Tony Pulis defies convention by declaring his love for the Carabao Cup as a strong Baggies side progress to the third round, while a much-changed Watford team crash out despite another goal from Etienne Capoue.

Elsewhere, wholesale changes are the order of the evening as Swansea City finally start scoring, Jermain Defoe blanks in a Bournemouth victory and Leicester City, Crystal Palace and Brighton also win.

Here are the notes from Tuesday night’s action.

Baggies up for the cup

It’s hard to devalue a cup contest with so little perceived worth in the first place, but the usual cries of anguish were heard anyway when the likes of Watford took to the pitch having made six changes to their Premier League side.

Then again, the Hornets ended up losing 3-2 to a Bristol City team that made nine, so not all the blame can be laid at the door of those in the top flight.

But at least one top-flight manager is in the Carabao Cup to win it – Tony Pulis.

“We’ve taken the competition seriously. It gives us a chance to get to Wembley. I’ve been fortunate to take Stoke there and it would be lovely to do that with West Brom.”

Pulis made ‘just’ four changes to his side for the trip to Accrington Stanley and was rewarded with a 3-1 win in which Jay Rodriguez scored his first competitive goal for the Baggies. He also provided the assist for fellow forward Salomon Rondon’s strike, while Matt Phillips also emerged with goal and assist returns.

West Brom lost their appeal over Hal Robson-Kanu’s weekend dismissal at Burnley, meaning the Welsh international will now be out of commission until Gameweek 5, missing the visit of Stoke City and a trip to Brighton.

That merely serves to promote Rondon’s case for more time off the bench as Rodriguez has started as the lone striker in both Baggies’ league fixtures so far. Despite being shifted to the flank last night, the latter’s goal will have given some encouragement to his 2.1% Fantasy Premier League ownership.

But no FPL manager has ever grown fat on the produce of West Brom forwards under Pulis, and the manager’s public backing for the Carabao Cup is more likely to raise the risk of injury and even perhaps rotation at the other end of the pitch.

Ahmed Hegazi (19.2%) and Craig Dawson (6.0%) both started in Lancashire, with Allan Nyom and James McClean completing a makeshift back four.

Gareth McAuley and Jonny Evans – the latter linked with a move to Man City – remain sidelined, leaving Pulis with little scope to rest his well-owned starting centre-backs – aside from fielding fringe members of the squad in midweek cup fixtures, that is.

That, clearly, is not going to happen. Whether the extra shifts for the centre-halves come back to bite at a later date remains to be seen.

Capoue scores again

For many managers – although clearly not Pulis – an early League Cup exit is a case of losing the battle but winning the war.

So Watford boss Marco Silva might have talked of a 3-2 home loss to Bristol City as ‘a disappointing result’ and ‘a bad night’, but getting back to a Premier League campaign from which they’ve accrued four well-earned points already will be a major consolation.

And so will the goal scoring form of midfielder Etienne Capoue.

The Frenchman was the first major FPL bandwagon of last season, and his final tally of 131 points – from a starting price of just 4.5 – persuaded more than 5% of managers to take a punt on their man starting the new campaign in similarly explosive fashion.

Alas, he didn’t start it all until a ten-minute cameo in the second match at Bournemouth, but even that gave him just enough time to score the Hornets’ second goal of a 2-0 win.

Capoue did start against Bristol City, however. And he scored again. His lack of Premier League pitch-time has prompted a drop in both his ownership, currently at 5.6%, and his price, to 5.4.

Two goals in as many matches might spark a re-evaluation but he’s unlikely to gain too much traction while the Richarlison option retains Watford starts.

Priced at just 6.0 and subject to 81,000 transfers in so far ahead of Gameweek 3, the Brazilian played the full 90 minutes last night, but the closest he came to scoring was when a shot hit the post.

At the back, Jose Holebas’ avid collection of yellow cards – he amassed 15 last season – continued with a pair of them against the Robins which means he will sit out the Brighton fixture.

Unlike Holebas, fit-again Troy Deeney started and finished the cup tie to earn his first minutes of the campaign. Adrian Mariappa grabbed a late consolation goal for the Hornets.

Three Swans also a-scoring

The FPL appeal of Swansea City assets has thus far evolved entirely around their price.

Angel Rangel is currently in 17.6% of squads solely because of his 4.0 value, although he did get his first minutes of the season – a full 90 of them – in the 4-1 win at MK Dons.

At least midfielder Tom Carroll actually plays league matches; a fact that has persuaded 6.2% of managers to invest 4.5 in him.

He was also in action at Stadium MK and earned an assist, but it was others who caught the eye.

Leroy Fer netted twice, Tammy Abraham opened his Swansea account and Jordan Ayew was also on the scoresheet as Paul Clement’s men put two goalless league defeats behind them.

The Swans’ schedule now eases, with a trip to Spurs the one major test until Gameweek 10.

Budget striker options Abraham (5.5) and Ayew (5.0) have now started all three matches this season. Together with midfielder Fer, they’ll be hoping to bring their midweek form to Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace.

Elsewhere…

Jermain Defoe (7.9) made his first start for Bournemouth but failed to score in a 2-1 win at Birmingham. The 3.7%-owned striker has lost both price and managers on the back of a quiet start to the season.

Only three players – Adam Smith, Steve Cook and Ryan Fraser – kept their places from the Cherries side that lost to Watford on Saturday. Fraser and Marc Pugh got the goals at St Andrew’s.

James McArthur scored both goals as Crystal Palace registered their first win under Frank de Boer.

The Eagles beat Ipswich Town 2-1, with the teams making 18 changes between them.

The 12.1%-owned Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy allayed any doubts over an ankle injury picked up in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Brighton by making the bench for the trip to Sheffield United.

There were a mere 16 changes (eight apiece) in this match, with Harry Maguire, Wilfred Ndidi and Christian Fuchs the only players to keep their places from the weekend.

Maguire picked up a knock for a clattering first half challenge but played on and was only subbed late on with the Foxes ahead. Manager Craig Shakespeare declined his centre-back as “fine” post-match.

The Foxes won 4-1, with goals from Demarai Gray, Ahmed Musa and a double from Islam Slimani.

Brighton bounced back from that Leicester defeat with a 1-0 win over Barnet.

James Tilley scored the winner for the Seagulls. Manager Chris Hughton went full Monty and changed his entire team for the encounter which included a first start – and booking – for Anthony Knockaert, who was withdrawn immediately after half-time.

  2. Are early points hits for team value worth it?

Are early points hits for team value worth it?

There seems to be lots of conjecture about this, but as with anything in fantasy football any ounce of quantifiable rationale can help to make decisions not just based on despair that Harry Kane is being transferred out ahead of or fear of missing out on a hunch of a hegazi hatrick. This isn't so much about predicting future points, but quantifying the points value of team value losses or gains (ie in what circumstances is a 4 point hit worth it?) to throw into the mix alongside future points predictions.

So what is the value of 0.1m loss at this point in the game?

Using Ruth NZ's extremely helpful post on picking by value, we know that 0.5m extra over the course of the season should be buying the winner of fpl around 0.4x38 = 15.2 points. For us mere mortals, this is at the top end of what we will probably end up getting, but we'll work with that figure for now. So a 0.1 team value loss with 36 games still to play is worth a maximum of 2.88 points potential, but somewhere in that region. After 6 weeks, it's 2.56.

So if the decision is simply on the basis of avoiding a loss even though you think eg Daniels will score greater or amount to Cedric over the season/next few weeks it's not worth it. However the margins are fairly small, you only actually need to make a 1.12 points gain on the other player if you apply the value gained well to make it worth it. So the 'will they score 4 more points next week logic' is a bit flawed when value comes into play: and it seems that more often than not avoiding the price loss for a hit in gw2 seems a fairly reasonable call provided you actually think you'll get more points and it's not shipping out Kane ahead of a big potential points haul out of principle of team value.

What about catching 0.1m or 0.2m price rises?

The first thing to say is that there's little logic doing this if you're buying a player with worse points potential over the next few weeks (eg got good points last week but terrible fixtures coming up, hello Jamie, Jese) as the value is unlikely to be realised, it could go down so having to transfer out the next week for 0.1 gain is arguably an 8 point hit (to get in and then shift on) but only worth 2.8 points potential from the gain in value.

However, in thinking this through, maybe a few examples are helpful. Pogba 0.2m rise, best case scenario is that he become essential and you would have wanted to get him in the following week anyway, so in catching the 0.2m rise a week early, you've got an extra 5.6 potential points worth of value in your team. Assuming you're transferring out a player you wouldn't have wanted (and eg got rid of in wildcard), worst case you have to ship out at wc with 0.1 extra bankable team value worth in the region of 2.8 points. If the 2 options are 50/50 at this stage that's a calculated risk worth taking at this stage in the season even if you think he'll score exactly the same points as an alternative eg Silva. Come eg gw10 or post wildcard, that's not a risk worth it.

Alonso 0.1m rise. At this point to justify the switch, best case he becomes essential and you would have got him next week, so you only need him to get 1.2 points (4-2.8 potential points from 0.1 gain in team value) more than the alternative to make it worth it. Worst case you transfer him out at wildcard without cashing the increasing, you'd have needed him to score the full 4 points more over that time. A more risky proposition, so really looking at somewhere between anticipating 2 or 3 points more points over the next 2 or 3 gameweeks to make worthwhile.

What about shipping out players falling for players rising?

This is obviously a double win. Under an average of the pogba scenarios, pre wildcard (as free to shift out if not right) you gain an average of 4.2 potential points worth of value from him plus 2.8 from avoiding the loss of a price fall = an average of value worth a potential 7 additional points over the season. 4 point hit, no brainer.

With alonso, again pre wildcard, the average of the scenarios is 1.4 more potential points from value, plus the 2.8 from avoiding a loss = an average of value worth a potential 4.2 points over the season. So again seems like a sensible call even with similar expectations of how many points players will get going forward.

At what point in the season does it no longer become worth it?

So if our best bet and a no brainer for now is shifting out a player falling for someone who is likely to rise 0.2m and 50% chance of staying in the team for a hit, at what point does this become a harder decision. Well let's assume we've played our wildcard so risk of shifting out means there's a equal chance of having to shift out for a hit (especially if playing it aggressively like this) as for a free transfer, up until gw 13 the value argument alone would still justify making the switch by my calculations. After that point, you actually need the switch to be beneficial points wise.

    In conclusion

Obviously there's many other scenarios and factors at work, but I'm quite suprised how easy at this stage it is to justify shifting out players falling in value purely on the points that value would be worth. Similarly, where they are not just one hit wonders or chasing last week's points, there's solid quantifiable rationale for jumping on bandwagons even for hits pre wildcard. I would have definately changed some 'wait and see, patience is a fpl virtue' decisions over the last few days if I'd done this analysis earlier.

    In summary:
A faller to a riser in gw2 for a hit = rational decision on team value alone.
Hits for 0.2 risers who have a 50% chance of staying in the team in gw2 = rational decision on team value alone.

Hits just to avoid fallers = need c.1.5 point benefit over next few weeks to justify (not the traditional 4 points assumed)
But don't just jump on small risers who aren't possible medium term keepers

Should have got Pogba for de Bruyne shouldn't I?!

Nice post and reasonable thinking but I think this is where there is a danger of actually overthinking in fpl. A bit too deep for me. I don't take many hits in a season. I've learned over the past 10 years of playing that hits are generally not worth it so it would be a very rare occasion that I took a hit for value reasons

You see that's what I felt and worked by, and I know it's not for everyone, but in doing the sums I think the main point is that hits for value decisions are more justified than the received wisdom suggests. But you're right, I'm definitely an overthinker!

There is another factor which people don't stop to consider. Of course a higher team value is helpful and gives us more flexibility, but there are no guarantees that the best team over the course of a season, will actually even come in at 100m.In Leicester's winning season for example, possibly. Team value may end up being wasted.

Yeah I'd say that it would be very rare for the best possible team over the course of the season to come in at less than 100m. Possible though! But thinking about it there may not be much difference between 100 and, say 105 in a given season.

Ah interesting, cos yeah based on Ruth's figures, say the best team possible was 105m value getting 2500 points, with 100m you could get about 2350 - but it could actually be closer to 2450 say. Looking at the figures it doesn't seem so wildly off though if it bought you an extra 200+ player or 2.

This week i already did -8 hit. Jesus,Fraser and Salah went out and Pogba, Chicarito and Eriksen came in. Swing in price will be 0.7 just this week (pog and chica double raise, eriksen single raise and jesus and salah going down .1).
I fully expect that players i brought in make up for the hit ( and even bring more points) over next few GWs considering they have better fixtures and form then the players i droped(and all 3 of them seems to be rotation prone). It should also save my WC for another few weeks. Once again, great stuff mate

I years gone by, when the markets were both much more volatile and a low number of decent budget options available, it was crucial to play the markets in order to maximise the number of big hitters you could crowbar into your team.

This season, there are very few risers relative to previous years, plus some budget options seem to be emerging (although the volume of data is still far from conclusive). So I am not going to bother this year, unless it means I will be priced out of someone I really want.

            Excellent post.

A lot is dependent on whether cheap essentials emerge which lower the need for a high TV whereas expensive essentials raise the need. Depending how you use it the Free Hit chip also has an effect. If you are going to use it in a blank week then you will likely have all the TV you need irrespective of budget but if you are going to use it in GW37 or GW38 then you should favour a high TV strategy.

0.1 value does not yield a boost on its own. 0.2 is required for a 0.1 longterm boost in value.

I was wondering has anyone given thought to whether it is more worthwhile to take a 4 point hit when making 3 transfers (i.e. when you have 2 freebies) vs a 4 point hit when making 2 transfers. I always wonder if the former is more worthwhile.

            Example:
            - If you make 2 transfers for a 4 point hit then you could look at it that your 2 players in are worth -2 each before the GW starts.

            - If you make 3 transfers for a 4 point hit then you could look at it that your 3 players in are worth -1.33 each before the GW starts.

Is there a flaw to this logic or is it in fact less risky to take a hit (or more than 1 hit) when 2 of your transfers are free?

          B) Eriksen > Mane POOL COVER
          C) Kane > Kun CITY COVER

IMO Lukaku and one of Mkhitaryan/Pogba is essential so won't change that. Probably no need to double on Spurs though. Suggestions welcome!

Although the normal run-of-course is never to take a hit on a defender, I'm pondering it for a long-term move. Do either of these sound good?

Mentioned this last week but was probably missed..Could there be a way to split up stats per time period during games? I think Opta have this data..is there a way to integrate it into the members section? Would be very useful to analyse stats with a bit more relevance eg. City before the red card, Spurs v Newcastle before the red card, United v Swansea before 80 mins etc

Yes, we could investigate a timeline feature on the match dashboard. Just not sure how widely it would be used so it's never been near the top of the wishlist.

I think it'd be a cool addition. For a lot of reasons but particularly to see teams formation/substitution changes in the last 30 minutes or so if winning/losing. If there's a major formation change that brings about a win, maybe that'll be an indication of how that team will start the next gameweek. Maybe?? But good one, cheers.

Happy with my KDB + J.Rod -> Pogba + Hernandez moves (2 FT)...

Seriously considering Salah to Eriksek for a -4.

2 quite tough games coming up for Pool (Arsenal with Kosc back), possible rotation, and I really fancy Eriksen vs Burnley and then for his frankly insane run of games from GW 5...

Tough one really. I think my favourite team to play is Arsenal.

not for a hit imo. I see an open-ended game with goals. Would keep Salah this week and look to get Eriksen thereafter

Its likely to be a high scoring game between Liv vs Ars.

Yeah that's a tricky one. Both Pool games could be goal crazy, stalemates or anything in between

Realistically though, no one would be suprised with a 1-0 or 1-1 with Liv/Ars but a TOT mauling is expected - with Eriksen very likely to be involved.

See how Salah gets on tonight, but I reckon Eriksen will outscore Salah by more than 4 this week so it's a free hit in my eyes.

Hey guys, does anyone here know how Torres's Magic last man standing league works?

It's my first season playing it. I assume he just suspends the players who have not made the safety score? But how does he know if new players who join the league have passed all of the safety scores? Does he have to check each new player who joins?

Also I saw a top10k any season league which I have joined but again does the administer have to check each player who joins to see if they qualify?

Just interested in how this all works 🙂

            Cheers,

            Bmg17

He doesn't need to check everyone who joins originally, just those below a certain score each week.

ONly needs to manually check anyone joining late

I helped him out one year by removing all the teams each week - took forever!

In the league he started 13 games, came off the bench 10 times. He was injured and missed almost half of the season, also played out of position a couple of times. Overall it was a disappointing season for him and his highlight has to be winning goal against Chelsea in the FA Cup final.

Before that he was brilliant at Euro with Wales, if you remember.

If he finally stays fit all year I believe he is capable of repeating 2013/14 performances.

Hi, I've asked this question a couple of times over the past few days but haven't had a response. I'm on 2FTs so need to do something, but feeling a bit paralysed by choice.

            Foster (Elliot)
            Kola Davies Yoshida Cedric (4.0)
            Eriksen Ritchie Fabregas (Carroll Chalobah)
            Kane (c) Lukaku Jesus

            2FT £0m

            a) Jesus + Cedric + Ritchie > Alonso + Mkhitaryan + Mounie (-4) Feels like I'm chasing points and the three I'm getting rid of all have decent fixtures
            b) Cedric > Jones (Roll FT transfer and give Fabregas and Jesus another week)
            c) Something else

Possibly Cedric > Jones. Having 2 Soton def is a bit risky IMO, even though good fixtures. Sensible to have Man U cover.

Maybe even consider Jesus > Chicharito (Fixtures look great) and release the 3.5m to upgrade fabregas to Mane/Salah/Mhki/Pogba?
So early in the season to be sure though!!
Just my thoughts, hope it helps.
