A brace from David Silva confirms the red-hot form of the midfielder as Manchester City make short work of struggling Swansea City.

In the six Gameweeks leading up to last night’s 4-0 victory, Silva scored twice and provided two assists.

Priced at 8.5, only Raheem Sterling was a cheaper route into a quartet of Man City stars dominating the top echelons of the midfield charts in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

And yet over that time frame, the Spaniard was in the process of losing almost half his ownership – down from a Gameweek 9 peak of just under 1.5 million to 794,000 when he opened the scoring in the Manchester derby last weekend.

Two goals and maximum bonus at the Liberty Stadium produced a season-high 16 points for Silva, taking him over 100 points for the campaign and propelling him to third in the midfielder standings, behind just Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne.

Only the Belgian has played more minutes than Silva’s 1,426 among City’s midfielders. Meanwhile, the mix of season-long consistency and a recent explosion of form in which he’s scored four of his five goals for the campaign has finally persuaded FPL managers to reverse the sales trend.

More than 91,000 bought him going into Gameweek 17 and 94,000+ have already acted after it, making him the most popular purchase ahead of the weekend deadline.

Both Silva and, to a lesser extent, De Bruyne had been the fall guys in the rush to secure the services of either Sterling or Leroy Sane, with the German almost doubling his ownership as the Spaniard’s came close to being halved.

Silva now costs just 8.2, and City’s schedule (TOT BOU new cry WAT) and his blistering form suggest price, points and ownership are going only way for the foreseeable future – up.

Sane Misses Out

The City quartet are all among the top seven most productive and most popular midfielders in the game.

De Bruyne’s strike against Swansea made it three goals and two assists over the last six Gameweeks, while Sterling provided a brace of assists and has three of those, plus two goals, over the same period.

The Belgian has started every league match this season, Silva all but one and Sterling the last seven, suggesting the England international is closing in on the “untouchable” status of the more senior pair.

The same cannot be said for Sane, who has featured in just two of the last four Gameweeks and has provided only one assist since Gameweek 11.

He watched from the bench as his midfield team-mates ran riot last night and coach Pep Guardiola seems to be managing the young German’s minutes since he picked up a fourth booking of the season in Gameweek 13.

Guardiola might well be protecting his starlet ahead of Saturday evening’s meeting with Spurs, but the 17.7% of managers still with Sane will again be considering an exit plan.

He has lost over half a million managers in the past four Gameweeks and, with another 55,000 sales following Wednesday’s blank, is the second most sold player heading into Gameweek 18.

Returns both front and back

Sergio Aguero scored late at the Liberty to appease a 16.9% ownership that has endured a six-Gameweek run of just four starts and two goals.

The Argentine has started 11 matches this season and scored in nine of them, but Guardiola’s consistent rotation of him and Gabriel Jesus up front continues to keep us guessing.

Aguero remains a clinical striker – his 7.1 points per match (PPM) easily leads the field among forwards, with Spurs’ Harry Kane a distant second on 6.0.

But Aguero’s restricted pitch-time is a serious issue for a striker who costs 11.6.

Only Kane is more expensive among the forwards, and there are a number of alternatives – including Jesus (10.3) – within ten points of Aguero, but who cost considerably less.

Aguero has played 951 minutes this campaign, Jesus 874, suggesting that their job share will continue. That surely rules Aguero out as a reliable captain option, making it very difficult to justify faith in the striker.

At least there are no such worries over his compatriot Nicolas Otamendi.

The centre-half moved up to second in the defenders’ standings as City kept a clean sheet for the first time since Gameweek 12.

The Argentine’s 22.2% ownership had been insulated from that defensive fragility thanks to their man’s back-to-back goals prior to last night, and injuries to key defensive partners continue to make Otamendi an almost guaranteed starter.

That was not the case for Kyle Walker at the Liberty Stadium.

The 14.1% who own him had to stomach the England international failing to start in the league for the first time since a Gameweek 3 suspension.

His night on the bench should mean he plays a significant part in the rest of the festive schedule, but a six-point loss is a big one for an asset, at 6.7, so expensive.

Abraham’s stock sinks further

Swansea City frontman Tammy Abraham’s stint as a valid third striker option looks to have faded to nothing.

The 5.8-priced forward has just one assist from the last seven matches and he’s started only once in five Gameweeks as Wilfried Bony continues as Paul Clement’s preferred option up front.

The Swansea coach did bring Abraham on at half-time last night as he switched to a two up front, but the England international has lost close to half of his ownership in the past five Gameweeks and now resides in just 9.9% of FPL squads.

Since his last league goal, way back in Gameweek 8, any number of strikers have surpassed his meagre output – and for less money – with Leicester City’s Shinki Okazaki (5.4) and Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin (5.3) currently in the top five for transfers-in among forwards ahead of Gameweek 18.

He really impressed against Chelsea and does bomb forward. Agree he’s not likely to get many goals/assists but still more likely to deliver attacking returns than Ogbonna

I did it for Coutinho, 23 down so far. However I was doing a bench transfer until that news broke, Suttner>Kenny, and needed him this week as only got 10 out. So I’m 29 down over the two weeks! First really bad move of the season.

Missing out on the trio of Aguero/Sterling/Silva points has been very painful for me. Had all three before wildcarding GW13 and from that week til now missed out on 88 points. There replacements have been Morata/Sane/Pogba who have scored me 31 so a net loss of 57 since wildcarding on just three players. Gutted.

Smooth: This hit paid off well - Ramsey (0) + Daniels (2) > Silva (16) + Ogbonna (7). Richarlison and Zaha also returned.

Rough: Coutinho (C), but the big captains didn't show up, so it's not too bad. Kiko's horrible cameo. The injured Mee missing out on another Burnley cleanie. Kolasinac missing his, being rested. Gone from 39k to 48k. Not the worst drop, but one nonetheless.

Rough - Silva to Sterling 3 Gameweeks ago is looking like a huge blunder. Going to aim at bringing him back in for a double up. Azpi clean sheet lost pointlessly late on, Ward injury, Kane captain.

        Smooth:
        - Brought in Kenny for Dunk and he was a nice substitute for Mee.
        - Elliot not playing and Foster coming in with 10pts off the bench.
        - Lucky CS from Christensen

        Rough
        - Kane captain
        - Watching Silva score two after getting rid of him two GW's ago

        Rough rough
        - Went out of the FPL cup in the first round 55-65 against a team with an overall rank of 5.2M. The manager also hadn't done any transfers since GW12, but still managed to have his best GW of the season this week. Crazy.

Rough: Managed to lose my first round cup match by NINETEEN clear points to a ghost team which had Pogba captain and Morata vice captain. The git had David Silva. Why do I invest any time at all in this game?

This happenned because Harry F**king Kane is a useless troll. Obviously he was my captain, thats now 8 captaincy fails in 10 gameweeks. Mariappa clean sheet lost in the last minute, Mee didn't turn up, Morata out injured too. Pep dropping Sane was a killer as all his midfield teamates everyone else owned scored at least 9 points each. Even Salah didn't do anything this time.

Bench didn't contribute much, just 4 points from Duffy, Wimmer and RLC.

Smooth: Christensen's ghost clean sheet. My transfers in were actually really beneficial: Elliott and Ramsey out- Adrian and Richarlison in contributing 14 points. Unfortunately I now still have 3 flagged players, so the weekend doesn't look much more promising!

270k to 450k drop. Hurting badly.

Rough: After hovering in the top 5k last few months, lost my first round cup match to someone who played their free hit! Thats 3 years running i’v been rolled in the first round.

Smooth: Cup games won’t be a distraction going forward. Pope keeps on keeping on. Kenny, Christensen and Richarlison helped for a just ok 46 gameweek points.

ROUGH: Up against AZ in the cup and was pretty smug with a similar team setup. Upon deadline it came down to Me = Kola (whm) and Ward (STO) vs AZ = Ota (swa) and Gross (tot) and i was still feeling confident. Then Ward gets injured... followed by Kola benched. Result was a 4 piont win to AZ.

Putting the cup aside, i had Salah, Cout, Hazard, Kiko and Kane (c)... dropped from 40k to 80k.

Then the cherry on top of the horrible cake that was my gameweek was a loss in the FPL cup to a dead team!!!

        Semi smooth for me-

Took a hit to finally rid myself of the disappointment that is Ben Foster. Have been coveting De Gea for ages so decided to go for him. Figured Charlie Daniels next fixtures were not going to be too prosperous so brought in Kevin Long of Burnley fully expecting for him to be bench fodder. Lo and behold Morata doesn't show up Long comes on for 8 points and De Gea brings home the bacon with 11 points. Goodbye Foster! Don't ever come back!

Silva out (scores 3 in 2 games)

In game Niasse (who got his ban) and Coutinho (who has 3 points so far

Also captained Lane or the 5th time against easy oppo with no returns.

Rough - my dead team cup rival seemingly left his team alone for 10 weeks in preparation for this week. His team reads like the score sheet; Willian, Silva, KdB, Rooney, Lukaku(C). Even assists from Mata and Bertrand. West Brom double up at the back.
        He got 92 points!!
My team reads like the injuries/absences; Mee, Kiko, Richy, Morata, Sane, Niasse.

Smooth - cheeky Christensen CS, brought in Kenny, kept Silva while his stock plummeted. My record for captaincy choices this season is so poor that Salah(C) seems like a success

SMOOTH: Brought in Otamendi (6) and Alexander-Arnold (7) for Naughton (0) and Daniels (2). Also, some very unexpected points for Foster (10).

        A true tale of woe.

Pre all injuries I subbed Elliot to Lössl after misreading his next fixture... As a result I left Foster on the bench (-10).

Mee injured still missing out on clean sheet.
        Morata injured
        Last minute Chelsea conceded goal
        (C) Hazard - 3 goals but no attacking points

32 points and lost 400,000 places back to where I was 6 weeks ago =(

        The smooth

Rough: I have both Gomez and Alexander-Arnold (for many weeks now). I 'knew' Alexander-Arnold would play this gw. But (with exception of gw 1) Klopp never played them in the same game this season. So I left Gomez in my team and Alexander-Arnold was second on the bench but my first defender. First I was pissed that Klopp brought in Gomez for the last 10 minutes. But I had Goss and Lacazette also who weren't playing, so no big problem. Unfortunaly Goss had to play the last 12 minutes and Lacazette the last 8. So in 15 minutes the situation changed from 4 non-playing players (I have Morata also) but with the points of Alexander-Arnold to 3 players with 1 point and Alexander-Arnold staying on my bench.

awful week, had Ward injured and lost out on cs and possibly bonus, kola rested when arsenal got cs but not when they conceded last week (and i had then Ward second on bench now i had femenia), kane captain, rashford hits the crossbar, Sane rested in a game where City scored four, femenia points lost and injured. Lots of injuries popping up in defense, every god pick riuned by injuries.
smooth, almost nothing, Rooneys 8pointer was nice.

took a hit now and got de gea and i know this will ruin their luck, which is good for Liverpool. too much problems to deal with so Kane must stay, reluctantly. But that could turn out good in the end, i hope. City are, when they lose posession, vulnerable at the back and Burnley soon not to have any defenders at and Kane usually does well in christmas times

Was sick of Kane, wanted hazard, and then got worried about Silva injury.
Did Kane, David Silva and Pogba -> Morata, Hazard and Ramsey for a -4 hit...
Stupid rather than rough? Work it out to be about 24 points worse off than if I had just left it!

        This GWK:

So, in a bit of a rage, decided I wanted to do something drastic again.
I transferred Morata and Ramsey out (after 1 gwk of having them) and got Firmino and Coutinho in for -4. Who both blanked.
Meanwhile, "injured" Silva was getting his brace.
After hits I got 28 points...

After 9 consecutive green arrows, I'm now on 3 consecutive red arrows, from 41k to 223k in just 3 weeks.
Sorry for the long post...... *rant over*

Smooth: Transferred in Rooney and deGea for Elliot and Niasse for net gain of 13 points as Fabianski would have been my keeper. Richarlison, Maguire and Sterling. 41 points in total
Rough: Salah(c) Hazard Firmino and Kiko off bench for 0. 15 points from other 6 for total of 56.

        Rough

        Mee
        Kiko
        Richarlison
        Morata
        All in my team

Out the cup to a dead team with Mkhitaryan as vc

        Smooth

Christensen coming off before hudds scored

2ft to sort out the mess above

Super late on this, but needed the catharsis of writing it down.

Rough, rough, rough weekend: 29 points, captained Kane, Ward injured, 0 or 1 points from Femenia/Ward/Abraham/Choupo-Moting. After two weeks in the GW top 400k, was outside the GW top 5M (!!!), which meant I fell out of the overall top 1m.

Smooth: Christensen and Otamendi clean sheets.

Trying to not over-react and make snap changes for this weekend. Just hoping that Kane/Hazard/Salah/Morata, get back in the points.

Hazard just scored twice two weeks ago... Silva could easily blank the next two and he'd be in the same situation as Haz is now... The idea of the game is not to chop and change at every opportunity, the idea of the game is to be patient with good players!

You're right its not about chopping or changing. I'm talking about as a long term option.

Haz 6.3 pts per GW (since GW7 when he began starting matches)
Silva & Sterling scoring c. 6 pts per GW since start of season

The money saved by having Silva /Sterling could be invested in converting a cheapie to premium defender.

West ham have amazing fixtures gameweeks 18-27 and a double gw. Back to back clean sheets against arsenal and Chelsea and a good performance against city. Which west ham defenders are you looking at and why?
Also are any west ham attacking assets worth it? There seems to be a set template in midfield and is it worth breaking this template to fit in a west ham assets

          Nope.
          Top form striker Rooney.
          Top 20 form players - just 2 strikers - Rooney & Kane.

Problem atm not many players showing great form. Only 9 have form averaging over 6ppg.

Seen many people contemplating getting rid of Kane for his blank and the next few. Have we not learned from this week about the threat of rotation and injuries. Whilst it may pay off, are there really many other striker options (Most have Morata). Therefore it would require two trades to use Kanes funds and replace him. Then another two to get back in. When trades are precious, due to rotation/injuries and fixture congestion, seems like an unwise risk that could backfire badly. Plus Kane is one of the most nailed players in the game.

Those 4 trades will get you more points if you use them wisely, since there are plenty of options in midfield that are better value for money than Kane. No one's going to captain Kane for 3 of the next 4 weeks.

That's definitely one for me to answer tonight! My last month's transfers have been horrific - Sterling out before his hauls, Silva out before his hauls, Holgate out the week he got his place back and Dann out the week he came on as sub and scored. In came Moreno in time for his injury (benched him for the one clean sheet), Zeeg in time for his red card and Morata in time for his rocky patch. Also brought in Speroni for a hit this week because I didn't want (10 point) Foster away at Liverpool.

Captain choices have switched between Kane and Haz but always the wrong one.

Now you mention it, how do we carry on...

        1) Who is the real Harry Kane? The player we saw against Stoke or the player we saw against Brighton?

        2) Is de Gea essential?

        3) Is it time to take West Ham seriously? Especially with those fixtures.

        4) Should we scramble to stock up on Man City players once again?

        5) Is there simply no good FPL forwards this season? Should we play with a false 9 in our teams?

        6) Does David Silva prove that resolute patience is the key to success this season?

        7) What did Mark think of Granville's Wildcard?

        8) With kind fixtures to come, is Lukaku about to go on one of his goalscoring runs?

As FPLVirgin said before, when will we admit that DDG is essential this season? He really is a rank killer if you don't have him. He is 20 points clear of the next keeper. Those who have him probably banked every one of his 96 points. Lets face it, If you are rotating 2 cheap keepers, you would need incredible luck to get 65-70pts uptil now let alone 96.

Here is the case for DDG:
        1) He is the only really nailed on Utd defender. The next one seemingly nailed is Valencia and he is 1m more expensive.
        2) His fixtures are great for some time (not that it matters much as Utd can get a CS in any game)
        3) Surprisingly he is getting more save points than all keepers from small teams. Must be Utd restricting teams to shotsfrom distance.
        4) He is a baps magnet because of his saves and Utd's nack for 1-0 and 2-0 wins.
        5) Utd look on course to get 20 CSs or more this season on current defensive form.
        6) He has a huge ownership.

Some are looking at Burnley and thinking Pope will match him but he won't. Burnley's defensive form will break eventually as they get tired and as they edge closer to guaranteeing survival and take their foot off the gas. Also their fixtures are turning bad now. I am looking at getting him in this week or the next depending on the updates on the many injuries in my team.

          I have 77 puts from keepers...not bad.

DDG will cost most £1.2m (after selling Pope). Thats a lot of cash to come up with. With Eliott now dropped though DDG is more attractive as an option as no need to rotate.

SHould we consier Austin or Rooney as 2nd forward and spend the money in midfield? This way it is possible to have a midfield that has KDB,Haz,Salah and Sterling/Silva with a good 5th midfielder as well. Seems KDB is will keep outscoring Morata, City strikers, Lukaku, Laca

Context of the question is that I'm chasing and looking to gain ground. Sold Kane weeks ago and shipped Morata with the injury. Going heavy in midfield

Hazard seems to e the template premium midfielder of choice but does that mean he's the right choice. if you can get 2 out of 3, Kdb, hazard and sanchez from now to the dgw which 2 and why?

Assume Salah and one other city midfielder are already owned

        1. Have we gone back in time and is Rooney a legitimate option for a valuable striker spot?
        2. Whm defence is looking resolute (i never thought that i would say that). Which option is most appealing?
        3. Is it too risky to be without a United defender? With their ownership and huge CS potential is at least 1 essential?

Do you need a premium striker? Kane, Morata, Lukaku all blanking despite favourable fixtures are blanking more than hitting. Is having the likes of Rooney, Austin, Firminho, Vardy, Okazaki (!), enough?

I'm really confused now!! ...most of my team is set however i don't know which city midfielder to bring in?
Please discuss the differences as what is going through my mind:

Silva - up until 3 gameweeks ago i had him set as the assist only type of player and then he goes and scores 3 in a row
        🙁 !....Will this continue?

Sterling - he has best pts per minute ratio and looks the best of the options as he is most direct towards the goal...however has he really improved??

De Bruyne - he has best shot accuracy of them all looking at shots on target/shots stat , plus he is a god on a football pitch in terms of assists - but is he worth the 2 mill extra??

Sane - sane, sane sane - ive had him all season, and i am still hanging on , about to let him go on saturday based on the fact that he is playing wider and isnt as direct to the goal as sterling. - do i swap?

please please lets talk about this on podcast?

        i) With injuries hitting us hard this GW and other premium forwards/midfielders in rotation/out-of-form, is the ' Kane out plan' is a no go?

ii) Can we trust Kane with the TC as West Ham succesfully shut out both Chelsea and Arsenal?

Is it worth taking -8 or bigger hits to clear up injury plagued squads to ensure 11 players; or avoiding big hits and playing with 10 or 11 with no subs?

Leaving a team vulnerable to inevitable unexpected rotation.

They can work - I took an 8 point hit last game-week.
Sakho(-), Sane(-) and Callum Wilson(2) out, Otamendi(6), Shaqiri(3) and Rooney(8) in.
Got rid of 2 players that needed to go and brought in a couple that I really wanted, financing these transactions by downgrading a premium player who was out of form.
And I was still only able to field 10 players, thanks to Kolasinac being unexpectedly benched.

But I probably wouldn't have taken the hit if there had been a reasonable chance that I would still be able to field 11 players without one, or if I did not consider the players I was bringing in to be better prospects than the ones they were replacing.

Having quickly got Silva back after making the disastrous decision to sell for Coutinho, is a punchy fab five midfield viable from now on? I have double Liverpool, double City, and Gross who might well become Pogba when I wildcard. Sacrifices made upfront of course with two cheapies alongside Kane but I think it's a goer. I don't see the value in Chelsea big hitters when there are so many 8-9.0m options.

        Salah Coutinho Gross Sterling Silva
        Kane DCL/Diouf

most of us were seriously considering dropping kane for this run, morata has been poor lately and is injured/rested, laca continues to share minutes, as do the city boys, kaku just hasnt been the same for weeks now....

When do you justify a hit?

When your squad is plagued with rotations and injuries, it could seem like a good idea every week (especially to avoid price falls) but sometimes just having 10 or 11 players may work out better.

Also, what you want in the medium term could change week by week.

Do the chips ruin Cup competitions?
Or are Cup competitions mainly luck anyway, even without them?

(My FPL Cup opponent played his Triple Captain chip and beat me - but I would have lost anyway even if he hadn't.
The real reasons for my loss though were injuries, benchings and poor performances on the day affecting a number of my players).
