclusion is, even if Kane was not making 14 attempts in previous two matches, it's still wise to buy and captain him.

Some people still think about the August factor of Kane. Well, the sample size is relatively small if we just take last season into account. Going back for three or four seasons is not so good the refrence.

Some people think about the Wembley factor. I will say the match against Chelsea seems to be a better proof. Perhaps many people don't realize, the size of Wembley is the same as 14 teams in PL, so Spurs has 14 chances to play at such size of pitch every season. Plus the several Wembly experience last season, and Poch draw their facility as the same size of Wembly for training, I will discount this factor a lot.

Case is different between Alli and Pogba though. Kane Vs Kaku are captain choice, money is non-factor. For Alli and Pogba, you won't captain either of them. For 100 points Alli gains, Pogba just needs 84 to match their price value. Like what I said, it all depends on how you setup your remaining team. If acquiring Alli and not Pogba will make another starting player worse for a larger extends (for example ditching Alonso for BDavies/Trippier/Bertrand), then you should consider Pogba + Alonso in long-run.

This season seems to have a lot of middle-to-high price options. Money should be better spread over, and avoid those expensive one that you will rarely captain.

Thus, I will ditch KDB and Jesus very soon, but seems not likely to obtain Alli as well.

Wow buddy! That one hell of a stat you put up there.. you have done a commendable study on why Spurs players are better now than that of Manu.. Interesting theory about Leicester and Burnely.. but I will still give kane time for the band.. Form over fixtures they once said.. but you are right he only needs 90 mins to showcase how destructive he can be.. Cheers and all the best for the next game week mate..

I don't agree with Form over Fixture. It's just becoz it's easy so people say it. We should take all factors into account and conclude a thing called "adjusted form".

                  For example:

After GW1, people think CHE is out of form, but it's the opposite.

CHE scored their 1st goal with 10 men, and the second with 9 men. The toughest part is, CHE was not defending and counter-attacking, they did them when chasing the game!!! In doing so, CHE showed me (1) they are super determined, and (2) they are a lot more superior than Burnley

I personally rated what CHE achieved was a par of how MU scored 4 against whm.

So in terms of "adjusted form", Chelsea is on a high for me.

It's very surprising to see people piling up to captain Kane at GW2. There are many bad news surrounding CHE, but there are two "facts":

                  (1) CHE played very well against Burnley, especially the 2nd half, with 10 or 9 men.

                  (2) Christensen is far weaker than Cahill, but all of a sudden we all forget CHE still has Courtois, Kante, Azpi, Luiz, Rudiger, Bakayoko, Alonso, Moses & Willian. At full team, Conte's CHE is the toughest in PL. With the discount of Cahill and Matic, I will still rate them top-3 defensive quality in PL along with MU and TOT.

You may say a Hazard-less CHE is less dangerous, but CHE is still a unit very hard to play against.

TOT didn't play well before Shelvey's sent-off, so any of their performance after that should be discounted.

For me, CHE showed better "adjusted form" than TOT from my angle.

But people just look how unlucky Kane did not score vs NEW, and the bad result of CHE vs BUR, to say it's a Form team against a No-Form team.

                  Alright, let's talk about gw3:
                  - MU superb in both form and adjusted form
                  - TOT bad form, but good adjusted form, coz they outplayed an exceptionally outstanding CHE
                  - LEI has excellent adjusted form. Beat BRN with ease, and put a performance on par vs ARS
                  - BUR average form, but terrible adjusted form. Losing to a toothless WBA at home is bad, played so terrible against 9-men CHE was even worse.

Captain choice is even more obvious now, right?

Exceptional stat building this! The way you read the game is noteworthy! I would just like to say to you, on your words, I have changed gw3 captain from Kaku to Kane... Judging by your game sense , I know he is going to explode..

    Morning all,

Signed up for membership just before the season kicked off, but just starting to have a play around looking at the various stats and stuff it gives you.

Any top tips on what to look out for or how to get the best out for the membership?

    Cheers,

There are some videos to watch about the tools. If you look back through pre-season articles you could find them.

My first move will be Rangel to a $4.5 playing defender.

Once you setup your defenders with most sub $5, you need all five to be playing and rotate among each other.

I'm liking the look of this season's Watford. I'm finding this the trickiest position to get right (4th mid). I went Groß, but that hasn't worked out yet. Sticking for now though. Need to see more games.

Mooy for short-term, Richar or Jese for long-term

R and J are very likely scores better than Mooy in long-run, in view of their own ability and the team's general attacking flair. But Watford and Stoke are not having the best fixtures that worth to acquire at this moment. $6 is a very tricky price. It's hard to bench, when the defenders at this price looks a lot more valuable to own.

Thus, Mooy could win this battle now if you find yourself will bench this midfielder spot bi-weekly. I would rather spend that $0.5 from Yoshida to Ben Davies.

But when their fixtures improve, buy them, coz you will play them week-in-week-out.

No. Realistically, you only need to look at replacing Atsu, maybe KDB and Tadic if they don't kick on.

I'd take a hit on Atsu and bring in Mooy or someone at that price range.

ok so after transfers this will be my team this gw

            Foster
            B Davies, Stephens, Suttner
            Eriksen, Salah, Pogba, Carroll
            Kane, Lukaku, J Rod

            Subs: Elliot, Fraser, Ake, Ward

I would have taken out kompany, kdb and zaha

Not happy still with alot of my team but unless I take another couple of hits or play wc I am stuck with it

Big win for Chelsea yesterday. People were writing them off after just one game

chelsea played with 6 defenders, 2cdm, 2 attackers and managed to score 2 from 2. good job but wont always work.
