Burnley peg back Man City on a day of frustration for both the league leaders and an army of Fantasy managers.

The more philosophical will have shrugged off City’s 1-1 draw at Turf Moor as ‘just one of those days’, but those who had stocked up on City’s attack were left surveying the Fantasy wreckage of so much expensive talent bringing in meagre returns.

Three of Gameweek 26’s most popular purchases, Sergio Aguero (89,000+), Raheem Sterling (97,000+) and Kevin De Bruyne (92,000+), toiled for precious little reward against Sean Dyche’s men, with Sterling guilty of a particularly glaring miss.

That came when City were 1-0 up and in total control of a match in which they had 20 shots to their opponents’ eight, creating a chance every 4.7 minutes as they went.

Left-back Danilo, back in the side in place of Oleksandr Zinchenko, scored the goal when he curled home a Bernardo Silva pass; reward for a strong attacking performance from the defender, who had more attempts on goal than all but one player.

Sterling was the one man to better the Brazilian’s four shots, and the key attempt of his five on the day involved missing an open goal from three yards out.

That changed the mood in the stadium, inspiring a Burnley revival which culminated in Johan Berg Gudmundsson’s equaliser from a Matthew Lowton assist.

The Icelander has only scored twice in the league this season, but both have come in the last five Gameweeks as he continues to provide notable value, at 5.0, to the select band of 44,817 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers currently enjoying his services as their fifth midfielder.

Enjoyment was a considerably rarer commodity among owners of City’s stars.

Aguero blanked for the first time in four Gameweeks to deliver just two points for the 940,000 (16.5%) who captained him. That included 39 of the top 100 FPL managers, while 28% of the 17,900 who played their Triple Captain chip used it on the Argentine.

A fixture with Leicester City follows for Aguero which, crucially, comes at home as the forward has now gone four away matches without a goal.

De Bruyne has been equally underwhelming on the road, with just a single goal and assist from his last seven away days.

Sterling might have ended the match as the scapegoat, with Pep Guardiola bringing him off soon after his miss, but he has blanked only twice in nine Gameweek starts. The other was in the loss at Liverpool.

Of more concern should be City’s increasingly brittle backline, which has kept just one clean sheet in five.

John Stones remained sidelined – this time with a knee injury sustained in training – but that didn’t mean that Aymeric Laporte’s 93,000+ new owners reaped the reward as Guardiola partnered Vincent Kompany with Nicolas Otamendi at centre-half.

But whatever the combination, City’s defensive stock is on the slide as matches with Arsenal and Chelsea draw ever nearer.

In fact, trying to guess Guardiola’s teamsheet across all positions for the Leicester City match will be a tough task as the Gameweek 27 encounter comes just three days before their Champions League Round of 16 clash with Basel.

It remains to be seen how City approach that encounter, though having dropped points at Burnley, it could now be that Guardiola abandons any thoughts of rest and rotation.

As for Burnley, it was a predictably busy day for keeper Nick Pope (8.8%). Having produced just two save points from his previous five starts, he earned two more today, making six stops – more than any other goalkeeper in the Gameweek.

That was his best tally since Gameweek 17 and helped him to a bonus point made it 16 for the season now, ranking top among keepers.

The Clarets have kept only one clean sheet in eight matches, but an injury to Phil Bardsley, who was substituted at half-time, might well put Lowton back on our radars.

The defender’s assist caught the eye, as could his 4.3 price tag in the light of Burnley’s short-term schedule (swa SOT EVE whu) and a run-in that involves only matches with Chelsea and Arsenal of any major concern.

Have 2FTs for next gameweek. Lingard and Dep are the biggest concerns in this squad, right?

    Fab, Elliot
    Azpi, Mustafi, Ota, Duffy, Ogbonna
    Salah, Sterling, Son, Lingard, Miliv
    Kane, Firmino, Depoitre

    Repost, need someone to debate me on the following please;

    DDG / Pope
    Ota / Smalling / Azpi / Alonso / Masuaku
    CM / Ramsey / Salah / KDB / Lingard
    Firmino / Vardy / DCL

    Ota & Masuaku > Simpson & Naughton (2FT).
    Leaves 2.0M in the bank.

Week after KDB & Vardy > Son & Kane (-4)?

  7. Alonso rotation

Alonso: I saw some people asking about possible rotation so i wondered what will happen with the arrival of Emerson and what should Alonso owners do? Surely part of his 7m+ price means that he need to be be nailed on in the side and any possible rotation around big cup games would mean an expensive bench player.

    Here are Chelsea's upcoming fixtures

    Wat (a) 5/2 Mon
    WBA (h) 12/2 Mon
    Hull (h) 16/2 Fri - FA CUP
    Barca (h) 20/2 Tues - CL
    Man U (a) 25/2 Sun
    Man C (a) 4/3 Sun
    Palace (h) 10/3 Sat
    Barca (a) 14/3 Wed - CL
    Burnley (a) 17/3 Sat
    Spurs (h) 1/4 Sun

As we can see there is ample time for rest periods between most of the big fixtures. 5 nights between Barca and Man U, then another 7 days until Man C, a further 6 until Palace and 4 more until the 2nd leg in Barcelona. The time between 20/2 and 4/3 is clearly the most difficult period but seems to leave enough time for Alonso to easily play all of them with Emerson playing in the Cup against Hull and possibly against Palace in the league. Also Chelsea on Friday registered Olivier Giroud, Ross Barkley and Emerson Palmieri in the list of footballers available for the Champions League, ahead of the last-16 tie against Barcelona. So although he is available to play i think it's very unlikely he will play any part in either CL game (unless we maybe need a LW with injuries mounting).

Conte has also said "We have to wait. Especially for Palmieri, we are talking about a player who is coming back from a bad injury. He has played only one game, in the Italian Cup against Torino. He is fit but match fitness and tactical knowledge will take some time to bed in.

At the moment i would say it is safe to keep Alonso until sometime in March and even then it would take some seriously good performances whilst also attaining match fitness from Emerson to oust him. He has the capabilities to push Alonso for the spot but only if he can rediscover his talent after a big injury.

For anyone interested here is a scouting report with a statistical comparison between Emerson, Alonso, Sandro, Luis & Kola at their peak over the last couple of years

Only worry until april, fool, is if they tie against Hull. They will then have a replay midweek between mun and mci game. Palmieri will probably play that one too. If they get to the next round they play quarters 17/3, which means their league game that weekend is postponed until medio april.

    A) Ota, Lingard >> Wally, Mawson/ Fernandez (If I go Fernandez would leave me £1.0itb)

    B) Ogbonna, Lingard >> Fernandez, Shaq

    C) Ogbonna > Fernandez

    2FT £0itb
    DDG, Elliot
    Alonso, Otamendi, Ogbonna, Tomkins, Duffy
    Salah, Sterling, Hazard, Lingard, Mili
    Kane, Firmino, Ayew

Not if you have both Kane and Kun

One of those GWs where not taking a hit really helped.

That is the only thing i can salvage from this gw is that i banked a transfer like the saying goes a silver lining in every cloud.

This game will be very interesting next season. City assets likely to be priced highly and will be particularly risky to own as Pep is likely to have 2 players for each position. Under new management and no Champions League football Arsenal attacking players could be good . Challenging but more steategical times ahead.

Yes I think next season will be different in a few ways, as you say. But luckily/hopefully cheap enablers will always emerge.
Kun will be gone next year. Perhaps Kane as well?

Yup every year brings bargains though; Arsenal could still win Europa League to get in the CL places... I am more interested in which of Spurs Liverpool or Chelsea miss out - as their assets will likely shine without the midweek games and fixture congestion (I am assuming both Manchester clubs will qualify for CL).

You make some good points . Personally cannot see Arsenal winning Europa League . I will be looking at Wolves for bargains and Stanislas if fit.

It is nice to know that Phil Jones's sister does not resemble him.
