Gary Cahill’s finally completes his move to Chelsea. Fernando Torres takes up extra shooting training to help end his goal drought. Hatem Ben Arfa reiterates his frustration at a lack of game time, while Steve Kean is adamant Chris Samba is going nowehere:

Chelsea have this afternoon confirmed the transfer of Gary Cahill from Bolton for an undisclosed fee. Coming in at 5.2 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Cahill certainly offers a cheap route into Andre Villas-Boas’ back-four and looks likely to place a big question mark against the future game time of David Luiz in the heart of the Blues back-four. The Blues have hardly been kind for clean sheet returns though; last weekend’s 1-0 win over Sunderland was their first in seven games and only the second they have managed at the Bridge all season.

Chelsea coach Steve Holland has revealed Fernando Torres is taking extra training sessions in order to end his scoring drought. The Blues’ record signing has failed to find the net since gameweek 6 and has scored just twice this season. Torres picked up an assist in the 1-0 win over Sunderland, with Frank Lampard slotting home after the Spaniard’s effort had hit the bar and looked busy throughout. Holland went on to say:

His finishing is looking very good in training, the ball is flying in. I have personally spent some time with him on making sure [he’s in the right position]. Sometimes when you’re trying hard to score, you end up in areas where you’re less likely to score. It’s not a bad crime, it’s only because he’s so determined.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew assured reporters after yesterday’s game against QPR that the injury to star midfield player Yohan Cabaye is not as bad as first feared. Cabaye left the field mid-way through the first half after being on the receiving end of a challenge from Shaun Derry and was immediately sent to the club doctor. Initial check-ups, however, showed no serious damage, with Pardew saying:

He [Cabaye] felt it [the challenge] was probably a little bit over-exuberant, but the doc thinks he is going to be okay.

Hatem Ben Arfa has once again voiced his displeasure at not being included in Newcastle’s starting XI. Ben Arfa was expected to have earned himself a starting role after his wonder goal in the FA Cup against Blackburn last weekend but once again saw himself line-up on the bench, with only the injury to Cabaye affording him sixty-six minutes game time. The Frenchman admitted:

I am frustrated at not being able to play, but I won’t go and start an argument with the coach about it, because I know that I will only lose. I will respect his authority and keep my philosophy whether I play or not. For me football is a game based on lots of movements and passes. The coach likes the long, direct game. He often says, “cross it in the box” but I completely respect that philosophy. I am ready both physically and mentally. I will not start any arguments, my time will come and I just have to be patient.

Sunderland defender Matt Kilgallon will have a scan in the next few days to determine the extent of the ankle injury he picked up against Chelsea. Kilgallon has enjoyed a mini renaissance at the Stadium of Light, starting the club’s last three league games, but could now face a spell on the sidelines. With Wes Brown a doubt with a groin problem and Titus Bramble currently unavailable due to an Achilles injury, Michael Turner looks set to step into the first-team fold. Turner replaced Kilgallon at Stamford Bridge on Saturday and with home games against Swansea and Norwich up next, could be a decent cut-price option at just 4.2.

Steve Kean is adamant that Chris Samba is not for sale, despite reports linking the centre-half with a move away from Ewood Park. The Blackburn skipper missed the FA Cup defeat at Newcastle and last week’s home win over Fulham due to illness, but his manager is hopeful Samba will be available this weekend for the trip to Everton. Reports also suggest Rovers have rejected interest in Steven N’Zonzi from a host of Premier League clubs.

you have to feel bad for newcastle without tiote and ba just as you have to feel bad for man city without yaya toure, but personally i think the biggest loss is having to go without lynx africa for the next month. voodoo can do a job to fill in but i'm still uncomfortable with it being labelled 'the danny guthrie of deodorants.'

Good overall. I'd put Krul in there instead of Bogdan. Also upgrade Ferguson. Lots of rotation & injuries in the 2nd half of the season. You'll need good attacking subs. Stick with Caulker as the 5th def.

FPL flops you can't help but love.

Kolarov claimed the title last year in an absolute landslide of 59 minutes appearances, red cards and FA Cup screamers. My nominees so far this year are:

    1) Victor Moses. Own him for 12 weeks of 2s, sell him, he notches 2 assists, a goal and 3 baps in the next 3 GWs and I honestly could not have been happier for him. If Tarrabt had done that to me I would have shot him.

    2) Royston 'Ricky' Drenthe. 2,0,0,0,4,6,2,0,1,2 might not sound like a recipe for undying FPL love, but the rapping, the Playboy models, the nightclub in his basement, the fat arse - beautiful stuff.

    3) Niklas Bendtner. Nah, only kidding.

it's not much good now but drenthe missed 3 games with an injury then 2 with an illness, his starts read 16,4,2,4,6,2,2 with the majority of 2s coming away from home where you don't expect much anyway. even a player as good as rvp would struggle coming in and out of the side and lacking 90min fitness each time to compound the misery. anyone labelling drenthe a complete flop is also labelling vermaelen, jones, smalling, and more flops too.
moses however has no excuse. well apart from playing for wigan and only costing 5mil 😉

I some how cover up a 100 point lead since gw 5 over my half active rival by wasting tons of hours on transfers and football news and finally take a 5 pt lead by GW19..

Then 2 weeks in a row that half dead account gets 16 and 25 pts off the bench from raylor(after losing LB spot) and dyer as 2nd and 3rd sub and now ill be 30 pts behind by the end of this GW..

He has probably not logged on to FPL even once during last 3 weeks and I spend so many hours on it..

Things like these make me want to pull my hair out and just quit..

Anybody considering Graham and Moses rotation in a couple of weeks? I know Swansea and Wigan rotate well and would give a quite decent first sub most weeks.

Allows for a strong other top 6 in attacking positions and a quite decent defence for example:
    Lindy Vorm
    Kompany Enrique BAE Senderos Simpson
    Silva Dempsey Valencia Bale Moses
    RVP Aguero Graham

Trained towards the end of last week, most on here expected him to play but he was on the bench. Whether that's because he wasn't fully match fit or just not picked, don't think we know yet.

Personally, I'd downgrade Cahill and Raylor and 1 of Walters/Dempsey to someone like Dyer/Moses and have a bit more to spend up front in the Bent/Torres/Ade bracket.

If you want to stick with what you've got then go for Fletcher maybe and you might make enough to get Ba in when he comes back, or even Agbonlahor perhaps.

    Santon's PPI scores for his last 4 90 minute matches: 6, 15, 16 & 18
    Compared to Simpson for the same matches: 7, 11, 16 & 20
    Williamson's last 4: 16, 17, 10 & 15

I'll probably sell Simpson for one of the other two on my wildcard, for their somewhat greater attacking threat.

Just a question of which one. Worried that Newcastle may still buy a CB in the window. Whereas Santon can play on both sides.

Most people have been advising Williamson because he's "more nailed on" and has less competition. I went for Santon, partially because he's Italian. I would probably make the same choice if I could go back, Pardew has had nothing but praise for him, and there's always the possibility Pardew could bring in someone who could threaten Williamson at CB.

      Short answer; Santon.

We've got such a weird situation with CBs though. If we did sign Samba what is the order of preference? And they are all out and out CBs who can't cover LB or RB (actually Samba probably could).

Mac, Kaboul has done his fair share of shifts at both LB and RB, especially RB. Based on Gallas form this season, he doesn't look up to the very top level anymore, and the story will never change with King Leds.

Kaboul has been a minor revelation this season, really started to look assured on the ball as opposed to an accident waiting to happen, really using his pace and strength to good effect, and Daws is growing into a very reliable Def. So that pair to fight it out with Samba for CB spots.

We could do with better LB cover than Rose though.

Agree with what you said about Kaboul being a revelation - quietly been out most improved player. Dawson is a good player too but if we want to progress we are going to need to have some rotation especially next year if we do get champs league football and have loads more games to play.

It's close as it is, not many years three teams separated by 2 points by Mid-Jan. Game on, I'm just a bit worried about MU's recent squad strengthening, and savvy use of Zimmer-frames in up coming table-topping clashes. 🙂
