We wrap up our take on Gameweek 3 with The Digest – our summary of the ten previous fixtures which picks out the top player, the major source of Fantasy talent and the big issue raised.

The Player

As the first player in Premier League history to produce a goal and assist in each of his first two home matches, Alvaro Morata could barely have asked for a more convincing start to life at Stamford Bridge.

Double-figure Fantasy Premier League hauls in both his home appearances for Chelsea have persuaded over 165,000 new owners to invest in the summer signing from Real Madrid as he wastes little time in settling into life in England’s top-flight.

At 24 years old, and after numerous campaigns as a squad player, Morata finally has the chance to establish himself as a regular under the guidance of Antonio Conte.

A glance back to 2016/17 shows that only 14 of his 26 league outings came in the Real Madrid first XI – yet he ended the season as their second-top scorer in La Liga.

It was a similar story for Juventus in both 2014/15 (11 starts, 18 sub appearances) and 2015/16 (16 starts, 18 sub appearances), with the Spaniard unable to cement a place on the teamsheet for the Old Lady.

Yet Morata’s output at Real last year bodes well for both the Blues and would-be Fantasy suitors – in spite of that limited pitch time, an average of 88.9 minutes per league goal was bettered only by Harry Kane (87.3) among FPL forwards.

His impact merely adds to a growing list of FPL frontmen jostling for our attention.

Of the 12 forwards to be initially priced at 8.5 or over in FPL this season, eight have started at least two matches. And only one of that eight – Harry Kane, who has produced more shots and efforts in the box than any player in the league – has failed to find the net.

Encouragingly for Conte, his big-money frontman has been quick to insist that he needs more time to settle.

That’s good news for the Blues, then, but the imminent return to action of Eden Hazard – at 10.5 to Morata’s 10.1 – also has to be factored in here.

Despite the heroics of Diego Costa last time out, the Belgian remained Fantasy royalty – he’s served up 190+ points in four of the last five seasons, with spot-kick duties a key weapon in his armoury.

But if Morata can maintain his momentum, there’s a chance he could even rival Hazard as our go-to Chelsea option as the campaign unfolds.

The Team

Three Gameweeks into the new season and we’re experiencing déjà vu with Liverpool.

They may have been devoid of want-away playmaker Philipp Coutinho so far but Jurgen Klopp’s side continue to offer Fantasy managers a wealth of prolific options.

A weekend demolition of Arsenal merely served a reminder of the Merseysiders’ unquenchable thirst for goals, with Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino all finding the net.

The former two sit inside the top four midfielders, while Firmino – reclassified as a striker – ranks joint-first in the overall standings.

We shouldn’t be too surprised by this. As evidenced last season, where six Liverpool midfielders returned at least 139 FPL points, relying on the concept of “coverage” when it comes to Klopp’s side can be a fruitless task.

So far, all three of their key men merit our attention. Mane has scored in every league match, Salah has registered more shots on target than any player, while Firmino now boasts spot-kicks and looks the bonus darling of the trio.

Their big-match mentality under Klopp also enhances Liverpool’s attackers as fire and forget options. In 2016/17, Liverpool won five and drew five of their 10 fixtures against top six sides – a total of 20 points accrued was more than any of their rivals and double that of both Manchester clubs, for example.

As highlighted by Salah’s benching at home to Palace, the Champions League schedule may throw us a curveball every now and again.

But as the 212,000 FPL managers who transferred out the Egyptian ahead of last week’s deadline can attest to, turning our back on Liverpool due to the occasional threat of rotation looks a very risky move.

There is also growing optimism surrounding Klopp’s defence.

Liverpool ended last season keeping five clean sheets from their final six matches.

They have now earned two shut-outs over their three Gameweek fixtures this season and have allowed just 14 shots in the box – second only to Manchester City.

We may still presume a vulnerability at set-pieces, but if Klopp can possibly close a deal for Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk, that could also be corrected.

At that point, we would have to consider the merits of defensive investment. That would possibly bring full-backs Andrew Robertson and Alberto Moreno into the equation. Both appear to be competing for the left-back berth and, if a dominant party emerges, they could offer strong value at 4.9 and 4.5 respectively.

The Talking Point

There’s no real right or wrong time to play an FPL Wildcard – mostly, the decision is relative to both the state of your 15-man squad and the fixtures ahead.

Yet as the transfers in and out escalate over the first international break of the season, the reset button is a temptation.

On the one hand, there’s a fear that three Gameweeks worth of data isn’t enough to base our alterations on. We’ve also yet to factor in the impact of the likes of Hazard, Coutinho and Alexis Sanchez – wherever he lands up – into our thinking.

Yet we’ve also borne witness to a number of scenarios that can help steer our selections and help navigate the imminent price drops brought about by the frantic FPL market.

Despite failing to find the net, Kane’s goal threat has not been diminished by Spurs’ move to Wembley. Neither has Dele Alli’s.

Klopp’s “heavy metal football” will ensure that Liverpool’s attackers will still dazzle, even if Coutinho departs.

Man United’s midfield will benefit from the pace of Romelu Lukaku up front, with Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan looking the value options. Indeed, the Belgian’s spot-kick miss against Leicester could now strengthen Pogba’s chances of snatching penalties.

At Man City, Sergio Aguero’s role as a regular is up in the air after a switch to one up front brought about his benching at Bournemouth. And Pep Guardiola’s 3-3-2-2 may not get the best out of Kevin De Bruyne.

In defence, Marcos Alonso has been quick to replicate last season’s heroics, while an injury-free Phil Jones, at just 5.1, could help save the pennies as the best route into the Red Devils’ rearguard.

Add in the recent addition of wing-back systems at Stoke, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Swansea and there’s arguably plenty to go on.

Currently, just over 119,000 Wildcards have been activated, that’s a far cry from the 310,000 that were used at this time last season, with this first international break the most popular time to play the chip in 2016/17. It remains to be seen if events on Thursday’s transfer deadline will urge more into committing to a rebuilding programme.

Any last second transfer moves make you consider a new/old FPL player? 🙂

Think Abraham at 5.5M will be nice if Llorente goes to Chelsea
Liverpool's defence could be worth looking at after they get van Dijk. They got 6/7 cleansheets I believe in their last league games.
Sanchez at City could be disgusting too

Tammy first name on my WC team sheet. Best value I can see in the game over the medium term. I want to put Robertson in. Can carry him for a little bit but the worry is he rotates with Moreno constantly

Three GWs is very little information to base something on but is Firmino not under threat of rotation in the league?

He is essential to Klopp's tactics.
    He has great stamina.
Liverpool have a decent CL draw so can afford to rest him there.
No real alternatives either. Solanke is too young, Sturridge has fitness issues.

But then Klopp demands a lot of energy, he'll never start someone who's not 100% fit.
He won't sub Firmino early either. He makes his changes very late in the game.

Morata should be reasonably nailed on(unless Chelsea sign Vardy or Llorente)

Do these 10-10.5m forwards compete directly with Firmino now?

He has always been the player who creates space for his teammates and isn't as selfish as you would want your FPL investment to be.
Last season I was slightly put off by this. But with pens I think he increases his chances of scoring 5 or 6 more goals this season.

Even in the Watford game he was lucky to be on pens. Otherwise it would be 5 points and not 12.

are we still talking about fermino in this season? because as the number 9 role he is a beast atm in my eyes a steal for 8.5
and i totally disagree that he gonna only have 5 goals or more then last season.....if klopp plays him up top for most of the time he gonna challenge for the golden boot this season .....but i always loved his kid so could be all foggy minded.. hahahahah 🙂

He's one of my favourite players in the world but I can't see him challenging for golden boot. That's not his role. He is selfless and will bring goals out of those around him. I reckon 20 would be his ceiling. Could be involved in 30+

Wonder how many will captain Kane this week?

Decided to keep him based on his ridiculous stats. Then, whilst looking for a captain option in what is a pretty thin week, I wondered why I was ignoring Kane given those ridiculous stats.

If we buy them as a reason for keeping him then should we buy them as a reason for captaining him too even with a toughish fixture?

We've already seen his rotation with Boney M. already, but I think Firm. is not as safe as Lion would purport.

Studge. could be risked in a game or two in Sept. over Firm. in my book.

Liverpool have qualified for Champions League and I know they will be busting guts to do well in it as priority. Rotation is real Mane / Salah / Firm.

agree.... i got 2 pool in the front and one at the back benched........... just think we are to easy shaken by rotation etc. what i did this year i got myself a decent bench in case of rotation so i keep great players even if hey don't play and get points of the bench...so far it worked out...last week for example... Kol not used Sub, had carroll and ayew on the bench but carroll first so 3 points for him hope to be able to do this over the season...with that in mind i dont have to freak out if rotation issues accuracy... make that any sense hahahahah 🙂

Good point if you can convince me of the fragility of one player over another in considering Salah / Firm / Mane. Of course it's a given regards Studge. so maybe your opinion stands up here.

I was bemused to see Studge come on again last game after limping out again previously. It leads me to Klopp's statement pre-season that he is in the best shape since he's taken charge of the Pool. Not Sure tbh.

Lol, I'd say if you're not going Alonso might as well go for 5.5m - 5m players because the gap between him and the 6m defs is quite a bit in terms of appeal but I think his attacking threat + cleanies makes him worth it, I like to think of him as a 7m mid who gets clean sheets

Looks good to me. I have the same with Bailly instead of Hegazi, so I totally get the "reassuringly expensive" backline thinking. Also contrary to Hot Fuzz, I think Alonso is going to outscore all other sub 7.0m players in the game (including strikers). Thats why I have him in anyway.

don't get me wrong last season i had him nearly over the whole season great player ...... this time around i think in sort of 12 gameweek blocks, first wildcard gameweek 12 etc.... for that he doesnt fit in there at all. i wouldn't buy any 7 mil mid or forward as playing players anyway so cant compare..... its just my way to play the game this season ...but love the looks of alonso and think he gonna be reclassified to midfielder next year around... good luck to everyone

      Nice balance - price wise.

Alonso is a very good pick esp as CHS look back to their near best.

      Cedric - has great fixtures.

Hegazi - will he continue to start? This is one of the problems with playing WC now.

If they all continue to start, it's a nice D although Jones and TAA are great value picks too.

Thanks, I'll take my chances with Hegazi, perhaps he'll price rise before any risk of rotation allowing me to get a 5m def in, would be the ideal situation, so hoping I can get Jones in, just need Kane to do his bit and drop. TAA is unfortunately not nailed, if he was would defo have him in my team

This Saints defensive love has gone too far on this site and watching their recent games has confirmed it for me. People are playing historical Saints rather than the now and future. (Lucky Trolls). Get off it !

If you can't afford Bail. I would swerve Jones and play the fixtures. Otamendi will survive Citeh C/L rotation I feel.

    Chicharito + Mkhi + Davies
    OR
    Kane + RLC + Naughton

Feels like a lot to give up for Kane but want him in for when his goals eventually start flowing... Thoughts?
(Also have Alonso, Bailly, Mane, Alli, Lukaku & Firmino, so he would make it a nice 7 big heavy hitters if he came in...)

        As it stands:
        Foster/Elliott
        Alonso/Bailly/Davies/Zanka/Mbemba
        Carroll/Mane/Alli/Mooy/Mkhi
        Firmino/Chicha/Lukaku

Thinking of putting in Kane + PLC + Naughton instead of Chicha + Mkhi + Davies. What do you reckon?

Its exactly my dilemma... But if you project him as a 450-500pts players (assuming standard captain pick once the goals start coming), can I really afford to be the guy stuck with the great but not "beast mode" Mkhi, Chicha and Davies combo?

No I meant go: Davies, Mkhi, Kane, would allow you to only have 1x4.5m def as you'd be ok playing the other 3 defs vs anyone

So I have the following and I'm wondering what you think about some possible moves:

    De Gea

    Yoshida / Hegazi / Cédric / Fosu-Mensah

    Mkhitaryan / Salah / Alli / Richarlison

    Kane / Lukaku

    1 FT £2m ITB

    (A) Kane -> Morata

    (B) Kane -> Firmino

    (C) Kane, Richarlison -> Morata, Mané (-4)

This is a real dilemma because (A) and (B) will leave me with either £4.4m or £5.9m ITB.

    (C) hedges against my Liverpool duo but relies on Morata doing well and all three options depend on Kane not scoring double digits in the next two GWs which I'd be OK not having him for.

On the one hand, 2 FT + £2m ITB could be very handy in GW5.

On the other hand, I'm not sure how much longer I can put up with Kane hitting the woodwork while Morata and Firmino quietly rack up serious points.

I think long term it will be justified. My criteria for forward has to be a top dog in their respective team (ie. lone forward). Only 1 I wish I could include is Abraham, but couldn't take any of the present 3 out.

I wouldn't get Willian on a WC. Can you downgrade Mooy/Forster and upgrade Willian to Eriksen. The way you've lined up your team it's hard to see where the cash has gone. Try lining up with most expensive to least expensive left to right.
