Bottom of the league entering December, the light appeared to be dying for Steve Kean and his beleaguered Blackburn side, but a series of determined displays in recent weeks have demonstrated that neither the players nor the manager have any intention of going gently into the night…

Attack appears to be the only form of defence available to a side with no clean sheets in the league all season, and with the Ewood Park faithful sometimes resembling a lynch mob it seems a kill-or-be-killed mentality on the pitch may be the only way to save the team from the drop and the manager from the gallows.

The loan signing of striker Anthony Modeste from Bordeaux is Steve Kean’s first significant foray into the transfer market this month, and seems indicative of the attacking mindset that is slowly propelling the club’s climb up the table. With Yakubu the only consistent goal scorer in a somewhat agricultural front line, Kean appeared relieved to have acquired an option with more cultivated qualities, commenting:

If you look at his attributes as a player, then he has something that we don’t have, he likes to play on the shoulder, he likes to run in behind. He can stretch the game and technically he is good.

THE STATISTICS

A product of the Nice youth system, Modeste made his full professional debut for the French Ligue 1 outfit back in 2007 and returned a modest 10 goals in 63 appearances over two seasons at the Stade Du Ray. Loaned out to Ligue 2 side Angers in the summer of 2009, Modeste relished regular starts and re-ignited his faltering prospects with an impressive haul of 21 goals in 37 appearances.

A 3.5m Euro move to Bordeaux the following season seemed to herald a rebirth for the young striker in the top-tier of French football, but a frustrating second season saw Modeste reduced to a peripheral role. As a result, Blackburn’s scouts endured a wasted trip earlier this month, as the forward was nothing more than an unused sub in Bordeaux’s clash with Valenciennes on the 14th January. Over a season and a half at the Stade Chaban-Delmas, though, Modeste has notched 15 goals in 63 appearances. He’s also represented the France U21 side on 15 occasions, scoring 6 times, but has yet to make the step up to full international level.

THE PROSPECTS

Modeste’s goal scoring record for Bordeaux is perhaps more impressive than it might initially appear, given his regular position on the substitutes’ bench. His arrival will give Kean more options in terms of formation- the Blackburn boss prefers a lone striker system and has started with a front two just twice this season. Aside from Yakubu, the forwards have failed miserably, with David Goodwillie and Jason Roberts netting 2 goals in twenty-five appearances between them.

Clearly, Bordeaux still feel the young striker has a promising future, having refused to countenance a clause in the loan contract that would allow Blackburn to seal a permanent deal at the end of the season. Watched closely by Arsenal following his fruitful spell at Angers, Modeste plainly has his admirers amongst European football’s elite, and with two disappointing spells at French Ligue 1 clubs already blotting his copybook, he will be anxious to prove himself at what could be a make-or-break loan spell in the Premier League.

With a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) valuation of 5.0, Modeste will primarily be competing with Danny Graham, Steve Morison and Leon Best for investment in a budget striker bracket that has so far failed to deliver the kind of output enjoyed by owners of Andy Carroll and Peter Odemwingie last season.

Blackburn’s fixtures are a mixed bag in the short term with trips to Arsenal and Manchester City sandwiched between some kinder home ties against Newcastle, QPR and Aston Villa. This spell should give Fantasy managers ample opportunity to assess Modeste’s potential in time for an enticing run of games for Blackburn between Gameweeks 27 and 31, and with goals the only likely path to salvation for Steve Kean’s side, Modeste should get every chance to make his mark in what could be a long and bloody battle against relegation.

Ok, I know most of you will say a) but I'm very tempted with b) as a 1 week punt before I wildcard. Votes please!

    a) Nani -> Valencia (On fire, decent fixture, but is it a case of chasing the last few weeks' points?)
    b) Nani -> Larsson (On all set pieces, playing NOR at home. He's due a haul and SUN are playing very well under MON).

    Mignolet
    BAE, JEvans, Caulker
    Nani, Bale, Dempsey, Sessegnon
    RVP, Rooney, Adebayor

    Ruddy, Reo-Coker, Simpson, Wilkinson

If you leave it too long you'll look back with regret - better to regret something you did do than that which you did not. Nani is just out of form, and now injured ... whereas Valencia is completely on fire ... get the lad in there ASAP.

I like Val better, of your choices, but results will be sketchy considering his fixtures. Could be 2, could be 15, I reckon.

      A. No one is due a haul sir and that kinda thinking will only lead to major disappointment in this game. If you have access to his stats you can check to see hows hes been playing lately. What does his key pass stat look like? shots on goal/target etc. These are much better indicators of future point potential that just saying someone is due. Its late so hope this doesn't come across in a bad way. Just trying to help.

To WC now or not to WC now?

    my current team

    Vorm/krul
    Kompany/Enrique/BAE/Evans/Raylor
    Bale/Sess/Nani/Walters/Silva
    RVP/Best/Ade

Players I want out (I= immediately N=next week):
Nani(N),Walters(I) ,Best(I),Ade(N),Enrique(maybe to free cash, don't really trust pool defense anymore)
+Raylor, if he's not starting XI player.

    Players I wan't in:
Demps, Aguero, defence with good fixtures/form, maybe lindegaar for Vorm plus cheap striker.

    Any comments appreciated!

I would pull the trigger on the WC Ludo. There is enough dead money sitting in those you want to transfer out and Adebayor and nani have been horrible last few weeks (from Fantasy perspective at least). I would leave your keepers - they rotate well and Lindy is still a gamble, as well as United having extremely tough fixtures coming up. Perhaps consider Evans as your Man U coverage and then look at getting in Valencia and Dempsey for a fully-sick midfield!

You can hold off for a week imo. Your current midfield is strong and I would just bench Walters and play Best. In fact you may even want to play a 4-4-2 for the next game week as your whole defense has good fixtures

Can someone more knowledgable than i / Man U fan please explain the forward set-up at the moment? It looked like Rooney was running high in the midefield more than as a forward againast Arsenal with welbeck as the true striker. Was this because they lost Jones or is that how he's been playing. Honestly, he didn't look like threatening goal at all?!!

Yeah Rooney drops in behind the striker now with the wingers lending more support to the main striker. Rooney will still get forward and into the box a lot but won't be as much of a priority as say Welbeck

He's been playing really deep for a while now, i think it's to support the midfield and keep more possesion. Before we were a bit more explosive with more youth and speed in the midfield so he had free reign to get on the end of crosses etc. but the service isn't what it used to be and also there's the most important factor which is that he is SHIT! 🙂 Na, i don't really mean that however his touch is still a long way from his best but you know him one goal in a big game and he'll be banging in Hattricks for fun.

Hmm ... fairly constant formation with fluid movement ... I risk sounding stupid, but I'd say they set up in a 4-2-3-1

      Def
      Carrick/other
      Val Rooney Nani
      Welbz

Or, you could say it's a 4-4-2 with Rooney in the hole behind whomever (Welbz/Javier). largely a by-product of Cleverly out and Scholes (Scholes!) not able to pull full duty, so he's acts as playmaker. He'll float wide and push up, but he's not playing a 'true striker' at all.

take your time - just ensure you get the player you have no doubt you want in first to beat the price rise - for me i knew i wanted sessengnon and waited and waited and then nearly missed him by the rises. One more point a wildcard doesnt have to mean 15 player changes - i only did five and so far so good.

Hey Guys, getting frustrated with Nani and VDV and not sure what to do with them. My team is
    Vorm (Al Habsi)
    Enrique, Cahill, Kelly, Stanton, Caulker
    Silva, Gerrard, Dempsey, Nani, VDV
    Sturridge, Zamora, Bellamy.
    1.1 mil in the bank
I know its heavy in the midfield, i think the easy option would be to straight swap to VDV and Nani to Bale and Valencia so i can upgrade one of my forwards.
    Advice? Cheers in advance

Due to poor planning with my WC last week, getting Dempsey without a hit equals selling Silva or Bale. Have been thinking of selling Silva for him then getting Silva back in GW26 or so plus I have Aguero. Silly idea? Another idea is selling Sturridge for Zamora. Thoughts?

Despite Dempsey's massive score last week, I still think Silva and Bale are better propositions and wouldn't want to have to sell either of them to get him in.

    Morning lads!

Getting restless with 4 red arrows now.

    Given
    Enrique Walker Evans
    Nani Bale Demp McClean
    RVP Studge Kun
Subs – Vorm Moses Simpson Shotton
0 FT 2.2 Bank WC available

Anyone reckon I should WC in GW23 or take a hit with Nani unfit? Cheers.

Hard to say, reckon its fine for this week like I said but Id get rid Given, Walker, Enrique and Jevans next as they all have cacky fixtrures.

Tbh I prefer Valencia over Sess cause I think United can always score bigger than Sunderland and you're already playing Mclean 🙂

Hmm fair point. But Sess for the long run imo. Not convinced about Valencia's returns esp if he plays RB again. It's only for a week mostly - Sess should dominate vs Norwich. Hopefully so will McClean.

defence looks okay, I guess. So, stick with 4 pt hit? Cheers bud 🙂

I think I'd WC....but then again I HATE hits. Obviously waiting with the Wildcard is nice if you can, but I think taking a hit with two Wildcards in your pocket is just ridiculous.

Yeah Sess and McClean could also be golden against Norwich 🙂

Depends, if you plan to stick with your current defence on the wc, then wc now to sort Nani and avoid the 4pt hit. If you wanna overhaul the whole defense than wc next week and 4pt hit this week. Just my 2 cents of course 🙂

ILA, this is the only thing making me feel ok about not having Sess: it would basically mean not having Valencia. I think he will usually outscore sess, and will rarely play RB

And even if he does, he has like a goal and three assists from there.

Newman, pretty sure Im alone in this but Im not jumping on the Sesswagon. Plenty of players around him capable of scoring the points and reckon their purple patch wouldnt last long.

Still prefer Valencia especially he's now more important than ever with Nani and Young missing for United.

Tough choice. I guess its a decision between a 3-5-2 or a 3-4-3. That being said I do rate having 5 midfielders at the moment and B Arfa can really spark some life into Newcastle's attack so I would go for him. Have you considered who has the better fixtures in the coming weeks? That could sway your decision

      Krul and Senderos
Newcastle have a far better defence than Wolves - who cant keep the ball for more than 3 passes so are always under pressure
The other is tight but Norwich are a good attacking force and being at home i expect theyll score.WBA are not scoring, relied on Odemwingie last year so with him out of form and Brunt crocked I fancy a Fulham cleanie (hope so cos I have send too)
      Thats my analysis anyway

Fair enough. For me: Wolves are real strugglers but they put up a hell of a fight against favourites, eg. Arsenal, Chelsea, even City towards the end when they put them under real pressure. Liverpool have an awful attack, something like a goal a game. Sunderland: I've got great confidence in the MON effect and the accompanying clean sheets - which have multiplied since he arrived. Against a great passing team like Swansea they conceded something like only two shots. Fulham, on the other hand, I can't trust...

Senegal lost their first match in ACON. Apparently upset by Zambia. If they do not qualify for the knock-out round. Their last game would be Jan 29th! Ba could be back for Feb 1st (probably a stretch) but Feb 4 Match vs Villa in GW24 looks likely. Therefore only 1 more GW left until the "THE RETURN OF BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"

Frankly that team is pretty solid as it stands with 3m left. May well not want to spend much of it, but use it as a reserve for flexibility - that way you can upgrade without taking hits. I will be considering doing so...

I agree.....Will do Shotton > Evans and Sess > Valencia eventually. When united fixtures get better. Then again, what long term plan ever plays out in this damn game!!!

Hmmm, if Balo gets a 4 game ban this could be perfect for my GW24-27 1st wildcard period. Is Silva, Dzeko and Aguero too much? Can get this team if not...

    Sorenson, Linegaard
    Huth, Simpson, Senderos, Caulker, Shotton/Williamson
    Silva, Bale, Walters, Dempsey, Sigurdsson
    RVP, Aguero, Dzeko

    Bank 0.2m

See above conversation with Isaki. Aguero > BA. Looks like Ba might be back as soon as Feb 4th.

The savings would free up 3M for you to get Kompany or Richards.
