It’s time to focus on the captaincy conundrum for the weekend’s ten fixtures.

As always, we check the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s (RMT) reckoning before offering up some differential captains in light of the data analysis.

The Captain Poll

Spurs, Manchester City and Manchester United dominate our Gameweek 3 Captain Poll, with each supplying three of the top nine players.

A home clash with Burnley elevates Harry Kane to the summit for the first time this season.

Sold by over 120,000 FPL managers this week, the Spurs frontman earns 36% of the votes cast despite failing to score in the first two fixtures.

Sean Dyche’s side kept just four clean sheets on their travels last season and conceded an attempt on goal every 4.8 minutes away from home – only relegated Sunderland boasted a worse record.

Despite supplying the assists for all three of his side’s goals this season, Christian Eriksen has convinced just 4% to consider his armband potential.

Meanwhile, a mere 2% are backing Dele Alli for the Wembley clash. Only Eden Hazard (12 to nine) scored more times in front of their own fans among FPL midfielders in 2016/17.

With 28% of the votes, Romelu Lukaku is regarded as Kane’s only real rival as Man United welcome Leicester City to Old Trafford.

Now up to a massive 57% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the Belgian bagged a brace on his home debut and followed that up with a strike away to Swansea City last Saturday.

Jose Mourinho’s side have scored four times in both fixtures so far and face a Foxes defence that have shipped at least two goals in five of their seven away matches under Craig Shakespeare.

This also brings Paul Pogba (3%) and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (2%) into consideration, with both outscoring Lukaku over United’s opening pair of matches.

Ranked joint-top of the FPL standings on the back of a goal and two assists, Pogba has been acquired by a massive 398,000+ managers since last weekend.

Meanwhile, the Armenian has racked up four assists and served up double figures in both appearances.

Man City roll up to Bournemouth on the back of a fine away record – they scored more goals on their travels (43) than any side last season.

Yet their slow start to the current campaign means that Sergio Aguero (3%), Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne (both 2%) are largely ignored.

Off the mark at Brighton in Gameweek 1, Aguero netted twice on five separate occasions away from home last term and scored more goals on the road (15) than any other forward.

Hauled off at the break on Monday as City regrouped following Kyle Walker’s dismissal, Jesus netted in all but one of his four away appearances last season.

Meanwhile, De Bruyne’s total of seven efforts on goal is ranked top for Pep Guardiola’s men – though all but one has been fired from range.

Elsewhere, a handful of in-form differentials could emerge as very canny picks.

West Ham’s Javier Hernandez bagged a brace away to Southampton and now pays visit to Newcastle United’s patched-up rearguard.

Chelsea’s two-goal Marcos Alonso entertains an Everton side that he scored against in a 5-0 win at the Bridge last year.

And Liverpool’s Sadio Mane scored in both clashes with visitors Arsenal in 2016/17 and has found the net in each of the opening two Gameweeks.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Captaining Kane. But Lukaku is a fantastic captain choice

Agreed, but if you're not captaining Kane at home to Burnley, you shouldn't be spending 12.5 on him. A large part of spending the extra on him over Eriksen/Alli is that he's a great captain option.

Liverpool have their champions league fixture just 3 days before the Burnley home fixture and 3 days before the Newcastle away fixture.. Considering their schedule
ARS mcy BUR lei new MUN tot..is anyone tempted to go with 0 pool players for now. Tough fixtures and a rotation threat for the easier games looks very likely. Considering the runs manutd and spurs have until then it maybe better to load up on their big hitters only instead

    1. Valar(Keith)
      • 16 Years

Love Mane and Firmino but every time I put them in I look at that schedule and get shivers..

Liverpool are a team that can score goals against ANY pl side. I think Mane is a must imo, especially as he is classed as a mid on the game. Even though they're playing Arsenal, I feel like he will bang in goals.

Liverpool will have to learn how to play multiple matches just like any other team.

I expect Firmino, Coutinho(?) and Mane to play MANY of these games. Unseen about Salah so far.

They have to play ARS mcy lei MANU and tot.. That's the problem. Those are games are too tough to rest anyone.. BUR looks prime for a rest. Crazy schedule I must say

On WC and I'm overthinking because I have the option to remove him lol. He is amazing.. I just don't see him matching an Eriksen or Pogba over the next 7. Salah getting rested put this doubt in my head

        1. Somalion
          • 16 Years
          8 years, 4 months ago

That's fair, I'd probably do the same! Way I see it, I'm sure some will disagree, but the difference between Mané and Salah is one offers a lot more. Salah has scored 2 goals in his 4 apps so far, not bad at all, but both real tap ins. Lots of his shots have been wide of mark, he often hasn't looked to set up team mates and at times his dribble on the ball is quite poor. Fast, but poor. This isn't me taking a shot at the guy, he's new to the team maybe he'll iron out those issues, but so far he's not established himself as indispensable. Mané, as far as I can see, has. Even against Hoffenheim the other night, Salah got on the scoresheet but it was Mané who bossed the game for Pool, he was fantastic.

Maybe rotation will be an issue, I could see Mané coming off early if Pool have soundly beat a team. But the guy is in great shape and has a lot of running in him, I've really not been too worried about his gametime (maybe wishful thinking here).

Yup. Mane seems unstoppable this year. With so many big hitters this year(sanchez and hazard on the way too) I think IL try and target fixture runs.. Now seems to be spurs /manutd/arsenal.. In 7weeks it'll be Chelsea /Liverpool etc. Else IL just go mad choosing between em

Whats general consensus here about Aurier. First choice over Trippier or just a back up?

Depends if Rose is totally out of the picture I guess.

Certainly think this Aurier business changes my mind over bringing Trippier in this week

Given that Man United have just paid £35m for a defender who is being kept out of the side by Phil Jones, it's hard to say who'll be first choice.

Should I play Ake or Suttner?
Playing Suttner would probably be the better choice but playing Ake would keep me interested in City v Bournemouth match. Is it worth playing Suttner since Watford will score anyway?

How many points is 0.1 value worth?

E.g. If you knew you were about to lose 0.2 in a transfer you were planning on making the following week, is it worth -4 to save the cash?
