It is time to draw a line under Gameweek 6 by assessing the player, team and talking point in the latest edition of The Digest.

The Player

In just six Gameweeks, Alvaro Morata has been our featured Digest player on two occasions.

It’s rare for us to revisit a topic in this very article but the Spaniard – who earned the accolade as recently as Gameweek 3 – has somewhat forced our hand.

A three-goal demolition at Stoke City took him up to 48 points in Fantasy Premier League and has persuaded over 217,000 new owners to take the plunge ahead of a tricky home match with Manchester City.

Sitting above the likes of Romelu Lukaku (44 points) and Harry Kane (32), Morata’s outstanding start to life in the Premier League has strengthened the idea that a premium three-man frontline is the way to go this season.

Given that another pricey striker, Man City’s Sergio Aguero, sits atop the FPL standings, we face a real conundrum when assembling our attacks.

Yet Morata’s relatively kind 10.3 price tag – 1.4 cheaper than Aguero and Lukaku and 2.2 less than Kane – is clearly weighing in his favour.

Granted, there’s also the Eden Hazard factor to consider, with the winger yet to start for Chelsea this term.

The Belgian’s spot-kick duties could sway some when assessing the best route into the Blues attack for an excellent stretch of fixtures from Gameweek 8 onwards.

But as we witnessed with Diego Costa’s output last season, it’s not as if Hazard is the be all and end all of Chelsea coverage.

Assessed against Costa’s numbers from 2016/17, Morata is firing shots at a quicker rate. His average of 1.5 big chances – or gilt-edged scoring chances – is three times Costa’s 0.5, meaning he’s been more accurate and more clinical.

In a season where the “must-haves” change from one week to the next, Morata’s form – and upcoming fixtures once the City match has passed – look increasingly difficult to ignore.

The Team

There must be something in the water in north London.

After Harry Kane failed to break his Premier League scoring drought in the month of August, Arsenal’s form in September has also stuck to the script.

The Gunners, it transpires, have never taken more points than in September under Arsene Wenger – averaging 2.15 from a total of 73 top-flight fixtures.

After shipping eight goals in the first three Gameweeks, Arsenal embarked on a run that has harvested a trio of clean sheets and seven points, helping them clamber up the table.

That resolve has forced a reassessment of their defensive prospects.

While premium picks Sead Kolasinac and Hector Bellerin offer attacking potential in the wing-back berths, Nacho Monreal – at just 5.4 – has earned bonus in each of the last three Gameweeks from his new spot in the back-three.

Elsewhere, as we wait for Alexis Sanchez to rediscover the form – or appetite for playing – that took him to the top of the FPL rankings last season, there are cheaper options available in the Gunners attack.

Aaron Ramsey has now produced points in all three home outings ahead of Brighton’s weekend visit. If you’re shopping for a mid-price option in the centre of the park, only two midfielders priced at 7.0 or under have bettered the Welshman’s nine efforts in the box.

And four goals from spot-kick taker Alexandre Lacazette – all at the Emirates – suggest that if he can find form on the road, we could have another name to consider in the premium bracket up front.

What’s all the more encouraging for Wenger – and Arsenal’s Fantasy suitors – is that they prefer playing in October too. Because they have also averaged 2.15 points in the tenth calendar month.

And matches against Brighton, Watford, Everton and Swansea City during that stretch grants the Gunners another chance to maintain their fine autumn record.

The Talking Point

It says everything about the fickleness of Fantasy managers that Harry Kane was sold by 196,000+ FPL managers ahead of last week’s trip to West Ham.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s Morata was given the elbow by more than 148,000 for the trip to injury-hit Stoke.

The clamour to acquire Aguero for Man City’s home clash with Crystal Palace meant that, for many, those two were surplus to requirement.

Yet while the Argentine justified the massive 784,000 transfers in with an 11-point haul – his second successive double-figure tally – he was still eclipsed by Kane and Morata, who recorded 13 and 17 points respectively.

With so many prolific options at our disposal this season, those moves exemplify that fine line between chasing last week’s points and looking at what’s just around the corner.

Last week’s man of the moment, Aguero has now scored 31 points in two appearances. But with a trip to Chelsea up next, he’s the fifth most transferred-out forward in the Gameweek.

That’s regardless of the fact that he’s registered five goals and an assist in his last four visits to Stamford Bridge. And then hosts Stoke and Burnley in the subsequent two league fixtures.

As highlighted by this Hot Topic regarding the FPL “what-if” machine, showing a little more caution with our transfers and affording our chosen picks patience, rather than looking to the market to steer our selections, is perhaps the savvier path to tread.

wish the replacements around the price range weren't so dire, I feel he's a decent option for a team who lumps it in the box and don't really have any finishers(somehow he's always there for the tap ins)

      Delph.

Another positive was the performance of Fabian Delph, playing at left-back in place of the injured Benjamin Mendy. The Englishman did not look out of position from his usual central midfield spot, winning the ball back 13 times.

Guardiola said: "For me, Fabian was man of the match. The guy is so kind and helps the team, he is intelligent, is physical and never loses the ball. He controlled Marlos and did it very well."

He does - think they're all good picks. For me at the minute I'm thinking that from GW8 I will have Eriksen, Silva, Lukaku, Morata and Aguero as my big hitters. If I got Kane instead of Aguero then I'd be looking at Mkhi instead of Eriksen and not sure on that.

Yup, same plan. Actually going without any Man U for a month or so. I just think other strikers will match/outscore Lukaku. Mourinho parks the bus away against big teams looking 0-0, 0-1 games so unlikely he gets more than 1 goal / game whereas other in form strikers such as Morata, Kun, Vardy have easier fixtures.

Never been a fan of picking the backup goalie for guaranteed start. Just pick 2 first picks. U'll be sorted 99.9999% of the time.

Looks good. Not sure on going with Elliot only. Why not Fabianski and Naughton to Mbemba/3.9?

I want one Soton D as well. Have you looked Hoedt? Is he nailed? It seems if they keep clean sheets he's more likely to be on bonus points.

That's not a bad shout actually - would prefer to have 2 playing keepers and Mbemba looks like he should keep his start for a while?

I am tempted with Hoedt but I'm not 100% convinced on how the centre back battle is going to play out. I would imagine it's Hoedt and Van Dijk long term but don't really see any competition for Cedric and both Yoshida and Stephens have played well at CB.

Yea I've been planning my WC on after this week. First I was looking to get Fernandez but Fabianski seems better option. No idea how long Mbemba keeps his spot but being 5th D doesnt matter all that much. If I need .1 I'll take Hunemeier.

Not sure I want to risk it either. And I'll be having Soton D only for GW8-11 so nailedness more important than couple bonus points.

    Repost for fresh opinion

I'm really tempted by the free hit chip this week

I have a team full of city and Chelsea players but no Liverpool and davies is my only spurs (no kane), added to that is possibility of kun rest.

city, chelsea fixtures look good so I'm happy with my assets after this GW, and may WC over next couple of GWs with fixture change but feel that I could make a leap on other players by having a team full of arsenal, spurs, utd and Liverpool players for one week only

depending on any injuries/price changes over next couple of days I'm thinking of starting gw7 with this team

    foster (WAT)
trippier (hud), jones (PAL), fonte (SWA), Moneral (BRI)
Ramsey (BRI), mkhi (PAL), Coutinho (new)
Lukaku (PAL), Kane (hud), Lacazette (BRI)

I had planned to use the free hit on a blank GW but who's to say what teams we would have playing in that? I think I might gamble on these strong players playing strong fixtures than having a team full of playing budget players later in the year. if I can make an extra 20 points over my original team I think that would be a successful use of the chip.

    thoughts?

Difficult. The free hit team is much better for this week, but if we have 2 DGW free hit would be very useful then too.
I don't think your team is bad enough to warrant free hit tbh

I follow your logic and also used it this week, I sold Lukaku for Aguero last week and don't want to reverse it and waste a transfer/lose value on Aguero (as I prefer Aguero in the next 6) but the potential damage from Lukaku this week would be devastating so I've brought him back, taken Alonso and Aguero out, taken Salah out (who has the annoying habit of being rested around European weeks) doubled up on Spurs fullbacks, added Kolasinac, added Lacazette while chucking in Coutinho (as a possible rankbuster at 5% ownership) and Ritchie for his set pieces against a team who struggle defensively with them.

At this stage of the season when ranks are close, a big week helps establishes where you will fight it out, I'm gunning for that big week.

Ideally it would be nice for the blank weeks but we've never had this chip for that before so will have to suck it up and do as I've always done, others may not want to, they don't have to.

If I can get a big score this week, avoid being killed by Lukaku and rise around 380k like last week then I'll be very happy with how it worked for me and won't be that bothered if no one thinks it's a good idea or not.

Not my cup of tea. Awesome if it works though. I think I'll go just Silva from City unless I go Kaneless which I doubt will happen. And I want Morata more than Hazard so no room for Kun.

I don’t know I can’t seem to fit in Silva over Eriksen & Salah. I think both of them will outscore him long term. The hokey cokey might just work better.

Yup, both valid options 🙂 At the moment thinking of going without Salah for 2 weeks, save FT* after WC and planning to do Silva, Walker -> Salah, xxx after GW9. I think it's possible to do that if I go 4-3-3 with Walker with Silva.

                * hoping

Dont like Walker's price long term but I don't see a problem doing that for 2 weeks. If there's a risk he gets rested after break then obviously I upgrade somewhere else and just get Otamendi or something.

Is it best to have one defender who doesn't start and a premium defender like alonso
    Or

So basically who will get more points, femina and suttner or alonso alone?

On the one hand, you only get one captain per week, on the other, having the three most explosive forwards in your team protects yourself even when you can't captain an individual but others successfully have.

I have Triple K, Kun Kane Kaku.

I hugely suffered last week from having Lukaku, Jesus and Firmino. Wildcarding this week as a result - with so many of the strikers doing so well you can't afford to have 2 slots failing. Looking at Lukaku, Aguero and Morata on my wildcard currently.

      2. Ser Davos
        • 10 Years

Thinking aloud, I've noticed that mids can struggle to get bonus even when they've scored. These players aren't being captain neither.

However if many people have a Kun/Kane/Morata as captain and they explode as we've seen and we're not an owner. It's red arrows all the way.

        1. Pooodle
          • 16 Years

Yeah I don't see many people captaining anyone other than strikers for a while. If you have 3 heavy hitters up front you should be relatively well hedged for captaincy.

  22. Athletic Nasherbo
    • 8 Years

There's been a lot of 'three big hitters are the way to go' meh not sure on that. Maybe this is coming from someone who hasn't experienced a gameweek where their strikers haven't performed whilst the other big hitters have.

Three up front limits your team either in defence or midfield. I feel as if you rely far too much on your strikers then the actual team you have. It also makes adjusting budgets way more difficult so flexibility is hampered. Yes you can say 'just downgrade a big hitter' but then what is the point in going three up front on a Wildcard for example
    In the first place.

Midfield and defensive assets are also chipping in and although they aren't getting hatricks there has been big hauls from high owned and expected defenders such as Alonso, Azpilicueta, Davies etc etc.

It seems to me that two big hitters not only ensures you have the desired strikers but also a much more flexible, and well balanced team that can outscore your 4.5m defender or your two 5.0m midfielders in your team that you're forced to accommodate.

I think all of the 'big hitters' Morata, Aguero, Kane, Lukaku and Lacazette will get respectable points throughout the season so aslong you have two you're sorted. If a few blanks for that striker an easy free transfer can be made to get a more inform big hitter at the specific time.

Nice one hopefully you enjoyed the book 🙂

Yeh I like this and think it can match a 3 big hitter team.

      Davies Jones Azpi Cresswell
      Coutinho Mkhi Silva
      Morata Kane Vardy

      1. Athletic Nasherbo
        • 8 Years
        8 years, 2 months ago

        Very much so.

I also like the idea of a 4th defender than a 3rd big hitter. An 11.5m striker and a 5.0 m playing compared with a 6.5m and a 10.m mid or below. Think I'll go with the latter.

    3. Hotdogs for Tea
      • 10 Years
      8 years, 2 months ago

The top 3 big hitter forwards are typically between 5-10 points average ahead of the top 3 big hitter mids.

(That's a lot of captain points.)

The top 3 mids are just a few points more than the top 3 defenders ... and there lies the answer to the 'weakened rest of team'.

Might be a matter of protecting rather than increasing value if you're ditching players who are falling in price too. Something like a 0.5m swing sounds about right taking into account falls and rises.

Depends .. I have 8 players on +0.1 or +0.3 ... i.e. If I wildcard me team I would instantly lose 0.8M but hold those players for another week and I could increase SV by 0.8M

    9. Hotdogs for Tea
      • 10 Years
      8 years, 2 months ago

Very little - last and this season saw few rises during the IB. The criteria for rises obviously changes, the mid section of the GW is flat and players get bored or do not transfer due to potential injuries until the last day of the GW.

A lot though depends on the results this week and whether they trigger the initial purchase frenzy.

Single digit rises mainly, which means you either keep players you don't want because you have a few .1s, or sell them before the end of the WC to get in the players you actually want.

Pros and cons to doing Alonso to Jones this week for an almost guaranteed clean sheet? Shame I missed the price rise but Man U defense are cleaning up in my ML. Would probably need to get rid of Alonso anyway to cover changes made in wildcard next week. I just never like to trade a defender for a defender without a free transfer. Already went Mkhi to Silva so this would cost me -4.

Wanted City player and was able to catch Silva's price rise. I had a disastrous gameweek and part of it was probably psychological. I probably should have waited, but oh well! I have Lukaku so my thinking was 1 attacking player from each United and City was better than 2 United and 0 City.
