The first Gameweek of the festive spell begins early, under the lights of the Emirates Stadium as Arsenal host Liverpool in one of the most anticipated fixtures of the season.

Certainly, based on previous meetings, our expectations are high, with Fantasy managers hoping for a goal-fest and points aplenty.

There’s a host of attacking players on show, with Mohamed Salah the key asset and headline act.

Fantasy Premier League’s most popular player is now part of 57.9% of squads and, having returned in nine of his last ten outings, will surely be fancied to inflict further damage on the Gunners. He produced a goal and an assist on his way to 11 points in the reverse fixture at Anfield.

Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino are also star turns who sparkled who both Gameweek 18. The pair arrive in north London on the back of double-figure scores with a goal and assist apiece in the 4-0 stroll at Bournemouth.

Sadio Mane completes the “fab four” attacking line-up for the visitors. Having been omitted from two of the last four teamsheets, the Senegalese is without a return since Gameweek 14.

Arsenal’s notable Fantasy assets are few and far between.

Indeed, one of their key figures is again on the bench tonight as concerns grow on the prospects of Sead Kolasinac. The Bosnian was in 863,000+ squads as recently as Gameweek 16. However, having sat out the last three outings, his stock and ownership is plummeting. FPL midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles is given the nod once again at left-back and will be tasked with containing Salah’s threat.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Going back to the luck vs skill debate in FPL, I think luck is the main thing in the game because of the chance of injuries, suspensions, rotation, etc. You could get 4 injuries in one week whereas someone else has none and the other would benefit highly from that. Added to that, the other player has the luxury to make moves that the other person can't do, eg. for this week doing Morata out and upgrading RLC to Coutinho. Of course, you can increase your luck highly in the game by analysing statistics in the game and eyeing up the form and fixtures but in the end it never translates to skill. The transfers are the main part of the game that affects points, and if those unfortunate suspensions and injuries limit and affect the ability of a person being able to make the transfers they'd like to make, then there's a great chance that they will not do well as the person who can make the luxury transfers. Being unable to cope with these injuries and suspensions also may decrease the team value, whereas other firing options are increasing, and can seriously harm the budget of transfers and forcing you into going for a player like RLC when another person may have someone as expensive as Coutinho. As might be expected, skill is still a big factor in FPL, as if you know which are the players to bring in and which to captain, bench, etc., then you will likely accelerate up the ranks, and the managers who have had great ranks consistently over the years prove this. Chances are if you put a lot of effort into something, you'll get a lot out of it, but it's football after all. Anything can happen in football. You can analyse all the data you like, you can put all the time and effort into the game as you like, but in the end, you'll never be able to predict everything that happens in a given week in fantasy football. One major injury or suspension can change a season, one hat trick can change it too. The time, effort, skill and determination counts but the luck ultimately decides the fate of your success.

Ye but. Holding Morata for weeks when having a 'back injury' and is on 4 YC is asking for trouble. And that's not a skilled decision to keep him (easy to say in hindsight), but when he got flagged with a back injury, and was on 4 YC's one could argue that the 'skilled' managers got rid while others kept him, and now blames luck?

Not saying you're completely off, but you using Morata as an example is unwise in this debate, since he got flagged with a back injury and was on 4 yellows.

Let's go with Mane as an example then before he got the red card. Fantastic form, good fixtures were coming but he unpredictably got a red card in that game against City. That changed a lot of people's seasons imo.

I agree though, Morata probably wasn't the best example

The skilful player can still find a way of coping. Bad luck should also hit your opponents at some time. The trick is to handle it better.

      1. the snazzy viking
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 2 days ago

That's probably where skill comes in. If the luck is equal then the more skilled player should come on top. If the lesser skilled player has more luck than the more skilled one, then chances are they'll do better. A world class FPL player could probably handle the constancy of bad luck better than a casual, but you can only cope so much with that bad luck

Good managers have very similar teams. So if one week you will have 4 players out, probably they will suffer too. Teams template with few differentials, could be you don't care about your team and do nothing with.

Not really, you have 14 players to play with plus chips to help you should be able to manoeuvre throu injuries etc unless you’re really unfortunate to get 4 at the same time but that’s very unlikely. 75% skill 25%luck

You can't control luck, but you can develop skill. Skill itself cannot control luck, but if you adapt to the bad luck well then the bad luck has a lesser negative effect

probably the best conclusion from this is that your skill is determined by how well you react to good and bad luck; the best managers tend to react better to it than the worse ones, eg. taking -8's to get Kane out (although that bit is biased 😛 ) when he is a great option and is playing against Swansea and the hammers in the double gameweek in a few weeks time

we all have our good and bad weeks. have a decent week or two, then brought back down to earth! like to think we all have our fair share. luck does play a part. then its down to the individual on there transfers in, and out, captain picks etc, these are usually based on what moves you think are best. injuries suspensions etc are more down to luck
some people have a bad week, say they were unlucky, have a good week say they are a genuis, they say other people are lucky when they have good week,or say poor judgement when they have a bad week
we have to trust our decisions and hope we have a little luck along the way to help us, andgive credit where its due
      good luck all

            Haha, I know.
But if you've got a house valued at a million but the most someone will offer is half a million, then what is it's value.
It's only worth what someone will pay for it, which is partly why this country is up to it's neck in doo-doo.

I have 1 FT, 0.7 ITB and generally a strong team with likely 15 available players for next GW.

    Would you:
    A) Get in Lingard (BUR) for Gross (che) and bench Crouch (hud)
    B) Save the FT
    C) Prepare for the DGW by bringing in Adrián (bou) for Elliot

Would you also play Adrián over Pope next GW?

    Cheers

I still have others that are capable of 3 for 37...its only city assets that are a worry this week.if you have Aguero, Kdb, Sterling then fair play but then the rest of the team would be interesting to see.

As a morata owner it would be good if lane is booked tomo and suspended boxing day.

That would make morata best captain option as he would be nailed to start

I wouldn't mind that too much to be honest, as long as he does well against Burnley. Means to compliment Morata(c) I could get Lukaku for example for two weeks and then swap him back to Kane
