Fantasy Football Scout Cups – The Winners

The time has come to reveal the victors in our two Fantasy Premier League cup competitions after weeks of intense competition concluded with Gameweek 26’s dramatic finals.

In the Fantasy Football Scout Cup, TH14 joins donnellyc, Gribude, Ninja_Fit_Saints, Wild Rover, Mark, A Manager Has No Name, Sleepysi and myself in getting his name on the cup after a nail-bitingly close final against Elvarus.

Our new champion, who is 10,830 in the overall rankings, edged past  35th-placed Elvarus by just one point, winning 49-48.

Neither made a transfer going into this tie, but it was TH14’s backing of Manchester United’s Alexis Sanchez with the armband that proved pivotal, with the Chilean earning him 10 points after netting the rebound from his initial penalty miss against Huddersfield.

Elvarus opted to captain Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero, who delivered a mere four-point return. This costly move wiped out the advantage he’d gained from fielding David De Gea, who was the only defensive player among the pair’s squads to deliver clean sheet points.

Congratulations to TH14, who receives a £150 Amazon voucher, while Elvarus’ efforts earn him a £100 Amazon voucher.

In the Fantasy Football Scout Cup third place play-off,  Ezdmanx recorded a comfortable 46-34 win over former FPL champion Tom Fenley and is handed a £50 Amazon voucher for his efforts.

The underdog also prevailed in the Members Cup, with 40,936-placed rrcmc defeating the 7,552-ranked graslauk 58-41.

Rrcmc joins Waltzingmatildas, Fuzzy Dunlop, Kippax Kickers Acquafresca, Trigg Ola Svanheld and Malaikat Jahad in the roll call of Members Cup winners and receives a £150 Amazon voucher.

Although both made transfers, neither of their moves affected the final outcome, with rrcmc swapping Spurs’ Son Heung-min for Everton winger Theo Walcott, who both blanked.

Meanwhile, graslauk, who wins a £100 Amazon voucher as runner-up, moved Walcott’s team-mate Dominic Calvert-Lewin out for Swansea City’s Jordan Ayew.

Even though the Everton striker found the net, it was events at Anfield that proved crucial, with rrcmc’s captain Mohamed Salah scoring a brace and delivering him 30 points.

Graslauk’s armband selection, Harry Kane, could only produce an eight-point return after scoring one penalty for Spurs, but missing another.

A goal from Jamie Vardy against Swansea and six saves from Burnley stopper Nick Pope in the draw with Man City saw Rrcmc comfortably over the finish line.

Gloria Kanchelskis receives a £50 Amazon voucher after winning the Members Cup third place play-off against Root 38-35.

Congratulations to the winners.

A second free to enter Fantasy Football Scout Cup will take launch very soon, with the Qualifying Round set for Gameweek 29. Stay tuned for details.

Does anyone else keep a bit more on the bench than is technically necessary?

This season i've had J Ayew and Doucoure as first sub and I think now 4 times i've had 8-10 points come in off the bench.

With the amount of agonising on this week's Scoutcast re. rotation, rests etc and with this season at least appearing even more busy than usual, i'm surprised we haven't seen a little more discussion about what an extra £.5 - £1m invested in the bench buys you in relation to spending that money on a first team player.

    1. Yozzer
      • 6 Years

Then when a player gets injured and you have Tom Carrol coming off the bench you wish you had someone better. No rules but always good to have at least one decent backup

this is only my second season so I'm somewhat inexperienced, but I've placed an emphasis on a very weak bench, and a priority on players who are 100% nailed. I always consider whether a rest is imminent or rotation is due, and players' current form to avoid needing substitutes at any stage.

This strategy lets me have an extremely cheap bench, and i find i rarely get more than 2-3 points from my bench each week, but aside from this week, i think only once or twice have i needed an autosub. I will continue this strategy going forward till it bites me anyway

      1. Pacer.

It's a fine strategy and typically is the one used by experienced managers. Waiting until they need no repairs to their first 11 and then using a FT to bring in whoever is the best performing very low priced player.

I'd love to see some stats on autosubs and have a go at working out whether there is a trend in greater rotation in the bigger teams than in previous seasons. I keep my team pretty up-together but i think I have seen one or more autosub on at least 5 occasions now this season. While i understand the money is dead weight in any week that it is not utlilised, than does not necessarily mean that across the season is it a less efficient strategy.

        Food for thought

agreed, the cheap bench strategy this season was particularly difficult at the start of the year when i had to avoid manchester city assets until pep settled on his starting 11, i feel like maybe a stronger bench to start the year can let you take a few chances like playing sterling for his early hauls instead of avoiding until i was 100% certain he was nailed.

In the 11 years I been playing it always used to be get as much value into the first 11. Over the past few season's this has changed , maybe with so much rotation and games along with formation changes there is a knock on effect. With so many games coming thick and fast you should really look to have a decent first sub if you can afford it

Stats are misleading in general but I don't think you can use stats for this. Each case is unique. I had Andy Carrol most of last season who kept getting injured and in came capoue with double figures ( 3 times I kid you not)

this only tells you the number of points subbed and unfortunately it's necessary to know the number of times a player is substituted to consider the value of money on a bench

I think you should divide your seaosn in two parts regaridng bench.
In the beginning of the season, until the boxing day, you can afford having a weak bench.

But as the season continues, bench quality is becoming more and more important as rotation hits, so as injuries and blankcs and then it is worth investing a bit more in your bench, even if you drop some points in your wrong XI selection from time to time

actually apart from the first few games I suffered regular autosubs in the first half of the season due to stuff like Spurs and City rotation, Luiz falling out with Conte, Kiko and Dann injuries etc

Everton in the Premier League under Sam Allardyce when Rooney and Sigurdsson start:

    P6 W4 D1 L1

Wayne Rooney: 3 goals, 2 assists
Gylfi Sigurdsson: 1 goal (assisted by Rooney), 2 assists

    When they don't start...

    P6 W0 D3 L3

Having thrown the game with his team selection against Arsenal, leaving out his best performers, will he now play a consistent side to get the results needed? I hope so. If he can then surely the returning Seamus Coleman is one to watch. An outstanding performance on his return combined with great link up play with Walcott bodes well for fpl managers, especially with Everton's lack of blank gw's ahead.
Don't write them off just yet folks 🙂

What's the deal with Siggy? Was essential at one point last season with Swansea and looked a world-beater, but now is never even talked about - is it his position at Everton, or just bad form?

He has to play as a 10 imo to get the best out of him. Often he's played out wide for Everton this season. Pretty sure his FPL returns have always come as a 10.

Sam was damming of his players after the game with Arsenal but he did not give them much of a chance by not playing at least one of Rooney or Sigurdsson and then put in Mangala who has been a bench warmer all season.

BFS should have found a wall and started headbutting it instead of laying into his players.

Everton have some fantastic players on the books and they will surely start to click at some stage after all the turmoil and upheaval.

As a Toffees fan are you happy with Sam AT?

No I don't like the guy. He keeps changing the team win lose or draw. 40 odd changes he's made is one stat I read recently. I remember Newcastle fans berating him and saying the media's live for him was unjustified. I can see what they mean now. Hopefully he'll be gone in the summer

How many automatic substitutions have happened for people this year. I'm interested to think a little more about the value of money on the bench and need to know if my number is at all typical. I think i keep my team pretty together yet i have still had SIXTEEN automatic subs. You can check by clicking through your gameweeks and looking under the team where it list any autosubs made.

You input along with an approximate current rank would be very much appreciated

It doesn't, but I just counted 22. A few instances of benchwonkery aside, that's quite a lot.

that is a lot. It's approaching a 12th player and i think if it were to come out with subs averaging 20+ then I think there could be a case made for greater returns from spending £5-5.5m on a good bench player and spreading out the loss across the team which would be barely detectable.

Formation is key too. If you're playing 3 at the back there's less gains in buying a £5m midfielder

Interesting. You are operating on nearly 1 autosub per week. It's very possible that for a player in that situation the extra layout of .5 to £1m on players such as Grob and Doucoure would have paid off over the course of the season. Guess it depends if you can identify more value to be had in upgrading any first team players instead and i guess that is dynamic

A lot of young players around our back 4, Masuaku, Byram, Rice, Oxford, Cullen etc. Can’t beat bringing in someone with Evra’s experience even if it’s just to up training effort for the rest.
I personally think he will start a fair few whilst Masuaku is banned & maybe cement his spot enabling Creswell to push forward more.

Hasn't played or trained in ages. Was a terrific player, but he's past it, and will take a while to get match fit.

Not sure this was a good move by Moyes.

His experience can help them secure staying in the league
How long is he banned in Fra?

Not sure how long is left, but it was 7 months. Won't affect West Ham though, he's allowed to play.

West Ham is a good club for Evra by the time he runs over to where the fans are seated in the London Stadium he will be shattered and wont be able to lift a finger or a leg to the fans.

    DDG Elliot
    Alonso Otamendi Dunk Kenny Christensen*
    Salah Sterling Walcott Mahrez* Milivojevic
    Kun Firmino Wilson

    1 FT, 0.1 ITB
What would you do with this lot?Need to free up 1 million to enable Kun to Kane next week.

    A) Christensen to a 4.5 def
    B) Mahrez to Mkhi / Deulofeu
    C)anything else?

Crazy how disappointing Lukaku has been this season. Only 2 double figure hauls and his last being in GW5. And we all had such high hopes

He's been linking play okay, the main job of a central striker these days. It is a shame he's not scored more though 🙁

How can I free up £0.8m to bring in Walcott for Lingard?
Will 100% keep Son, his stats & fixtures look OK to me.

    Pickford - 3.9
    Alonso - Otamendi - Chilwell - Daniels - Duffy
    Salah - Son - Sterling - McCarthur - *Walcott*
    Kane - Wilson - Kun

p.s and don't downgrade Alonso or Otamendi that would be even a bigger mistake.

I'd downgrade Otamendi from that bunch, if not Son. Few tricky fixtures, leaky City defence anyway, lots of defenders available (Laporte, Stones, Kompany), and more importantly Champions League which Pep would certainly prioritise. A rest could be imminent.

    Pope, Elliot
    Alonso, Otamendi, Jones, Mustafi, Ogbonna
    Salah, Sterling, Son, Walcott, Carroll
    Kane, Firmino, Wilson

    1FT, 0.1 in bank

    Ogbonna --> Fernandez?
