With yesterday’s digest wrapping up gameweek 22, we turn our attentions to next midweek and beyond. While we wait for the upcoming FA Cup action to pass, we once again bring the fixture list under review, assessing the weak and the strong from the forthcoming schedule…

The Strong…

Man City

Roberto Mancini’s side were fortunate to pick up a win in their Sunday lunch time date with Spurs, but there’s denying their potential to go on harvesting points in the coming weeks. Of the title challengers, or indeed, of all the top six sides, it’s City that are crossing the calmest waters in the month ahead.

It begins with a visit to shot-shy Everton and peaks with a run of three home games in four that has them face Fulham, Blackburn and Bolton. While Europa League action dissects that group of games, it seems unlikely that Mancini will rotate his big guns, making it almost essential that Fantasy managers approach February with two, if not three of his players in their squad.

QPR

Mark Hughes earned his first three points at home to Wigan on Saturday and will now be looking to replicate the kind of revival in fortunes that Martin O’Neill has orchestrated up at the Stadium of Light. Certainly Fantasy managers need to stay on alert – the situation at Loftus Road demands monitoring, not least because Rangers face a run of opponents that will give them every chance of pulling themselves out of the relegation dogfight. Wolves, Fulham and Everton are all due to visit Shepherds Bush in the next five Gameweeks, whilst visits to Villa and Blackburn also offer potential.

As we mentioned in last week’s Frisking, we perhaps need to wait until the revolving door comes to a halt and all of Hughes’ new recruits are in place before we can assess what’s on offer. Joey Barton, Heidar Helguson, Akos Buzsaky and Anton Ferdinand are already available for those looking to dip their toes now.

Fulham

Clint Dempsey’s ship may not have sailed. In fact, Martin Jol may even have several other vessels in the harbour worthy of attention. Saturday’s hat-trick from the American will have been missed by some but, on the eve of a second price rise in the Gameweek, we’re here again to tell you that his prospects remain strong for a good while yet.

A Craven Cottage clash with West Brom is the first of four very favourable home games in the next seven Gameweeks, which will surely produce several wins and some handsome attacking returns. Dempsey will likely lead the charge, but Bobby Zamora’s 17-point haul from the win over Newcastle shouldn’t be ignored, while the back four and midfield – with bargains and differentials throughout – could also come out of the next seven Gameweeks with profit.

Wigan

Bear with. No really, stick with us. The Latics may have lost four of the last five, scoring just four goals and conceding 15 but, in terms of forthcoming fixtures, their prospects look fairly decent.

Like Fulham, Wigan enjoy four home games in the next seven, with Everton, Villa, Swansea and West Brom paying visit in a spell which threatens to make or break their season. It seems unlikely that Roberto Martinez will lift his side from the basement to survival, but if they are to escape, the next seven Gameweeks look to be their opportunity to defy the odds.

Fantasy options remain typically limited, although Victor Moses may be retained by some as a budget midfield option, while wantaway striker Hugo Rodallega presents an intriguing alternative up top.

Also Consider…

West Brom – the win at the Britannia was typical of a Baggies side who seem unable to achieve any consistency this season. With decent fixtures in the next four, however, Fantasy managers may be tempted by their budget assests, with James Morrison the man in form.

Newcastle – the Magpies stuttered badly at Craven Cottage but have a run of four games which should help them recover and make it through to the return of Cheik Tiote and Demba Ba.

Stoke – a bitterly disappointing showing against West Brom will surely be addressed by Tony Pulis and with Sunderland, Swansea and Norwich at the Britannia in the next five, the prospects within the Potters’ squad still look strong.

The Weak

Everton

Those holding to Leighton Baines in the slim hope that David Moyes can find a cutting edge to convert his supply from left-back will surely now be planning an exit. Baines and his Toffees team-mates face City at Goodison next, with Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs and Arsenal all hovering in the next seven Gameweeks.

Clean sheets look unlikely, goals remain hard to come by. By the end of March, we could well see Everton firmly embroiled in a relegation dogfight, unless a goal threat can be found or much-needed new blood introduced.

Liverpool

The defeat at the Reebok was the latest setback, with Kenny Dalglish’s side now mustering just a single win in their last six league matches. The unlikely loss sets them up for a potentially perilous trip to Wolves. They will visit Molineux with a back four that has kept just one clean sheet in five and an attack that seems reliant on Craig Bellamy to score the goals – something that Dalglish appears to be resistant to when it comes to naming his starting lineup.

Three home games in five appear to offer hope, but Spurs, Everton and Arsenal are the visitors. With a trip to United amongst that batch, it’s hard to see defensive returns, whilst the Liverpool attack will need to spark if they are to earn results against that calibre of opposition.

Tottenham

An unfortunate defeat at the Etihad leaves the title dream hanging by a thread –within the next month, it could be severed altogether.

A White Hart Lane meet with Wigan should restore confidence but, following that, Harry Redknapp will take his side to Liverpool and Arsenal, with Newcastle and United due in North London. An evil run of four matches that will surely decide if Spurs are to rival the Manchester clubs to the end, or scrap for fourth with neighbours Arsenal.

In Fantasy terms, we’re likely to see limited returns from a back four that has been profitable of late. In attack, Gareth Bale will likely remain untouchable as an asset, although confidence and investment in those around him will surely decline.

Also be wary of…

Man United – wins against Bolton and Arsenal have resumed normal service but tests lie ahead. Chelsea, Liverpool and Spurs all line up in the next five, which could hand City the chance to open the gap at the top. Wayne Rooney and Nani have disappointed of late, while Antonio Valencia and Danny Welbeck have stepped up – that pairing might be pushed to maintain their recent output, however.

Norwich – Steve Morison remains a popular target up front, but investors should be wary of a fixture list that has him face resurgent Sunderland and the tough Swansea and United defences in the next four. The home clash with Bolton may need to be profitable if Morison is to reward his new Fantasy owners.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Why no love for Walters? Between GW 24 to 28, he has 3 home games in 4 (against SWA, NOR and SUN). He's also on pk's and is playing oop. Surely a good differential to Sess given his fixtures, or Valencia who generally only gets assists (and so fewer bonus points)?

Thanks for the replies. I'm planning to stick with him, so hoping he doesn't get taken off pens+he bags a couple of goals from open play. Could come back to bite me, but I have Silva and Demps too, and I'm not overly convinced by Sess or Valencia given their fixtures till GW 28.

Is it worth bothering posting a RMWCT. I know what people will say about certain players being not so 'nailed on' etc. I just think I will trust my own instinct on these things and run with it. So long as you have a rotation plan and get players with the right fixtures its all you really need. I think its better to go with the gut on these things

I agree with you. At some point you are the one who must make decisions and if you trust your gut feeling, then go with it. I have yet to throw out a potential WC team for rating but really all I would want are opinions on certain players from people here who usually give solid advice and dont throw out misinformation.

I guess people just feel the need to comunicate and RMWCT seems to be the easiest way to do it right now. Don't worry, after gw24 it'll be back to just RMT. Also people wanna be told they are doing well/have a good team etc. Just human nature and thats kinda the point of this site also so as much as i would like every post to provide me with deep insight into petential players I accept thats never gonna be the case.

Most RMWCTs are mundane affairs, but I think the main benefit is people pointing out the negative, not the positive. Usually there's some player that you chose because he fit your budget, and someone who's been there or has more information points out he doesn't always start, or he plays better home or away, or he's on or off pens. It's not that you couldn't find out yourself, it's that you don't have enough time to research every possible player, but someone out there might know about your player...

Just looking ahead to GW's 25-27. Especially with respect to midfield. With exception of MCI (Silva) FUL (Dempsey) and CHE (Mata) i am trying to figure out who to bring in. The rest of the "Big Gun" mid's have tough fixtures (you know it is getting thin when we referr to Dempsey as a Big Gun". Anyone thinking that far? If so, who do you have your eye on?

I was looking at this. I've actually thought as I currently have Mata (Silva Bale but keeping through) that would rotate my Transfers to Suit games.

GW 23: Mata to VDV (Will he play with Ade coming back see a big score V Wigan)
GW 24: VDV to Walcott (I know but it's only 2 weeks)
      GW 25: No Change
      GW 26: Back to Mata

      Thoughts on this?

With Balo out, thinking of entering GW23 with :
    RVP Aguero Dzeko

Then Ba, Cisse return from ACN sometime around the end of Balo's suspension:
    RVP Aguero Ba/Cisse

If Aguero misfires, he becomes Rooney, Bent or Suarez...

    Plan?

Yes. Have RVP, Aguero, Sturridge(yet to WC and may shift Sturridge) Have one eye on Ba, another on other cheapie forwards and could always bring in Roon for Aguero if I go cheap on third. It's a rough plan but that's enough right now I think. Too many cheapies to choose from but not enough 8-9M players with any real form

I would wait on Cisse.....give him a chance to adapt. Assuming you have Silva, I would go
Richards/Kompany, Silva, Dzeko. CS are probable for MCI

      Im going RVP, Sturridge, Dzeko

      Sturridge > BA
and Mata to Midfield for Sess with the savings from Aguero in GW 25. I really think that Mancini is pissed with the Big Bad Italian. He has said before that he is uncontrolable. Going forward i think that Dzeko will get the 60+ mins and Balo will get the 15-20 min cameo's

Yeah I have Silva and I'd want to get City defensive coverage too (esp Richards), that's the main doubt in my mind about having Aguero and Dzeko. It's just that there aren't that many explosive striker options right now.

I've been there with Sturridge and it was good for weeks but has gone very sour recently - Chelsea are a dysfunctional team and Sturridge isn't a happy bunny playing on the flank.

I just feel RVP Sturridge Dzeko will look a little light, and there aren't many heavy hitting mids right now.

Any chance that I can outscore my opponent? We are playing in a monthly league, so this gameweek is the 'money' week.

    I am 4 points behind.

    My team
    Mignolet NOR (H)
Simpson BLA (A), Kelly WBA (H) , Jose Enrique WOL (A)
Bale WIG (H) Sessegnon NOR (H) Silva EVE (A) McClean NOR (H)
Van Persie BOL (A) Rooney STO (H) Aguero EVE (A)

Subs Sorenson Dyer Caulker ShawX $0.2 in the bank

    His team (probably):
    Vorm CHE (H)
BAE WIG (H) Ricards EVE (A) Raylor BLA (A)
Bale WIG (H) Sessegnon NOR (H) Gerrald WOL (A) Dempsey WBA (H)
Van Persie BOL (A) Rooney STO (H) Fletcher LIV (H)

Subs Hennesey Enrique Hanley Ferguson $0.0 in the bank

Both teams have WC-ed and have 1 FT, taking a hit is a NO.

    Questions:

    1) Should I use my FT for ShawX--> Jevans STO (H) hoping for a Man U clean sheet? This will either alter the formation to 4-3-3 (dropping Mclean) or keep 3-4-3 (dropping one of the defender)
    2) Or do you have other ideas? such as upgrading midfield with limited cash?
    3) I have a feeling that he might captain either Rooney (last gameweek) or RVP or Dempsey. Which player should I make as a captain?

Sorry for the long post. Any views are welcomed. Thanks

Every week the objective is the same - you're just trying to select the team that will score the most points - don't let his personal choices stop you!

It's hard to touch that midfield and attack so best bet is probably improving a defender. I actually doubt if Newcastle will get a clean sheet... perhaps you could switch Shawcross to a defender who could get a CS and attacking points this week... BAE is a great bet for an assist.

Alternatively bite the bullet on Rooney and shift him for pretty much any striker you desire.

You have the edge over him in strikers and in goal, it's pretty even in midfield, and you're worse in defence... fix that and you could well win.

I wouldn't change your team too much, you having Aguero and him having Gerrard should see you through.

The main problem with ShawX–>Jevans is that the move doesn't benefit you long-term, ShawX has good fixtures after Man Utd. Perhaps Hennesey>Lindegaard?

I see... yeah I'd probably lose Huth, even though people are well into his attacking potential - so many 'attacking defenders' have been rather disappointing this year, and he doesn't look like not being one right now. Expensive too. Huth > Clichy? Seems to be starting now, attacking fullback, at a much better team.

Fair enough I know there's some stats behind Huth, like attempts on goal, just don't know if it'll continue or translate into goals. Pulis is a very defensive manager and the goals they've been conceding recently won't make him more attacking... they also score few anyway :/

            On my list so far:
            Baines (more his team's fault)
            Ade

I couldn't resist to hold him after DGW. I captained him and he did nothing in the course of two good home games.. Actually, in my mind, he was out after the first game with zero shot (if my memory is not wrong).

He does not seem to be on form. Watching the last few games I think VDV has dropped back. I do not like it.

I think Ade will play....defoe did not look particularly good even though he score.

BTW.....wish Defoe's legs were as long as Ade's. If they were, Spurs would have beat MCI. ;-(

So with 2 FT next week, thinking it's time to get off the sinking SS Sturridge and play two up front (RVP and Aguero) with a cheap third striker on the bench.

    OUT: Ben Arfa, Sturridge
    IN: Valencia, Helguson

    Yay or nay?

That's the problem with HBA though: he ticks the form and fixtures boxes, but not the 'nailed on' box.

Every time he's played well he's wound up on the bench the following game.

It's a pain to do it though, as Ba still needs to come in for him imo. Ideally Studge would show some form until gw 26. If he doesn't, I may even swap to Ba early and save the extra transfer. Not ideal, but while Ba's flagged he'll continue to drop slowly.

His best chance to shine is probably this Saturday FA Cup with QPR as EPL games away to Swansea and home against United are surely tough..

His transferred out rate doesn't much bad. I think he might drop in price just once before deadline of Gw24.

To be fair, Everton are not the worst defensively... granted they cannot keep a clean sheet to save their lives, but on deeper analysis, they have only conceded more than 2 goals once this year and have actually conceded the fewest chances of all teams in EPL, and are level with Chelsea on chances allowed per game...

Add this to the fact that they step up their game against big teams, I think this 3-4 game run might just be the making of Baines...

I know, I know... I might just be dreaming... but it's definitely possible 🙂

well the easy way would be to get the armband right more often. Truly is the achilles' heel of my management. Otherwise just gotta take a few more risks and do things others are not doing as much, tripling up on defense, ignoring the bandwagons, maybe try 4 or even 5 in the back more often. The closer we get to the end of the season, the more Im willing to go off-track.

Right now though Im doing ok, shaving the ranking down little by little. Once you get around 10k though, you hit a wall, and its much harder to make a dent.

Tell me about it. I've twice had a top 5k finish in the last 3 years. I shat myself when I had a top 1k ranking midway last year and the wheels came off in spectacular fashion. Captaining BZ instead of Capt America in last years double was the final nail in the coffin. If I got that right I'm sure I would have had a top 1k.

I'm lacking that "something" to propel me into a top 1k. I need balls. Like tosey.

it'll happen for you. Youve been too close and too consistent. No shame in those final rankings at all. More respectable than someone who finished top 1k once and only 100k the other 3 years.

Yeah, I had him...problem is I then kept him waayyyy to long. One thing owning a player in a hot streak, but more difficult to cut him lose when injured or losing form. Last year I had the same problem with Drogba.

I'm already towards possible replacements for Sess(!) and Walters. You?

Good. I might go ManU less until gw 28 and then do Walters-->Valencia.

Sezz-->Moses/Barton(on 8 yellows though...) to free up cash for the Walters-->Val trade.

I'm also selling Enrigue for Richards/BK

probably wouldnt even use evans next week, but its looking more and more like he will be a safe regular starter for SAF, and his price will be rising steadily. helps me get valencia though. so any 4.5 defender is up for nomination, Taiwo would make me look hip. Waiting to see his price tag.

I think you answered your own question. Liverpool will have been rocketed by Dalg, and will be disciplined at the back. Fletch will be marked out of the game I would think.

HBA can score or assist against anyone at the moment. I think I need to get him in soon, before the lads come back from ACN and ruin his game time potential.
