Bottom of the league entering December, the light appeared to be dying for Steve Kean and his beleaguered Blackburn side, but a series of determined displays in recent weeks have demonstrated that neither the players nor the manager have any intention of going gently into the night…

Attack appears to be the only form of defence available to a side with no clean sheets in the league all season, and with the Ewood Park faithful sometimes resembling a lynch mob it seems a kill-or-be-killed mentality on the pitch may be the only way to save the team from the drop and the manager from the gallows.

The loan signing of striker Anthony Modeste from Bordeaux is Steve Kean’s first significant foray into the transfer market this month, and seems indicative of the attacking mindset that is slowly propelling the club’s climb up the table. With Yakubu the only consistent goal scorer in a somewhat agricultural front line, Kean appeared relieved to have acquired an option with more cultivated qualities, commenting:

If you look at his attributes as a player, then he has something that we don’t have, he likes to play on the shoulder, he likes to run in behind. He can stretch the game and technically he is good.

THE STATISTICS

A product of the Nice youth system, Modeste made his full professional debut for the French Ligue 1 outfit back in 2007 and returned a modest 10 goals in 63 appearances over two seasons at the Stade Du Ray. Loaned out to Ligue 2 side Angers in the summer of 2009, Modeste relished regular starts and re-ignited his faltering prospects with an impressive haul of 21 goals in 37 appearances.

A 3.5m Euro move to Bordeaux the following season seemed to herald a rebirth for the young striker in the top-tier of French football, but a frustrating second season saw Modeste reduced to a peripheral role. As a result, Blackburn’s scouts endured a wasted trip earlier this month, as the forward was nothing more than an unused sub in Bordeaux’s clash with Valenciennes on the 14th January. Over a season and a half at the Stade Chaban-Delmas, though, Modeste has notched 15 goals in 63 appearances. He’s also represented the France U21 side on 15 occasions, scoring 6 times, but has yet to make the step up to full international level.

THE PROSPECTS

Modeste’s goal scoring record for Bordeaux is perhaps more impressive than it might initially appear, given his regular position on the substitutes’ bench. His arrival will give Kean more options in terms of formation- the Blackburn boss prefers a lone striker system and has started with a front two just twice this season. Aside from Yakubu, the forwards have failed miserably, with David Goodwillie and Jason Roberts netting 2 goals in twenty-five appearances between them.

Clearly, Bordeaux still feel the young striker has a promising future, having refused to countenance a clause in the loan contract that would allow Blackburn to seal a permanent deal at the end of the season. Watched closely by Arsenal following his fruitful spell at Angers, Modeste plainly has his admirers amongst European football’s elite, and with two disappointing spells at French Ligue 1 clubs already blotting his copybook, he will be anxious to prove himself at what could be a make-or-break loan spell in the Premier League.

With a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) valuation of 5.0, Modeste will primarily be competing with Danny Graham, Steve Morison and Leon Best for investment in a budget striker bracket that has so far failed to deliver the kind of output enjoyed by owners of Andy Carroll and Peter Odemwingie last season.

Blackburn’s fixtures are a mixed bag in the short term with trips to Arsenal and Manchester City sandwiched between some kinder home ties against Newcastle, QPR and Aston Villa. This spell should give Fantasy managers ample opportunity to assess Modeste’s potential in time for an enticing run of games for Blackburn between Gameweeks 27 and 31, and with goals the only likely path to salvation for Steve Kean’s side, Modeste should get every chance to make his mark in what could be a long and bloody battle against relegation.

did you watch Ful/New? Senderos was lucky not to personally give up two goals. the 2nd half took the spotlight off how poor he was. And im worried about Raylor getting a start at LB with barfa doing well.

Have you ever seen raylor play left back? He can't run, can't tackle, and has no positional sense. Not an ideal combination for a full back. I'm pretty sure he isn't any threat to santon. He is a championship standard right midfielder, which makes him better than obertan, but not fit to lace barfa's boots. Pardew loves him though. I think we will go with barfa up top with best and raylor on the right for the next few. Then barfa on the wing (no raylor) when tiote comes back. Please note, these are just my thoughts. I have been wrong on Pardew's thinking more than once this season.

i agree with your logic. I just think pardew may find ways to get raylor in, and though santon is the better choice for the LB spot by far, may occasionally see the bench. after letting 5 in, pardew may see an excuse against rovers to shake up something in the back. maybe more my fear as a santon owner than it is logic, but i still worry. Dont need him this week anyway, but hate to have to move out a cheapie, always seems like a low-impact waste of a transfer.

I would say that Raylor is now more of the threat to simpson than santon. He is right footed after all. But i don't see him getting back in the defence unless there is an injury. OOP or nothing i reckon.

    A. Aguero, Zamora, Sessagon

    or

    B. Dzeko, Ade, Valencia

I already have Dempsey, got Ade at 8.4 and am playing my WC.

Ade could be good to keep for Wigan... i've brought him in as a 1 week punt for that...

A looks slightly better... mainly cause i dont like Dzeko...

but all of the others are decent choices... perhaps a mix... Zamora, Sess & Valencia..?

Ya I think no matter what I'm keeping Ade for the Wigan game, and then will either be bringing in Aguero or Dzeko. My midfield is Silva, Bale, Dempsey, Allen so I only have room for one of Sess or Valencia, might take a punt on Ox for Allen but other than that I don't see myself changing those 3 in midfield.

I'd try fit in Silva, though.

Dzecko's stats are good but Aguero will be on pens now.

As a 3 GW punt Dzecko could be the better option as you can use the cash elsewhere but I plan to have Aguero for the rest of the season given Rooney's poor form.

Downgrade Shawcross to maybe Shotton if you want Stoke defensive cover and upgrade Ferguson it's important to have as many players playing as possible a couple of suspensions or injuries here and there and your struggling if you have to go with a non playing player best going with a keeper as they have less chance of rotation and injury

I currently have Nani as my only ManU coverage. Am considering whether to transfer him out for Silva or Mata. Or even downgrade to someone to like Walters and then upgrade Helgusson next week.

    Current team is
    Stockdale (Vorm)
    BAE, Enrique,Richards (Shotton, Williamson)
    Bale, Dempsey, Seee, Moses, Nani
    RVP, Helgusson, Kun

    Any thoughts appreciated!

Have to be highly unlucky having said that I do tend to make my transfers early anyway, yes there is slight risk involved but it's nice when you get to your 2nd wildcard with a team value of 111.5 lol depends if you feel your bench is good enough to cover any unforeseen injuries as silly as it sounds my team is probably too strong my dilemma is who to bench week in week out and Unfortunatly I seem to be getting it wrong lately, had Bale as 1st sub this week

    Please comment on my musing...

I'm on my WC and plotting my team. I need to make up a 120+ point gap on top spot in my league. Now I think that the general consensus is to have 3 Man City players for the long term. My current thinking is that regardless of my mini league I need to make up point, and therefore there needs to be a differential take on my pick.

To that end, it seems sensible to go for a defence heavy Man City pick, such as Hart, Kompany, Lescott, or Kompany, Lescott, Silva. Does the reasoning seem sound to you? Or perhaps you think a more balanced approach of say Kompany, Silva, Aguero is the best tactic. I'd really like to hear what you think. Thanks in advance.

Yep. If someone is on or over 100% to a rise or fall they'll usually rise/drop in price. There can be some odd ones that don't, but that's how it works.

    3rd striker is sturridge

say early team sheets for chelsea and utd come out, sturridge starts, welbeck starts. the spot, like for most owners is reserved for ba. so its not like im married to sturridge. however he is my only chelsea attacker. however, i have no utd attack. just played wc last week, so i feel discipline should be in order and save the transfer. though if i had my choice right now for this week, id like to play welbeck. a brace doesnt seem out of the question.

    What would you do?

i dropped Sturridge for Welbeck... i'd rather gamble on a United attacker than a Chelsea attacker right now (particularly a Chelsea attacker returning from an injury)...

currently have Krul/Sorensen and their rotational honeymoon period has come to an end.

Lindegaard has pretty perfect rotation with Krul, but I still think he'll miss the odd game. But still, £4.4M (or whatever he is these days) for a United 'keeper is outrageous value, even if he does miss the odd game.
